A NOTE FROM DEAN
In the last newsletter, we talked about high-level “areas of focus” (AOF). As we are all aware, evolution and change are constants at Samtec, Similarly, our use of the AOF process has evolved as well to what we refer to as “Top 3” (T3). T3 is basically a “sprint list” of the Top 3 initiatives or actions an area/department want to accomplish over a 60 day period. Our T3 sprints run in calendar months (ex. Jan-Feb, Mar-Apr, May-Jun, etc.), so three sprints complete a six month cycle. At the end of each sprint period, group managers update their progress and post the next T3 goals for their area. Currently, we use 15 core areas/departments which report T3 goals. One of the main drivers of changing from a six month AOF to a 60 day T3 is the speed that things change, not only within Samtec, but also within our industry. As the pace of change quickens, it makes our industry increasingly complex as well. To succeed and differentiate in this competitive environment, we need to be focused, agile, and synchronized globally. An added benefit of moving to T3 is it increases the opportunity for innovation, and innovation often leads to differentiation. Innovation can’t be “scheduled” or put into a work instruction. It often happens naturally when people working on like initiatives connect the dots crossfunctionally, and T3 sprints increase the likelihood for innovation to occur without losing speed on key initiatives.
3
Earlier I mentioned to succeed and differentiate today, Samtec must be focused, agile, and synchronized. Specific to Operations, what does that mean? If we rollback time to two years ago, we began efforts to get Operations “organized”. This isn’t to say we weren’t organized before, just that we started to address road blocks that were preventing us from being more Optimized, Profitable, and Scalable. This involved implementing things like Flow, Lean, and Batching just to name a few. We then evolved our focus to make Operations more,“optimized”. Optimization efforts included High Speed/OMM Automation, Global Footprint/Factory locations, and Cross-training. After building on both “organize and optimize” initiatives, we now turn our focus to be ‘synchronized’ among the global Operations locations. Three key initiatives that fall under the synchronized theme are Dynamic Routings, Roadmap, and Supply Chain. You’ll hear more about these initiatives in the days and weeks to come via T3 announcements and the next company meeting. 2015 is certainly off to a great start. Together, we continue moving Samtec forward with innovative products such as FireFly™ and Z-RAY®, best in class support services like Teraspeed Consulting® and our Signal Integrity Group, an industry leading global infrastructure that’s precise, efficient, and lean … and absolutely the best people in the business. Thanks for all you do every day to make Samtec a great company. -Dean Hohl

MIS ROLLS OUT NEW UCD PROCESS
Brad Johnson
IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU UCD stands for User Centered Design, so it’s all about you – the user. It’s a design philosophy that MIS has adopted to understand who, why and how Samtec applications will be used on a daily basis. It is an organized way to have more efficient discussions and develop a shared understanding of the project’s goals. Many large organizations such as Google, Facebook and Amazon already use the UCD process to make their software products more engaging, increase usability or streamline the interface. The UCD Process can be broken down into four main phases of the software development cycle: Research, Design, Prototyping and Testing. This cycle helps enforce user feedback and keep the big picture in front of team members throughout development. Fortunately for those in MIS, UCD fits nicely into their existing Agile development process. For those of you outside of MIS, the process involves you, the user, providing feedback in multiple ways: completing surveys, attending focus groups and doing usability testing on prototypes. This research and testing is conducted to verify that requirements are met and the application works as we expect it to.
11
You’ll be interested to know that we are already implementing the UCD process on the PCMAN Sunset Project for Accounts Receivable. To provide you a glimpse into the process, we first kicked off the project a few months ago and immediately started interviewing Associates (also known as shadowing) to understand how they do their work. We then invited Associates involved with the project to a Story Mapping session in which we recorded all of the user stories (project requirements) and ordered them by priority. This is a useful tool for everyone involved to understand the big picture. We also held a design sketch session with the developers to get the team more involved on how to structure the application to solve already identified problems such as editing an invoice. These sketches will serve as a framework for further designs used in mockups and prototypes. This is just the start of UCD in MIS, and there is much more that can be discussed about the process. We are planning on rolling out UCD across all the MIS teams in New Albany, Costa Rica and China. Our goal is to achieve a consistent user experience across all of our MIS applications that provides you, the user, with a memorable experience.

