2016 THEMES

Development of Tech Centers leads to a “Tech Surge” • Increase in capabilities resources, partners • Integration = Innovation • Meshing of capabilities • Power of “one Samtec”(not discrete business units)

2016 has already brought some excitement with our largest bookings day to date, which is a direct result of the positive momentum of Signal Integrity “Silicon-toSilicon” products and services. This broad category now represents $200,000,000+ in sales at a 14% growth rate, driving us forward in our ongoing “Tech Surge.” This refers to the expansion and proliferation of “Technology Centers/Capabilities”. Individually these enable great capabilities, but collaboratively, they enable a synergy and an innovation message with which our competitors can’t match.

3

Even with our focus on advanced technology development for the future, it is a key element of our business model and service philosophy not to forget our mainstream core business. As we kick of 2016, we’re focused on a seamless customer experience across all facets of the business; embracing the “and” instead of an “either/or” approach to our business. This means taking care of the big AND the small customers, offering world class service AND the most cutting edge products, expanding our “tech surge” AND taking care of the mainstream core business, working globally AND coming together to function as one Samtec. We’re excited about what this year will bring with us all focused on doing our part to achieve these goals.

While certainly not the only reason, increase in technology capabilities has accelerated sales

SAMTEC CARES - COSTA RICA

The children anxiously await their Christmas gift

The children and families enjoy the beautiful day

For the past several years, Samtec Costa Rica has supported two projects to help raise funds for the Pediatric Palliative Care Foundation. This foundation supports the National Children’s Hospital. Their Palliative Care Unit is the lead agency for all pediatric palliative care and pain control in Costa Rica. Their mission is to give each child with a terminal illness the opportunity to live a dignified life with medical care and personal attention. “Eight Hours of Love”, or Ocho Horas de Amor, is a fundraising campaign where Associates can donate one hour of pay each week to the Children’s Hospital until they contribute a total of eight hours of pay. 100% of the money donated to the Ocho Horas de Amor Campaign goes to the foundation. This year, our Associates collected a record breaking $10,000.

Elsy Masis and Andrea Espinoza make food for the children

Associates at Samtec CR also host a Christmas Party for the children at the Palliative Care Center. Associates can help in many ways including: · Donate a gift for a child selected from a list provided by the Foundation or donate towards a gift. · Volunteer to help cook, deliver food or gifts, decorate, etc. for the party. This year, a team of 30 Associates traveled approximately 3 hours to make the party possible. It was an amazing opportunity to spread love and joy to the families of approximately 200 sick children during this special time of year.

Jane Freeman plays the gutiar while NA Associates sing carols

Samtec NA Carolers visited three local nursing homes during December to sing a few Christmas carols and spread a little holiday cheer. This is the tenth year that Samtec NA has “spread a joyful noise” to elderly residents in our community. Along with singing, the Samtec Carolers also played elves as they donated some much needed toiletry items like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc. to the residents. Thanks to all Associates who contributed in any way to this fun event!

KYLE JOHNSTON

Louisville Associates complaining about a longer than usual commute due to bridge traffic likely aren’t going to get much sympathy from Kyle Johnston in the Array Area. He commutes an hour an a half, each way, to work his three, twelve-hour shifts per week. Despite working at Samtec for six years, he has never had a desire to move from his home in rural Kentucky near Rough River Lake. Kyle has been a cattle farmer nearly all his life, and when his father passed away this past year, he became the sole caretaker for his family’s 40 head of cattle. He cares for his cattle from birth, bottle-feeding in the beginning and finally taking them to the stock market when they are fully grown. The cows come running to Kyle, mooing when they see him, and they follow him around the farm. Kyle jokingly says, “They probably only like me because I am bringing bales of hay.” His niece and nephew also help in raising and selling the cattle from bottle to customer. “They don’t get as attached to them as you might think they would,” he says. Kyle lays out five, seven hundred pound bales of hay every three to five days. He also cuts, racks, and bales the hay himself. He cuts the fields two to three times a year, which provides enough hay to last the cows one year. During a normal week, the cows require approximately four to five hours of his time. For the last four years, Kyle has also helped his friend, a local game warden, organize a youth deer hunt in the fall for kids in need. As you have probably already determined, Kyle loves the outdoors. In his spare time, when he isn’t working at Samtec or with the cattle on his farm, Kyle likes to hunt and fish...a lot.

