A VISIT FROM INDIANA UNIVERSITY IU President Michael McRobbie stopped at Samtec on Wednesday, March 23 while he was in town to visit IU Southeast as part of his recent journey through the Hoosier state. McRobbie, who has been visiting regional IU campuses for his “McRobbie on the Move” tour said the tour’s goal is to demonstrate IU’s commitment to and importance of the regional campuses. As part of his visit, McRobbie and IUS Chancellor Ray Wallace talked with local media about IU Southeast and its connection to the Southern Indiana region. “The scale of enterprise going on in this region is pretty impressive,” McRobbie said. His tour of Samtec was part of an effort by McRobbie and IU to also reach out to the local employers of each regional campus. Chancellor Wallace said since the majority of IUS interns are hired by the companies at which they intern, this outreach fosters greater opportunities for students to land high-paying positions. McRobbie said 85 percent of IUS graduates ultimately stay and become employed in the region after graduating.

A DIFFERENT AVENUE The cubicles and conference rooms aren’t the only new features at headquarters in New Albany. Amid the shuffling of office supplies and stacks of card board boxes, Laura Bartlett sits in her new cubicle. It’s a stark contrast to the office she previously occupied on Frankfort Avenue. It was at the top of the stairs on the second floor with a window overlooking the restaurants and shops on the street below. But her new space is far from a downgrade. “This facility is state of the art. It’s a big change working in an industrial park, but I love being surrounded by people. I’m very happy with the move.” Laura was not always a Samtec Associate, but she has worked with Samtec for over 27 years. Laura began her relationship with Samtec when she was hired at Burch in 1989, several years after they became a key marketing partner with Samtec. Burch Associates’ was an independent Louisville advertising agency formed in 1969 by Dan Burch. Samtec and Burch first formed their partnership in 1981 when Burch developed the #181 Full Line Catalog. In 1988, the company was passed down to two of Dan’s sons, Mike and Joe. As Samtec grew, the workload for the agency steadily increased, specifically with advertising for international sales. In January 2014, the team at Burch became full time Samtec Associates.
Laura Bartlett working in her new cubicle at New Albany
Although Laura was an eye witness to the transformation of the Marketing Department, she admits that merging into the New Albany office has exposed her to a lot of new things. “I’ve been learning a lot. On Frankfort Avenue, we weren’t able to see how everything functions together. Now, I can sit in on meetings and walk right up to someone’s desk to communicate. Being together relieves so much stress.”

SAMTEC CARES - RAUCH, INC. & THE IMAGINE AWARDS Rauch was founded in 1953 by a dedicated group of parents. Starting in a church basement with a volunteer teacher, Rauch was the first school for children with developmental disabilities in the state of Indiana and the first entity in Southern Indiana to be funded by the WHAS Crusade for Children. Today, Rauch directly serves over 1,000 children, adults, and families in Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Scott, Washington, Jefferson, and Jackson Counties in Indiana as well as Jefferson and Oldham County in Kentucky. The Rauch Foundation was created in 1997 to establish both a culture and a vehicle for long-term funding at Rauch, Inc. One of their fundraising events is the Imagine Awards which debuted in 2001. The goal of these awards is to make a better community and world for people with disabilities ... “A Community Where Everyone Belongs.” Samtec is a proud sponsor of the Imagine Awards which were recently held at Horseshoe Southern Indiana in March, and a few Associates had the privilege to attend the 2016 event. This year, Rauch treated attendees to the amazing voice of season three The X-Factor finalist Rion Paige. Rion has a rare condition called arthrogryposis multiplex congenital which causes a curving of the joints. She has permanent damage to her arms resulting in her hands being in a fixed, bent position. Besides her phenomenal singing performance, Rion had crafted a message to complement the night telling her story of triumph over her life-long disability. All proceeds from the Imagine Awards event benefit the Rauch Foundation, and this year’s festivities raised an incredible $89,000 in net proceeds to support programs and services for people with disabilities in Southern Indiana and metro Louisville.

