Facility Updates DonGuan/Shijie, China Operational
Associate Count: Curently 58 and expecting to grow to 100. DonGuan’s Focus: The Dongguan Design Center (DGDC) is second behind NA in regards to the design and development of new products and provides Samtec the necessary core infrastructure to support our expanding high-speed backplane product offering. The Goal: Located in the city of Shijie, DGDC is located 45 minutes from the Huizhou, China manufacturing location. As 70% of all new products contain insert molding, we knew that expanding our stamping and insert molding capabilities was a necessity. We had the ability to acquire a group of engineers with many years of stamping and insert molding expertise from a local company. Having these resources and experience are needed as we expand our presence in the high-speed backplane market. By locating the facility in Shijie it not only freed up space in Huizhou, but it also gave us a new area with more resources for attracting, securing and most importantly retaining top talent.
Taipei, Taiwan Opened July 3, 2017
Associate Count: Currently 45 and expecting to grow to 75. Taiwan’s Focus: Taiwan’s infrastructure is the foundation of our high-speed RF component and cable assembly design, development, testing and manufacturing. The Goal: Previously, the AP Automation Group (APAG) and our Taiwan Sales / Asia Engineering Group (AEG) were in separate locations. As our need for expanded high-speed RF capabilities increased in Asia Pacific, it made the most sense to combine the resources of APAG and AEG with our newly acquired high-speed RF component and cable assembly manufacturing together in one location. Consolidating all these areas under one roof not only leveraged our existing technical resources, but also gave us synergy across multiple functions. Our new facility also allows for future scalability as our high-speed RF product line grows and sales increase.

Johor Bahru, Malaysia Will open in Mid-August
Associate Count: Currently 265 and expecting to grow to 350 – 400. Johor’s Focus: They produce core 1 mainstream connector products. JB has the highest daily production hours of all our facilities! The Goal: Moving to the new location will support growth as we move contract manufacturing in house as well as expand our advanced manufacturing processes to JB. This will include Automation and possibly Plating.
Vietnam Operational
Associate Count: Currently 18 and expecting to grow to 200 – 300. Vietnam’s Focus: Vietnam will manufacture our Core 1 mainstream products. The Goal: Samtec needed to expand and diversify its footprint in Asia. Vietnam was selected as a proof of concept due to its’ rapidly growing electronics and light manufacturing base, as well as a large pool of available talent. Vietnam has been one of the fastest growing countries for manufacturing in Asia over the past decade where English is taught as a second.
Columbia, South Carolina Operational
Associate Count: Currently 8 Associates. All Engineers. Columbia’s Focus: The South Carolina Design Center (SCDC) gives us an additional office concentrating on all things Signal Integrity. The Goal: Samtec had an unique opportunity to acquire a full team of talented engineers providing us the ability to create a second office focusing solely on Signal Integrity capabilities like high-end modeling, design, layout and system engineering. The addition of SCDC in Columbia also gives us scalability as our need for SI resources continues to increase with access to talent from the University of South Carolina.

SAMTEC PENANG
Samtec Penang recently celebrated their 5 years. Ang Poh Ling, Penang’s HR Administrator, was happy to answer some questions about Samtec Penang. Where is Samtec Penang? Penang, the “Pearl of the Orient”, is located on the northwest coast of Malaysia by the Malacca Strait. It consists of two parts: Penang Island - where the capital city, George Town, is located, and Seberang Perai, on the Malay Peninsula - where Samtec Penang is located.
7 17
How many Associates work at Samtec Penang? Samtec Penang opened its doors with 15 Associates. Currently, there are about 550 Associates, and we are still growing. Why is Penang a good location for Samtec? Penang is ideal for several reasons. First, it offers political and social stability making it a safe place to live and do business. Penang also features solid infrastructure including an International Airport, two bridges that connect mainland to Island/Airport and quality water supply. It is considered low risk geographically since Penang is located outside the Pacific “Ring of Fire”. There is a very skilled, multilingual work force in the country with both industrial and technical experience. There are 300+ multinational corporations in Penang.
When did Samtec Penang open? Samtec Penang officially opened in April 2012. The first production shipment occurred in March 2012 to Samtec Johor Bharu. How has your facility grown? Our first operational area was originally hand fill on the ground floor. At the end of 2013, we split our operation into two areas: Automation on the ground floor and Hand Assembly on the floor above. We also opened our own Associate Canteen in August 2015. What does Samtec Penang make? Our major operation is hand assembly of traditional ERA1 board-to-board connectors such as TSW, TSM and TMM Series, and we have now evolved to manufacturing Q Series High-Speed connectors as well. There are a total of 13 automation machines in the Penang facility.
Why is this important to Samtec Globally? Located in a strategic region with a mature infrastructure and close proximity to customers and suppliers, Samtec Penang contributed 700,000 work hours in 2016 and has potential to scale to a capacity of 1,500,000 hours per year. Samtec Penang produces more than 10% of our global work hours. Explain the culture in Penang. Penang is home to the indigenous boria, a fading art form with singing and dancing once popular among the local Malay community. Lion dance is an ancient art form brought from China by early Chinese immigrants, and over time, it has evolved into a distinctive Malaysian style. What are a few things that Associates wouldn’t know about Samtec Penang? The majority of our staff is Muslim, and 83% of our Associates are female!

