SANAM ABDULSALAM

Sixth semester internship portfolio, 2021 College of Engineering, Trivandrum

Hello! My name is Sanam Abdulsalam. I

am a Third year architecture student and am extremely interested in the narratives and stories that architecture has to tell. I always attempt to tell stories through my projects; as seen in my visualizations or the concept. I envison spaces with the lives of the people that will come across it. I am curious to know how the practical constraints of the field can use my skillset whilst expanding my practical knowledge in the architecture field.

AREA OF INTEREST Design of public spaces and the study of human behavior in public spaces has always interested me. I am very curious to learn how to design accessible and sustainable public spaces for the general public within the constraints of the practical world of architecture.

THAKSHAKTHI Government School

Thakshakthi, is a government school designed to break out from the box of memorizing to

the corridors of learning. The aim is to provide maximum facilities within the structure offering flexibility to the spaces and activities, with modules that address the communal needs the school fulfils in its lifetime. Children are improvisors and make the best out of what is given to them, learning and growing in the process. The design was intended to overcome budget and funding obstacles and still foster a learning environment without compromising quality.

Junk playground

The walls of the classrooms enable creation of flexible spaces and intermixed sessions with students of diverse age groups. The louvered bifold windows ensured natural ventilation and create folds in the physical barrier to the outside. Government schools tend to consider playground equipment as luxury; introducing junk playgrounds where play is a manifestation of the child’s imagination.

Introducing accessible digital education in a budget constrained design requires practical solutions. The idea is to use the simpest digital device, a mobile to be used as a projector.

KHULA RE Public toilet

Khula re is located in Raghurajpur, a village on the shores of Bhargavi river, in Puri district of Odisha. Bringing about a behavioural change risks potential abandonment of the structure as a whole. The design responded to the community’s preference to open defecation and took form as a way for them to practice their habits without health hazards. The concept was to intoduce elements in to their existing environment to provide the immersive experience they prefer, while filtering out the hazards of hygiene and safety associated with it. The idea was to design a respectful, responsive and a familiar environment to provide them the freedom of choice to the various degrees of privacy while keeping intact their interests; with provision for additional modules.

FEMALE OD in groups during the evening hours is a time to get away from chores and chat with friends. Women not defecating during this time may still accompany friends. Share same beliefs. Time for OD is considered a relief from confinements of the house and walking long distances is considered healthy.
