NEW ALBANY REMODEL PHASE 1

Phils Grill with new restrooms and mother rooms to the left

The New Albany Headquarters’ remodel is in full swing. The 18 month project officially began in early September with what will soon be the new break area and first floor office space. Once the construction walls were built, the jackhammering started almost immediately. New drain lines, electrical runs and data runs will be installed to increase the number of restrooms. They will also service the break area that will be nearly 75% larger than the one we have today. The new Phil’s Grill is framed and plumbed, and we have a brand new stage area for company meetings. This larger stage will also be home to a series of television screens that will measure 12 feet wide and nearly 9 feet high. The first of two doors to a new courtyard have been punched in the side of the building, with the second going in this spring. In the first floor office area, new bathrooms have been roughed in, as well as data closets,

and a new room that will replace the old “Big T” Training room. Windows are being replaced, and the exterior walls have been placed. In the coming months, we’ll be adding several large steel beams throughout the building to support the new HVAC systems required to keep our building nice and warm or nice and cool depending on the season. Phase 1 will end this coming spring when nearly half of the office Associates will move to their new home on the first floor. Phase 2 will begin immediately with the remodel of the brand new lobby and the remaining 15% of the new break room. We’ve still got a long way to go, but already everyone’s patience, flexibility, and understanding have been paramount to the project moving forward so smoothly. Stay tuned for updates in the next issue!

The company meeting stage will have a wall of flat screen TVs. There will also be a fully functioning AV control room behind the stage

Upcoming

Samtec Cares Events Nov. 20 - Dress for Success Dec. 4 - Blood Drive Christmas Caroling (See p.30) TBA - Toys for Tots TBA - Canned Food Drive TBA - Makenzie’s Coat Closet

The American Heart Association (AHA) is a non-profit organization in the United States that fosters appropriate cardiac care in an effort to reduce disability and deaths caused by cardiovascular disease and stroke. This year, Samtec raised over $3,000 for the AHA. Willie Lozado, who works in Training and Internal Communications in NA, and his family have been involved with the American Heart Association since 2007. On June 5th 2003, Willie’s life changed forever when his brother Dennis suffered a massive heart attack and passed away. Dennis’ death ended up saving Willie’s life as he educated himself about the symptoms of a heart attack. Five years later, that education paid off as Willie noticed that he was showing symptoms of a heart attack. He went to the hospital and ended up having surgery two days later on April 27, 2007. Unfortunately, Willie also lost his brother-in-law David Meredith on August 14, 2015 from a massive heart attack. This year, survivors Willie Lozado and Perry Edwards walked with their families and other Samtec Associates to raise awareness.

NEW ESG LAB

The new ESG lab has an open floor plan, improved equipment layout and LED lighting

“I want both internal and external customers to have a good impression when they leave our lab. I want our lab to be the Gold Standard.” - Eric Mings Samtec NA first started the Engineering Support Group (ESG) Lab in 2000. In 2008, we added an ESG Lab in Samtec HZ to support products being developed in Asia. The ESG Lab is made up of two divisions: Non-Released (NR) Inspection and Test Lab. NR Inspection’s duties are to perform dimensional verification on components and assemblies for new products being developed. Inspection times can vary greatly based on the type of inspection being performed and the complexity of the part being inspected. The Test Lab’s primary goal is to perform qualification and customer testing via various forms of electrical, mechanical, optical and/or accelerated aging tests. Various combinations of these tests can take anywhere from a few hours to complete all the way up to five-six weeks.

purchase a new MFG chamber, so parts no longer have to be shipped out to be tested. MFG testing is another form of accelerated aging where parts are exposed to various concentration levels of atmospheric gases. Many Samtec customers such as Cisco, Ciena and JDSU require MFG data in order to purchase our products. Fourteen days of MFG exposure is equivalent to over ten years of use in the field. Eric explained, “The way we test our products is usually much harsher than most connectors will ever experience in real world application.”