THE HIDDEN TALENTS OF GREG BOWMAN Greg Bowman has worked at Samtec Scottsburg for 6 years. He works 3rd shift in the multi-cut area. Greg loves 3rd shift, and that might just be because his wife, Krystal, also works 3rd shift at Samtec Scottsburg. Krystal has been with Samtec for over 10 years in QA. Growing up in the automotive industry as his Dad was a mechanic, it was already in Greg’s blood to customize and paint. A week before Christmas in 2015, Greg had an idea. Since both he and his wife hunt, Greg wanted to personalize their guns with a pattern. As with most people these days, Greg decided to turn to Google to search for ways to adhere patterns. Water-transfer printing, or hydro dipping, was one of the first results to pop up. A few YouTube videos later, Greg thought it looked like a neat and easy process, so he began to gather supplies. After he built his own 150 gallon water filter tank, Greg was ready to give water transfer printing a go. He then found that like a lot of things on the internet, it was “a lot more difficult than it looks online.” Pure dedication was what made Greg press through the early learning stages. His patience paid off, and Greg started successfully dipping gun parts, helmets, YETI and Tervis Cups, Xbox controllers, and much more. Most items need to be disassembled before they are dipped. Since everything reacts differently to the water-transfer print process, each product needs to be washed to remove any oils or dirt which could interfere with the paint / pattern adhering. The item must also be sanded and primed with either a dark or white base coat. Once this is done, the film, or pattern, is put in the water, the product is dipped in the water, and a final coat is applied. It is a very precise and tedious process taking about 2 to 3 days to complete one item. Currently, Greg prints items mostly for his family, but he also gets a lot of work from his fellow Samtec Associates. There are hundreds of different patterns to choose from, and Greg currently keeps about 32 patterns in stock right now. Greg really enjoys wrapping as a hobby. He likes it so much that he did the inside of his car in camo. For his next big project, Greg is planning on wrapping his motorcycle. If you interested in having something wrapped via water-transfer printing, Greg said to contact him on Facebook page. Just search:v GK custom coatings.

MARY MAKES THE PRODUCTS THAT SAVE HER LIFE Mary Gibson works in Automation and is a Supervisor (OSS) in Secondary Operations / Handfill. She has worked at Samtec for over 20 years. Six years ago, after experiencing fainting spells, Mary found out that she suffered from a heart condition. Her doctor said that due to this condition, she needed a pacemaker to continuously monitor her heart. If it detected a rhythm problem, her pacemaker would send out small, undetectable electrical signals to correct it and restore her heart to a more normal, steady rate. There are three parts of a pacemaker. The pulse generator is like the brain. It controls everything and is the part of the pacemaker that was implanted in Mary’s chest. The pacing lead electrodes stimulate the heart to beat. One lead was attached to the top of her heart, and the other to the bottom of her heart. The programmer unit receives the data from the pulse generator which enables the physician to evaluate the pacemaker’s performance and change settings. Before her surgery, the doctor brought in a pacemaker generator and programmer unit that goes with it. He took both apart to explain to Mary how the pacemaker worked. When he did, she noticed that some of the parts looked like Samtec connectors. When she looked more closely, Mary noticed the Samtec “S” on the bodies. Then she looked at the manufacturer of both units. It was Hospira, a Samtec customer located in IL. At that moment, Mary knew that Samtec parts were in both her pacemaker generator and the programmer unit as she had been one of many Associates who had been building custom CLMs and FTEs for years (and they were a “bear” to make). Very quickly, Mary realized that the quality of our parts can truly be the difference between life and death. Mary’s original Hospira programmer had to be plugged into her land line phone jack to retrieve the data from the pulse generator implanted in her chest. Her new programmer is a wireless, hand held device that uses an app on her smart phone to retrieve the information from her pacemaker generator. This battery operated unit is made for Hospira by Medtronic, a Samtec customer in MN. Once every three months, Mary uses the programmer to

