Hello!

I’m Sam. I created Solution in 2016 as a pseudonym for my work. It’s been a year since I updated my portfolio and a lots happened since then. In September of 2016 I started my placement year at Redwall as part of my university course. I’ve also been building my own client base & network. I learnt how to deal with my own clients and correspond in a clear, informative manner. In December of 2016 I was paid for my design for the first time.

This gave me a great confidence boost and fuelled my hunger to become a successful designer. Since then I’ve had three new clients and repeat business from some. My journey in seeking to become an eminent designer has only just begun. So sit back, grab a cuppa and have a look at what I’ve been upto!

Samuel is a great designer and also very good at managing his clients with patience and diplomacy. He designed a new logo pro bono for our charity network group, with which we are delighted. I recommend his work to you. Karen Addington CEO - JDRF UK

We would definitely recommend Sam to future clients. I feel that Sam takes on board the needs of his clients in order to create imaginative designs, which can be applied to a range of products. Jane Clarke Dreamcatcher Arts/Clothing LTD

UNIVERSITY PROJECT - COLLIDE - 2016

For my second year final project I was tasked with colliding three themes; Happiness, Future Self and Internet & Digital Age. Our final piece was going to be displayed at an exhibition in June. I wanted to produce something interactive and not just an image or document.

8

I identified in my research that the thing that makes people happy the most is time with family and friends. When I looked back on personal experiences of playing board games with my family I realised they were an integral part of my childhood and are still part of my life today. My future self was more a reflection of how I make decisions for my future career and that every decision I’ve made effects my future. I focused on education and my own design process to create the idea for my board game. The game tests your knowledge and luck much like when you’re designing, sometimes the best pieces of work can be made by accident.

The brief called for a physical and digital output so I handmade the board and UV printed it. I also created a stop motion instruction animation to go through the rules of the game and an instruction booklet. I was really pleased with my outcome and was proud to show it off on exhibition night. I also got people to stop and play against each other which is what I wanted to achieve when I heard the brief.

LOGBOOKS

REDWALL PLACEMENT - LOG - 2016-2017

I spent my placement year at Redwall and I was encouraged to keep a log of my work. I thought I’d use it as an opportunity to present my work in a light, easy to understand format so that it could be flicked through. I wanted the layout to be consistent across all the logs with a unique front cover to distinguish them. The further into the year the more experimental I became with the covers. Once inside the logs the work is split into four categories: Redwall jobs Freelance design Image making Experiments This helped me colour code the work to make it easier to navigate and more colourful. They were great fun to produce and to actually document a years worth of work got me used to hitting deadlines and pushing the boundaries of my design practice. Working at Redwall was a wonderful experience that helped me understand more about the career and role I’ve been striving to achieve.

Bia

CHARITY NETWORK GROUP - FREELANCE - 2017 Bia was one of my larger freelance projects. Karen Addington, CEO of JDRF was looking for a new logo for her peer support group for women leaders in the charitable sector. Because of my previous work for the JDRF I was recommended to create some concepts for them. “Bia” refers to the greek goddess of power and leadership but Karen was struggling to find the appropriate imagery to reference her. So I set about creating a few different concepts. After running them by Karen and the group a few times I was able to create a concept they were happy with.

“Samuel is a great designer and also very good at managing his clients with patience and diplomacy. He designed a new logo pro bono for our charity network group, with which we are delighted. I recommend his work to you.” Although I wasn’t paid for this project I felt a great sense of achievement once I had finished it. It really helped me grow and mature as a designer and built confidence in my ability to satisfy my clients.

JDRF

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS POSTER - DOWNLOADABLE POSTER - 2016 JDRF is a diabetes charity that focuses on children with diabetes and spreading awareness about type 1. They also feel it’s important that we know what the differences are between both types, while working on a cure & funding research. JDRF had an outdated signs and symptoms poster that they felt could incorporate the brand and be better at relaying important information about recognising type 1 diabetes while also being eye catching and colourful. This project was really important to me as type 1 diabetes effects my sister and I wanted to use my skills to help raise awareness. It was also a valuable experience as I was able to work with JDRF’s brand guidelines to keep the poster consistent with their brand.

INSTAGRAM

ASSETS - SOLUTION_GD - 2017

To keep an online presence I often compete in challenges like the 36 days of type, where I had to design a letter and upload them once a day. It was a lot of fun and kept me busy designing every day, it helped me learn to stick to a deadline and keep up the same standard of quality.

16

I also created a short origami animation that had the vector shapes of each stage of production. Solution_gd has a variety of different work from pencil shavings to coding experiments. I’m always uploading more and sharing my work with the community. Instagram is a great medium for showcasing work and is one of my favourite social medias for finding inspiration and other visual delights. Instagram: instagram.com/solution_gd

VOID - SPECIAL STUDY - COMING SOON

SPECIAL STUDY - CODING EXPERIMENTS - 2017 During my final year I learnt how to use Processing, a free java script coding program, to create a rating system for my special study. “VOID is a publication of my journey from being a complete beginner to creating a fully functioning rating system that keeps track of the data inputted. Using this code helped me create another system that presented the data in a more visual format.

19

I wanted to use the special study as an opportunity to learn a new application that will help improve my practice and general skill level. I believe the more I understand a new process the easier it is to apply it to my work and use it practically. While I still consider myself a beginner, I feel confident in my ability to create a visual output that compliments my style and practice.

INFOGRAPHICS

CITY IN FLUX - UNIVERSITY PROJECT - 2016

The brief was to visualise the change in the city, I chose to focus on statistics and Infographics which are a great way of showing a city in flux. They can document everything that goes on in the city and the people that live there. Each city has different statistics and no city is the same, so looking at this type of information can be really useful in understanding how the city changes and how that effects us.

20

Each fact is represented visually to make them more understandable and to make the fact more interesting. I enjoyed doing this project and as it was my first university project I was proud of my work.
