DEFINING PERSONAL SPACE

SIZE

FIGHT OR FLIGHT

We looked into 3 main ideas, how big is your personal space? What happens when someone evades that space? and Is there a time when that is or has to be ok? We wanted to look into not only the emotional and social reactions but the actual physical reactions you can

WHAT IS OK

get from someone interfearing with your personal space. Looking into the fight or flight mechanism we saw that there are physical reactions to intimidation such as, raise in blood pressure, goosebumps and muscle tightening.

FURTHER EXPLORATION

Our first design idea was a representation of the idea of someone invading your personal space inflating and forming a spikey outer layer. However, this was too literal so we went back to thr drawing board to develope the umbrella story.

Your physical reality in a train

Your preferred personal space

The compromise of your reality and preferred

We started to look at a specific situation to explore how our personal space reacts. We came up with the idea of what happens when your personal space is restricted, physically, and how that effects how it responds. We developed these three stages. The first is the physical reality

of being stuck on a crowded tram or train, the second is what you would rather have your preferred space, the third is what we think happens when your preferred has to comprimise for your reality.

SURFACE DEVELOPEMENT

The comprimise pushing upwards and out of th top

People pushing against you, touching and squeezing past to try and fit in the confined space

Our reality vs our comprimise was the first step we took in creating a working surface. The reality a thin collum of the real amount of personal space you have on a busy tram. It twists and turn trying fit into any space it can. The comprimise shoots out of the top where it can find the space to breathe and release the awkward and annoying feelings of people touching and and squeezing past.

SURFACE DEVELOPEMENT

We chose to focus on the comprimise of personal space. We started to develope a surface for our second skin. The bottom section being the restriction and the top being the free movment of personal space.

SURFACE DEVELOPEMENT

The profile and section was too limited in its movment. We needed to have a moveable piece so that the inflate system could mold and eventually shape the form of the piece.

We experimented with the flexability of the triangualar pieces we had made to see where they could be moved. We descovered that the piece could be bent one direction and quite dramatically as well. We then enhanced this with an inflate device thats purpose was to expand the profile and section mesh.
