NDOLA GOLF CLUB CLOCKS HUNDRED YEARS
NDOLA GOLF CLUB AT 100 2

Celebrating 100 years in any situation is an interesting time for anybody. Usually all those that should be there at 100-year mark will have long gone to rest. Ndola Golf Club for example has no known member who is that old to give us a low down of events as they unfolded in the past. We have entirely relied on documentation that has been past from the archives of write ups of events such as tournaments, and historical mile stones such as jubilee etc. These have been reservoirs of knowledge and a chronological account of how Ndola Golf Club started in the humble beginnings as a NINE hole course just across the Nkana road from the current club house, with putting grounds made of slag.

Most of the information provided here is as a result of the many accounts given at different times by various authors who lived to witness the events as we are in this celebrations. This has been passed on to

the next generation in this way. As we document the 100 years of the founding of Ndola Golf Club we also lay and provide new information that may not be there in the past account but we build on the existing information.

The production of this Golf Magazine would not have been possible without the support of the corporate community individually and severally who put up adverts as a way raising the required amount of money to meet the costs of printing and production. To all of these many wonderful supporters we say a big thank you for giving us the support

We hope you will find information provided both educative history wise and interesting

THE CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS ORGANISING COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

Ndola Golf Club has reached yet another mile stone in its history as a club. I am happy to be part of these 100 years of its existence celebrations. More so, to hold the chair for the organisation of the events to mark its 100 years from 1921 to 2021. The last time we had similar celebrations was when the club achieved the 75 years of its history. These events and celebrations would not have been possible without the great and generous support from the corporate community who made donations and pledges of various kinds. A number of them gave support by way of adverts in this magazine and thereby making it possible to cover the printing costs. Others donated materials for events, an example in mind are the 100 tree seedlings planted on the course to mark the 100 years donated by VOYAGERS. These are land mark donations that will remind members of the years in future. Notable also is REKAYS Ltd for their generosity.

This task would not have been achieved without the support and cooperation of the fellow organising committee members who were equal to the allocated tasks to run the events. They included the task of Golf Tournaments events, Fundraising, Communication, Treasury issues. Committee outfits and Catering. In the course of these preparations’

we sadly lost our Vice Chairman for the Organising Committee Mr. Alex Mashano (MHSRIP) who will be greatly missed as he did not survive the centenary year.

Former members of the club now in the diaspora were excited to be part of these celebrations and contributed in many ways both materially and financially to our treasury and to our knowledge of the past of the club history knowledge. We compiled information about the club because of the support from such individuals.

Finally, but not least and on behalf of my colleagues wish express our gratitude to the city fathers, the Ndola City Council for the support rendered in the past. Our 100 years Golf Club would not be what it is today without their generosity by donating land where the front nine hole and fairways are now located more than 60 years ago today, including the present club house premises on which our City of Ndola was founded in 1904 as an administrative post by Stevenson.

NDOLA GOLF CLUB CAPATIN’S CENTENARY MESSAGE

It is with great pleasure that I write these notes on behalf of the general membership to commemorate the 100 years of the existence of Ndola Golf Club. This is a land mark achievement that deserves the creation of memories for future generations. I am fortunate to be holding the office of the Club Captain during the commemoration year hence this opportunity to share my thoughts with audience at large.

Firstly, as a club, we are indebted to CLUB TRUSTEE Mr. Ron BOUVERIE and his committee who have worked tirelessly to make things happen and on behalf of the membership I wish to express our gratitude to the great thoughts, initiatives for arranging a series of activities for all of us to participate with a deep sense of belonging together as a family.

The centenary year has not been without difficulties. The COVI-19 did a lot of damage to the flow of our golf activities. At one point we almost had to close the club and suspended most of our golfing activities. In this way the Zambia Golf Union calendar of events was affected. It has therefore not been an easy year to have social events as social gatherings were discouraged.

Ndola Golf Club has evolved both socially and physically since its creation on 10th May 1921 when Ndola was just a small but growing settlement on the Copperbelt. Physically therefore it has grown from a 9-Hole course from across the road to an 18-Hole fully fledged golf course that has in the recent past hosted international tournaments starting more than 60 years ago in 1954 when the first professional golf tournament was staged. This was the beginning of the Cock ‘O’ North tournament that was played as a professional tour.

Socially the club membership has also evolved from being a racially divided group to a mixture of races starting in 1962 when the first non-white member was admitted into club membership. Since then the club membership is multi-racial and all races are free to join as members’ subject to the club disciplinary rules.

club in a big way in that in the 1950 the City under its Council swapped a piece of land where the current first Nine holes are located for the land across the Nkana road which was converted for

Let me start from the onset by congratulating the Executive of Ndola Gola Club through their Centenary Celebrations Organizing Committee on attaining a 100 years of golfing at Ndola Golf Club. As the club celebrates this mile stone in our City I would to highlight a few issues that the City has had with Golf Club.

Firstly, this spot that is now the Club house is where the City of Ndola was established initially as an administrative centre by one call John Edward Stevenson on 18th July 1904. The British South African Company (BSACo) was at that time given the mandate to rule by charter this part of Zambia as their search for minerals intensified around the Copperbelt area as we know it today. We were reminded of this history not long ago when in July 2004 the City of Ndola celebrated its 100 years of existence.