Mixed Flowing Gas (MFG) testing is one of the few tests Samtec outsourced, until now. Samtec NA recently ESG instillation worker and Eric Mings

MIS/TRAFFIC PROJECT

The Logistics Team is currently working on a large scale project to upgrade our global shipping and compliance systems. The goal of the project is to implement systems that will give us flexibility to better meet our customers’ expectations as we grow, provide us with tools to more efficiently manage our global supply chain and maximize Samtec’s trade compliance with U.S. Customs and other government agencies. The Logistics Team spent a significant amount of time analyzing and evaluating dozens of potential vendors who provide software packages for Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and Global Trade Management (GTM). Through rigorous evaluations and negotiations, two vendors were finally selected. Precision was selected to provide the software for our global shipping operations (TMS). Some of their customers include Belkin Ltd, GE Security, Jabil AMS and 3M. QuestaWeb was selected to provide the software for our global customs compliance (GTM). Some of their customers include Yamaha, Toshiba and Browning Inc.

9

Implementing and integrating these two systems with our own internal systems is not going to be an easy undertaking. Samtec does a lot of unique things to service our customers. This makes the task of integrating outside software packages with our own home-grown systems quite the challenge. When it is done, the new Global Logistics System will be a single shipping solution for all of our shipping and compliance needs that is scalable for future growth and is standardized across all Samtec locations. It will also be flexible enough to best meet the needs of each location. The Logistics Development Team established a project room on the second floor of the Molding building. This serves as their base of operations where they can coordinate activities with the software vendors as well as do design and planning work for the systems that need to be upgraded and integrated. With a focus on user centered design, they have leveraged multiple methods

and techniques to lay out the business goals and associate needs. Participants in the project engaged in a process called story mapping where they basically use an entire wall to “map out the processes from order entry all the way through final shipping and end of the day manifests. Story mapping is a practice that is intended to provide a more structured approach to release planning. It allows the team to visually layout the project from beginning to end versus writing a lengthy requirements document. The team also completed a research study on potential new hardware scanning equipment for the Staging and Picking area. By spending time with Associates in this area, the team was able to better understand what they need to more efficiently and effectively do their job. Exciting new devices that allow for hands-free work as well as mobile computers with built-in scanners are being investigated. As the team begins their development work, they will continue to involve those Associates who will use the product throughout the development process. Project implementation timelines and integration teams are still being finalized. The timeline for implementation will be aggressive given the numerous benefits that will come from using these two new software packages. More updates to come as the project progresses!

ENGINEERING FORUM

Welcome dinner at Buckheads on the river.

In August of this year, Samtec held its second Engineering Forum at our New Albany headquarters. Over 50 technical Associates from around the world spent the week networking and information sharing on product development, R&D efforts and procedures.

Ray Lee, Joe Smallwood, David Bennett, Tiger Wang, Jeff Lapp

Since this forum only takes place every two years, we found that many Associates have worked together, yet have not met in person. With Associates attending the forum coming from Product Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Process Engineering, Signal Integrity Engineering and Teraspeed Consulting, networking was key to this event. Collaboration and finding synergy in engineering efforts around the globe was the theme for this years’ forum. The need for this type of event was very evident in the number of breakout sessions and impromptu meetings that were held throughout the week. Samtec continues to push the envelope with Silicon-toSilicon solutions. Seeing the diverse group of talent that Samtec has assembled during the Engineering Forum, we are well positioned to serve our customers with cutting edge interconnects, IC packaging, optics, and design services.