monitor how her pacemaker is doing, if it is working at the correct pace, and to check the battery life of the generator unit. The programmer runs three tests (current data, data based on speeding her heart up and data based on slowing her heart down), determines what level to set her pacemaker on based on the results of these tests, and then sends the data directly to her doctor. The life expectancy of a pacemaker battery is between 5 and 15 years depending on how active the pacemaker is. Right now, Mary’s pacemaker is expected to last approximately 11 years, and then she will need to have surgery to replace it. Although Mary has no restrictions that prevent her activities by having a pacemaker, she carries a wallet Pacemaker ID card with her at all times with the serial number of her pacemaker. Equipment used by doctors, dentists, as well as the metal detector screening units in the airport, can affect her pacemaker.
Mary and her new Medtronic programmer. It slows down and speeds up her heart rate, then sends the data to her Medtronic app and her Doctor.
Having gone through this experience, Mary is very conscientious about the quality of every part that we make and understands the importance and consequences of even one bad part.

BEST PLACES TO WORK Every year, Fortune Magazine puts together their “Best Places to Work” edition. Alan Murray, Fortune’s editor, believes the chief quality their “Best Places to Work” lists illustrates is culture. Companies that have good ones make their list. Companies that don’t have good cultures don’t make the list. Fortune surveyed thousands of employees around the United States working in the manufacturing and production business sectors spanning food, textiles, and electronics, as well as the oil and gas industries. Rankings for this list were based solely on employee feedback, and Samtec is proud to be ranked 13th on Fortune Magazine’s Best Places to Work in Manufacturing and Production. The city of Scottsburg was so excited that Samtec made the Best Workplaces in Manufacturing and Product list that they recognized us with a billboard on I-65 at the Scottsburg exit … very close to our new building. Thanks to all Associates who took time to complete the survey!
15
If you want to see the full results, go to: http://fortune.com/2016/02/16/bestworkplaces-manufacturing-production/
“A company that treats the Associates with respect, trust, and understanding to the point of feeling like an owner in the company, as well as providing excellent pay, benefits, and a family environment is ingenious in my opinion. The result is a happy and harmonious working environment where the Associates actually WANT to come to work, and actually WANT to do a good job. If other companies had this same type of mindset and provided the same things… the result could be a better world and less unemployment. Samtec sticks to their guns on issues of morality and common core values… and only hires people who fit into that window. If you employ honest people who want to work and make an honest living, then the problems that most employers face daily become almost a non-issue.”

SAMTEC FIRST RESPONDERS Bryan Ray, David Decker, Dick Bowyer, Jeff Murphy, Mark Bobo, Mike Robins, Teresa Medley and Troy Cook are the Associates currently listed for Samtec, the State of Indiana and the Department of Homeland Security as Emergency Medical Responders (EMR). These Associates volunteered their time to attend an eight week course consisting of 7 hours each Saturday. At the end of the course, all of our Associates had to pass the state’s written test and a hands-on, skills proficiency test to be certified EMRs. Samtec’s EMRs are required to have over 20 hours of continuing education credit every two years to maintain their certification according to the State of Indiana. Education comes in various forms, such as CPR/ AED, Stroke / Heart Attacks, Seizures, Mental Awareness, Diabetic Emergencies and Open Wound Emergencies.
19
There are an additional 30+ other Associates throughout New Albany who are trained and/or certified for specialized emergencies such as CPR and AED. In the event of an emergency situation, there are necessary actions from all present in order to get the person the help they need in the best possible way. Once Samtec EMRs arrive on the scene, they are in charge. Please assist as needed per their request. Associates near the scene who are not involved in the process directly should leave the area in order to prevent possible risk exposure and/or disruption and delay of EMT personnel. Our first priority is getting the injured help as quickly as we can. If you are interested in becoming a Samtec First Responder or have additional questions, please contact Keith Baumann or Jeff Murphy.