Taking the Challenge to Heart
A message from one of Jacob’s mentors, Jerry Cordaro. The journey to becoming a toolmaker starts with the desire to create with your mind and then sculpt with your hands objects of great precision and functionality. To achieve the goal of becoming a toolmaker, the time-honored approach has been to complete an apprenticeship. Now after the completion of both classroom and on the job training of no less than 8,000 hours, Jacob Reid has entered the ranks of Journeymen Toolmakers. Jacob is a special case in the toolmakers’ world. He has spent an additional 5 years pursuing his tooling skills in and around the Southern Indiana he calls home. In the eyes of his mentors and anyone else who can appreciate his talents, he ranks among the full-fledged toolmakers and has served the normal four years’ journeyman path which follows the typical apprenticeship. Now after nine years of learning and developing his craft, he provides Samtec with a true craftsperson capable of work second to none anywhere in the machine tool trade of equal experience. Jacob has devoted himself to his vocation and to Samtec through long hours of work and Sudden Service each, and every time, it has been requested of him. This rising star is carving out a bright future for himself and providing all that a husband and father can for his beautiful family while contributing so very much to the efforts we strive to make here at Samtec. Respected by his coworkers for his abilities and easy going personality, he succeeds in his daily activities in a manner which he makes look easy to the untrained eye. His tasks are difficult to those in the know, yet he endeavors and perseveres undaunted by any challenges presented to him. Congratulations Jacob on a job well done! The State of Indiana has presented you with accreditation papers as a Toolmaker. We look forward to great things from you as you continue to learn and develop. Please accept our heartfelt best wishes. - Jerry Cordaro

Jarrett (left) and Matt Gahafer (right) are twins that work in New Albany in the MIS Department. Both twins have a pair of twins. Jarrett’s twin boys are even born on Jarret’s and Matt’s birthday!
Twin Facts The rate of identical twins is not impacted by race, nationality or genetics, and is about 1 in 285 births.
Identical twins do not run in families and are much less common than fraternal twins. About 35% of twins are left-handed, double the rate of the general population
The only sure way to know if your twins are identical or fraternal (barring them being of different sexes or having different blood types) is a DNA test.
Identical twins do not have identical fingerprints. In a 2016 study from the University of Washington, researchers found that identical twins tend to live longer than fraternal twins, and all twins tend to live longer than the general population.
There are more than two types of twins. Identical, fraternal twins, and mirror-image twins. Mirror-image tw ins can have mirroring features. For example, they may have birthmarks on opposite sides of their bodies.
There’s a gene for fraternal twins. About 4% of births in Nigeria are twins; whereas China’s, one of the lowest, is about 1.1%. Within the US, Massachusetts has the highest rate of twin births 4.5% with the national rate being about 3%.

A Malaysian Tradition
In Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei, Hari Raya Aidil Fitri marks the end of a month of fasting and is a day of joyous celebration. It is a time for food, charity and renewing bonds of friendship and kinship. It is customary for workers in the city to return to their home town to celebrate with their families and to ask forgiveness from parents, in-laws, and other elders. This is known in Malaysia as Balik Kampung (homecoming). It is common practice for MuslimMalaysians to wear traditional cultural clothing on Hari Raya Aidil Fitri known as baju kurung. This type of outfit, worn by both men and women,

is a shirt worn with a sarong and headwear known as songkok. In the rural areas, pelita (oil lamps similar to tiki torches) are lit and placed outside and around homes. Special dishes like lemang (a type of rice cake cooked in bamboo) and other various delicacies are served during this day. It is also customary to light traditional bamboo cannon firecrackers known as meriam buluh during the celebration. People take turns hosting open houses to entertain neighbors, family and other visitors. These open houses are held to share the joy and happiness after observing the fasting month.
Law Enforcement Appreciation Day On June 6th, Samtec New Albany held its first Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Several local officers attended the event, including four furry members of the K-9 team and 2 horses from the Mounted Patrol. The officers provided information on their services and programs and shared some of the many ways everyday citizens can be more actively involved in helping within the community. Donuts were provided for donations, and associates were able to witness the impressive abilities of the K-9 units as they demonstrated a drug search and the apprehension of a fleeing suspect in a bite suit.
Police departments often operate with the help of several volunteer officers who give freely of their time and money to support the department. The K9 units are frequently in need of safety and training equipment. Between Samtec’s donation and the funds collected during the Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, our local officers were able to purchase urgently needed items, including electronic K9 collars that can communicate over long distances, tracking harnesses, bullet-proof dog vests, and officer radios. We appreciate all that local law enforcement does for our community, and love when we have opportunities to give back.

