Five things San Clemente should know this week

Artist, Activists Plan Aerial Photo at Trail 6, South of SONGS

THE LATEST: Aerial photographer John Quigley and members of the Acjachemen Nation will join together on Saturday, June 9 at Trail 6, just south of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) to take a photo that will depict one of the native people’s symbols, a “star man,” using people to outline the figure, Quigley said.

Quigley, who goes by the art tag “Spectral Q,” has taken photos all over the world, drawing attention to the earth’s resources and protected environments. He once took a photo on a melting portion of the Artic Ocean of Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man where the outline of the man could be seen over the melting portions. He’s also done work in Paris (pictured) in front of the Eiffel Tower.

“We’re going to have hundreds of people, mostly from the Acjachemen Nation, and it’s an honoring of their ancestors,” Quigley said. “They’re going to lay down some wisdom for what they see as the best future for this region from SONGS and San Clemente, what they want from political leaders. I’ll be creating that (image) large-scale with people, and we’ll photograph from the bluffs.”

The event is meant to bring awareness to the natural resources in the surrounding area and the concerns the Acjachemen have regarding the area.

Around Trail 6 and SONGS, many leaders have worked with and demanded that the Department of the Navy return the land at San Mateo Campground and nearby areas to the native people, as it was once the fertile crescent of the Acjachemen and many artifacts have been found there. They also have concerns regarding environmental impacts.

“I know they have great concerns about the way in which the (nuclear) waste is being stored (at SONGS), and I’m sure they’ll make statements about that,” Quigley said.

Portions of the area that’s owned by the Navy were leased to the California State Parks for 40 years, but that agreement ends in 2021, with negotiations ongoing to renew.

Baptiste Brothers Continue Fight over Miramar Theater THE LATEST: Craig Baptiste and his brother, Barry, are continuing their fight to own the Miramar Theater (now called the Miramar Event Center) through a continuing Orange County court cases.

This civil lawsuit case has been ongoing since 2009, and Craig said he doesn’t see it ending anytime soon.

“We intend to fight this the entire way.

We’re not going anywhere,” Craig told the San Clemente Times during a recent interview.

The company Mach-1 Autogroup, which the brothers own, was tied up in a bankruptcy case as well as a complaint against the former owner of Auto Orange II, Marc Spizzirri, who also is a partner in the El Camino Real Estate Holdings, LLC, the current owner of the Miramar.

In 2013, a ruling was made in favor of Mach-1 regarding money that was owed and Craig said they assumed as part of payment that was owed to him the Miramar should have been part of that settlement.

Since then, the property has continued to be disputed, but El Camino Real Estate Holdings has continued with the project as business as usual. The LLC was able to

get approval from the city of San Clemente and the California Coastal Commission in 2017 for restaurant services in the old bowling alley appendage, an outdoor bar and to renovate the theater portion for an event center.

Through court hearings, however, a judge put a stop to all development of the property in 2017 so that certain matters could be resolved in the bankruptcy cases.

In March, the lis pendens (a judge order to stop all work) was lifted and the operators of the Miramar could go forward with developing what had been approved by San Clemente City Council and the Coastal Commission.

The ownership is the only thing that continues to be disputed between the two parties.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Baptistes and Mach-1 Autogroup intend to continue the fight and hope to get a ruling that solidifies the decision in their favor in February. A mandatory settlement hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 25 and a jury trial is set for Feb. 25. —EH

Toll Road Fight Spills Over into OCTA Meeting THE LATEST: The question of what to do with The Toll Roads reached an inescapable intersection among Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) board directors on May 25: whether to support an Assembly bill that would disarm the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) or not.

AB 382 has been supported by many people in San Clemente. On June 3, people

associated with the grassroots organization “Not My Toll Road” hosted a petition signature gathering at the Farmers Market on Avenida Del Mar. A resolution was put on the OCTA May 25 agenda meeting asking the board to support the bill or not.

Mike Kraman, the CEO of the TCA, said his organization has considered a range of alternatives as required by the California Natural Resources Agency and National Environmental Policy Act regarding proposed toll roads through San Clemente, some of which would go directly through neighborhoods in San Clemente, and is willing to work with OCTA through every step of the process. He referenced the forums and outreach programs that began in 2015.

“I know OCTA feels this process is taking too long and that many of the ideas could or should have been dismissed much earlier,” Kraman said during the May 25 meeting. “We at TCA welcome the opportunity to build on the success the county has enjoyed by strengthening our relationship with OCTA.” Kraman added that he understood this can be easier said than done.