KUDOS TO TRAFFIC! With all the talk of the remodel lately (new break areas, rumors and jokes about nap pods and moving sidewalks), we often forget to mention all the behind the scenes work that will go into making our new worldwide corporate headquarters a reality. The most common question we get about the remodel is “when will it start?” The answer to that is in a lot of ways, it has already started. The remodel is going to be a marathon not a sprint! For the past 6 months, we’ve seen countless ways Associates from across the organization are staying flexible and being creative to make sure when it is all said and done, we have the best home possible. One particular Department that has really stepped up is Traffic. We owe the folks within Traffic a huge THANK YOU for what they have been able to accomplish so far.
Jim Bauer
You may have noticed the old Traffic area has been cleared out. Not only does this allow for the new lobby and for much-needed office space to be increased, but it also aligns nicely with LEAN initiatives. So, where did Traffic go? Traffic has moved to and been integrated within the Inventory Department. The move has had its fair share of challenges, but with incredible teamwork, things are getting better and more efficient every day. The Traffic Department has definitely embodied the word “flexible” by squeezing into a much smaller space then they are used to. While this new layout will take some getting used to, some efficiencies are already being seen. We’re using denser shelving units, reducing the number of workstations required, and we have less boxes “just sitting”. The new floor plan has also created a need for more experimentation in the day-to-day operations of the Department. For example, we’re using less belts to move packages, and Associates are volunteering to share more responsibilities. We’re also using newer workstations and laying them out more efficiently. We have boxes that are used “Just in Time” and flat panel monitors that are mounted to the workstations that look better, save space, and reflect our high-tech focus.
Jennifer Sehook
All of these things would not have been possible if it weren’t for the creativity and willingness to help out from the Traffic team. Samtec knows that change can be hard and that we’ve still got some kinks to work out, but if you see a Traffic Associate, take the time to thank them for embodying our Sudden Service principles. If everyone can be the teamplayer the Associates in Traffic have been, who knows what kind of innovations and improvements we will see come out of each stage of the remodel.

OPENING NEW DOORS
Jasmin Broughton, Mary Wright, Melissa Main, Tawnya Lynch, Lori Carpenter
About 25 Associates moved from Speedflex 1 in Ramsey to Samtec NA between April and May 2014. Included in the moved were Jasmin Broughton (14 years), Tawnya Lynch (9 years), Mary Wright (8 years) and Lori Carpenter (15 years). Tawyna said from day one, they have felt like they were at home. On February 9th when we had over 8 inches of snow, Mary’s husband drove her, Jasmin and Tawnya from English to New Albany to work that day. That is about an hour drive – one way. Wherever our Associate live, they understand Samtec’s commitment to servicing our customers. Samtec is also fortunate to have the opportunity to open a new facility next to the Mid-America Science Park in Scottsburg, IN. The workforce training capabilities and global communications amenities are phenomena there,

so as we continue to grow and offer our customers the best in quality and service, partners like MASPark are essential. In order to better streamline manufacturing operations in Southern Indiana, we are consolidating and relocating the Speedflex 2 facility in Salem and Versatech in Crothersville to a new 70,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in the Certified Technology Park District. Our consolidation is the result of a collaborative effort by many organizations. “Samtec’s spirit of service and innovation, and focus on hiring the best talent, fits perfectly with our vision for the future of this community,” said Scottsburg Mayor Bill Graham. “They care about their people and the communities they live in, and so do we.” Here we grow again!
CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT Remember a couple of summers ago, August 6, 2012 to be exact, when the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) and its Curiosity Rover landed on Mars? You’ve probably seen pictures of the vehicle and images it has sent back showing the Martian surface. It was an eight month journey to Mars, and the last 10 minutes or so were nail-biters, at least for the folks at NASA. The landing craft had to transform a 3.7 miles per second descent to the surface of Mars (that would be about 12,900 miles per hour) into a very soft landing. And by the way, the landing craft weighed about one ton and was full of sensitive equipment. And just to make it a bit more complicated, there was a 14-minute communications lag between Mars and Earth, so Curiosity’s computer had to perform all of this on its own with no adjustments from Earth. One sensor system, designed and produced by our customer Honeywell, was crucial to safely landing the rover. The Descent Inertial Measurement Unit (DIMU) contains three gyros and three accelerometers. For more than half the landing, until about 2 minutes from touchdown, Curiosity flew blind, relying entirely on DIMU data to estimate the spacecraft’s position, orientation, and speed, and by extension, its likely altitude. Samtec FTS, CLP, and ASP products are used in this product, so we now have a few products on Mars.
Our customer, First Alert, is a recognizable name in the U.S. for home safety. Products include smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, fire extinguishes, safes, and security cameras, to name a few. A new product, the Onelink Wi-Fi Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide alarm, recently debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The concept won the show’s Envisioneering Innovation & Design Award. This system allows customers to remotely test the alarm or silence false alarms through an app on their phone, it remotely connects with other wireless alarms, and it provides visual status of how the alarm is functioning or if it needs maintenance. The product is not yet available, but it is already listed on Amazon; the price is $109.99. The system uses our CLP and FTSH Series. Below is a picture of the unit and the app on a smartphone.

