70 Sustainable LNG Re gasification Location: Hypothetical Year: 2014 Type: Industrial, Infrastructure Institute: NICMAR-SODE (PGPIDM Thesis work)

71 gasification Plant

Main LNG Re gasification Plant

The project is an integrated approach towards sustainable growth of In dian LNG re gasification sector in the supply chain of the downstream. Project focuses on how to deliver the most sustainable & viable LNG re gasification plant by integrating it to other physiological Infra-En ergy concepts. Hence the proposal includes an energy plant, Mini OTEC plants, Off shore wind farms, Multi station Trans bay facilities.

74

75 Site plan of the LNG Re gasification facility

The International Multi modal Transport Association defines multi modal transport as the chain that interconnects different links or modes of trans port – air, sea, and land into one complete process that ensures an efficient and cost-effective door-to-door movement of goods under the responsibility of a single transport operator, known as a Multi modal Transport Operator, on one transport document.

3. OTEC: Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) uses the temperature difference be tween cooler deep and warmer shallow or surface ocean waters to run a heat engine and produce useful work, usually in the form of electricity. OTEC is a base load electricity generation system, i.e. 24hrs/day all year long. OTEC can also supply quantities of cold water as a by-product. This can be used for air conditioning and refrigeration and the nutrient-rich deep ocean water can feed biological technologies. Another by-product is fresh water distilled from the sea.

4. WIND FARMS: Since LNG re gasification terminal is based near a sea shore, a scheme of wind turbines generating 1MW energy each could be a long term sustainable possi bility

77 # ReferenceImages (Conceptualization)

1. SOLAR TOWER: Solar updraft tower (SUT). Sunshine heats the air beneath a very wide green house-like roofed collector structure surrounding the central base of a very tall chimney tower. The resulting convection causes a hot air updraft in the tower by the chimney effect. This airflow drives wind turbines placed in the chimney

Sustainable & energy efficient solutions in LNG re gasification 1)Electric LNG 2)Power integration systems (ABB’s) 3)LNG cold energy integration, use of ambient air and sea water 4)Ambient Air LNG Vaporisers (AAV) 5)Indirect Ambient Air Vaporiser (IAV) 6)Reverse Cooling Tower based LNG Vaporiser 7)Indirect AAV with Rankine Cycle to Generate Power 8)Enhanced Heat Integration ` 9)Other integrated infrastructures for sustainable growth • SOLAR TOWER • Multi station & multi modal transports • OTEC • Wind farms • CCS (Carbon capture & storage • Environmental impact statement considerations

LNG has two major benefits compared to natural gas:

1. Transport: Liquefaction of natural gas reduces the volume by approximately 600 times, making it more economical to trans port between continents in specially designed ocean vessels. Over long distances, traditional pipeline transportation sys tems would be less attractive economically. Often, due to geo political compulsions pipelines are not feasible. LNG technol ogy makes natural gas available in places where natural gas is not available in great quantities and pipelines are not feasible.

2. Storage: Liquefaction also provides the opportunity to store nat ural gas for use during high demand periods in areas where geo logic conditions are not suitable for developing underground stor age facilities. In regions where pipeline capacity from supply areas can be very expensive and use is highly seasonal, liquefaction and storage of LNG occurs during off-peak periods in order to reduce expensive pipeline capacity commitments during peak periods.

LNG Carrier: LNG is transported in specially designed ships with double hulls protecting the cargo systems from damage or leaks. There are sever al special leak test methods available to test the integrity of an LNG Vessel’s membrane cargo tanks. The tankers cost around USD 200 million each.

146 Brief: College Road , Dharwad Length of pilot road: 1.7 km

The road is a major spine connecting several colleges, schools, public buildings, commercial offices, restaurants and temples. Hence, is a thriving destination for pedestrian so fall age-groups throughout the day. While mornings and evenings are populated by student crowd and walkers, the street is occupied by working professionals and visitors to the offices located on the road during the day. The road is a major connector with bus movement but the street has the potential to be elevated as a well-designed complete street that fosters public life. NMT Master Plan identifies this road as a strategic stretch for facilitating a seamless cycling experience in TheDharwad.design solution should include strategies to enhance the char acter of the street and the pedestrian experience through interven tions such as (but not limited to)siting street furniture, amenities, organising street vendors, incorporating an overall greening strate gy and making the area around the site safe for walking.

164 Phase 1: The Festive city Mall

165

This is a mall spread across 11 acres land located at prime location of Poonamallee road vanagaram in Chen nai. This North facing site has an existing Steel PEB structure. Project Built up area- 7,30,000 sq.ft.

166

# Existing site pics

•The existing PEB building was a steel structure (Initially as ware house) which was to b revamped for retail requirements .

•Phase 2:- A 3 star Hotel. Since phase 2 was a high rise structure the entire site had a 10 m setback

•As per areas parking requirement was nearly 1000 in no. (Demand ing 2 levels of basements)

•Project being precast had to be detailed out in very initial stages.

Thematic viewsconceptual&

•The site was a backfilled site which demanded necessity of pile

Design Challenges:

•Thefoundationsmainaccess to mall was very long (more than 200m) which demands an eye catchy landscape to get an engaging transition till mall entrance which would be vibrant, festive & welcoming.

