On Course Leo’s Group Makes It Easy Twenty-five years ago, Leo Limberakis was just looking for some fellow golfers to join him on the WHGC course—easier said than done. “I kept going up to the course, and there would be nobody to play with,” said Leo. “It’s difficult to pick up the phone and get together a threesome or foursome.” Leo knows a little bit about commitment. Age 96, he has been married to his wife, Kathrine, also 96, for over 70 years. Together they raised a family and ran several successful restaurants in town, notably the Clam Shack, now run by his son, James. But he also knows that making a regular commitment to play golf can be difficult for many men. So he came up with the idea for Leo’s Group, although it wasn’t called that until years later. From the General Manager Dear Woods Hole Members… By the time you read this column, the 2013 Summer Cocktail Party will be long over…but not in our memories! Wow, what a party! If you were there, you know what I’m talking about, and if you couldn’t make it, plan on next year—August 8, 2014. As we all know, there are several things that make for a great party, and we had them all— plenty of good food and beverage, a terrific band (in this case we had two of them), perfect weather (that’s why we’re here on Cape Cod) and plenty of friends in a festive spirit! Speaking of which, we are very proud that 335 Members and guests enjoyed the party this year, compared to 175 last year. I am also pleased to add that the Staff enjoyed the party almost as much as our Members. We all prepared and worked hard to make it special, and we are already working on next year’s Summer Party, Friday, August 8, 2014. One of the many things I enjoy in club management is collecting Member suggestions on new menu items they would like to try. Unlike public restaurants and hotels, private clubs must update their menus more frequently since the Members come back more often. At the same time, private club menus must keep the Member “favorites” that everyone enjoys. Since that’s our goal, I’m always asking Members for what they like…and, of course, what they would like to see changed. So after some Member input, Chef Jim Litman and I have worked through six new menu dishes, and one improvement, including: • Trio Salad: A club classic of our most popular home-made salads—Chicken, Tuna and Egg on a bed of fresh greens. • Shaved Steak Sandwich: Shaved sirloin and tenderloin steak on a toasted potato roll with grilled Vidalia onions and horseradish sauce. Manager’s Letter (continued from page 1) • G rilled Hanger Steak: Grilled and sliced hanger steak with spicy chimichurri sauce. Choice of side dish. • Shrimp and Farfalle Pesto: Sautéed shrimp with bowtie pasta in creamy pesto sauce. • Roast Cornish Game Hen: Split and roasted with rosemary, lemon and garlic with a large arugula salad, sliced tomatoes with balsamic vinegar and extra-virgin olive oil. Served with grilled country bread. • Pan Roasted Halibut: Fresh fillet dusted with fresh herbs, then seared and basted with lemon butter. Served with wilted spinach and roasted new potatoes. The improvement menu item is the Bone-In “Cowboy” Ribeye, which is moving from 16 to 18 ounces! After considerable testing, we are buying the new steak from a different vendor, and the results have been very positive. I encourage all Members to let me know how you enjoy, not only these new items, but also the rest of the menu. Well, I’m going to keep this column short and sweet because we have so many Member photos to share this month. See you around the Club, Michael

Women’s Tennis Member-Guest Event Brings Players Together
Jonathan O’Herron, Jr. Tennis Committee Chair
The first Annual Women’s Tennis Member-Guest event took place on Thursday, July 25. Sixteen women, members and their guests, played a round robin in the morning and then gathered for lunch on the Clubhouse Patio. “It was a beautiful day, lots of fun, with great participation from the membership,” said Suellen Wheeler, the Club’s Director of Tennis. “It was great to see both new members and longstanding members who don’t usually play tennis at the Club join in. Lunch was delicious and provided the chance for members and guests alike to get to know players from other areas.”

