Welcome to the February edition of 78209 Magazine!
This month, we have some fun Valentine’s Day-themed content for your enjoyment. Check out our ‘09 Eats section for delicious spots to grab a sweet treat and our February calendar for a few V-Day activities!
Our business profile this month holds a special place in my heart. I remember going to Artworks Art Studio as a child and falling in love with artistic creative expression. Something I still very much enjoy today! Walking into Artworks brought back a flood of wonderful memories. While chatting with owner Sarah Longridge, I was so excited to learn that the magic is still very much alive.
Our neighbor this month also holds a special place in my heart as a single mom. Charli Moore is a skilled hairstylist and mother to a beautiful young daughter. Their home was overflowing with a sense of peace and love throughout. A true reflection of the love Charli and her daughter Ember hold for each other and the world around them! It was such a joy getting to peek inside their sanctuary and home base for adventures.
Wishing you lots of love!

Dr. Michelle Cuellar Everidge Named CEO & President of the Witte Museum
Rooted in San Antonio with a significant tenure at the Witte Museum, Dr. Everidge brings a unique combination of institutional knowledge, community connection and visionary leadership to this role. She succeeds Dirk Elmendorf, who stepped in as a transitional leader following the transformative legacy of Marise McDermott’s remarkable 20-year tenure. “Michelle will lead the Witte with expertise and passion that honors the museum’s legacy,” said Ryan Pape, Chair of the Witte Museum Board of Trustees.
“We are excited for her to work with the community to shape a bold future for the museum.” Dr. Everidge’s extensive academic background underscores her commitment to education and cultural stewardship, values that are central to the Witte Museum’s mission. She holds a PhD from the University of Delaware, an MA from Parsons School of Design and an AB from Princeton University, where she graduated summa cum laude. A Hometown Leader for the Witte’s Next Century Dr. Everidge’s connection to the Witte began long before her professional career. Growing up in San Antonio, she visited the museum often as a child, sparking a lifelong love of museums and history.
Fifteen years ago, she joined the Witte as a grant writer and quickly developed expertise across the
organization. Her work has spanned fundraising and finance, curatorial and collections and inquiry-based pedagogy, culminating in her most recent role as Deputy Director. Dr. Everidge is known for her innovative leadership and her ability to listen deeply to the needs of community members, families, children, donors and partners. She has spearheaded transformative initiatives such as the acclaimed Black Cowboys: An American Story exhibition and the 2024 Conference on Texas. The conference, themed Ode to Juneteenth: Slavery in Texas, featured keynote speaker Annette Gordon-Reed and drew over 400 attendees, sparking critical conversations about the role of slavery in the state’s complex history.
In addition to her leadership at the Witte, she serves on the Executive Committee of the Texas Association of Museums where she is dedicated to the broader museum community and cultivating meaningful partnerships. “Leading the Witte Museum is both a personal and professional honor,” said Dr. Everidge. “The Witte has shaped who I am, and I am deeply committed to its mission of inspiring people to shape the future of Texas. I look forward to building on the foundational work of Marise McDermott and Dirk Elmendorf to ensure the Witte continues to serve as a center for curiosity, discovery and transformation for generations to come.”
Looking Ahead to the Centennial Dr. Everidge’s leadership comes at an exciting time for the Witte as it prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026. The centennial will include a year of celebrations featuring a community-wide birthday bash, exhibitions showcasing the museum’s collections and newly discovered fossils and an interactive journey through San Antonio’s cultural and culinary history. Under Dr. Everidge’s guidance, the Witte is poised to deepen its role as a vital cultural and educational resource for Texas, while amplifying its focus on Texas Deep Time, the themes of Land, Sky and Water and the unique viewpoint of millions, thousands and hundreds of years in the state’s history.
Bank of Texas Expands Footprint With First San Antonio Branch
At the bustling intersection of Broadway and Hildebrand, the former Wells Fargo building is getting new life. After a complete remodel the site is reopening as the first San Antonio branch for Bank of Texas today.
“Business is booming in Texas and as we looked at our overall growth plan for the state, we knew San Antonio is where we wanted to be,” said Bank of Texas San Antonio market president Parker Hensley. “We’ve put a lot of energy and intention into hand selecting the right team of people who are passionate about serving this community, so a physical location was the next step.”
Bank of Texas remodeled the 2,500 sq. foot space which will serve general banking, business and mortgage clients.
“We are really looking forward to welcoming folks into the remodeled, rebranded, refreshed space and really showcasing what Bank of Texas has to offer,” said Hensley, adding that they worked with local company Embree Group to overhaul the space.

