A A is the first letter and vowel in the ISO basic Latin alphabet. It is similar to the Ancient Greek letter alpha, from which it derives. The uppercase version consists of two more or less vertical lines, joined at the top, and crossed in their middle by a horizontal bar.
WORDS BEGINNING WITH
Abstract
Brief statement in outline or summary form, often prefacing a report or proposal and presenting a complete subject matter.
Acetate
Transparent or translucent plastic material. It is available either clear or in colours.
Air
Excess space in the line or photographic art or in text matter. Too much “air is indicative of poor planning and layout.
Anchoring
Securing metal printing plates on wooden blocks by using screws and pouring solder through holes drilled in the blocks.
Arrowhead
Indicator shaped like an arrowhead and used at the end of a lead line to direct attention to an object or a point of reference in conjunction with a callout, number, letter, or other symbol.
Avery
White adhesive paper with a backing sheet, used in applying typed, printed, or drawn nomenclature.

As an arrowhead is already partly the shape of a letter ‘A’ it makes the design easier to create the letter form. The form however needs to work around the stem of an arrow. This makes it a bit more tricky. I did a few initial sketches to see if it would work and I feel it does but needs a bit more work. I would like to be able to make the arrow out of wood or a similar material. Initially I thought about making it with flint as in the stone ages, but this was not a feasible.

I decided that i don’t think this idea would have worked as well as it would have been hard to keep the letter form of the A whilst also showing the arrowhead. also as the brief said it needed to be related to graphic design i was leaning for towards old fashioned arrowheads and not the ones that are used in design.

Our next idea was to use sheets of acetate to make the A. We thought about using it so that the A can only be seen in proper form from the front. Any other angle and you just see the sections of the A. Choosing a font, style and size of the letter is the main task and I need to sketch out lots of different examples.

The selection of font is important to our final piece. As it is going to be a very simple piece the font needs to be something that can look good alone. I think that a serif font would work better for this as it adds to the letter and creates a more visually pleasing shape.

After looking at different fonts we decided to go for a simple one that does not take away from the fact the acetate is the main thing. We used different weights of line to try and show the different sheets and create depth in the work.

ACETATE Acetate is a clear plastic sheet. Artists can use it with an OHP to enlarge images to 'trace' on to walls, canvass' or similar vertical surfaces. It can also be used in an inkjet printer so you can print from your computer.

PERFECT BOOK BINDING the process used to bind our book is called perfect book binding. We placed all the pages in a clamp and applied a coat of pva glue to the edge. after repeating this process 3-4 times it is left to dry. we then took the book out of the clamp and covered the card we are using for the cover with glue where the spine will be. the book is then left in a clamp over night. This whole process should leave a bound book.
we spent a day in poole taking photos of letters that we found in the landscape. These letters could either be existing or ones that we found from shapes around. Poole was great for this as it had a wide variety of old and new style fonts. Once we had gathered hundreds of pictures we went through and selected the best for each letter. THe layout of the book was important and we had make sure the size and positioning of the book was visually interesting throughout

L AYO U T S THE LAYOUTS FOR THE BOOK WERE VERY IMPORTANT. THERE NEEDED TO BE RANGE OF SIZES AND PLACEMENTS OF IMAGE SO THAT THE BOOK FLOWED WELL. WE DECIDED TO INCLUDE A FEW DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD FOR LARGE IMAGES THAT WE FELT LOOKED BETTER BIGGER. FOR SOME OF THE LETTERS WE HAD LOTS OF GOOD EXAMPLES THAT WE WANTED TO USE, SO THEREFORE USED THEM AS SMALLER THUMBNAILS

FOR THE LOVE OF GRAPHICS
17th February
arts university bournemouth as a class each first year graphic design student brought in items that loved about graphics. we exhibited in our studio and invited people to come round and look for one day only. THere was a very wide range of items and the whole thing was a big success.
LETTERPRESS For this workshop I learnt how to do letter m press. It is a computer based app that allows you to create images in a similar way to traditional letterpress, but on the computer. There is a range of different fonts, colours and paper to use. The effect it gives is very similar to the traditional method however it gives you the freedom to play around with the layouts much quicker and it speeds the whole process up

RISOGRAPH PRINTING Risograph is a high-speed digital printing and designed mainly for high-volume photocopying and printing. Designs can be made on the computer or scanned in. Each colour layer has to be printed separately so each image requires time to dry and then the next colour is printed.

Japanese book binding is an ancient process of making a book. TO do it you need to get the pieces of paper and a cover you want. you then drill 5 holes in a line and thread string through to bind the book. The process is the western version of the traditional method.

ABOUT this lecture explored the relationship of the way people react to different tastes and design of items. we talked about peoples different judgments of things and what we consider to be good taste and bad taste. everything that is made has a function and form, however there are a lot of things made for consumer pleasure. everyone has different taste and it varies in different countries and cultures. i found this lecture interesting and i engaged with what was being said.

ABOUT THIS LECTURE HELPED ME WITH MY ESSAY. IT HELPED MY UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT PROPAGANDA WAS AND ITS PURPOSE. THE LECTURE FOCUSED ON THE HISTORY OF PROPAGANDA, THE MEANING AND THE PURPOSE. I LIKED THIS LECTURE AS IT GAVE ME A CHANCE TO MAKE NOTES AND GIVE ME A CLEARER UNDERSTANDING OF PROPAGANDA THAT I COULD USE FOR MY ESSAY

ABOUT THIS LECTURE EXPLORED THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RIPPING SOMEONES WORK OFF AND CHANGING IT FOR A DIFFERENCE USE AND MAKING IT YOUR OWN. THERE IS A FINE LINE BETWEEN COPYING SOMEONES WORK AND MAKING IT YOUR OWN. IN THIS LECTURE WE EXPLORED COPYRIGHT AND LOOKED AT DIFFERENT EXAMPLES OF HOW WORK CAN BE CHANGED TO BE THEIR OWN AND NOT JUST COPY IT.
