EXCAVATION PROCCESS

We were able to see the excavation proccess underway of an aged care facility in north carlton They were currently one level down and still had another level to go which creates the basment carpark and the foundations for the building You can see in the photos that large holes 12m deep are cut into the ground Concrete is then poured in stitu creating piles These piles are then connected together using a concrete beam on the top of each one

Excavation can then begin, the diggers remove the soil to a depth of 1.5m (seen in photos) To support the earth wall steel rods are used to reinforce and connect the piles together Shotcrete is then sprayed onto the bare earth to create a continous wall allong the side of the excavation site Digging can then continue

GOING UP

The construction on the adjacent building is well underway The roof concrete slab was poured the day before we got there and we were able to see what was going on in them The steel rods in the top picture are place through the concrete slab itself and then pulled in tension (12 tons) to stiffen the concrete This allows a much more shallow slab to be poured saving money and time The slabs are required by the enigneer to be propped up for atleast 20 days so that the slab has time to set

GOING UP

The plastering has begun on some of the floors The plastering materials change according to use The grey colour is regular plaster, the green is waster resistant, and red is used for fire protection plaster which are needed to adhere to certain building codes The bottom photo shows a completed ‘mock’ fasade of a room that will be placed in the building There is a large amount of technology being used to keep the residents safe and secure The glass box at the door is what they call a memory box used to keep photos of the residents and families so that they know which room is theirs