RIDDLE FOODS

Jon Riddle is a business systems and data analyst at Samtec New Albany. The inspiration and planning of Riddle Foods dates back to 1994 when Jon Riddle and Shawn O’Brien were roommates in college at a small, private university in central Kentucky. With little to do in a small town in the evenings and weekends, Shawn and Jon entertained college friends and regularly served buffalo wings using a homemade buffalo sauce. The sauce was perfected over the years and was later labeled “Shawn & Jon’s Original Buffalo Sauce”. While never officially bottled or sold, countless batches of the sauce were made and shared with friends and family between 1994 and 2014. The initial launch of Riddle Foods in 2014 included five cases of five different sauces – Shawn & Jon’s Original Buffalo Sauce, Shawn & Jon’s Cilantro Lime Buffalo Sauce, Southern Cross Memphis Barbecue Sauce, Southern Cross Carolina Barbecue Sauce and Southern Cross Alabama Barbecue Sauce. These twenty-five cases were handmade and bottled in a small commercial kitchen. They were sold out in a little less than two weeks. It was painfully obvious that handmade batches was not going to keep up with demand. For the next several months, many different companies were contacted in an effort to find someone to take over the manufacturing. Once a suitable partner was identified, the research and development of the original three Southern Cross barbecue sauces began. There were many trial runs of each of the three sauces until both the flavor and texture

13

profile matched perfectly with the handmade batches. · Southern Cross Carolina Barbecue Sauce is a mustard based barbecue sauce popular in the Carolinas and the surrounding East coast states. It pairs perfectly with pork, beef and chicken. · Southern Cross Memphis Barbecue Sauce more closely resembles the barbecue sauces found in the Midwest. It is a tangy, sweet and slightly spicy barbecue sauce that pairs wonderfully with just about any type of meat. · Southern Cross Alabama Barbecue Sauce is probably the most unusual barbecue sauce of the lineup. It is a mayonnaise based barbecue sauce that goes wonderfully with chicken and seafood. Research and development is now underway for Shawn & Jon’s Original Buffalo Sauce, Shawn & Jon’s Cilantro Lime Buffalo Sauce, Southern Cross Kentucky Bourbon Barbecue Sauce, Southern Cross Kansas City Barbecue Sauce, Southern Cross Dry Rub and Southern Cross Coffee Dry Rub. Southern Cross Memphis, Carolina and Alabama Barbecue Sauces are now available online at www.RiddleFoods.com (and also at Jon Riddle’s desk at Samtec New Albany). Efforts are also underway to get the sauces carried in local groceries, liquor stores and specialty shops. Check the website for announcements of retail launches as well as for recipes using all of the sauces.

FIRST GRADUATE APPRENTICE

Brian Fields presents Nick’s certificate

On June 19th 2015, Nick Pierson became Samtec’s first graduate of the Tool and Die Maker Apprenticeship Program approved by the United States Department of Labor’s National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA). Brian Fields presented Nick with his official certificate at a celebration lunch held in the Samtec training room September 19, 2015. Nick started his career at Samtec NA in Stamping in March of 2010 as a machine operator. In an effort to improve his personal growth, Nick began taking night classes at the Kentuckiana Machining Association (KMA) School focusing on Machine Tool Technology. This was a four year course that Nick completed in three years. As a result of his performance as an operator and his outstanding progress in school, Nick was accepted to the apprenticeship program in 2011. One of Nick’s favorite tasks, die disassembly

The apprenticeship program consists of four years of schooling along with four years of on-the-job training with a journeyman toolmaker on various skill sets. The apprentice must complete a total of 8,000 hours of training in various disciplines such as Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM), milling, jig boring, grinding, lathe work, bench work, inspection and Solidworks. Throughout his apprenticeship, Nick maintained his outstanding performance and has truly demonstrated the Samtec culture, always ready to go the extra mile to help someone with no job being too small. The Apprenticeship Program is a win-win for both Samtec and our apprentice Associates. The program provides Samtec the tools needed to develop a highly skilled work force, and it offers apprentices the opportunity to earn a salary while learning these skills that are necessary to succeed in today’s high-demand technical careers.

THE LONGEST NORTH AMERICAN TRIATHLON

John Tucker training one week before the race

John Tucker, a Tooling Engineer at Samtec Cable in Wilsonville, Oregon, participated in his first Ironman on August 30, 2015. John participated in the longest running North American full length triathlon, the Challenge Penticton held in British Columbia, Canada. The race consisted of 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of biking and 26.2 miles of running. A total of 1,100 professional and amateur athletes toed the event’s start line. Athletes from across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific participated in the event which also included a Half Ironman and relay events over both distances. John trained for this race for about a year, but has been participating in endurance sports for 2 ½ years. He finished the race in 13:26:90 with an impressive 2nd place in his age group in the bike portion and 3rd place in his age group in the swimming event.