Secondly, the City shares the growth with the

golf club in a big way in that in the 1950 the City under its Council swapped a piece of land where the current first Nine holes are located for the land across the Nkana road which was converted for fuel storage facilities. In this way the current golf course took its shape into an 18-hole course.

Thirdly, as a result of this new look course, (maybe the first one in country at that time) the council donated a trophy for the first professional golf tournament in 1954 as its contribution to the club and the event. The first Cock’O’North tournament was therefore the first professional golf tournament in this country. It survived several editions as a forerunner to the Zambia Open Golf tournament.

Lastly but not least such celebrations remind us of the historical ties that the Council has had with the club over time and would like to further remind ourselves that this is our City and we should share these opportunities as a community in future

NDOLA GOLF COURSE HISTORY AND CLUB DEVELOPMENT

The Course development

Accounts of the history of the Ndola Golf Course and the Club go hand in hand. Accounts of when the club was initiated and the space where golf was first played is one and the same. The initial Nine Hole Course was started and established on the eastern side of the current 18th fairway on the Nkana road with putting grounds that were not even greens but slag. The club house was a modest thatched house which served the intended purpose in those days. Nowadays it would be condemned as a fire hazard!! It was later replaced with a corrugated roof.

Over the years the course was extended by creating a second nine holes across the Nkana Road. These now stand as the back nine for the course (1018). In the late 1950s the club gave up the original Nine-hole course in exchange for a bigger area

measuring 110 acres in extent with the Council. This achievement would not have been possible without help and support from people like George Jerrad whose father was President of the Ndola Golf Club in 1932 and later was made life member because of his efforts to secure new ground. In this way the City grew side by side with Ndola Golf Club over the years.

This now serves as the Front-Nine. The Council was in search of land for industrial development. With this development the club was slowly doing away with the slag putting grounds that were in use from the beginning. This was re-in forced with the need for a water reticulation system to manage the watering of fairways and the greens. In 1962 a water reticulation sub-committee was formed to come up with a feasibility and the economics of water irrigation and maintain it during the dry season. The plan for the scheme was to use the last stage effluent

NDOLA GOLF CLUB AT 100 10
Map of the Course in 1954

from the municipal sewage work. The scheme took effect in April 1963 and is still in operation to date but with modification as now the irrigation uses pop-up sprinkler system for fairways, greens and T-boxes.

The course has continued to make modest changes to the layout. The first being the conversion of the holes 16 from hole 11, 17 from 12 and 15 from 13. This was for the convenience of the final nail-biting

lap of the game as one watches from the club house as holes and fairways have their proximity to the spectators. The other fairway that has received some alterations is the first fairway that had to be rerouted to give way to the physical development of a new hotel on the fairway. Thus hole number one fairway changed from the former site to a new one and was reduced from a par-5 to a Par-4 and thus altering the course rating and the stroke indexes for the course. The other changes that affect the course

is the construction of a perimeter wall fence from the 18th Tee box up to 8th Tee box in order to provide security and minimize the casual criss-crossing of the course by the public and some people with ill intentions such petty thieves.

1904 on 18th July. The building has had minimal changes made to it over the years, the major one being the terraces that has had a face lift for the comfort of the spectators by having a roof extension that to Rekays Building supplies who are an all seasons supporter to the club

THE CENTENARY GOLF PROS KELVIN CHIBUYE

Kelvin is a left handed golfer who has excelled with his golf game. He is 24 years old having been born on 30th September 1996. He was recruited to play golf by the club captain at that time Greg Lubesha, who like other golfers noticed the interest in the game at hole number 6 T-Box. He and his friends were regular spectators for golfers passing that route.

Upon that recruitment, his game was quick to mature that he was recruited as national team player He played for the junior team and represented Zambia in Zimbabwe, and Malawi before being elevated to the Senior team.

As a senior player Kelvin played for Zambia in South Africa (2014) Uganda (2016) Namibia (2019) and Zimbabwe (2018). He gained so much experience and skills that Kelvin turned Professional in 2020. The amateur ranks became too small for him. He now looking for challenges in the professional ranks. He was crowned Club Champion in 2018.

GABRIEL CHIBALE

Like Kelvin, Gabriel was a fellow spectator at the T-Box number 6 of the course. Born 23 years ago on 3rd May 1996. He has attended both primary and secondary school in Ndola. He rose through the golfing ranks quickly after being recruited by the Captain that time Mr Greg Lubesha to join the club as a junior. He played in the junior ranks and represented Zambia in Mauritius and Namibia (2013) Zimbabwe (2012). He became Club Champion for three consecutive years,2015, 2016 and 2017.

Upon leaving the Junior ranks Gabriel played for the National team as a senior and represented Zambia in Namibia, Mauritius, Uganda, Swaziland, Zimbabwe. The amateur ranks could not hold him for long and he turned Professional December 2020 and is looking for serious challenges like the sunshine tour circuit. Presently Gabriel and Kelvin assist the Club in mentoring other Juniors and any person who wishes for services of a Golf Pro.

