Looks like you’ve managed to get ahold of the latest HARPER & BROOKS product catalogue. Behind it is a lot of sweat and toil. Long nights and hundreds of cups of coffee. Since we started in the fall of 2015, we’ve had a crazy trajectory, and we’re so grateful for all the help and support we’ve gotten along the way. Starting in the back room of a shop fueled by ambition and caffeine, we’ve seen HARPER & BROOKS launch in international retail. We’ve learnt a lot, and we’ve changed a lot – the feedback has been amazing, and we are ecstatic to see the growth, both in sales and on social media. Our dedication to our design principles are still the same – clean, bold and instantly recognizable. Our ambition is to build a solid and long-lasting brand renowned for premium quality, timeless classics. The enclosed content reflects both our heritage and our sources of inspiration. We will take you to Juvet Landscape Hotel - one of Norway’s hidden gems - to explore the fusion of modern architecture and closeness to nature - both which are close at heart to us. For the launch of our new SWISS MADE series we went out searching for the modern-day berserker - read what we found hanging in free fall some 700 meters above the icy water of Ringedalsvatnet in Western Norway. A travel in time between the simple life and the vibrant metropolitan. HARPER & BROOKS is designed in Norway, the western part of Scandinavia renowned for its steep mountains and deep fjords towards the Atlantic sea. The Norwegian spectacular nature with its breathtaking views from top of high mountains as well as the vibrant city life of NYC is our inspiration. We believe in having things both ways. Simple and spectacular. Classic and contemporary. Exclusive, still affordable.

BACKGROUND

Behind the concept are two Norwegian entrepreneurs Ole Øivind Skaar and Espen Kopperud who met in 2014 and bonded over a mutual love for watches. They spotted a gap in the market when they couldn’t find any watches of premium quality and clean design at an accessible price point. Inspired by the classic watches of the 1950’s, Norwegian company HARPER & BROOKS wanted to modernise the old-school watch dial by giving it clean lines combined with contemporary straps in various colours and textures. In early 2015 they set up HARPER & BROOKS. We want to create beautiful, premium quality and thoughtfully designed products. Combining our skills in design and care for details, our ambition is to build a solid and long-lasting brand renowned for premium quality, timeless classics. Norway and the US are tightly connected through history, and the name HARPER & BROOKS comes from the two founders’ fascination for the NYC vibrant lifestyle in contrast to Scandinavian calmness, serenity and closeness to nature.

NORWAY FAST FACTS

HIGHEST MOUNTAIN Norway’s highest mountain is Galdhøpiggen, 2469 meters above sea level. Galdhøpiggen is the highest summit in the Nordic countries, outperforming Kebnekaise in Sweden by 358 meters. DEEPEST FJORD Sognefjorden is the deepest fjord, with maximum depth of 1 308 meters. It’s also Norways longest fjord with a total lenght of 206 km, which makes it the third longest fjord worldwide. NUMBER OF LAKES Even another Nordic country - Finland - has been named “The Land of a Thousand Lakes”, Norway’s lakes do in fact far outnumber Finland’s. Approximately 450.000 lakes in Norway are identified, compared to 180.000 lakes in Finland. DEEPEST LAKE While Norway’s freshwater lakes are modest in size, several are among the deepest in the world. Hornhindalsvannet, with a depth of at least 514 meters, is the deepest lake in Europe and the 12th deepest in the world. Norway’s largest lake, Mjøsa - close to Lillehammer which held the 1994 Olympic Games, is the 2nd deepest lake in Europe and the 19th deepest in the world. INVENTIONS AND CHEESE Norway has made two inventions that we are proud of the Ostehøvel (cheese slicer) and the Binders (paper clip). Norwegians love brown cheese, a type of sweet cheese that is not really a cheese. The origin of the brown cheese is Gudbrandsdalen, a valley 300km north of the capital Oslo. Ole Øivind - one of the founders of HARPER & BROOKS - is born and raised at a milk farm in in Gudbrandsdalen. LONGEST ROAD TUNNEL Norway has the world’s longest road tunnel, the Lærdal road tunnel with a total lenght of 24.5 km. There are no less than five speeding cameras inside the tunnel. The tunnel was built to to make the main road between Oslo and Bergen unaffected by winter storms.

SWISS HEART Switzerland is a country where the art of Horology date back hundreds of years. To have reliable and accurate timepieces are clear reasons for us to have a Swiss heart.

The movement is the true heart of the timepiece. It is the one of the most essential components and it is crucial to get it right. Our Swiss movements are produced in the Basel region in the Northern part of the country. A part of Switzerland where the craftmanship of watchmaking dates back hundreds of years. Countries like Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom were very successful following the Industrial revolution. They had large amounts of natural resources and vast lands exceptionally good for farming. Switzerland never really had any resources like coal, iron or steel nor did they have a good foundation for farming. They needed to do something different to succeed as a nation. They had to develop profound skills they could master so well that no other nation could match them. And so they did. They started making watches. Father to son the skills and craftmanship passed down generation by generation as technological advances constantly improved the level of perfection. Today the combination of manual craftsmanship and processed automation provide a sound foundation of making truly high quality time instruments. We at HARPER & BROOKS are truly passionate about watchmaking, and we want our timepieces to be reliable and accurate. Clear reasons for us to have a Swiss heart.

