modernism

Modernism is the depiction of art movements in the early 20th Century. It had a large effect on the development of art, design and architecture. The main focus of modernism was to distance itself from traditional art forms and create something new, movements that were created around this time included cubism, surrealism, fauvism etc.

Cubism

1907- 1914 // Picasso & Braque

Futurism

1909- 1944 // Marinetti

Dada

1916- 1923 // Duchamp

Surrealism

1924- 1966 // Andre Breton

Pop Art

1952 // Andy Warhol

Conceptual Art 1961 // Jackson Pollock

Minimalism

Installation Art 1970s // Kurt Schwitters

Post Modernism is the era that followed modernism, it’s characterised by the use of other techniques and the mixing of them. This era has been defined as the death of originality. Another characteristic of postmodern graphic design is that “retro, techno, punk, grunge, beach, parody, and pastiche were all conspicuous trends.”

The City in Flux brief was difficult to understand at first but once I designed my solution it became clear. We had to visualise the change in the city, I chose to focus on statistics and Infographics which are a great way of showing a city in flux. They can document everything that goes on in the city and the people that live there. Each city has different

statistics and no city is the same, so looking at this type of information can be really useful in understanding how the city changes and how that effects us.

Nicholas Feltron

“My chief concern is that the finished graphic be highly scannable and easily digested. For me, this means the elimination of complicated keys and fiddly connections between labels and items. Relationships should be as direct and unadorned as possible and free of unnecessary design flourishes. Nicholas Feltron

I already had a couple of ideas for some of the facts but others were more difficult to represent, every time I looked at a new fact, I tried to visualise a way of presenting it in an informative yet interesting manner.

When I first read the brief I had never heard of the golden record, but after researching the Voyager spacecrafts I became really interested in the preservation and presentation of the disc and think its an excellent idea and a progressive step to finding out if we really are alone. When thinking about the project as a whole its hard to know what to focus on, obviously we can’t reproduce a the golden record because of the sheer amount of information included on it but I’m hoping to design my own version after drawing influences from my artist research. I started designing a blue print inspired alphabet object book. The Earth is so large with so much history, people, places that it’s difficult to encapsulate everything so I’ve decided to use 5 random vector objects for each letter to hopefully show a glimpse of the things we encounter or exist on Earth.

Typography has been a massive factor throughout the course and one of the biggest components in graphic design. Throughout the year I’ve drawn influence on artists, designed three typefaces and watched a documentary on Helvetica. I found it difficult to design my typeface with accuracy and detail. To create these three typefaces I looked at artists such as Josef Brockmann, Herbert Bayer and El Lissitzky.