CHRISTIAN MORAGA In 2006, Samtec started operations in Costa Rica with a small group of six Associates coached by Ed Messer. Among that group was Christian Moraga who was hired as the Human Resources Supervisor. With previous experience in HR, Christian was able to jump in running with both feet. Little did he know then that years later, the CR operation would become a facility with over a thousand Associates. Christian confesses that even with the support of New Albany, he had to overcome some barriers such as language, exponential growth of the labor force and the adaptation process of Samtec’s business model. These were challenges as well as lessons learned for his future development within the company. Christian credits the collaboration of a great team in Costa Rica as one of the main reason for success. He remembers in 2009-2010 when Samtec CR had Associates in four different buildings based on their respective areas. All of this occurred while the current building was being built. This forced Samtec CR to find creative solutions to not only manage the operation without interruption, but also maintain Samtec Sudden Service. It was not an easy task, but it was successfully accomplished.

Christian hiking with his two daughters

Those who know Christian know of his professional dream to work abroad, and what a better opportunity to achieve this dream than within Samtec! Last August, Christian and his family moved to Colorado so he could assist Samtec Microelectronics in identifying opportunities for improvement by putting into practice what he learned about Samtec’s culture and DNA while in CR. Although Christian has been able to see his dream come true, it wasn’t without sacrifice and hardship. It took awhile for Christian, his wife Carolina and their two daughters, to adapt to their new surroundings, but both he and his wife agree it has been a gratifying and rewarding experience to watch their daughters learn to communicate in English without difficulties. However, they admit the cold winter has been by far the biggest struggle to get used to in their new life. Other than that, they feel “PURA VIDA!” (all good) as Costa Ricans say.

Christian fishing in Colorado Springs

The old saying goes “the only constant in life is change”, and Christian feels that phrase summarizes his career path at Samtec. Adaptability is a key quality required for growth.

FACILITY SPOTLIGHT - SAMTEC TOOL ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA

Front Row: Jeff Nesbitt, Joe Haas, Judy Heberle, Ron Horn, Garrick Messmer, Matt Wettekin, Jim Mann, Chris Schreck Back Row: Mark Dickson, Gary Younkin, Mike McCullough, Jeff Gabbard, Mark Husted, Mike Byrd, Mark Danielewicz, Carl Shaw, Mike Orr

“It goes by many names; Samtec Tool, the tool shop, Erie Tool, and yet many at Samtec don’t know where we are and what we do”, Chris Schreck explains. Samtec Tool has been around for a long time now in Erie, PA. This March it will be 23 years! Erie, PA is widely recognized as a hotbed for injection molding and mold building. Located a couple of hours drive east of Cleveland Ohio, the Erie Tool shop originally was comprised of six Associates, three from the ranks at Parm Tool & Die (a vendor to Samtec) including a mold designer, toolmaker and a manager, whom later teamed up with three more toolmakers from various other shops in the area. The timing was fortuitous since later AMP (now TE Connectivity) would buy Parm Tool and bring them in house. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good!

11

Samtec’s need for the Erie Tool shop was centered on having more control over the design and build of the tooling. Over the years, Erie has become the support hub for everything plastic and mold tooling related. Erie supports new product development, tooling and production at global suppliers, reel-to-reel stamping in New Albany and most recently optics and transfer molding. We’re much more than a mold supplier! After 21 years at our original site in the EBCO Industrial Park, we have moved into a portion of a newly constructed building of 12,000 square feet providing more room and a presentable, efficient layout. Over the years, the number of Associates has grown too. We are currently holding steady at nineteen total Associates, including three co-op’s.

