Welcome ...to our Spring season programme! As always, we have a wealth of great music, dance, theatre and literature events to keep you entertained over the coming months. Our free classical music series Mid-day Mantra (page 3) kicks things off again in January, with music to uplift your spirits and celebrate the New Year.

For all you budding writers, don’t forget that the closing date for entries for our international writing competition ‘Inspired by Tagore’ is 31 January 2012. You can find details, including the entry form, on our website.

We’re delighted to announce that sampad has teamed up with Birmingham Hippodrome as part of Birmingham City Council’s Arts Champions scheme. Our first Arts Champions project together, E.A.T, is focussed on family-friendly arts activities inspired by the theme of food and we’ll be providing lots of opportunities for people in Harborne, Edgbaston, Quinton and Bartley Green to roll up their sleeves and get creative.

As the country gears up for London 2012 this summer, our Dancing for the Games project Moving Earth continues to gain pace, with more chances for people across the West Midlands to try out fun, high-energy martial arts moves from India at open workshops and taster sessions. Moving Earth will combine martial arts dance moves in the form of Chhau with diverse dance styles from the UK, as we develop 20 groups of 12 dancers around the region to perform at public events in the run up to the Games. To extend the legacy of the project, we’re proud to confirm that selected participants from these groups will receive leadership development training specifically designed for young producers, designers and tutors. Music Saturdays

Sabha is sampad’s popular showcase for local and emerging talent. This show features South Asian music with a contemporary vibe including Fursan, a unique Islamic World Music band fusing energetic drum beats with inspiring spoken word poetry, Harjinder Matharu’s percussion group on tabla, dhol and cajon and Nix Dadry playing an original acoustic set.

Education and Learning We’re currently offering the workshops below: Poetry through the Panchatantra introduces children to the ‘Five Moral’ folk tales from Indian tradition through mask characterisation, music, poetry and story development.

Lori uses South Asian lullabies to engage Early Years children in the use of music, movement and sound.

Holi workshops are available in March to help children explore colour through visual arts as part of the vibrant Indian festival which celebrates the new life & energy of Spring.

‘Artists in Schools’ provides workshops to help artists develop their practice as creative educators.

Technicolour India The Festival of Colour (Holi) is the inspiration for an evening of short films and animations with KINO10 exploring Indian life and culture.

Enjoy a live performance of traditional Indian music from tabla maestro Mohinder Singh aka Mendi (below), Leighton Hargreaves on violin and Dan Wilkins on the Kora. The evening will also include Indian refreshments and a tour of Indian objects and colourful European paintings in the Barber’s collection.

A Moment of Mishearing An all-new eclectic stage production by celebrated Indian writer Amit Chaudhuri.

In conversation with Amit Chaudhuri Amit Chaudhuri is one of India’s leading novelists and a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. He was the editor of Picador’s anthology, Modern Indian Writing, and was also the first Indian to judge the Man Booker International Prize. He is currently a Professor of Contemporary Literature at the University of East Anglia.

A two hour performance of words, songs, ideas, readings with Amit Chaudhuri and the Amit Chaudhuri Band bringing together the literary and musical ideas which have shaped the life and work of one of India’s leading novelists and musicians.

A man is in prison after the death of a teenage boy during an exorcism. He is little trouble for the prison staff at first but soon after his arrival, circumstances change. When prisoners who taunt him suffer unexplainable injuries and prison officers start behaving strangely, Mustafa realises the entity he tried to banish from the young victim’s body is still with him.

Kailash Kher Saregama Events present Kailash Kher with his band Kailasa. Kailash is a revered singer, lyricist & composer from India whose prodigious vocal gifts, poignant writing and inspiring personality have made him a household name across the subcontinent, with super hit songs like Allah Ke Bandey, Tu Jaane Na, Ya Rabba and Chak De Phattay.

As well as performing his Bollywood hits, he’ll be joined by his band Kailasa to perform their popular songs Teri Deewani, Dilruba, Jhoome Re, Saiyyan, Piya Ghar Aavenge and Bheeg Gaya Mera Man, new tracks from their upcoming album Rangeele and some Nusrat favourites.