“But I believe (we) have the desire and the talent working with our governing boards to make this happen,” he said.

Dan Bane, a San Clemente-based environmental attorney, said the state code that governs the TCA currently prohibits the toll roads from being constructed in a number of places.

“They can’t build anywhere to the east and south of San Clemente. That’s important because it now fancies itself as a regional transportation agency,” Bane said.

“This bill makes it clear that it’s OCTA responsibility,” Bane said.

San Clemente resident Mark McGuire asked the board to support the bill, adding that the TCA has “veered out of its lane,” as it was tasked with constructing 60 miles of roads and has since embellished its intent.

Orange County Supervisor Shawn Nelson, who sits on the OCTA board, was irritated by the historical ramifications of the TCA, citing the 20 years its been working on traffic alleviation by way of proposing toll roads that never got built.

San Clemente City Council member Lori Donchak reiterated that the scoping meetings the TCA hosted between 2015 and 2017 did not reflect the best interest of the people of San Clemente.

Supervisor Lisa Bartlett, current chair of the OCTA, has defended the TCA’s decisions since the new toll road proposals began. Bartlett represents San Clemente’s district, but at least two of her fellow supervisors have—at least in part—opposed some of the ideas of the TCA. Supervisor Todd Spitzer recently opposed Idea 14 (the one that goes right through the city), and Nelson said he would vote in favor of supporting the bill.

The OCTA board did not render a vote in support of the Assembly bill.

WHAT’S NEXT: AB 382 is currently in the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee, as it already passed the Assembly in 2017 under different amendments. California Legislature committee hearings in the Senate were scheduled to resume on June 4, but the bill has not yet been heard by the committee. —EH

Federal Judge Orders Settlement of Homeless Shelter Locations by June 13 THE LATEST: Sites for homeless shelter locations, “S.I.T.E.S.,” as spelled out in emphasis by Federal Judge David O. Carter, must be determined by Wednesday, June 13 per his order made during a status conference on May 25.

“The judge wanted three sites, or goodfaith progress, identified,” said Leon Page, the attorney and legal counsel for Orange County. “We are hoping that the cities and the southern part of the county can help us and collaborate with the county for a feasible location for a low-barrier emergency homeless shelter. Low-barrier shelters would allow law enforcement to drop someone off.”

If there is a regional low-barrier shelter, Page said, then the police can tell someone to move on from a location if they’re loitering or sleeping illegally or take them to a shelter for the night. He Page 4

said it gives law enforcement and the city of San Clemente options to enforce its anti-camping laws. He said without this, law enforcement has a difficult enforcement process.

“There is an opportunity to give these folks security and what they need,” Page said. “Judge Carter is looking for three sites and specifically asked for north, central and south (locations). I recognize the South County cities contribute a small portion of the homeless, but it is within their interest to enforce those quality-of-life laws and identify a solution for temporary shelter.”

There’s a possibility Carter could limit the power cities have to enforce anticamping and other laws that dissuade homeless people from staying in fire-risk canyons and other areas, if the cities do not comply with the order by June 13.

WHAT’S NEXT: Recently, an Orange County Grand Jury report criticized the county’s handling of the homeless issues in the document titled “Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way: Housing Orange County’s Chronically Homeless.” The report recommended the county and cities should develop a permanent supportive housing plan that’s proportionate to all cities as well as establishing some kind of homeless joint powers authority.

Camp Pendleton Water Report Shows No Fecal Matter Found, but Bacteria Exists THE LATEST: Reports from Camp Pendleton recently found there is no fecal matter in its water, but there were trace amounts of other bacteria.

“The installation routinely monitors for drinking water contaminants,” said Capt. Luke Weaver of the Marine Corps Installation West communications office.

“We test weekly at a minimum. Fortynine samples were taken in the southern water system to test for the presence of coliform bacteria during April. Of those samples, 6.1 percent (3 of 49) showed the presence of total coliform bacteria. The standard is that no more than 5 percent of the total number of samples collected per month test positive for that bacteria.”

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found multiple violations in late September in the base’s water system that included a myriad of problems.

“The drinking water is safe and compliant,” Weaver said following the testing results.

California Primary Election Semi-Official Results See how the Nov. 6 general election will shape up after June 5; Results updated online

t was an interesting night for Californians, as many of the elections for the state’s primary races were closely watched around the nation.