NDOLA GOLF CLUB AT 100 13

SHRAVAN DESAI

Shravan’s journey to the Professional ranks started with a neighbour’s invitation to the then 10-year-old boy to accompany him to Ndola Golf Club and in that way the sport took root. With support of the family and hard work Shravan made to the first Indian Professional Tour and made his first Pro cut at the Gujarat Open on his home course. Although Sharvan plays on the Indian Golf circuit as a Pro his golf upbringing is credited to Ndola Golf Club within the Centenary time. We wish Shravan the best in his golfing profession. He was Club Champion in 2019.

DAYNE MOORE

Dayne is also a home grown Professional. He started golf as a junior at Ndola Golf Club. He was nurtured here until the amateur ranks could not hold him any longer. He turned professional and has since established his base in South Africa where he features regularly on the Sunshine Tour Tournaments. Dayne is the first Professional for the Club to establish himself as a Professional. He now plays his golf in South Africa and certain tournaments in Belgium.

There were other Professional players before him like Rabson Kopalande, John Nkandu and the late Geoff Chishiba who featured as pros in Zambia. Dayne has broken those ranks and is now our home grown centenary pro.

EVENTS

Golf Tournaments

Celebrations of any kind may a day’s event or it could be a series of events marked by activities that are a reminder of what the celebrations are about. The centenary celebrations are not only about the establishment of Ndola Golf Club on 10th May 1921 but mainly about the sport of Golf which at that time was a rare and unique

sport in the country at that time in history. So the celebrations started off with a Golf Tournament on Sunday 9th May 2021 that was supported by STANBIC Bank and the Corporate world, an invitation was given to all the Golf Clubs on the Copperbelt to participate. So Luanshya, Nkana, Chibuluma, Mufulira, Nchanga and Nkonkola were invited to participate.

Due to COVID-19 health risks the program of events slowed down quite considerably some had to be extended to the following year (this year 2022) and also timed to coincide with the centenary month which is May. This included the unveiling of the plaque to mark the 100 years. This also was intended to capture the events as they occurred for the whole year of celebrations.

To close the centenary year celebrations another tournament was held on 7th May 2022.”

To close the centenary year celebrations another tournament was held on 7th May 2022. This was heavily supported by the corporate world who sponsored teams that participated in the tournament. Both tournaments were successful and helped to raise money not to pay for tournament prizes but have a bit of money to pay for some expenses.

TREE PLANTING

An organised tree planting exercise that was also undertaken as a centenary event was conducted in November 2021. The event was supported by the VOYAGERS Company. They donated 100 assorted tree seedlings for planting on the course. Their package included T-Shirts for children who helped in the planting and snacks afterwards. This was a special tree planting exercise to mark the centenary anniversary otherwise trees are planted regularly when a donor comes on board to offer tree seedlings to the club.

The Course is old and as a result we lose a number of trees each year. The vegetation on the course is mainly a miombo assemblage of trees composed of the Brachystegia, Julbernardia, Parinari, Tricia, Figs and some Acacia species. The rest of the tree species are ornamental and they comprise of Flamboyant, Flame trees, Gmelina, and Jacaranda that have been planted to sustain and maintain the frontage of fairways. The trees planted were a mixture of both indigenous and exotic trees. The trees are planted as a way of keeping the tree frontage and also as mitigation for climate change.

The maintenance of the course was at a certain time embarked on the removal of that noxious weed called Lantana camara from the course vegetation. The weed is an invasive plant that found its way in Zambia in the 1950’s as a hedge ornamental plant and escaped to the wild mainly through bird species that eat the fruit. And

drop them elsewhere. The weed has been somewhat reduced but it the fight needs to be sustained periodically.

Other donors to the tree planting were the self-styled Nyela club members. The group is composed of Steven Mateyo, Phil Munsaka, Mulenga Mpuku, Maybin Noole, Matipa Sichintamba, Choongo

Poto, Emannuel Chenda, and Charles Mwanza. These golfers have made themselves an 8 ball (not the usual 16 ball) going by the name I do not wish to repeat because of its literal meaning in many local languages. The group donated a number of Mukula species tree seedlings which they planted around the course.

Memories such as centenary commemorations are not complete without visible mile stones for posterity so that they can be remembered by those who come after and become part of the historical symbols of achievement. The Club did make such provisions and

a Plaque was made to commemorate the 100 years of the club being established. The commemoration plaque was unveiled by the City Mayor on Friday, 6th May 2022 in the afternoon in front of the Club house.

GOLF LEGENDS

Godfrey Mbawala

Born on 25th June 1946, Godfrey Mbawala is a living legend of GOLF. He joined the Club in 1976 and was put on observation for three months. He was confirmed as a member in October of the same year. Before joining the Ndola Golf Club, Godfrey played ‘un-conventional golf ‘just across the street from the club with his peers. There were no strict rules, no handicaps and not organised. He was 22 years old that time. Through this he developed his golf skills.