ASSOCIATE SPOTLIGHT
Kara Fraley I LOVE DOGS! If you have talked with Kara Fraley, you know this isn’t just a bumper sticker. She is extremely passionate about dogs. Kara has worked at Samtec for nine years in our Traffic Department. She is married to Daniel Fraley in our ASP Department, and they have three boys, one girl. Kara has always loved dogs, but she didn’t realize there were local organizations available for volunteers until her friend told her about Southern Indiana Animal Rescue. Southern Indiana Animal Rescue (SIAR) is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to saving companion animals whose lives are in jeopardy. They do not have a shelter, so all their pets live in volunteers’ homes until their forever home is found. In the two years since Kara has volunteered with SIAR, there hasn’t been a time where she hasn’t fostered at least one dog. She knows she can’t save them all, but Kara estimates that about 80 dogs have come through her and Daniel’s house via the foster program. They currently have nine

dogs: four of their own and five fosters. The most dogs she has fostered at any one time was 15 including a liter of 8 puppies. Now that’s true doggie love! Kara says the toughest thing about fostering dogs is seeing the situations that some of them have been rescued from. Kara has fostered dogs that have been hit by a car, shot, found in a creek, etc. Dogs with special needs like this are very hard to place. Because of that, sometimes Kara is a Foster Fail. Instead of just fostering the dog, she keeps it. She has done this three different times as she has become so attached to them – and they to her. Thankfully, Daniel is very understanding about Kara’s love of dogs! If you are interested in fostering or adopting an animal, SIAR is at the PetSmart in Clarksville every Saturday. When she’s not at a kids’ game or function, you’ll probably see Kara there too. Of course, the organization could always use items like collars, leashes, toys, beds, etc or monetary donations. All dollars received by SIAR are used to cover the cost of actual expenses including spay/neuter, microchipping, worming, flea/tick control, and any other health condition a pet may have upon coming into their rescue. For more information or to make a donation, go to http://www.sirescue.org.
Ed Messer Ed Messer is an Operations Manager and has worked at Samtec since 1997. Ed and his family have literally traveled the world for Samtec. Costa Rica In 2005, Samtec realized that although the manufacturing facility in China provided a low cost work center, the time difference and travel logistics made it very difficult for product, manufacturing, tooling and support. We needed to find a manufacturing facility that would be a lower cost work center than in the US, but it needed to be in the same hemisphere. We decided upon manufacturing in Costa Rica as it was in the same timezone, the language barrier was minimal, and there was high education level within the work force. In order to make this new Central American facility a long term success, it became evident that we needed a Samtec Associate there on a daily basis for a substantial period of time to transfer first hand Samtec knowledge, experience and culture. Even though Ed and his wife Angie had two small kids at the time, they took that challenge, and a leap of faith, and moved overseas for what they thought was a once in a lifetime opportunity for their family. Panama Then the once in a lifetime opportunity became twice in a lifetime when Samtec decided to open another manufacturing
facility in Central America. Ed, and his family, never dreamed that they would move again after Costa Rica, but when Samtec needed someone, Ed decided to embark on yet another move abroad – this time to Panama. Penang, Malaysia As the old adage says, things happen in threes! Samtec decided to expand manufacturing in Malaysia and open a new facility in Penang. With increasing sales, Penang’s manufacturing hours needed to ramp from 5K to 45K. Richard Kennedy, Joel Kneith, Samtec Singapore and Samtec JB worked hard together on this project. However, there was once again a need to have a Samtec Associate there on-site to help reinforce the Samtec business model and culture. Ed said that the decision to move his family to Penang was by far a harder decision than it was the previous two times, but Ed and Angie felt it was important to give their kids the opportunity to see life in a whole new way. So they took an even bigger leap of faith and made the decision to move to Malaysia. Even though he learned so much from each of his trips, Ed admitted at times it was very hard on his family living overseas. However, his family shared experiences with each opportunity that they never could have dreamed of. He, and his family, took a big risk with each move, but the rewards were huge: memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

