Reaching Higher... For University Extended Education (UEE) and International Programs & Global Engagement (IPGE), 2014–2015 was a year of transition and growth. In addition to the launch of IPGE, an increase of revenue (3–5%) was accomplished across all domestic programs. This increase was especially impressive considering the change experienced across throughout the organization. Over the academic year, successful searches were completed for: Director of Self-Support Degree Programs and Open University Advising Director of International Admissions and Outreach Director of Study Abroad Assistant Director of University Semester Abroad Study Abroad Advisors
These new hires join the 170 staff and 51 (28 full-time, 23 part-time) faculty members that support UEE and IPGE—and by extension, the University’s goals.
... and Farther This new staff solidifies the foundation of IPGE, a new department that expands California State University, Fullerton’s commitment to internationalization. The creation of IPGE reduces silos; increases communication and coordination; decreases redundancy in services; and increases the capacity to provide systemic, high-quality service to students, Cal State Fullerton academic programs and international partners. The creation of IPGE also saw the initiation of the IPGE Advisory Board, which includes representatives from all colleges, across all areas within the Division of Academic Affairs and across campus divisions. Advisory board members provide feedback on IPGE reports/data, recommendations related to new/ongoing international initiatives and ideas for future programming. An example of new programming includes a collaboration with the Faculty Development Center on a series of internationally focused workshops during academic year 2015–2016.

Fullerton Arboretum The Fullerton Arboretum is a living laboratory for high-impact practices (HIPs), including student research and art projects. Student research projects included: Anthropology Professor Sara E. Johnson and Biological Science Professor Joel K. Abraham are PI and Co-PI of Urban Agriculture Community-based Research Experience (U-ACRE). U-ACRE students gain experience in research and outreach by participating in ongoing community-based projects at the Fullerton Arboretum. Geology Professor W. Richard Layton’s students studied hydrogeology using the Arboretum’s working wells. Layton was honored by the National Ground Water Association (N.G.W.A.) for outstanding contributions, and has received over $2 million in Wresearch grants. Biology Professor H. Jochen Schenk involves undergraduate and graduate students in his research, much of which takes place at the Fullerton Arboretum, mainly on plants in the desert, subtropical woodland and cultivated orchard collections, as well as those on chaparral hill. Students involved have presented at conferences and even had their findings published. Art Professor Lawrence Yun holds his watercolor class at the Fullerton Arboretum so that his students can draw inspiration from the beautiful scenes. These students also display their work at an annual art show hosted by the Fullerton Arboretum. History Professor Ben Cawthra and his students curate and oversee exhibits in the Fullerton Arboretum’s Nikkei Heritage Museum, such as “New Birth of Freedom: Civil War to Civil Rights in California.” The Fullerton Arboretum also provides scholarships to full-time continuing upper division or graduate students, including the Jorice Maag Local History Scholarship ($1,000) for those pursuing study in topics related to California history; and the David L. Walkington Memorial Scholarship, for those majoring in biological sciences or related fields which emphasize botany.
I. PROMOTING STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, RETENTION AND GRADUATION
The Fullerton Arboretum provides a space for students to escape and explore. I find it to be a wonderful place to come with friends to sketch and study nature that is so nearby. It is great to have a place for us students to display our work that reaches the public, and allows us to get our feet wet in the industry as we make our way through school.

III. STEWARD OF PLACE
Leadership Development for Public Agencies Since 2007, UEE’s Leadership Development for Public Agencies has helped emerging leaders working in the Orange County public sector further develop successful leadership behaviors. An important goal of the Leadership Development program is to positively impact the work public sector employees do on a daily basis. The program is designed to facilitate “learning transfer,” which allow students to take the skills and knowledge gained from the classes and apply them to their work and life. This year, the 9th cohort completed the program. To date, the 225 graduates have included fire chiefs, police lieutenants, HR managers and other supervisors and managers.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at CSUF (OLLI-CSUF) offers more than 100 classes each year that are open to the public at no charge. This includes three medical series, as well as Transitions in Retirement, a program of Saturday classes designed to help people create a successful retirement. OLLI-CSUF programs reflect the energy, spirit and dedication to learning of the organization’s members. These attributes were exemplified by OLLI-CSUF’s flash mob to celebrate its 35th anniversary. About 60 OLLI members aged 60-85 danced to the Pharrell Williams song “Happy” in October of 2014 in the campus quad. They were surrounded by cheering, photo-taking students as well as local reporters. Further exemplifying the value of OLLI-CSUF programs is the steady growth of growth of membership over the previous six year.