Once a member Godfrey bought his first clubs at K180 from a Mr. L. Banda. His talent was immediately spotted such that by 1984 together with

the late Geoffrey Chishiba had improved their game skills. This was mainly due to the late Brian Moyo who was instrumental in organising a number of social games especially on Mondays mainly medal games

In 1985 Godfrey became a national team player up to 1997 when he was made Captain of the national team. During this period Godfrey represented Zambia in Zone 6 tournaments that saw him play in Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, Kenya and South Africa including tournaments held in Zambia. In 1991 Godfrey represented Zambia at a tournament held in the United Kingdom. He returned to the national team in 2005 when he led the Zambian team as captain at the Sun City tournament

Godfrey has bagged three Club Championships at Ndola during his days. These were 1987, 1994 and strangely at 57 years of age in 2003. This has not been a mean achievement for a golfer. Just like his contemporaries, the late Lapson Mbayole and Geoffrey Chishiba who played their best golf at Ndola Golf Club in their time.

Godfrey now is an old man. He has moved from being a scratch player to 24 handicap just like a beginner where he started his golf. Such is life what goes up comes round. He spends most of his valuable golf time not playing but starting the field of play as a chief starter. The club has conferred on him life membership. He is a true Golf legend.

N G Patel, The Golfing Octogenarian

Naranji Govindji Patel otherwise fondly known as “N G Patel” by the golfing fraternity at Ndola Golf Club. NG is a doyen of all golfers as a result of his immense contribution to the club activities and growth over the years. At the age of 86 years NG is still golfing and surprising every one. He is the oldest golfer at the club and still playing a ‘decent ‘handicap of 28.

Born on 4th June 1936 in India and like most members of the Asian community NG found himself in the Ndola business community a long time ago. He however just joined the Ndola Golf Club as a member some unknown day in March 1986 after a stint of playing cricket at the neighbouring Cricket Club. His first task at the Ndola Golf Club was to create a fund from the parking car parking levy. This he did without any club resources into the initiative. In this way some parking slots with a canopy attracted an annual fee. He also worked on the frontage wall around the club entrance that was

available for wall space adverts to companies. From his efforts he was able to raise an Average of K10,000 per annum for the club. The club has continued to raise money from his efforts. He has continued to work with different Club Captains over the years as the club benefits from his efforts.

Apart from parking space creation and management NG was instrumental in creating the “two pump “arrangement for the irrigation of the fairways on the course, T-Boxes and greens. In addition to this he has been a sponsor for the regular Caddies competition on an annual basis.

NG is now a Trustee and a Life Member at the Ndola Golf Club. Titles that he will hold for the rest of his life. He is a true legend

Lapson Mbayole

Lapson Mbayole, born on 30th July 1939 is another golfing legend of our century. He stands out as an exceptional player who rose from the Caddy ranks to become the most prolific golfers in our centenary year. From the caddy ranks he entered the golfing fraternity and did not only represented the club, but the country at Zone 6 tournaments, but was the undisputed club Champion for 10 years, having won it in 1969 and only missing it in 1982 and 1984. There is no such record in the club history that’s why Lapson Mbayole stands out to be a

golfing legend of the century.

When not playing golf Mbayole worked on the course maintenance as an employee of the club a job that he did until he met his death on 4th November 2016 after a short illness. He is fondly remembered not only for his golfing skill but also for the role he played in re-designing the course layout for the hole number one so that the URBAN hotel could be put and built on its current position. To his honour Hole number one was named the Mbayole Fairway in his memory.

Alister McLean - The man who started it all COCK ‘O’ NORTH

Accounts of the origins of the COCK’O’NORTH Golf Tournament were best narrated by Chris Andrews in the Cock’O’North brochure of March 2001 and the man himself, Allister McLean. All the credit goes to one outstanding administrator of the century in the name of Allister McLean as the brain behind the tournament.

It was his golfing administrative skills, when as Captain in the years 1954 to 1958 that he gave the thought of staging a professional Golf Tournament that would also include armatures. At the annual General meeting in 1953 the Northern Rhodesia Golf Union offered the Ndola Golf Club the date to host the Tournament. It was the first of its kind in the country and was to take place in June 1954. Participants were to be drawn from the Union and the, the Federation.

Allister McLean, the architect of the tournament coined the name Cock’O’North and in his own

words “to imply that the best golfer in Northern Rhodesia would be the Cock of the golfing walk.” The first tournament in 1954 invited golfers from South Africa and Southern Rhodesia. The winner was Harry Middleton from Salisbury that time now Harare.

In the years that followed many renowned professional golfers made their entry into the tournament, and with improvements of the course from the 1960s when the course was 100% green on the putting greens. Some notable players include Ian Woosnam.

Sewsunker Sewgolum

Among the professional golfers invited in 1964 from the subregion was a South African golfer of Indian origin. Sewgsunker “Papwa” Sewgolum became a professional golfer by chance. Being non-white in apartheid South Africa he could not play golf on whites only golf courses then. He could only go to the golf course to be a caddy. However, as a child he had been gifted a Syringa stick by his father who was a municipal grass cutter in Durban. With this stick he imitated golfers in the nearby course ever since this time. And then he became a caddie, the closest he could get to proper facilities. As caddie he won many non-white tournaments that were contested between caddies.