Artworks ART Studio
Encouraging Creativity Beyond the Screen
Children today spend hours glued to screens, whether on TV, smartphones, or other digital devices. However, a local business is successfully shifting its focus to hands-on creativity.
Sarah Longridge, the owner of Artworks Art Studio in 78209, encourages kids to explore creativity, embrace messiness, and learn from mistakes.
“We’re an after-school program that gives children the freedom to express themselves and create whatever they want,” Sarah explained. “We also offer directed classes where we explore history, study famous artists, and work on projects inspired by them.”
This approach contrasts with today’s technologydriven world, where kids rely on touchscreens for instant entertainment and information. Many students welcome the break from screens and enjoy engaging in hands-on creativity at Artworks.
“They love stepping into a non-digital, tactile space where everything isn’t instantly available
at their fingertips,” Sarah said. “Here, they must work for what they create. When parents arrive to pick them up, the most engaged kids don’t want to leave because they’re so absorbed in their projects.”
At Artworks, kids have the freedom to be messy and make mistakes—two things that don’t always work well at home or school. Sarah believes mess fuels creativity, and mistakes spark imagination.
“At Artworks, a mistake can turn into something even better and more beautiful,” she said. “That’s one of the best lessons art can teach. It’s powerful for kids to realize they can transform a mistake into something positive.”
More Than Just an Afterschool Program
Parents can purchase a set number of afterschool classes and renew them as needed. Artworks also hosts birthday parties, offering two-hour private bookings with a variety of art activities and a separate room for refreshments.
“The group has the whole studio to themselves,” Sarah said. “We offer almost 100 different projects to choose from, some of which match popular birthday themes.”
Summer camps at Artworks continue to grow in popularity. These camps feature mixed-age groups, diverse themes, four daily projects or lessons, studio free time, and snack breaks.
“We book out well in advance,” Sarah said. “Customers are asking about summer camp registration earlier each year. This time, they were inquiring about it as early as Christmas.”
Creativity for All Ages
While Artworks focuses primarily on kids, adults can also explore their creativity. The studio offers team-building workshops and adult art parties, including BYOB and DIY activities.
Recent adult programs have included a mosaic project for a local temple and a corporate event for Whataburger.
From Teacher to Entrepreneur
Artworks allows Sarah the unique opportunity to blend her creative thinking with the analytical skills needed to run a business.
She attended Trinity University, where she earned dual degrees—a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a Master of Arts in Education. She began her career as an elementary school teacher, later taking a part-time job at Artworks. Eventually, she left teaching after securing a full-time position at the studio.
When the previous owner decided to step away, she approached Sarah with the idea of buying the business.
“I thought she was crazy. I didn’t know anything about running a business,” Sarah recalled.
“I still feel more connected to my creative brain than my business brain. But now, I have a great handle on how things work. Being an entrepreneur is hard, but it’s really fun.”
Providing kids with an outlet to explore art is incredibly rewarding, especially for their physical and mental development.
“I tell the kids all the time that art and creativity are good for their brains. When they smear paint all over their hands, it generates new nerve endings. It’s about creating those neural pathways through sensory play, which is so important for child development.”