Mike McCullough reviewing Moldflow results on the EBTF-RA

The main focus of Samtec Tool is to have control of mold related projects regardless of where they’re being tooled. In engineering, we employ three mold designers and one plastics engineer in Erie, as well as three mold designers in Huizhou China to assist on Asia developed projects. The job is hardly “just” mold design. Like most all Samtec Associates, we wear many hats on any given day. It can range from internal computer support, product design feedback, or issues that a molder might be having with an existing mold. Our engineering staff also uses Autodesk Moldflow to provide feedback to product engineering to debug existing products, or to avoid potential molding issues upfront in the design of new products. Samtec, in its growth, has not been able to take on 100% of the design and build in some cases, but we play an active role in design partnering with many vendors.

Jeff Nesbitt grinding new mold inserts for EBTM-VT mold expansion

Finally we have an experience-rich and diverse group of nine Associates in our shop. They cover everything from building high precision steel inserts, quality inspection, final fitting and assembly, molding first article samples, and low-volume production on our injection molding press. Our skilled mold makers have made everything from core-era-1 TSWs to High-Speed Q Strip® tooling, .4mm pitch SS4/ST4 Series, and countless SEARAY® circuit cores that start to defy all rules on what can be machined - not to mention what can be molded into plastic!

GREENBELT TRAINING

Ellie Ruddell, Justin Fleace, & Chad Jackson record data

Six Sigma is a data-driven approach to process improvement and problem solving. It is a set of tools and techniques that engineers can use to identify root causes of defects and process variation. The name itself refers to a process that produces good parts 99.99966% of the time. In other words, there are only 3.4 defects per million parts. This name has now been adopted to represent all of the quality management tools that help engineers control processes to that level. “Green Belt” is a specific level of Six Sigma training and implementation. Green Belts are Associates that use Six Sigma tools along with their other job responsibilities to solve problems and improve processes. These Associates are taught to use statistics to determine process capability and how suitable a gage is for a particular measurement. They are also taught to evaluate the effect of different variables on the output of a process. Samtec’s Green Belt training featured engineers from across all areas including Process, Product, Tooling, Purchasing, Stamping, Molding and Plating. These added skills will help us improve efficiency, quality and profitability throughout our manufacturing processes. The more engineers we get trained on these tools and techniques, the faster we can identify issues and resolve problems. Congratulations to all our new Green Belt Associates!!

OPTICS FROM THE BEGINING

Jignesh Shah (SOG) and Kyle Russel perform a R&D project.

Optics has greatly evolved since its birth in August 2013. Initially several operators were trained in New Albany, but most of them were used elsewhere at first due to the low number of initial sales. Caleb Keller has been involved with recruiting some of the earliest Associates to the Optics area, and Michael Dean has been instrumental in tackling the logistics and floor management problems related to the unique challenges of manufacturing Optical interconnects. Other than testers, we have no automated assembly in the fiber attach room, but we do have skilled operators who follow the processes laid out for them. Based on the cost of optical interconnects, scrapping a single unit takes on an entirely different meaning. When Caleb and Michael started organizing the first optics area and the dedicated Optics Room, they thought they had a ton of space. Before FireFly™ was released for sale, we only had two operators, a single RF test station and

21

Paula Uphold, Dyan Seville-Jones (SOG), and Catie Eichhorn look at a product and talk about ways to improve quality.

less than $1M in cumulative optical sales. Today we have 25 operators, 4 production lines that run nonstop during the day, 2 RF stations and more than 12 other testers for evaluating product before shipment. We added 10 more feet on to the Optics room and have since even out grown that. With the addition of the large Cadence order, we have had more than $10M in sales between 2015 and 2016, and we know more is coming. Jeremy Brown is one of the longest running FireFly™ operators. Early on, we encountered several board procesing related issues, and Jeremy was a huge help in trying hundreds of different ways in order to find a perfect solution. Justin Reohm is now taking process engineering to new levels. We are now in the process of setting up a state of the art PCB Assembly line, and this new equipment will allow us to put a bare PCB in one end and have a completed assembly come out the other saving lots of valuable resources.