It while he was a caddie that an opportunity arose in the company of white golfers and one in particular called Andrews together with his companions. At the fifth hole Andrews played a poor shot and he turned to his Indian caddie for advice on what club he should use for his approach shot to the green. The Indian man sniffed the breeze and looked at the 145-meter distance marker and selected a 6-iron. Andrews took the shot but he was short of the green. And with frustration he yelled at the caddie, “you call yourself a first class caddie?” the Indian lowered his head and started walking towards the club house.

Andrews yelled again, “Hey man where do you think you are going?”

“To the club house sir, to get you a first class caddie.”

Andrews was shocked but restrained his frustrations. “What’s your name?”

“Papwa.”

“What made you so sure that a six iron was the club for the shot?”

“I play a bit sir”

Andrews picked up the a six-iron and thrust it challengingly in his direction. Papwa took the six-iron

and made a practice swing, while Andrews and his colleagues burst out laughing because of his grip (the “Baboon Grip”) where the left hand is below the right hand in a right handed stance.

The Indian swung the six-iron back with a well-coordinated motion, sending the ball to its zenith and dropping some four meters beyond the flag and back within a foot of the hole. The white men gaped with amusement and shook the Indians hand.

In May 1959, Wulff, who was his employer since the six-iron incident as he had witnessed the incident, and had allowed Papaw to practice his golf. He took him to the United Kingdom to play in the British Open. He failed to make the cut for the final two rounds, He then took him to the Dutch Open which he won that year and the following year.

Finally, with pressure on the segregation laws, Papwa was allowed to play in the Natal Open in his home country, but was not allowed in the Whites Only interior areas like the Bar and the Change rooms.

In 1965, he played and won the Dutch open for the third time and the National Party in South Africa won the elections. Papwa Sewgolum was banned from the Natal Open, his passport revoked and denied the right to play golf. Such were harsh realities of Apartheid.

Sewsunker” Papaw” Sewgolum was born on 12th December 1928 and died a pauper in 1978 aged 49. He was the winner of the Cock’O’ North in 1964 at Ndola Golf Club. His legacy lives on through a golf course named after him in Durban.

BEMBAS VS NGONIS

This is one competition that has survived 35 years of traditional “fighting”. The game format is stable ford and is played on the first of January each year. It is open to any golfer from anywhere. The competition is however between the Bemba people of Northern Province and the Ngoni speaking people of Eastern Province. It started from a small group of people who must have issued ‘threats’ to another group obviously in a bar in 1986. Thus it was decided that instead of trading punches in the bar they would settle their scores on the golf course. The Bembas versus Ngonis game was born. At the onset the Ngonis decided that the dress code of golf should be put aside and that the warriors should dress in their battle dress. However, this did not go well for one Ngoni warrior on one of the tournaments. When he reached hole number 6, Tee box, some stray dogs did not identify him as a golfer. So they attacked him savagely and had to be rescued from further punishment by some brave Bemba warriors.

In order to understand this ‘rivalry,’ created by historical events, one must understand the background to each ethnic grouping. The Nguni’s are descendants of a residue of the once Zulu empire in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal area composed of the Nguni and Zulus. Their dispersal followed the Zulu wars and dominance between 1815-1840. They were led by Zwangendaba, the head of the Jere clan who led a small group of follower’s north through Mozambique and Zimbabwe to Vipya plateau in the present day Chipata district Malawi and Tanzania border confluence. They crossed the Zambezi river on 20th November 1835. This date is known because of the eclipse of the sun Zwangendaba established a state using the Zulu warfare techniques to conquer and integrated local inhabitants.

Upon his death in 1845 succession disputes arose and the Ngoni were split into three kingdoms, one in present Zambia, the others in Malawi and Tanzania. Mpezeni was the warrior king of the Ngoni group in Zambia. He remained the only centre of resistance to aspirations of many concession seekers that included the Portuguese, and the British through the British South Africa Company (BSACo) who sent agents to obtain a treaty through Alfred Sharpe in 1889 and Joseph Maloney in 1895. Both were not successful. Despite this failure, in June 1896 the BSACo sent an expedition of 15 Europeans led by R G Wharton to investigate mining and agricultural possibilities within the area. Wharton assumed unwarranted powers of administration which was a source of friction not only with the British authorities but also with Mpezeni, By December 1897 Mpezeni and his warriors rose against the British who had control of Nyasaland(Malawi). The British summoned troops with artillery to disperse Ngonis

who had surrounded the four prospectors who had established themselves in Luangeni about 80 Kilometers west of Fort Jameson.

It was this inherent Zulu warfare behaviour and techniques to conquer and integrate the local people that they conquered that did not go well with the Bembas. They put up a defence against the Ngonis such that they could not allow them the chance of a conquest.

The Bembas entered modern Zambia much earlier

than the Ngonis by crossing Luapula River by 1328 from the Kola group in Congo (Democratic Republic of Congo) and settling in present Northern Province and parts of Muchinga province. They were not the fighting type, however because they were a united group who could fight back if attacked.