SAMTEC HEADQUARTERS REMODEL
Brigid Morrissey looks at the Nook close up
On May 9th after a long nine months of construction, Samtec New Albany celebrated completion of the first phase in our building remodel. The first phase of the main building remodel includes the majority of the new break room and first floor office space for Marketing, Sales, MIS Help Desk, Customer Service, Pricing, Human Resources, Payroll, and Learning and Development. Our new break room is equipped with a brand new café area, a 15 foot by 10 foot video wall for company meetings, two new restrooms and two “Mother’s Rooms” so that nursing mothers have a private space. The first phase completion also marks the opening of our interactive “nook”. The nook is an area outside the break room that houses a 21 foot by 6 foot tall touch screen which allows both Associates and visitors to virtually explore our products, services, capabilities and history. This is an absolute “best in class” experience and a great way to kick off a tour.
21
Before nearly 150 people could make the move into their new space on the first floor, we had to clear out the old office area to ensure an on-time transition into Phase 2 of construction. To do this, four departments, MIS, Accounting, Operations and Purchasing, needed to vacate their old areas before their new areas upstairs were done. The solution was to move these departments into the building lovingly called “Kids World” (named after the daycare that previously occupied the building). The Samtec Facilities team was able to tool up the Kids World building in record time complete with paint, carpet and new bathrooms, while at the same time working weekends to complete the first phase of the first floor of the main building. A huge “thanks” goes out to all departments willing to take one for the team by calling Kids World home for the duration of phase two as well as to our global facilities and maintenance teams for all the long hours making things right in our new home.

SME SPARTANS Samtec Microelectronics recently sponsored a team for the Colorado Sprint Spartan Race in Ft. Carson, CO. The Spartan Race is an innovative obstacle course race created by Joe DeSena, a world-class adventure racer, and there are more than 130 of these races around the world annually. On the same fields that some of our nation’s finest have prepared for battle, over 6,000 participants competed at the Colorado Military Sprint the first of May at the Fort Carson Army Base. It is the only Spartan Race in the US that is hosted on a military base, and the obstacles were designed by the 4th Infantry and Special Forces units. A Spartan course is normally 10 miles riddled with signature obstacles like mud, barbed wire, walls, rope and fire. Given the venue, this race had a military twist including Special Ops variations where overcoming obstacles is part of their job to fight for our freedom. Even though only one SME Associate had ever ran a race before, not only did our entire team finish the race, they finished 20th out of 166 teams. Members of the SME Team included Nicole Wilder, Nicole McGraw, Kennedy Knutson, Desiree Hansen, Caleb Strickland, Sean McClellan, Michael Sanders, Austen Knapp, Chris Cleveland, Aleksey Johnson, and Mario Chacòn.

CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT
Our customer Brookhaven National Labs, in conjunction with FermiLab (a US government physics laboratory), is developing ultra-sensitive equipment to detect and measure neutrinos. Neutrinos are tiny nearly massless produced by the decay of radioactive elements (like exploding stars and gamma ray bursts), and are elementary particles that lack an electric charge particles that travel at near lightspeeds.
Homestake Mine, Solar Neutrino Experiment About a mile under solid rock in South Dakota’s Homestake Gold Mine, BNL researcher and Nobel Laureate, Raymond Davis, Jr. set up a chlorine-filled detector in 1967 to measure neutrinos from the sun as a way to examine the sun’s energy generation.
Why Do Neutrinos Matter? Because they help further the understanding of physics, which could lead to breakthroughs in the fields of space travel, energy production, and medical research, among others. Brookhaven National Labratory is building a device that slows the movement of molecules in an effort to detect them. Our SEARAY™ and HSEC8 products are being used because of their high bandwidth capabilities.
Our customer Nordson designs and manufactures equipment used for dispensing industrial-strength adhesives, coatings, and sealants. Their products are used in the aerospace, agriculture, appliance, automotive, construction, electronics, food, and textile industries. In fact, you have probably come across a variety of Nordson customers. Ever opened a bag of chips or a box of cereal? Changed a diaper? Kellogg’s, Lays, and major diaper suppliers in the US, like Huggies and Pampers, use the glue dispensing equipment offered by Nordson. These machines use several core Era 1 products, including TSW, SSW, MMSD, IPL1, and IDC assemblies.