Our mission it to build great timepieces. An integral part of any great timepiece – is a high quality strap. In our strive for perfection we have partnered with Tärnsjö Garveri (english: Tärnsjö Tannery) in Sweden. Tärnsjö Garveri produces the highest premium vegetable tanned leather available in the market. Since inception in 1873, Tärnsjö Garveri has developed an unique craftmanship and knowledge of leather which is unmatched in the industry. Tärnsjö Garveri is among the 5% of tanning houses worldwide that still employ the tradition of vegetable tanning in favor of the more time and cost-efficient chrome excel method. Vegetable tanning means that you use bark extracts from nature instead of metal. In addition to being kind to Mother Nature this process makes a leather that ages beautifully. The tannery employs 50 remarkable individuals with unsurpassed experience in the art of vegetable tanning and saddlery. On an annual basis they produce 900,000 square feet of the world’s finest vegetable tanned leather using hides from local Swedish farms. A BREAK IN THE FOREST Tucked away on a remote mountainside in the heart of western Norway is a hotel out of the ordinary.

It’s been fifty kilometers since the last gas station and our photographer is getting seriously worried we might run out of gas. The last stretch up Trollstigen (the Trolls’ Path), the famous serpentine road with its hairpin bends has taken its toll on our mileage. As the car struggles with the steep inclines, we are blessed with views of the dramatic landscape that unfolds beneath us. Besides a lonely tractor we haven’t seen another car for the past hour, yet somewhere between the town of Åndalsnes (pop. 2244) and Valldal (pop. 997) is our destination and the unlikely location of one of Europe’s best kept secrets – the Juvet Landscape Hotel. As we drive down the graveled path we are greeted with a view of the 16th century farmstead that serves as the hotel’s kitchen, reception and restaurant. It stands in stark contrast to the rest of the hotel – the seven glass-faced minimalist cabins designed by Jensen & Skodvin are nestled between the looming mountains, all facing the icy blue water of the Valldøla river. The layout of the hotel is tailored to the local topography, each cabin facing a different view of the surrounding nature. Inside, they are austere. A lamp, a bed and two designer chairs, all in various shades of brown and grey – nothing to distract you from enjoying the view. It comes with some quirky features as well, like the canary yellow bathroom and the little slat above your bed that you can open to hear the rush of the river below. This fusion of modern architecture and closeness to nature is close at heart to us, as our own designs draw inspiration from both. The luxury you find at Juvet isn’t the glitzy champagne-filled kind. It’s a much more subtle and rare luxury – to share a moment in time surrounded by nature. Being able to do some quiet reflection. A hotel that will not intrude upon nature, but rather exist in harmony with the landscape of which it is a part. The aesthetic undeniably resonates with our own - the clean lines of the understated architecture. The fusion of glass, steel and natural materials providing endless inspiration. And as we prepare for the journey home we find ourselves longing for a last glimpse of the river running through the gorge.

THE BERSERK SERIES FOR THE LAUNCH OF OUR NEW SERIES WE WENT OUT TO SEARCH FOR THE MODERN-DAY BERSERKER. THIS IS WHO WE FOUND.

INTRODUCING THE BERSERK SERIES 700 meters above the icy waters of Ringedalsvatnet in Western Norway is Trolltunga, a piece of bedrock jutting straight out of the mountainside.

BERSERK [bæ`∫ærk] is an ancient Norwegian concept from the Viking era describing Norse warriors that “went berserk”. To us BERSERK expresses Norwegian courage and vigor. So for the launch of our new series, we needed to team up with someone who truly embodied these values. Some 700 meters above the icy water of Ringedalsvatnet in Western Norway is Trolltunga, a piece of Precambrian bedrock jutting straight out of the mountainside. It is only accessible by a ten hour round trip hike leading up to the rock itself, providing views of the impossibly steep-sided fjords on the way. For seven times Nordic climbing champion Magnus Midtbø, it’s another day at work. Can it be climbed? Being wary of the sharp edges which could potentially cut his rope, he slowly descends to examine the underside of the rock. In his own words, it was the perfect spot to give his legs a much needed break, and to snap a few photos. When Magnus isn’t busy winning competitions and ascending some of the world’s most difficult routes he is a stone’s throw away from our office in Oslo. We invited him in for a chat and to hand him one of the first BERSERK series watches. The BERSERK series adds a new line of high-quality timepieces to the HARPER & BROOKS aesthetics. Building on our simple and clean design principles, we wanted to make a truly high-quality SWISS MADE timepiece featuring a Swiss Ronda 6004.D movement, Sapphire Crystal glass and premium vegetable tanned leather straps from the prestigious Tärnsjö Garveri in Sweden. The bezel and case are built in 316L stainless steel, and the dial includes a second-hand sub-dial with minimal indexing.
