As a Designate we are interested in the use of standardised elements for more architecturally interesting applications. Our project for the year focussed on the creation of a Materials Store for the KU Workshop at Knights Park and was implemented by a team of 4th year MArch. students, Master of Landscape students and lead by tutors Matt Phillips and Thomas Bates.

Through this process we worked from initial design concept and requirements to on-site build. As students we were able to further grow our understanding of working with clients and legislation (through interactions with the university) procurement (as we sourced materials and funding) and on site building techniques.

Design Development As a group we came together and focused to drive the project forward. Using the information gathered at our previous team meetings, and meeting with the KU Workshop, we had some set perimeters that we worked to which helped our work. Our main concept was to create a store that would fit within the confines of a parking space and would store the less precious but larger materials that the workshop stocks.

On-site Programming In order to keep track of incoming materials, worker availability and build progress we had a more detailed onsite plan. This guided us as we worked on site and took in material deliveries and helped us to keep to schedule.

Frame Construction Our frames were designed in separate panels to aid construction and our ability to move them. It was important that we did this section of the build efficiently in order to keep the rest of the project on track.

Metalwork As students we were able to get involved in the actual creation of the metal elements in the KU Workshop. This was a really interesting way in which we could follow a process from material procurement to creation and also made for an exciting moment when we able to hang the doors onto our store.