Global User-Centered Design Team Meet the Team You may have heard the term “UX” before but may not be clear on its meaning. UX, or User Experience, describes how people feel when using a product or software, like an app on a smartphone, a website, or a work application. You may have used a poorly designed application on your computer and can recall the frustration that it caused you. For example, think about the last time Facebook made a major change and how it made you feel. On the flip side, a welldesigned application can bring joy and really make your life easier. The MIS User-Centered Design (UCD) Team focuses on the UX of Samtec’s global applications, and how Associates need to use software in their job. This directly relates to you, since most of the software that you use at work has been designed and developed in the MIS Department. The UCD Team spends much of their time working closely with development teams to improve user workflows for efficiency and with Product Owners on fulfillment of business-critical requirements.

Mary Cook, Martin Reimer, Jessi Winner, Jessica Bruner, Drew McKinney and Mark Downs
Research is a central element to our UCD process, and we take time to collect key information in a “Discovery” phase. Our focus is understanding root problems, solving for business goals and learning how Associates do their work. If we built software without asking the right questions, we might risk building the wrong software solution, which would be expensive to rework and detrimental to Samtec. The UCD process helps us truly understand the problem(s) that we are all trying to solve, allowing us to design and develop solutions that meet business needs while improving the life and productivity of our Associates. For us, that is a major Win/Win. The Next Level - Fiber Design Software applications are made up of many complex pieces and represent significant efforts of work. Any place that teams can reuse those pieces in other applications saves time in both design and development effort. Many organizations such as IBM, GE and Microsoft have the same challenges.
Services that the team provides:
Martin Reimer providing an overview of Samtec to the meetup.
The solution is called a design system. It is a set of resources and a library of reusable user interface (UI) components that reduce coding, provide consistency across applications and can improve accessibility. The User-Centered Design team recognizes this as an opportunity to improve our processes and is actively designing a Samtec design system, which is code named Fiber. You can think of these UI components as building blocks. Instead of creating a new set of blocks for every project, we reuse many of the same blocks across projects. A single block could translate to a button on the screen, or something complicated such as a search box or form for entering customer information. Think about how many applications have similar basic functions and could be reused across applications. We are aiming for overall reusability, with rules of use and common patterns. We hope to improve the collaboration between team members and support scalability of high-quality software products. The MIS Development Teams can soon look forward to using Fiber in the near future.

Community Involvement The UCD Team recently hosted a meetup for IXDA Louisville, the local chapter of the Interaction Design Association (IXDA). Members are from Humana, GE, Forest Giant, DBS Interactive, and other local companies. Being a part of IXDA Louisville allows Samtec to engage with the local UX community: learning from one another, sharing ideas, and tackling big problems. The Team members Martin Reimer and Drew McKinney led a talk at the meetup about how the MIS Department uses an Agile development process and about the progression of implementing the user-centered design process. Drew spoke on how the Fiber Design System will help to overcome many integration challenges and will improve both design and development. The meetup began with a tour of the facilities followed by dinner. The team presented after dinner and ended with a question and answer session. The team hopes to host more IXDA meetups in the future.

A GENERATION OF MASCOTS Being the mascot for the University of Louisville is not as easy as it might appear. Louisville has 21 offical sports, so Louie, the Cardinal Bird, stays busy. Louie makes appearances not only at sporting events, but also birthday parties, weddings and other promotional events. Samtec has three Associates that have been Louie. We asked them a few questions. What year(s) were you Louie? Ben: 1986 Madison: 2005-2009 Clayton: 2015-Present How did you become the Louie? Ben: Louie became ill at halftime of the Women’s game at Tennessee State in Nashville, TN. My wife was the UofL cheerleading coach at the time so she asked me to jump in the suit and act natural. Keep in mind the San Diego Chicken was very popular at the time and mascots were “cool”, so I jumped into the suit and led the team to a 7562 victory. Madison: I met Todd Sharp through a warm introduction and I had also met several of the older birds at a student orientation. Clayton: I’ve known Todd Sharp, the spirit coach, since middle school. When I was a senior in high school he asked me and a couple buddies if we were interested and we jumped on board.