John Tucker riding on competition day

John explained, “The first Ironman seems to be a learning experience for everyone. I am very fortunate to work at Samtec. During a long day racing, it is an incredible boost to know that there are people supporting you who believe in you more consistently than you believe in yourself. It would have been much more difficult, if not impossible, to do this alone. My first Ironman is something that I will cherish forever, and the people who helped make it happen hold a special place in my heart.” John’s 3rd place trophy

HALLOWEEN FESTIVITIES

Pumpkin Chunking Contest During this year’s Harvest Homecoming, (a New Albany fall fair event), Samtec participated in the Purdue Polytechnic Pumpkin Chunking competition. The Samtec team was the only corporate team to compete. Up against the Purdue faculty and veteran teams, the Samtec rookie team was able to successfully fire their 15 pound pumpkins towards the target for each of the three competition launches plus an additional fun launch. There was even a final farewell launch at Samtec the next day. Although the Samtec team did not place in the top third, all the other teams and event staff were very happy to have a local company join in the “fun”. A lot of build, modification and test hours went into the “fun”. The Samtec team worked after normal hours over a 2-3 week period to build the side-arm style trebuchet. The total weight dropped was over 1,000 pounds, so the tower to support that weight was not an easy build. A huge thanks to Jed Wilder, Andrew Collingwood, Derek Bernardi, Tori Meek, Liam Parkes, Bryan Ray and John Riley for their hard work and time finishing the build as well as participating in the event.

What is Halloween? Halloween, or All Hallows’ Eve, is a celebration evolved from an ancient Celtic holiday that marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. It is celebrated on October 31 in the United States, England, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Scotland. Halloween activities occur throughout the month of October and include attending costume parties by dressing up as your favorite character, decorating and carving pumpkins, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, going to haunted houses, telling scary stories or watching horror movies. On Halloween night, trick-or-treating is a customary celebration for kids. Children go in costume from house-to house and receive treats (mostly candy).

CO-OP OUTING

New Albany Co-ops carve pumpkins at their October co-op event

The Co-op Program at Samtec has been in place for 20 years, starting with our first co-ops, Keith Guetig and Josh Ferry in Mechanical Engineering. Since then, the program has grown to exist in many different departments within Samtec. Our Co-op Program allows students to combine on-the-job training with classroom learning. The students may receive credit toward their degree for completing a co-op by either working part time while they are going to class full time, or by rotating each semester between being a full time employee and a full time student. Depending on whether the student is from a local or non-local school, their time with Samtec could range anywhere from three

semesters to two years. Monthly co-op events create a sense of community among the students. These events take place either at lunch or after work depending on the activity. Since many times co-ops do not know the other students outside of their department or school, these events are a fun way for them to get to know each other and share ideas, experiences and best practices from their time at Samtec. Events include team-building activities, past coops speaking on their experience, networking activities or a little friendly competition. The co-op event this October was pumpkin carving as you can see in the photos above and below!

ADOBE MAX CONFERENCE

Samtec Associates draw the Samtec logo on the signature wall. Can you find it?

A group of graphic designers went to the Adobe Max conference in October. Adobe is the creator of the major tools Samtec designers around the world use. The conference focused on upcoming features Adobe is adding to their products, as well as expanding creative thinking and problem solving. It is critical for our designers to keep up-to-date with the latest design techniques and trends, discover new ideas and find innovative ways to keep the Samtec brand relevant in today’s culture. Billed as “The Creativity Conference”, attending this conference is a huge step in achieving that goal! Speakers show off new apps and tools and show how to use them

FRANCE CUSTOMER DEMONSTRATIONS

Since the Silicon Valley in California is headquarters to hundreds of global technology companies, a lot of our customers are located there. Having so many customers in close proximity to each other makes it easier to quickly communicate with them in person. This is not the case in France as they do not have an equivalent to Silicon Valley. All the large technology companies are spread out all over France, and it would take weeks to talk to all of them. Therefore, our FSE in Southern France, Jean-Pierre Da Cunha, organized multiple Customer Events and invited customers to attend a one day learning session. Brian Vicich (Engineering Manager - Samtec NA) led the training sessions and educated our customers about our new technologies and products. Each Customer Event is about 5 hours long and between 25-50 engineers and project managers attend. Some of the major customers that attended were IBM, ST MicroElectronics, THALES Group, Continental Automotive, Rockwell, Technofan (Safran Group), Kontron, Schneider, along with many more!