Finding Home in San Antonio: Charli
Moore’s Journey
“I remember stepping off the airplane and feeling like I had just stepped into an oven. What am I getting myself into?”
For first-time visitors, the Texas heat can be a shock. Charli Moore quickly learned to embrace the positive aspects of San Antonio’s hot weather. As someone who loves the outdoors, she welcomed the change from Washington State’s cold and rainy climate.
“I acclimated and started to blossom in the sunshine. Now, I just can’t get away from it. I love the vitamin D—it makes me feel so much more alive,” Charli said.
Charli moved to San Antonio to be closer to family in Texas and Mexico and to start fresh. As a young teen, she had always been drawn to hairstyling and fashion, seeing it as a creative and exciting way to make a living.
“At 14, I was already cutting my friends’ hair and being creative in my own way. I always thought it would be a fun career,” she recalled. “I grew up watching America’s Next Top Model and was obsessed with the photo shoots. I wanted to be part of that world.”
Her journey as a hairstylist in San Antonio led to a chance encounter with Jax Roberson, the renowned owner of Jax Studio, whose business provides specialized makeup and hair styling for film, photography, and weddings.
“I had been following Jax on social media and admired her work in classical makeup for film and photography,” Charli said. “I was doing hair for a wedding party when I happened to meet her. We just clicked.”
Jax soon offered Charli a position at her studio, an opportunity that thrilled her but also conflicted with her. As a mother and self-employed stylist, Charli had the flexibility to schedule clients around her daughter’s needs. Taking on a studio job felt like a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity—but only if she could maintain a healthy work-life balance.
“I told Jax I really wanted to work for her, but my daughter is my world, and I needed to be there for her,” Charli recalled. “Jax was so respectful of my situation. She created a work schedule that allowed me to pursue my dream job while still being there for my daughter. This opportunity found me at just the right time.”
Growing in Her Career and Community
Working at Jax Studio has helped Charli grow not only as a stylist but also as a person. She feels inspired by the strong women she meets in the studio.
“There’s so much positive feminine energy from these clients,” Charli said. “I’ve learned so much from them about what it means to be a person—and specifically, a woman.”
These are the same lessons she wants to pass on to her eight-year-old daughter, Ember.
“The second she was born, I knew being a mother would be the most important thing I ever do.”
Though they share a deep bond, Charli and Ember have opposite personalities. Charli considers herself an introvert, while Ember is an extrovert. Charli decided to move from their isolated Hill Country town to San Antonio’s 78209 neighborhood.
“I knew she needed to be around more people, so I found a place in 78209. It’s easy to walk outside and have so many things to do.”
Mother and daughter love spending time outdoors and exploring San Antonio’s many parks and attractions. Their favorite spot is Brackenridge Park, where they have a special tree that they consider a second home.
“The tree is easy to climb, and we love sitting in it. Ember and I pretend we live in the tree,” Charli said. “One day, some kids asked if we really lived there. ‘Are you wild people?’ they asked. My daughter said, ‘Yeah, we’re nature ladies.’”
An Unconventional Life, Filled with Joy
Charli and Ember also share a love for animals, often drawing attention when they take their cat for a walk.
“We put the cat in a pink harness and carry her in a baby carrier. She is so spoiled. We love it, and it’s super fun.”
Moving to San Antonio has brought new meaning to Charli’s life. She is closer to family, co-parents with Ember’s father, and has built a community where she truly feels at home.
“I’ve always craved a sense of community. I needed to challenge myself to find it—and I did in 78209.”

