Members Since the ’50s Celebrating Some Special Chamber Folks Founded in 1929, the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce has steadfastly stayed true to its original nonprofit incorporation papers as drafted by city luminaries such as founder Ole Hanson Jr., H.H. Cotton, Thomas Murphine, O.M. Berg and many other signatories on the initial submission on Dec. 18, 1928: “That the purposes of this organization shall be for the extension and promotion of the trade and commerce of the City of San Clemente, County of Orange, State of California.” Since its founding, thousands of businesses have graced the membership logs of the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce, but these five local businesses have all been steady, recurring members since the 1950s.

The accounting firm was started in 1951 by Robert C. Hayden, CPA, after serving in the U.S. Army in World War II and expanded in 1971 when Chuck Narey joined. In 1984, John Persich joined and the company became known as Hayden, Narey and Persich. Bob Hayden retired shortly thereafter. Narey, who is in semi-retirement now living in Colorado, fondly remembers his years serving in numerous roles with the chamber, including on the Board of Directors and the Fiesta Music Festival committee. “I did it to help, but mostly it was fun, and I got to enjoy so many friends and the great Chamber staff, including (former CEO) Lynn Wood,” Narey recalls.

Owned and operated by one of San Clemente’s most prominent families, DeNault’s Hardware was founded in 1956 by Jim and Ruth DeNault when the city only had a few lumber yards, three hardware stores and only 3,500 residents. It remains a family business, with all of Jim and Ruth’s children having roles in the business. Today, a third generation of DeNaults is working in the family business, which has locations in San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo and Carlsbad. Family matriarch Ruth DeNault—whom the Chamber honored in 2002 with a Lifetime

Achievement Award—remains active in the business and is involved in the community through her role with the Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens.

The first female president of the San Clemente Little League, Ruth was honored in 2014 by being inducted into the city’s Wall of Recognition.

Founded in 1951 by Dick Arons, South Coast Distributing Company continues to be family-operated, offering a wide range of services supporting the restaurant, janitorial and bar industries today, just as it did 70 years ago. The company joined the San Clemente Chamber in 1952 and has been a consistent member ever since. “My dad always said to support local business,” says Curt Arons, who, along with his five other siblings, have all worked for the family business, although he alone runs the business now with his wife, Angel. “That’s one thing we’ve always stressed; that’s where being a part of the Chamber has always been helpful.”

Dr. Ted Griffin opened his business in 1957 offering vision and eye health services to San Clementeans; today, his sons—Powers, Randall and Patrick—have helped grow the business into a multi-location, full-service eye care provider. Not long after opening his practice, Ted joined the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce and was an active member of the community, just as his sons are presently. “Through the great example our parents made, my brothers and I have enjoyed the value of getting involved and giving back to the community,” said Patrick. “We have been active in many organizations over the years and have enjoyed being part of the Chamber consistently. This is our home, and we take pride in being part of this city.”

Known since the 1950s as purveyors of high-quality home appliances and televisions, Dewey’s has served more than five generations of South Orange County customers. Founded by the late Don Dewey, the business was sold to Alex Haynes, Sr. in 1968 and was then purchased by Alex Haynes, Jr. from his father in 1995. “Don Dewey was an entrepreneur,” Haynes Jr. says. “One of the pioneers in town. He used to stop in the store quite a bit and still took the patriarch ownership title for Dewey’s. He took pride in the company even after it had been sold.” In 2000, Alex served as President of the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce, and has long been an active member of the community.

The 68th Annual Fiesta Music Festival Celebrates the City—and Gives Back Are you ready for a good time? The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce will host this year’s 68th annual Fiesta Music Festival on Sunday, Aug. 13, in the downtown district on Avenida Del Mar. Since 1953, the free, family-friendly event has been a summer bash for residents and those from nearby cities to join together in celebrating the town. It also functions as a place for nonprofits and businesses to raise funds for supporting the community throughout the year. In keeping with tradition, Avenida Del Mar will be closed to traffic to accommodate an array of booths for nonprofits, eateries and games, as well as contests, arts and crafts vendors, business expos, a kiddy area for children and three stages for live entertainment. Some key highlights include: FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES: Families with children are encouraged to arrive earlier in the day to take advantage of the youth activities, which will mainly take place on the stage near the library.