In this way the traditional rivalry has continued to flourish, the tournament has a trophy kindly donated by the late David Phiri to promote the friendship tournament.

HANDICAPS

The game of golf is played on HANDICAP basis; each beginner is allocated a playing handicap depending on the scores they get in the first three or so games. From there their handicap changes as they better their game and are able shoot lower scores from 18-holes. In recent times these rules have been modified with the adoption of the Handicapping system that has come into use. Zambia has adopted the Handicaps Network Africa (HNA). This Handicapping system is such that each course in Zambia and potentially each Tee box gives you a different course handicap.

A golfer is encouraged to check their handicap before starting a game in relation to the tee they are going to use. These are marked Yellow, White, Blue and Red for ladies and thereby also open a round of golf and close it afterwards.

This development has now taken a global level with the introduction of World Handicap System (WHS) in 2020 which has since been adopted by 108 countries that are using the system Zambia is not yet there may be soon.

The Ladies Champion who reigned supreme

TARA DROSKY ALLIN, has been playing golf since she was 10 years old at Ndola Golf Club. She was introduced to the game by her late father Willem Drosky, who was her mentor and coach in the formative years starting in 1983. Mr Drosky was fondly called “Ginger”, perhaps on account of the colour of his hair.

Tara became the first teenage girl to win the “Chick ‘O’ North” tournament in 1989 and defended the title again in 1990. The Chick ‘O’ North is a tournament played at Ndola Golf Club to promote Junior golf. The tournament

attracts juniors from around the country to all Zambia Golf Union Affiliates. Soon after this success she was drafted into the Ladies Golf National Team in 1989. This new challenge saw her play continental golf in Zimbabwe, Namibia, Malawi, Tanzania, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda and Botswana. She won the Ghana Open in 1998. Prior to that she was awarded the sportswoman of the year in 1990 and had a training stint in 1989 soon after joining the National Team at the Vivian Sanders Golf School in Cambridgeshire in the United Kingdom. The training was for two weeks.

Tara has not only scored success with the National Team but she has been the Ndola Golf Club Ladies Champion for 27 Years from 1989. What an Achievement!! She is now a grandmother but still has the sucker punch! She is still playing in a single digit of 8 handicap so she has not slowed down that much. With her best handicap being 6 she can still explode and be a champ once more.!!!

GOLF ADMINISTRATORS OF THE CENTURY

This centenary celebration is also a time to reflect and give an account of the trends of events as they happened in the last 100 years. This space looks at the Golf administration of the Ndola Golf Club Many have contributed their time to offer administrative services to the club but one outstanding contribution is that of Allister McLean. The club was started in May 1921 composed mainly of settler community members who were looking for recreational facilities for their town. Allister McLean came to Northern Rhodesia then in February 1948 at his prime. He was 35 years old and playing good golf. He was convinced that his stay would be only for 4 years in the country and return to Australia. He was totally wrong and ended up staying for 24 years. As a golfer he not only won the

Club Championship 1949, a year after his arrival, but also in 1951, and 1955. In 1948 the year of his arrival he was a runner-up and he repeated these achievements in 1950,1952, 1954, and 1956’ In addition to his golfing skills he also held a impressive administrative record. The year he joined the club he served as a committee member and in 1954 to 1958 as a Club Captain. It was during this time as Captain that he developed the idea of a professional tournament that he coined the Cock ‘O’North played over 54 holes. He was chair for the organising committee for the 14 years that followed.

He later, became the President of Ndola Golf Club from 1959 to 1965 and also served as President of the Northern Rhodesia Golf Union from 1958 to 1963 and as President of the Central African

Golf Union from 1963 to 1964. In 1965 he was President of the Zambia Golf Union until 1970 when he resigned. However, in the previous years he was made member of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.

Allister was a golfer and also an administrator, but more so he was a practical person. It was during his time as Club Captain that he positively contributed to the transition of the Club course from slag putting grounds to to greens putting grounds. He was the Chairman of the Committee that was responsible for the construction of the current first 9 holes from virgin bush with the help- of a golf course Architect, Robert Grimsdell who was advising on the fairways.

Allister also had success in the world of commerce where he was associated with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, The Zambia Trade Fair, Rhodesia Railways. After his 24 years of stay in Zambia, he relocated back to his Country but remained a regular visitor to Zambia his legacy still lives at Ndola Golf Club.

GOLF GAMES

Golf, as a game, has many versions that can be played by competitors. Like a game of football played over 90 minutes, you should play 18 holes. Some courses are only designed as 9 holes but such courses will have a back Tee for each fairway to make it 18-holes. Golf games include Stroke-play or medal, Stable-ford, Bogey, Cross country, Match Play and Better Ball four-some’s. The list is long and depends on the organisers who decide on the format. There is a game for all starters, beginners and the experienced. This depends highly on the type of the competition. For Opens the game is Stroke Play/ Medal used also in professional tournaments, where each stroke counts and for amateurs the hand-cap comes into play as it must be subtracted at the end of addition of strokes.