Caleb Keller, Michael Krause(SME), and Michael Dean watch as Ben Haws executes the attach process of a fiber optic cable.

Obviously it hasn’t all been good times. We’ve fought problems like broken fibers and operator variation. In fact, we’re still fighting some of these things, but we’ve now got a crack team with Associates located in multiple locations around the world all working to solve the new issues arise.

unit generates about 4,000 data points start to finish, and we are shipping 2,000 units a week. That’s a whopping 8 million data points per week that the Optics area has to monitor for trends and variations. For the sake of comparison, we generate around 100,000 process order transactions each week on all other products.

Each family of optical products goes through large amounts of testing before it can be released, including one test that requires the part to be in an oven for 4,000 consecutive hours (that’s almost 1/2 a year). Catie Eichorn helps get these tests going and keeps them going. She, along with John Hazell at SOG in CA, work to evaluate the tests and provide failure analysis of what went wrong. Occasionally, they even get to send out one of those “happy” e-mails that we passed without any problems.

“Optics has been the fastest growing and most complex place I have worked in here at Samtec, but being able to work with some extremely intelligent people and watching this area grow from thousands of dollars to millions of dollars makes it very fun.” said Caleb.

Data is very unique to Optical products. Parts are tested 10-15 times throughout the production process before shipment which generates crazy amounts of data. Each

CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT

Our customer DJI uses our FSE Series micro pitch connectors in the design and manufacturing of drones. Their niche is creating superior-quality images using highresolution cameras and camera stabilization systems. Their drones are used in the agriculture, conservation, search and rescue, energy, and filmmaking industries, to name a few. Here is a picture of their Inspire 1 series drone which includes a 4K video camera and 12 megapixel camera. High-end drones like this sell for around $3,500 -$5,000 depending on the make, model, options, etc.

Our customer Second Sight Medical Products designs and builds the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System. A retinal prosthesis is an implant used to partially restore useful vision via an electrical stimulation of the retina in people who have lost their sight due to retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Argus II is designed to bypass the damaged photoreceptors in the eye. A miniature video camera housed in the patient’s glasses captures a scene. The video is then sent to a small patient-worn computer (called a VPU) where it is processed and transformed into instructions that are sent back to the glasses via a cable. These instructions are transmitted to an antenna in the prosthesis which is implanted on the side of the patient’s eye. The electronic pulses then bypass the damaged part of the patient’s eye transmitting visual information along the optic nerve to the brain which creates the perception of light patterns. Patients then learn to interpret these as visual patterns. Samtec Microelectronics (SME) places the IC Package into the prosthesis that is implanted on the eye.

PRODUCING TECH CENTER VIDEOS

Producer Tori Thompson, an Associate of our video agency partner, interviews Jim Nadolny (SIG)

A large differentiator for Samtec is our Signal Integrity Silicon-to-Silicon products and expertise. This refers to our unique ability to service a high speed signal from the bare die, where a signal begins, to the panel and all points in between. Developing solutions for the high-speed signal channel is the primary focus of our “tech surge,” and very a powerful message we have to tell our customers. A large part of that message is our technology centers around the world working together as one Samtec to enable this Silicon to Silicon capability.

Tori hides the mic on SIG’s Corey Kimble before his interview

In order to really tell that story to our customers and help them visualize our investment in that effort, we’ve created Tech Center videos, highlighting the facilities we have dedicated to that promise. Those technology centers are the Advanced Interconnect Design Group centrally located in New Albany, Indiana at our global headquarters, the Samtec Optics Group in Silicon Valley, California, the High Speed Cable Plant serving our customers from Wilsonville, Oregon, Samtec Microelectronics in Colorado Springs, and the Signal Integrity Group/Teraspeed ® Consulting based out of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. These videos give our Associates, and our customers, an opportunity to really see the capabilities and expertise behind those doors. It also allows us a chance to showcase how those technology centers integrate with one another to drive innovation for the full signal channel, rounding out that Silicon-to-Silicon message. You can view these videos on our website at: https://vimeo.com/album/3726240.