BIKES AND E-BIKES: As of last year, the Chamber began partnering with the city and local bike companies to implement the Fiesta Bike Corral, which is essentially a large blocked-off area in front of the Community Center designated for bicycle and e-bike parking.

BEVERAGES AND FOOD: Scattered up and down Del Mar will be five beverage stations, featuring beer and seltzers sponsored by Left Coast Brewing Company, as well as water and sodas, to sip on while enjoying the music. Numerous food options can be found up and down Del Mar. CHARITY SUPPORT: Of the Chamber’s roughly 40 nonprofit members, a large majority

Put on Your Fancy Shoes for a Fun Night of Food and Wine Tasting Admit it, you need an excuse to pull out the dusty suit or unworn cocktail dress from the back of your closet this year. Lucky for you, the annual Taste of San Clemente will commence in November; consider this your formal invitation. The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce will host the annual food and wine tasting event for those who are 21 and older on Friday, Nov. 3, from 6-10 p.m. at Casino San Clemente. For more than 30 years, the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce has hosted the annual event, which includes music and dancing, live entertainment and a silent auction with a wide variety of baskets and gifts. According to Chamber of Commerce Director of Operations Arlen Flores, the event allows an opportunity for the Chamber’s members in the restaurant and beverage industries to gain exposure for their establishments. Particularly, members from the beverage industry always play a role—whether

SUGAR BLOSSOM BAKE SHOP it is a distillery, brewery or wine bar. Each year, the event provides a space for them to get in front of a lot of people, in turn bringing in more revenue throughout the year. Aside from food and beverage items, a silent auction is held throughout the night, with dozens of donations from small local businesses. For the winners, gifts are beautifully wrapped, which is a nice feature right before the holidays. The Chamber strives to surprise guests with a different

entertainment feature each year—in the past the event has featured a magician as well as dancers. As a complimentary gift, each guest will receive a wine glass or beer mug to commemorate the evening. Guests are encouraged to utilize local ride services to and from the event. For those who plan to drive themselves, paid parking will be available for a nominal fee in the North Beach parking lot, across from the Casino.

For brunch with a view, there are two longtime local favorites by the pier for relaxing and rejuvenation. Fisherman’s Restaurant and Bar, situated at the base of the pier, offers its menu from 8-11 a.m., Monday through Saturday, with extended brunch hours until 2 p.m. on Sunday. Taking Aim on Organic Waste As a coastal community, San Clemente’s businesses play a huge role in the city’s effort to recycle its commercial waste. San Clemente’s Chamber of Commerce is committed to working alongside the City, CR&R and its

member businesses to meet the objectives of SB 1383, and encourages everyone to participate. Part of that effort is an ongoing education process by CR&R for San Clemente businesses regarding California’s recycling law, Senate Bill 1383, which has two key objectives: reduce the amount of organic waste disposed of in landfills and reducing disposed edible food and redirecting that food to people in need. Historical Walking Tour The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the San Clemente Historical Society, hopes to deliver a one-of-a-kind walking tour for residents and visitors to enjoy. Hop on the Trolley

Since 2017, San Clemente’s free trolley has been a huge hit for businesses, shoppers and visitors alike. Initially offering two service lines: a Downtown Red Line and a North San Clemente Blue Line, locals and visitors alike love using the trolley to visit San Clemente beaches, restaurants and businesses. A third line-The Green Line--is being piloted in Spring 2023 on weekends starting March 11-May 21 and will travel the length of El Camino Real going as far south as San Clemente State Beach. This nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization provides social activities, in-home services and educational programs for locals who are 55 and older who are living at home or “aging in place.” Membership (less than $1 per day) provides for an array of services and activities, including things such as visits to museums, organized athletic activities, volunteer opportunities and even help at home with gardening, computer assistance, pet care and food preparation. “We are a small, local nonprofit that provides services to the seniors of San Clemente,” says Executive Director Jessica Reiter-Flax. “We are 100% volunteer-driven—our main services include transportation to and from doctor’s appointments, run errands for them, help them around the house, dog walking—really anything that makes their lives a little bit easier and to maintain their independence.” For more info or to volunteer, call 949.441.1348 or visit scvillage.org.
