Kodungallur always reminds people of Muziris and its importance in their rich history and culture. Kodungallur, surrounded by backwaters and the sea has an illustrious past to tell. Muziris, the port city was one of it’s kinds in the world and this took Kodungallur town into the World Map. Kodungallur is a prime location where three major religions (Christianity, Judaism and Islam) first stepped on it’s shores.

I N T R O D U C T I O N

We have focused primarily on the Sree Kurumba Bhagavathy Temple, Kodungallur because the Temple is the most important factor of interest now, with the Muziris in the past. The cultural and architectural development in and around the Temple are the most relevant subjects of study. Today, Kodungallur have various representations from the past, that had a say in the socio-cultural and religious aspects of the region. From all of this, we are trying to achieve a Gateway that opens from the active Temple area to the diminishing Muziris region.

Kodungallur served as one of the most important ports in South India, due to Kodungallurs access to the backwarters it was also a strategic entry point for the naval fleets to the extensive Kerala backwaters network.

The nearest railway station from Kodungallur is Irinjalakuda, yet the most used station by the locals is the Chalakudy station because of the limited number of trains stopping in Irinjalakuda Cochin International Airport is the only airport nearby.

The Northern part of Kodungallur muncipality was chosen for further study. This is due to the fact that this area acts as the central hub of Kodungallur, it is the commercial central of the muncipality. This area was the historic centre for the development of kodungallur town. The area also features a stark contrast between the new and the old.

When one approches the temple from the bypass one will notice a contrast between the building towards the bypass and towards the temple. One can even notice ecological difference as we approach the temple. More trees with larger canopy which gives a covered feeling towards the temple.Creating an intimate space. Contrasting image can be noticed in all four sides of the temple. North Nada contains social infrastructures such as a hospital and the police station. In South Nada side commercial areas florished due to the temple attrcting large groups of travellers and tourists for its festivals. Hotels and resturats florished due to the temple, as it accomodated people for the festival.

Development Pattern due to the influence of highway

Kodungallur lies along NH17, which divides the city into two equal halves approximately, running parallel to the Pullut Puzha. The Kodungallur-Shoranur SH22 begins at the Bhagavathy Temple, which is located on NH17 at the heart of the town. The railway station at Irinjalakuda is further north along SH22. The St. Thomas Church lies to the north of this intersection while the Cheraman Masjid lies to the south, both along the national highway. To the west at Azhikode is St. Thomas’ Shrine, which preserves the relic of St. Thomas the Apostle. It is located on the banks of the Periyar at Azhikode

• There is a steady increase in the built environment of Kodungallur when we compare the period of 20102020 and is expected to increase in coming years too • This increase has come with a rapid decline in open spaces and vegatal cover, which is a negative pospect for the future

K O D U N G A L L U R

28

• We all know urbanisation this results in a lot more

level is on the rise and wider roads in the town

• The crowd influx is a constantly increasing feature which is only progressing in the same direction now, and also in the future • The activities and its intensity is on the rise and this means there will be a lot more demands on resources • The ever increasing traffic in the bypass road will make it a further dangerous road for vehicular transportation 2010

Analysis The commercial district is the economic hub of kodungallur, and during regular days, it is the busiest park of Ward 4.

M O R P H O L O G Y

The commercial district i tightly paacked with few open spaces, being centred by the bypass junction which is located on the NH 66 means it is always teaming with traffic which moves through Kerala. On the side of the road buildings with a single level are rare, G+3 are the most common building height followed by a few G+2 and some exceptional g+4 The roof types commonly found are flat roofs and shett roofs. The civil District is one of the most important districts in the kodungallur muncipality. The civil district contains, Thaluk Hospital, The Civil coourt, Muncipality offices, Secondary school, Post offices and other government establishments. Slightly smaller and more human scaled buildings can be seen in this distrcit compared to the commercial district. The disrict is shaded due to its less wider roads with tall buildings and presense of vegetation on the roads. Most common roof type is gable roofs

Urban heat island effect takes place at the bypass junction due to the number of highrise concrete building as well as the lack of dense vegetation on the bypass and the bypass junction.

The sides of the bypass is densitly vegetated but lack of tall tress to provide areas with shade, combined with the wide highway road which traps heat, creates an undesireable environment around the bypass for pedtrian use.

Enclousure study less wide roads that are surrounded by taller gates and buildings do create a sense of enclosure, this helps to create a smaller scale for the users, but also at the same time could lead to less eyes on the road, leading to less safe roads.

A

B The larger Arterial Roads allow for more eyes on the road, thus making it safer, trees act as barriers between the lanes which can obstrcu vision of pedestrians

D

C

The bypass and the north Nada roads are both wide, with central islands which hosts vegetation. The scale is very large for humans and both the roads were developed with heavy traffic in mind.

The central distributer road is at a smaller scale. these roads provide acess to various activities such as hospitals, This road does not have heavy pedstrian footfall

The colours are the colours that form the space are colours of concerte, advertisiemnt boards and bright colours which attarct shoppers. Shaded areas are rare.

The secound part of the street is located between the bypass junction and the midway point of the street. The buildings are still large scaled and majourity of the buildings being commercial buildings. vegetation is rare.

The third part of the street is located towards the temple, this is where we can witness a transition of the physcial relam, the buildings start becoming more human scaled, with less bright colours, There are more vegetation here than the areas towards the bypass junction. The colour green starts becoming more prominent here.
