the essence

2

Shapes form an important building block in the visual grammar and visual thinking we have at our disposal. Every designed form and structure we see, evokes a certain understanding within us. Gentle, flowing curves give us the feeling of femininity and softness while sharp, firm edges signify order, stability and balance. Shapes have an endless plethora of characteristics. Drawing inspiration from history as well, we have the introduction of the term “sacred geometry which is used by archaeologists, anthropologists and geometricians to include the philosophical, spiritual and religious beliefs that have risen regarding geometry and its shapes in various cultures during the course of time.

I have always had a keen interest in the form and structure of objects - abstract or concrete. I tend to associate every feeling and emotion with a depiction drawn in my mind, made up of a variety of lines. This collection of earrings that I hereby present to you, are manifestations of various human qualities and behavioral attitudes. Every piece has a certain significance explained further ahead. They are a group of miscellaneous shapes accompanied by connectors, that give you the power to pair them as per your wish and perception of the forms.

I was eager to see my ideas come to life and g a i n p h y s i c a l r e a l i t y. So, I decided to 3-D PRINT my prototype designs.

For my final three-dimensional shapes, I decided on WOOD as the composite material. I also wanted to explore creating two-dimensional shapes, to produce a stark contrast. For which, I selected COPPER.

two-dimensional: copper shapes

The diamond outline of this structure signifies b e a u t y, i n n o c e n c e a n d p u r i t y. T h e i n n e r a b s t r a c t forms are tweaked and trimmed geometric shapes that bring in a contrast depicting irregularity and adventure. Combined, the whole shape resonates the concept of rarity and strength of character. An extended half-circle, this uncommon curved form is a pictorization of sensitivity and emotion. Paired with the triangular shape inside it, it resembles strength, growth and change. The softness of the curves speaks of gentleness, a loving nature and receptiveness. This elongated and altered octagonal form depicts infinity and transition, along with an emotinal flow through the top right curve. The almost-trapezium within is a symbol of balance, stability and development. A trapezium as mentioned above is a of stability and growth. T h e rhombus signifies speed and movement which is softened by the organic shape surrounding it.

This bulging rectangle symbolises order, reliability and rationality along with gentleness, peace, and independence. There is a contrasting factor created by the presence of the curve. The inner triangle resting on its base is a strong sign of strength, s t a b i l i t y a n d b a l a n c e . To g e t h e r , t h i s s h a p e c a r r i e s a lot of might and control.

The main rectangular structure signifies trust, s e c u r i t y, s t a b i l i t y a n d s u p p o r t , w h i c h i s a l s o emphasised by the negative shape in the centre. When combined with the pyramidial shapes on the two ends, the form is an emblem of strength, domination and guidance.

This rhombus is a symbol of speed, motion and direction. However, the curved edge represents the concept of slowing down and calmness in the midst of it all. The triangle within adds strength, energy and tension with its diagonal direction.

As an extruded triangle, this form depicts the same stability and power as that of a flat triangle. It has angular edges that are altered to produce dynamism. The lengthened pentagon in the centre is a pictorization of uniqueness and structure. It is also considered sacred because of the number 5.

The small triangular form beside it, brings in instability because of its tilt. It may be overpowered in size but is still significant.

The pentagon signifies transcendence and noteworthy power because it is a symbol of all five elements of nature in one. Enclosing and protecting the spherical negative space in the centre, it also speaks of unity a n d h a r m o n y.
