THE BASICS ABOUT ME SAM DICKINSON JUN 94 ‘TIL NOW Currently studying at the University of Huddersfield. I would love to do my placement year for Graphic Design at Mexx. I am very intrested in your opening in the graphic design internship in the marketing team, in which I think I will be a good fit. I especially look forward to help generating content for social media. I am interested in this as through social media it allows a two way conversation to take place between the company and their clients. But a conversation is only as good as it’s content. I would like to be part of this to help improve that quality of conversation. Since getting my first job at 14 I have had numerous of part time jobs, to help get me through my education. This includes four bar jobs, three cleaning, two in restaurants and one in retail. Working long hours and under pressure, dealing with people, learning new skills, being organised and having a good working attitude. These are all assests i have gained while working, that will carry over into and ensure that i do well at my placement at Mexx. I currently play for my University’s American Football team in which through hard work over two years, I have manage to go from third string into a starting position with. I have learned a lot in the short time of playing this sport such as; commitment, being disciplined but mainly how to work in a large team.

This is my response to the D&AD Purdey’s brief. For the new packaging I wanted embrace more of the ‘Elixir Vitae’ element of the product. By emphasizing this the product has its new look with geometric shapes, that where inspired by trying to created a digital version of the philosophers stone - which is often paired with the Elixir Vitae. Rejuvenate Is heavily inspired by the idea of the stone, and Natural Energy being inspired from the sun.

My strengths lie with the Adobe package. I have a very good understanding of Photoshop (when I was in High school - my teacher would often ask me to teach the class how to do something). And recently teaching my self Illustrator, after effects and indesign. Which I feel comfortable using. But I like to teach myself new software where possible. With my latest two Uni projects I have tried to learn Cinema4D and some Coding using Processing. For first attempts of using complex software I feel that it shows that I am a fast learner, so anything that i currently don’t know - I will be able to take on.

For this project we were instructed to collect 30 similar objects, I selected to collect locusts. The project was to show the collection in an imaginative manner. This task lined up with some workshops on coding, so I took this opportunity to learn how to code. What you can’t get from the images, is that the locusts all jump around away from the mouse to reveal what is behind it. I found this project very interesting to do as it involved photography which I enjoy doing and learning a new skill. The mock ups are to show how I would display all my 30 locusts on different devices.

BREWERY Another reason why I would love to do my placement at mexx is the opportunity to be a part of professional photoshoots. I have experimented in photography, and would very much like to expand on the knowledge that I have, and to be able to see shoots from initial concepts to print.

rite photoshoot I have done, and one of my early ones. These pictures were taken during an day Urbexing in an arsh eroded building made a nice composition to the natural and minimilistic beauty of the model.

HUDDERSFIELD HAWKS These pictures are from a project I am currently under going. As part of the Huddersfield Hawks recruitment drive for next season, I am creating their poster range that will be used in print and on screens around campus. This is a current Work In Progress, and I am looking forward to see how the rest of the shoot turns out. These images are some behind the shots, of the shoot I did. This shoot was rather enjoyable to do, as I managed to set up a rather nice studio in my living room with equipment I could lend from the university.

OTHER PROJECTS Memory Glitch After discovering an old family photo album dating in the 1800’s, I found the idea of the memory of the people in the photographs has been distorted over the years, with stories being retold and retold again. This made me think that these memory of these people have become glitched. By digitizing the album, the photo’s may stay intact but the memory’s may still be glitched. So I deiced to make a second version of the album with the photographs glitched inside.

OTHER PROJECTS ICON BOOK As part of a assignment at university, this is a different imagination for an icon book (www. iconbooks. com/). The aim of the book is to introduce German playwright and practitioner Bertolt Brecht. These sample pages talk about breaking the fourth wall. This project is about illustrating in a visual manor Brecht’s practices with design elements through typography and illustrations.. This work was produced by they side of a 2000 word essay, talking and explaining the design elements.