Leo’s Group (continued from page 1) member of Leo’s Group who wants to play simply shows up at 11:00 a.m. that day for an 11:30 a.m. tee-off. No reservations needed. Teams are made up on the ABCD system so that the overall skill levels are comparable from team to team. Leo’s Group plays Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesdays, they join the Bandits, another Men’s Group at the Club, and play at 9:00 a.m. “If you like golf and you want to play as often as you can, it’s an easy way to do it,” said Mal Robertson. A member of the Club since 1974, Mal joined Leo’s Group when he retired from banking 12 years ago. “You know there will always be a group of guys there.” Paul Dussault, a retired pharmacist in town who is now a realtor, agrees. “I knew a lot of people, but it was difficult to find people who wanted to play when I wanted to play,” he said. “Now, I could be doing something at work; decide my day is done; and think, I’ll go play with Leo’s Group.” The group is always looking for new members, and Mal stressed that anyone interested in joining shouldn’t be concerned about his current expertise. “We have players at all levels,” he said. “No matter what your handicap, you will fit in.” Mike Gabriel, a retired anesthesiologist, agrees the group is inclusive, but he also says it is competitive, which is one of the things he likes about it. “I always like competition,” he said. “And I particularly like when I win the pot!” Golfers put $5 in the pot in the morning, and the team with the lowest score takes home the loot. But the bottom line for the players is the sense of camaraderie and friendship they find in the group. “You can’t help but get to know people well if you are playing with them several times a week,” Mike said. “You make good friends.” They are friendships that take place beyond the golf course. Whether meeting for a drink at the 19th hole; sitting on the porch before teeoff and talking about what’s going on in the world; or gathering with their wives at the Club for the Leo’s Group Dinners, which take place throughout the summer, the members have forged strong relationships. And it’s all because Leo, or, as the members of the group often call him, The Commissioner, needed someone to play golf with.
Become a Member of Leo’s Group
Leo’s Group is a welcoming, inclusive group of men who play at WHGC most weekdays at 11:30 a.m. If you would like to join, all you have to do is arrive at the Clubhouse at 11:00 a.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. Or, come Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. to play with The Bandits. You do not have to make a commitment to play on a regular basis, and whatever your handicap is, you will fit in. Just show up when it is convenient for you. If you would like more information, contact Glenn Kelly at glennpkelly@aim.com or at the Pro Shop, 508-540-1899.
Leo Says Thank you for Birthday Wishes
Leo Limberakis, founder (aka The Commissioner!) of Leo’s Group, turned 96 on July 21. He has asked On Course to thank everyone who sent him best wishes as he celebrated this milestone in his life. A successful businessman, restaurateur and golfer, Leo stresses how important his wife of 70 years, Katherine, has been in building their life together. “She was just as instrumental to the success of my family and business life as anything I did,” he said. Congratulations, Leo!
In Sympathy We recently have been saddened by the loss of two Woods Hole Golf Club Members. • Avery Thompson Funkhouser 1939–2013 • Alice Carol Merckens Chappell 1942–2013 Our sympathy goes out to family and friends.
Leo and Katherine Limberakis.

Members and Guests Play for P.I.N.K. It was smack in the middle of one of the longest heat waves in Boston-area history, but that didn’t stop the women of WHGC and their guests from coming out to support Play for P.I.N.K. This was the third consecutive year for the Club tournament, which raises money for breast cancer research. Play for P.I.N.K. is a national organization that encourages groups to run events to support The Breast Left to right: Sally Dean, Ellen Chapman, Cancer Research Foundation. P.I.N.K. stands for PreGail McCready and Ann Bain. vention, Immediate Diagnosis, New Technology and Knowledge. Karen Whitney, a WHGC member, had participated in a Play for P.I.N.K. golf tournament in the Boston area and thought it would be a great project for the Club. A retired event planner, she volunteered her time and skills to organize the tournament for WHGC. “It’s always a day people love to come to,” she said. “Everyone knows someone who’s suffered from breast cancer, and this is a way for them to contribute. But it’s also a lot of fun.” Eighty-three golfers and eight tennis players participated. Players made a $50.00 contribution to Play for P.I.N.K. Play for P.I.N.K. participants. for lunch in the Dining Room. The table centerpieces were both beautiful and practical—pink-frosted cupcakes. There was also a silent auction, and half of the items donated came from Club employees and members. The total amount raised was $11,425, 100 percent of which goes to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. While the golfers and tennis players were women, men, including Karen’s husband, Dick, volunteered to help with the administrative tasks. And this year, the Club provided pink golf towels, pink tees and pink lemonade. “I want to thank everyone for their support: the participants, volunteers, and Michael Lawrence for the extra touches the Club added,” Karen said. There were awards and prizes for the winners, but, when asked who the top players were, Karen diplomatically responded, “I think Play for P.I.N.K. won.”

Golf/Tennis Biathlon Championship Fun and Spirited Our first Annual WHGC Men’s and Women’s Golf/Tennis Biathlon Championship took place Sunday, July 28. The participants played nine holes of golf, then a round-robin of tennis. “It was a fun and spirited, competition,” said Jon O’Herron, Chairman of the WHGC Tennis Committee. “Mother Nature was kind enough to cooperate, allowing the tennis courts to dry out just in time for the tennis half of the event to occur.” After the games, the players enjoyed refreshments on the Pro Shop Patio and heard the results:

Worth the Wait—Women’s 2012 Doubles Championship Held
WHGC Staffer Brendan Cary Youngest Ouimet Golfer
Brendan Cary and Niall Devaney.
WHGC Staffer Brendan Cary, age 16, who serves our Club as a Bag Room Attendant and Caddy, was the youngest golfer in history to play in the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund Golf Marathon. Brendan, who played 108 holes in one day, and fellow Staffer Niall Devaney participated in the event in July. The golf marathon was played on a series of courses on Boston’s South Shore. The 2013 event was the 21st year of the marathon, which raises scholarship funds for college assistance.
For a variety of reasons, our 2012 Women’s Doubles Championship was delayed, but we were able to finally hold the event in July 2013. Congratulations to Charlotte and Meaghan O’Herron for the win!