As an affiliate member of the Zambia Golf Union (ZGU), official games are created by the ZGU and a calendar is released that way at the beginning of the year to guide on all ZGU official games such as Club Opens, Quadrangle competitions, Juniors competitions. These also include international engagements like ZONE 6

games that follow the Africa Golf Union calendar. These should never compete with any other social game such as fund raisers on the official day of the ZGU sanctioned game. Ultimately the Golf Game is regulated by St Andrews in Scotland. They set the rules and guide in a number issues regarding the game

IF YOU DRIVE WITH VISION THEN DISTANCE IS NOT A PROBLEM

DRIVE WITH VISION AND GET THE DISTANCE

LADIES GOLF

The Ladies Golf circuit follows the Zambia Ladies Golf Union (ZLGU) calendar at a national level. They also have an international golf calendar. At Club Level leadership is led by the Lady Captain. It is difficult to pin point the time when ladies started playing golf. Records show that may be this was 1931 when they had the first Lady Captain. The ZLGU has been in for 58 years in Zambia. Even if the ladies golf was started many years ago the officially did not create the Union to regulate their games that early. However, ladies were always helping with men’s golf going back to the creation of the club in 1921. This is unlike the famous Augusta National Golf Club which was started in 1932, some 11 years after Ndola Golf Club was initiated. The policy of the club, at that time, was not to admit ladies for membership even as late as 2002 when a point of disagreement arose between the Chair of Women’s Organisations, Martha Burk and the Augusta Chairman who she accused of sexism on the account of not admitting women to membership.

The Club insisted that their policy was a single gender membership and that they had the right to organize the club the way they wished after all it was their club and ownership was private. However, this changed in 2012 when Condoleezza Rice was admitted to membership together with Darla Moore on August 20th 2012 By 2018 an Augusta Women’s Amateur 54-hole Championship was established for top amateur golfers.

The Ladies section now plays Order of Merit Stroke play which is well supported in player numbers from around the Country. The other engagements are international games within the ZONE 6 members. The Union has evolved from the Central Africa Golf Union to Northern Rhodesia Ladies Golf Union to the Zambia Ladies Golf Union (ZLGU) at independence.

The most recent women’s professional circuit under the Sunshine Tour was held in March 2014 which was also to commemorate the 50 years of Ladies Golf in Zambia. The tournament was not only historical but a land mark event

as it brought the women professional golfers to Zambia and Ndola in particular backed by Women’s Professional Golf Association (WPGA)

MEMBERSHIP

Membership at Ndola Golf Club is open to anybody. It comes in categories of Ordinary Member, Social members (non-Playing) Junior member and Life member. The Life membership is given to outstanding individuals who have been with the Club for a long time like Godfrey Mbawala and have made such contributions that are worthy the life membership.

The beginning was not that easy, as the membership was predominately white members. It was not until 1962 when, one called Harry John Rutherford, made a difference. He was of mixed blood, his father being white and the mother local black, He made a historic land mark by being the first non-white to be admitted to club membership in 1962. The Club memory about him lingers on Hole number 18 which is called Harry Rutherford Fairway to his memory.

HARRY RUTHERFORD - LIFE MEMBER.

The FIRST person of colour to be granted membership to the Club in May 1962.

Harry was a regular in assisting the Cock ‘O the North Organising Committee over the years, and travelled with the Zambian Golf Team on a number of their tours abroad.

Little did he realise when becoming a member all those years ago that his younger son Keith would represent Zambia on numerous occasions, his oldest son Garry would captain the Club in

2003--2004 and 2014 and that his oldest grandson Dayne Moore would be the first Professional Golfer as a product of Ndola Golf to play on the Sunshine Tour. Hole No. 18 has been named the Harry Rutherford Fairway in his memory.

PAT PUTA - LIFE MEMBER --- CAPTAIN IN 1980/1983 & 1984.

The FIRST “indigenous” Zambian Captain of Ndola Golf Club.

Pat was a dedicated member and through his position at the Ndola City Council Pat always assisted the Club with the loan of tractors and cutting equipment when required during the rainy season.

The only cost to the Club was the wage for the day for the tractor driver and fuel.

He was instrumental in bringing late President Kaunda to play for the very first time at Ndola Golf Club in 1987.

COLIN KINNEAR - LIFE MEMBER / TRUSTEE & CAPTAIN IN 1986.

Colin was always involved in the Organising Committee for the C.O.T.N. Tournaments over the years

And Colin and his wife Dorothy were regulars on the course on a Sunday morning.

LIONEL DINGLE - LIFE VICE-PRESIDENT & CLUB PRESIDENT IN 1993.

Evergreen Lionel “SWING WITH DING” served as Course Manager for many years until he relocated to Lusaka to be with his children—Troy and Sharon-- and prepared our course during the C.O.T.N. and the SUNSHINE TOURS .

A dedicated member who with the support of his wife Joan spent many hours ensuring that our course was always in playable condition.

NDOLA GOLF CLUB AT 100 41
THE FOLLOWING IS A VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ON PAST MEMBERS WHO HAVE PLAYED A PART IN LATTER YEARS IN VARIOUS ROLES DURING THEIR MEMBERSHIP AT NDOLA GOLF CLUB AND TO WHOM WE ARE MOST GRATEFUL.