2017 Clayton
What is coolest opportunity you have had while being Louie? Ben: The bird suit is not cool, it gets real hot in there. The photo says it all, pretty cool moment in my life. Madison: Met Muhammad Ali, and I held the orange bowl trophy on stage after the game. Clayton: The coolest thing I’ve done so far as Louie was dunking at the IU vs Louisville basketball game at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. What is something most people don’t know about being Louie? Ben: How many personal appearances he makes throughout the land. The “Birds” today put in a lot of hours representing the university. Madison: There is a certain “autograph” you have to learn to do as the bird. Clayton: The new suit cost roughly $5,000. Ben, your wife, Jane had an interesting job. Can you please tell us about it? Ben: My wife, Jane was the Spirit Coordinator from 1999 to 2001. She was asked to help redesign the bird suit to give him a more intimidating presence and to promote the new “wing” logo. The bird went on a summer workout program, lost a few pounds and put on some muscle. See Ben’s picture to the right (left bird she helped design/right bird was old).

Samtec’s Youngest Fans Shortly after our episode on Tanked aired in May, Travis Wild, Customer Service, received a unique chat request from a gentleman named David from Somerset, KY who wanted to know if we sold Samtec gear. He and his family saw our company on Tanked, and his 12 year old son was fascinated by the story. It seems his son, who just happens to also be named Sam, is very electronically gifted and now wants to work for Samtec. David said that Sam is already changing out springs in Nerf guns to maximize accuracy and is convinced he can use gravity as a means of powering things. Travis forwarded the information to the Marketing Department, and after talking more with David, we found out the Sam is actually a triplet. A care package for not just one, but three 12 year olds was quickly sent out filled out with a variety of Samtec goodies like t-shirts, tigers, pens, etc.
Pictured proudly sporting their Samtec swag are Sam (orange shirt), Elizabeth, and Benjamin. In their words … Samtec ROCKS!!
Chat Transcript - May 10, 2017 at 2:06pm Travis: Hello, my name is Travis. How may I help you? David: Hi. Sorry to bother. We saw your company on Tanked. Travis: Yes, I believe that was on Friday. David: Well. Long story short. My 12 year old (very electronically gifted) son is named “Sam”. He wants to work for Samtec. Anyway, and I know this is inane, but does your company sell Samtec gear? He was fascinated by the show, products and the name. Travis: I think the Marketing group does. May I get your email address as well as home address? David: Sure it’s ________________ Somerset, KY Travis: Perfect, I will check with Marketing and follow up with you. Thank you very much. David: Thank you. Have a great day. Travis: Thanks, you do the same. Take care.

GREAT AMERICAN ECLIPSE AUGUST 21, 2017
The most viewed solar eclipse in history will make its way across the United States from coast-to-coast. Millions of people across the United States will see nature’s most wondrous spectacle, if you are in the path of totality. The path of totality is the path across the US in which the moon will block out the sun’s light completely (The thick yellow path on the map to the right). You may experience strange things. Apparent nightfall, dusk to dawn lights may come on. Shadows will look eerie. Breezes may vanish and birds may come in to roost. Also, a 10°–15° F drop in temperature is not unusual. Even if you can’t travel to the path of totality, you can still view a partial eclipse that will cover at least 50% of the Sun, if you are in the US. Meaning that some, but not all, of the Sun will be blocked by the moon. That may not sound like much, but it turns out to be an amazingly rare event! You see, the paths of totality for most eclipses path’s travel over oceans, islands and continents, with no regardwhatsoever for human borders or the geography of the landscape over which they pass. For an eclipse path to touch only one county and no other, is reasonably rare.
Yes, the Sun is a lot bigger. Our daytime star’s diameter is approximately 400 times larger than that of the Moon. What a coincidence that it also lies roughly 400 times farther away. This means both disks appear to be the same size.
21
This will be the first total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. in 38 years. The last one occurred February 26, 1979. It has been coined the “Great American Eclipse” because totality crosses only through the US, no other country. The next Total Solar Eclipse that will hit US soil will be in 2024 and will cross over Mexico, US, and Canada (See back cover).
Maximum Totality is not possible... ...In 2017 at least. The longest possible duration of the total phase of a solar eclipse is 7 minutes and 32 seconds. Unfortunately, the next solar eclipse whose totality approaches 7 minutes won’t occur until June 13, 2132. Its 6 minutes and 55 seconds of totality will be the longest since the 7 minutes and 4 seconds of totality June 30, 1973.
Samtec Eclipse Coverage Columbia, SC 100% 2min 36sec

Scottsburg 97.7
New Albany 95.8%

Erie Eclipse totalities are different lengths. The reason the total phases of solar eclipses vary in time is because Earth is not always at the same distance from the Sun and the Moon is not always the same distance from Earth. The Earth-Sun distance varies by 3 percent and the Moon-Earth distance by 12 percent. The result is that the Moon’s apparent diameter can range from 7 percent larger to 10 percent smaller than the Sun.

Red Lines are for a Total Eclipse meaning the sun will be completely covered by the moon. Yellow Lines are for an Annular Eclipse meaning the moon will travel in front of the sun but the sun will remain visible creating a bright ring around the moon.