Heart Health Information
The Importance of Prevention and Screenings
By Dr. Oscar Rivera, interventional cardiologist with CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System
Your heart is the most vital organ in your body, working to distribute blood, oxygen, and nutrients to cells and tissues, which is why it is so important to keep it healthy.
February is American Heart Month, recognized for raising awareness about heart disease and highlighting ways people can reduce their risk.
According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S., killing about 630,000 Americans each year.
Taking action to care for your heart can help prevent future complications and improve quality of life by minimizing shortness of breath, chest pain, heart attack, or stroke.
Heart disease is a term used to encompass a variety of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels: coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, heart rhythm problems, endocarditis, and congenital heart disease.
Prevention is key to avoiding heart disease. It is the most important thing you can do for yourself. Screenings for hypertension can start at age 18, though cholesterol screenings are recommended at age 30.
Prevention can be as simple as engaging in some level of activity. Exercise is important in keeping your heart healthy. It is recommended to do some sort of exercise for at least 30 minutes five times a week. It could be walking, weightlifting, bicycle riding, isometric exercises, or swimming.
It is also crucial to eat healthy foods and create healthy habits. This is especially important for those who have a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
The Mediterranean and DASH diets are proven to help reduce the risk of heart disease. They both promote the importance of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The DASH diet focuses on reducing sodium intake to help lower blood pressure. The Mediterranean diet emphasizes healthy fats and overall dietary balance that
can help with blood pressure, glucose, and cognitive function, like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Those with high blood pressure can follow the DASH diet, which focuses on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lowfat or fat-free dairy, lean protein, and nuts. It has been shown to help reduce the risk of heart failure.
Heart disease can present itself differently among men and women.
For some women, symptoms of heart disease are heart attack, fluttering feelings in the chest, shortness of breath, sudden fatigue, or swelling in the lower extremities like feet, ankles, or legs.
Heart attack symptoms can also differ between men and women. While both may experience chest pain, women have described also experiencing other symptoms like nausea, pain in the neck or back, and chest pain described as pressure or tightness.
Women can also experience pain in their neck, jaw, shoulder, upper back, or upper stomach; sweating; unusual fatigue; heartburn or indigestion; pain in one or both arms; shortness of breath; or lightheadedness or dizziness.
Having a primary care physician is beneficial. It helps to have a healthcare professional who knows your family history and habits looking out for you and can make recommendations as needed.
If additional heart care is needed, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System has cardiovascular experts available, offering a wide range of interventions.
Our patients can rest assured that if they, unfortunately, do need treatment for any heart disease, we can care for them right here in San Antonio.
Care can range from simple screenings and minimally invasive procedures to more complex invasive treatments.

2025 Alamo Heights ISD Teacher of the Year
Courtesy of AHISD
Braden Cain, history teacher at Alamo Heights High School, is the 2025 Alamo Heights ISD Teacher of the Year.
Cain joined Alamo Heights ISD in 2023 and currently teaches World History and US History. He began his teaching career in Florida in 2020.
Though he initially thought of becoming a public defender, it was during his time in graduate school working in youth and young adult ministry that he reconsidered his career path. He comes from a family of educators, including his mother who was a high school principal and his grandfather who was a principal and longtime school board member.
“The running joke in my family is that I never wanted to join ‘the family business,’” Cain says. “I thought it required too much emotional energy and demanded too many hours to be a practical career choice. Life is funny that way. What I’ve learned since then is that there is nothing in this world I would rather be than a teacher. The emotional energy poured into
students helps them see the world through new perspectives. The hours spent designing and innovating bring me joy and excitement. I am proud to say that I have fallen in love with the family business.”’
Cain will represent AHISD as the district’s nominee for the Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching and Region 20 Teacher of the Year.
“As a third-generation educator, Braden has embraced his calling with energy and devotion, making an indelible mark on the lives of his students and colleagues,” says AHHS Principal Cory Smith. “As his proud principal, I can honestly say he is among the best and brightest teachers I have known in my 27 years of public education. This recognition is a testament to the profound impact he has on our school community.”
In November, each campus hosted a Teacher of the Year nomination process and selected one teacher who exemplifies the Profile of a Learner to represent their campus this year. A Selection Committee of AHISD teachers and staff met in January to select the District Teacher of the Year. All five campus teachers of the year were recognized at the January 15 Board Meeting, where the District Teacher of the Year was announced.
The 2025 Campus Teachers of the Year are:
• Alamo Heights HS - Braden Cain, Social Studies teacher
• Alamo Heights Junior School - Kimberly Brady, Math teacher
• Cambridge Elementary - Barry Adame-LeMaitre, 3rd grade teacher
• Woodridge Elementary - Kim Holland, 2nd grade teacher
• Howard ECC - Jaeleen Fullen, Physical Education teacher

School Board Recognition Month

January was School Board Recognition Month in Texas and Alamo Heights ISD celebrated its trustees for their dedication and commitment to the district and its students.
“I want to thank our AHISD Trustees for their dedication to our district,” said Superintendent Dana Bashara. “These seven volunteers are true champions for public schools and for our district, and they are a real blessing to our community.”
The theme of this year’s School Board Recognition Month is Leadership for Tomorrow’s Texas, which highlights the service of Trustees and their commitment to creating meaningful educational experiences and opportunities that prepare students for college, careers, and beyond.
