WHAT IS

TADELAKT?

Sam Najafi

What Is Tadelakt? Tadelakt is a type of plaster from the Marrakech region of Morocco. This plaster is both water and mould resistant, making it ideal for use in bathrooms. Once dry, the material has a smooth finish and satin sheen, giving an appearance similar to natural stone.

Colours Today, tadelakt can be tinted in just about any colour imaginable. The traditional Moroccan tadelakt colours are the warm browns and yellow ochres of the desert, striking vermilion, cool cobalt blues, and glowing saffron. Popular colour choices in the UK are muted stone-like tones, warming greys and beiges, and bold statement colours like blacks and greys.

Best Uses Tadelakt excels in solid, statement decor styles and can be used to finish kitchens, fireplaces, shelves, bathrooms, and steam rooms. This type of plaster is a stylish alternative to traditional tiled bathrooms and is applied seamlessly without grout lines.

Environmentally Friendly Tadelakt is sealed with a soap solution, so it can be cleaned with just water. Regularly recovering the plaster with the soap solution will keep it in excellent condition for years to come. If homeowners do decide to dispose of the material, it is biodegradable and can be crushed for use in new mortars.