GLOBAL OUTREACH
For the Second year in a row, Avnet Abacus, one of Samtec’s distributors Denmark, participated in an event for the benefit of children with cancer. It was a 3 hour spinning event, and the Avnet Abacus team manned 10 bikes. A total of 15 Avnet Abacus employees rode bikes for 1, 2 or some even the full 3 hours. There were a total of 100 bikes were spinning during the event with three inspiring instructors who managed to make all participants give “a little more”. At the end of the 3 hour ride, the results of all the cyclists sweat paid off with over $12,000 donated for the foundation “Children with Cancer” Team-Rynkeby, a Nordic charity cycling team with more 1,450 members, sponsored this great event. Last year, Team-Rynekby raised nearly $2.2 million for Children with Cancer. And the Avnet Abacus team is ready to participate again in this worthy cause saying, “We’ll be back next year with more bikes and more hours”. Samtec hearts are big all over the globe!

RECIPES
Nancy Schellenberger has worked at Samtec for 32 years. She is currently a Product Owner for the Inventory Suite system. She enjoys spending time outdoors, especially with her grandsons, and cooking. Here is one of her favorite recipes:
Ingredients: 4 Fresh Chicken breasts (flattened) ½ lb Virginia Ham sliced thin ½ lb Swiss Cheese 1 cup Italian Bread crumbs 1-2 eggs 1 cup parmesan cheese.
CHICKEN CORDON BLUE Place raw chicken breast smooth side up one at a time between two sheets of waxed paper or plastic wrap. Use a small pan, rolling pin or flat item to pound chicken until is spreads out and is about ½ inch thick. Place ham slice(s) on top of the chicken breast laying flat. Fold swiss cheese to form a long rectangular shape about 1 inch in diameter. Making sure the length is at least 1 inch from the edge of the chicken. Roll the swiss cheese in the ham like you would a burrito. Folding the sides over before rolling. This seals the cheese inside the ham. Now roll the ham roll inside the chicken following the same process. Mix the bread crumbs and parmesan together on a plate. Beat egg in shallow bowl large enough to lay the rolled up chicken in it. Dip the chicken roll in the egg covering all sides. Roll the chicken roll in the bread crumb/parmesan mixture. Lay on a baking sheet making sure the open end is down. Bake at 375 for 20-25 minutes. (Chicken roll should be firm to the touch and golden brown).

Keith Baumman feeding Goose Willis
Fly Away, Fly Away Home Spring is in the air! That means spring has sprung around the Five Lakes area behind Samtec New Albany. Ok, ok, so maybe “lake” is a strong word, but what might not look like much to us is equivalent to the Taj Majal to our feathered friends that head this way each year. That’s right – our fabulous Canadian Geese we all know and love so well. And we’ve just got word that Keith Baumman is more excited than ever to get a head start on preparing things for them. We caught up with him to see what he had in mind for this year.
this point, Keith demonstrated what a male goose does when he protects his nest. Keith crouched low and flapped his arms as a goose would and started hissing. “Hissssss Hissssss.” We neared the end of our walk about the Lakes, and Keith stopped to feed his fine feathered friends some gourmet popcorn he had popped just for them. “They can’t get enough of this stuff. A little fancy for my taste, but boy the geese like it!” Keith said. Keith did leave us with these words of advice: “The geese really only like me, so everybody else should avoid them at all costs.”
“Well, you know what they say…” Keith began, “geese really are man’s best friend.” Keith was peacefully raking some leaves into a pile as we spoke. “See the thing is,” he continued, “a goose really likes their nests to be fluffed each morning. So I personally come out here and lay some fresh leaves on each nest I find.” As we walked around the Lakes, Keith pointed out his favorite goose couples. He’s even named them after famous power couples. There’s two geese named Kayne and Kim, two named Bonnie and Clyde, and Keith’s personal favorite goose couple so far, a pair of geese named Sam and Betty. “They really do become family” he said. “Sure they can get a little territorial, but who doesn’t? When they start getting hissy, the best thing to do is to move away. Don’t cower in fear, but move briskly away from them.” At