CHARLES STACEY--- LIFE VICE-PRESIDENT / TRUSTEE & CLUB PRESIDENT IN 1975 & 1985.

VAL STACEY - LIFE MEMBER / LADY CAPTAIN IN 1978 & 1988.

The Stacey family were very active members of Ndola Golf Club over many years as will be noted above that both Charles and Val. served as President and Lady Captain respectively for the second time 10YEARS after their first stint.

Charles was the Club lawyer, played a very active part in both the C.O.T.N. and Sunshine Tour Tournaments and served as Tournament Referee on numerous occasions.

ALEX MASHANO - Alex was the vice chairman of the Centenary Committee until his untimely death on 20th June 2021.

Alex was always willing to assist the club and was on every Sunshine Tour Committee and served as the Chairman of the very successful Ladies Sunshine Tour of Zambia in 2014. Alex was a former Zambia Golf Union President and served on various portfolios within the Z.G.U.

He is sadly missed by Ndola Golf Club and the Zambian Golfing fraternity.

PERCY NG’ANDWE - LIFE MEMBER / CAPTAIN 1990 & PRESIDENT 2002.

Percy was a dedicated member of the Club over many years and with his vast organisational skills and knowledge of the game was on every Sunshine Tour Committee .

Percy also served as Zambia Golf Union President .

ANDREAS SCOTT - CLUB PRESIDENT IN 2012 - 2013 - & 2014.

In the relatively short time that Andreas was a member of the Club, he was always under the radar with respect to his contribution to the Club. The majority of members were not aware of the substantial assistance he rendered to the Club as he did not like to “advertise” as he referred to his assistance and donations.

NDOLA GOLF CLUB AT 100 42

JOHN & GERRY WOODHOUSE

John and Gerry go way back to the Cock O’ the North days of home hospitality and Gerry was a member of the Diamond Jubilee Organising Committee in charge of Accommodation – “ home hospitality” as it was referred to in those days.

John served as Course Manager for a number of years and was responsible for a number of improvements to the course during his tenure.

A very hard working Course Chairman, who would on a number of occasions be out there inspecting the course and delegating the day’s work before heading off to the office--- a reputation which earned him the respect of the membership and workforce.

KEN LAMB - CLUB PRESIDENT IN 1976 - 1977 & PART OF 1978.

Ken Lamb passed away suddenly during his term of office as Club President in 1978 having served in this position in 1976 and 1977.

His untimely death in his third consecutive year as Club President was a severe shock to the membership.

The Club had lost a dedicated member whose family were always a part of Ndola Golf Club and

Dave Failie the vice-captain at the time assumed the role of Club President for the remainder of the 1978/79 club year.

JENNY LAMB - LIFE MEMBER.

JENNY LAMB is a household name at Ndola Golf Club and apart from selling the famous booze raffles and chicken raffles every Saturday--- a wise selection by the Club Executive as they knew that it was difficult to say NO to Jenny.

She was the official “MASTER STARTER” at Ndola Golf Club over many years.

We recall her penalising a visiting golfer from Kitwe for being late on tee to which he asked those gathered on the tee “who is this old lady giving me a hard time?” to which late Brian Moyo replied.

“Give this old lady a hard time and the whole of Ndola Golf Club will come down on you like a ton of bricks.” Very true--- such was the love and respect that the membership had for Jenny Lamb.

Their son Stewart served as our Captain in 2001 and Ken and Stewart are the only “father and son” to have held the office of President and Captain of the Club to date.

ERIC AND NANCY RAY - BOTH LIFE- MEMBERS, When their playing days came to an end Eric and Nancy devoted themselves to the task of checking and confirming all score cards for all Saturday and Fund Raiser competitions over a number of years.

Their decisions seldom got questioned.

Nancy also served as Club Manager for a while.

NDOLA GOLF CLUB AT 100 43

J.B. JERRARD - WELL BEFORE OUR TIME and must be mentioned—however briefly.

Mr. J.B. Gerrard --- as Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce at the time was instrumental in persuading prominent members of the business community to donate land to Ndola Golf Club which enabled the Club to progress from a 9 hole course on the opposite side of Nkana Road to the present 18 hole course.

His granddaughter is Mrs. Marion Gatchell and 4 generations of the Gatchell family have played at Ndola Golf Club as members and her husband Howard is a long standing – nonplaying member of the Club.

GEOFF ROBINSON AND NIGEL PEARSO—Two outstanding and dedicated members who served the Club over many years during the days of the C.O.T.N.

CHRIS ANDREWS - our special thanks to Chris -a journalist by profession and who served on committees during the days of the C.O.T.N. --- for supplying us with information on the membership etc. during the days of the C.O.T.N. for the Brochure.

Chris joined the Club in 1973 and was a member until him and his family left to settle in the U.K. in 1982.

From past experience -- there are no doubt a number of deserving members who may have inadvertently been overlooked— to whom we sincerely apologise for this oversight.

The majority of the above to whom we are eternally grateful for ensuring that we have a Club after 100 years have since passed on and MAY THEIR SOULS REST IN ETERNAL PEACE.