•Due to CMDA’s stringent laws no deviations on site were allowed & this had to be achieved with thorough precision in a precast struc •Integrationture. of Precast structure with steel structure & pile founda tion.

167

•Achieve Festive mood with colours , yet keeping design exposed concrete & minimalistic.

Concept: As the name goes, the client needed a mall which depicts Fes tive mood in their vicinity. The existing PEB structure was going to be revamped into restaurants, breweries, eateries & recreational spaces. The main building was going to house the main mall with Anchors & multiplex of 10 screens. This was a G+4 structure precast structure. As per client’s taste the design philosophy had be minimalistic, made of exposed concrete & yet elegant enough to reflect festive mood

Alternate options of design with minimalistic bare design pattern using exposed Concrete

VME is the precast vendor selected for the project due to their plants site proximity & project feasibility. Theatre sections were dully coordinated with Inox (Multiplex Floortenant)to floor height of building was 5m in precast building & 4m in existing PEB.

As alternative options the main mall being of Precast, posed challenges due to limitations of the system. The Columns were pre cast with Delta beam. The slabs were combination of HCS (Hollow core slab) & solid slab. The existing steel building was also integrat ed with precast as bolted structure. (Views below)

183 Visuals (By

As per clients taste the facades were minimalistic with exposed pre cast wall panels dully lit with lighting system & hoardings.

Various contemporary options of the Parking area were proposed in order to assess the extent of design possibilities to truly change the Dy namic skyline of the mall facility. The Festival mall would truly stand up as not just local icon but would also meet the Global standards & felicitate to change the Fascia of the Vanagaram & Chennai. Multiple options of the driveways were also explored (right page) to get a really modern vista of the mall to give an exhilarating interna tional retail experience.

The structure was a symbol of modern Balangay which would mark their growth & represent their culture. The site was a beach facing site & hence it would only complement the culture of Philippines The condos were designed dully to collect ample diffused light from the North, but cut down the direct harsh sunlight of the south. The challenge was to design a near approximate vaastu compliant design, with 70 car parks, & still achieve natural light & ventilation. Achieving all this was a major challenge due to the irregular site shape. Hence the design was a cluster of 4 interlocking blocks of 4 flats each on a single floor. Clubhouse facility was designed on the parts of ground & first floor in order to have less disturbances. Due to site constraints & need to achieve the FAR area, landscape was only towards the front side of the site & partly ran across the other 3 sides of the site along its pe rimeter. 357 A contemporary dental Clinic for Mrs Manisha Somanath at Do bivali, Mumbai. The areas of the dental clinic was about 200 sq.ft & design required a personal & homely touch to the studio with consideration to per sonal branding & soothing environment for patients Requirements: Consulting area Dental X-rayToilet/Laboratoryarea/OperatorysanitaryareaWashroomroom(ifrequired)

It is rightly believed that healing process starts from waiting area. Waiting area must convey sense of quality care and con nect Doctor's practice to its patients. Due to space constraint the waiting has been allotted outside informally with sooth ing landscape elements like planters, up lighters & seating. To have transparency & openness the consultation is right beside the entrance but with a transparent glass facade. Visual open ness helps the patient be at ease without compromising the pri vacy of consultation area. Well-designed open waiting pro vides glimpse of entire clinic without compromising on privacy. Entrance look of the Clinic. Tiny seating with landscape planters & up lighters give an informal yet soothing in stitutional ambience to the waiting area Looking towards Consultation area; a semi private area for Dentist. (At Right of the page)

361

Consultation room is strategically placed in a way that dentist can have a vision of entire clinic from inside and yet it remains undisturbed even after visually being connected to out side waiting area. Private office provides confidentiality for pa tients. The consultation area has a small partition wall between dental area & consultation to provide segregation & privacy. The wall also acts as an element for display & TV which would also be helpful for guiding the patient during consultation.

Theme: The idea was that interior should truly portray transparen cy to patients. So, waiting, consulting and dental operatory are all aligned in seamless transparency. White is the primary colour of whole interior. Wooden element & rustic stone partition adds a touch of warmth to consulting area. The clinic is designed essen tially with a theme of openness & transparency. Light subtle colour tone with Wenge brown colour complements the same yet mak ing the ambience rich from Branding point of view too. Interior in cool shades of white, beige and subtle Brown , overall creates a calm and peaceful clinic ambience for patients as well as dentist.

362 View Looking through Entrance, consultation area till Dental area

Finishes: For flooring tiles, marbles are common options. Matt fin ish tiles are preferable as glossy tiles would reflect the artificial light harshly and would be slippery. Laminated wooden flooring is restricted to Consultation area. Platform & sinks are of either granite or Corian. Granite is the most durable and cost-effective but in laboratory sink is proposed to be ceramic or polypropyl ene basins, since steel sinks would react or rust against chemicals

363

Shadow Free Lighting: LED fixtures are placed in a way that lighting is even ly spread and working area is completely shadow free. Yellow& golden lighting is restricted only to waiting & consultation area. Uniform lighting is followed in Dental area because it will smoothen the work procedure. Circular & decorative lights are restricted in Consultation & external waiting area (where there are hoardings too)