Shanghai, China

Shanghai is celebrating its 16th year! The facility opened in the year 1999. Many of the original Associates are still there today!

Singapore

India

Samtec India Associates sit down and teach Matt Baumann (NA) to play a famous Indian board game called Carrom Board. It is has similar traits to billiards and table shuffleboard.

Malaysia

Each August 31st is Malaysia Independence Day or Hari Merdeka. It is a national day of Malaysia that commemorates the independence of the Federation of Malay from British colonial rule in 1957!

The culture of Singapore is a combination of Asian and European cultures. As a multi-ethnic country who celebrates Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian festive occasions, it has been dubbed as a country where “East meets West. The major public holidays reflect the racial diversity, and celebrations include the lighting of an area like Chinatown for Chinese New Year, Geylang Serai for Hari Raya Puasa, Serangoon Road for Deepavali and Orchard Road for Christmas. November 10th is Deepavali, and this picture is of the decoration on Serangoon Road. Singapore history dates back to the third century, but it became an independent country in 1965. Happy 50th Birthday, Singapore!

Did You Know? All about Meetings As Samtec continues to grow, it seems like the number of meetings we have grows as well. Meetings are a necessary evil, so let’s try and make the most of our time spent conducting or attending them to be as beneficial as possible with the meeting guidelines and tips below.

Cell Phones and Laptops. Turn off your cell phone prior to the start of the meeting. If you are expecting an urgent call, then set your phone to vibrate and excuse yourself from the meeting if the call comes in. Check the screen of your laptop to make sure you do not obstruct anyone’s view.

Reserve A Conference Room. Make sure you reserve a conference room in advance for those rooms found in Outlook. Be mindful when your meeting time is up for groups that have reserved the room after you. Try to match the room size with the number of participants and the electronics needed for the meeting.

Understand the Unwritten Speaking Rules. It’s not polite to interrupt others, but in some meetings, you have to interrupt at some point or you won’t be heard. Understand the rules so that you can have a productive meeting. Speak loudly enough so that everyone hears what you’re saying. Speaking softly is a subtle nonverbal action that can affect your professionalism.

Be On Time and Prepared. Make sure you come on time and are prepared. Don’t waste other’s time by not being punctual or not being ready to discuss the topic at hand.

Drinking and Eating in a Meeting. Bringing drinks to a meeting is acceptable, but if you’re going to eat in a meeting, it needs to be OK with the entire group. Food noises and smells can be disruptive. Interact During the Meeting.

Guests. If you bring a guest to a meeting it is considerate to give the meeting organizer advanced notice if at all possible. Make Introductions. Ask at the start of the meeting if everyone knows each other and make introductions as needed. Have a Strong Agenda. The meeting organizer should have a good, strong agenda and stay on track. Try to table off-subject topics to the end of the meeting or set up a new meeting. Listen. You may find that many of the questions you have about a topic are answered by the content of the meeting. Listen attentively to the meeting and take notes. Be mindful of your body language so you are an engaged and active listener.

29

Keep Judgments at a Minimum (if at all). Be respectful of others. You may disagree with how another person handles a specific situation given everyone’s different perspective, but do so respectfully. Recognize that everyone is trying their best, and it’s not your duty to judge others based on what you feel is right. You are only responsible for yourself. One of the most important parts of modern-day etiquette is to allow everyone the right to voice their own opinion. Clean Up. Clean up after yourself and leave things the way you found them. Push in chairs and turn off lights before you leave the room.