Democrats in Southern California have been trying to send a “blue wave” to Congress and the Senate against a vast number of GOP-held seats, but in the 49th Congressional District primary election— which includes San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano—it was longtime tax-fighter Diane Harkey, a Republican from Dana Point, who came out on top.

It was a bit of a surprise, as three Democrats gridlocked between 4 percentage points from second to fourth. As of Wednesday morning, San Juan Capistrano’s Mike Levin had the upper hand with 17.1 percent of the vote, Del Mar’s Sara Jacobs with 15.1 percent and San Clemente’s Doug Applegate with 13.2 percent.

It was Applegate who almost unseated longtime republican Rep. Darrell Issa, who had been in Congress for nearly 20 years.

Harkey went on a massive advertising campaign weeks before the election, calling herself the tax-fighting candidate and promising to reform what she said are burdensome tax policies at the federal level.

Levin, a former chair of the Orange County Democratic Party, has been campaigning since the end of the 2016 election on the back of making it easier and more attractive for industries to change

to alternative energy as well as making changes to access higher education.

Jacobs would be the youngest woman to be elected to Congress, at age 29, and has advocated for women’s access to health care, working to create jobs and more affordable housing.

Applegate, the only San Clemente candidate in the race, lost to Issa in the last election and is hoping to make his way back into the fray.

In other elections, District Attorney Tony Rackauckas is defending his seat by a narrow margin against challenger Todd Spitzer, who came in second and will face him in November. The two were well ahead of Democrats Brett Murdock and Lenore Albert-Sheridan. This particular race has drawn interest, as Rackauckas has been the Orange County District Attorney since 1998 and had a falling out with Spitzer when the two worked together at the DA’s office.

Assemblyman Bill Brough, R-73, had almost half the votes to retain his seat for a fourth term. Brough has been heavily involved in issues related to San Clemente, particularly in 2016 when he and State Sen. Patricia Bates, R-36, fought for laws that would amend satellite hospital requirements in order to facilitate the needs of the city’s only emergency room. Their bills failed in committees later on that session.

San Clemente’s Hannah Carter Heads to Next Sea Scout Challenge Hannah Carter, a sophomore at San Clemente High School, was named Western Region boatswain for Sea Scouts during Memorial Day weekend. Carter’s territory extends from Texas to the Pacific Northwest and includes Alaska and Hawaii.

A boatswain is typically in charge of a ship’s crews and supplies.

“My focus for my one-year term is to plant new ships, increase recruitment and widen our presence on social media,” Carter said in a press release.

In July, Hannah traveled to Galveston, Texas for the biennial William I. Koch International Sea Scout Cup where, as skipper of her CFJ sailboat, she earned a berth with her first-place finish at the Jim McElroy qualifier. This is Hannah’s second Koch Cup, as she placed mid-fleet in the top 20 competitors in 2016 as crew.

In August, Carter will be one of a select few Sea Scouts invited to sail aboard the United States Coast Guard Barque EAGLE for seven days.

In between these events, she will attend three weeks at Oakcliff Sailing Center in Oyster Bay, New York, focused on match racing and improving her boat-handling skills.

“My goal is to become a top female match racing skipper,” Carter said. “I want to be ready to crush the fall match racing regattas.”

TLC Preschool Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary TLC Preschool is celebrating its 10-year milestone of providing “spiritual-based education,” according to a press release.

“This ‘hands-on’ learning platform has grown from teaching one small class of seven to over 500 students passing through our program,” the press release stated.

SCARWF Hosts Baby Shower for Expectant Mothers at Camp Pendleton San Clemente Area Republican Women Federated (SCARWF) held their annual baby shower for 25 expectant mothers at the Deluz Family Housing at Camp Pendleton Marine Base on May 17. Every mother received a layette containing various items, such as hooded towels, baby bottles, bibs, swaddle blankets, toys, baby clothes, plus a handknitted blanket and baby caps. They also received a supply of diapers. Raffles were held for the following items: two strollers, baby crib, two porta cribs, two baby swings, two bounce chairs, a car seat and many additional large gift baskets.

Donations Now Accepted for Deployed 2/4 Marines The Heritage of San Clemente Foundation is now accepting donated items for the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines who are deployed abroad. Shoring Up Marine Safety Headquarters

I

n the last fiscal year, San Clemente Lifeguards rescued 1,521 swimmers in distress, warned 22,897 visitors of dangerous ocean conditions, performed 1,439 medical aids and finished the year with no drownings. This is a distinguished report card. In fact, for a community that hosts more than 2 million beach visitors annually, this is nothing short of impressive.

So, it’s no surprise that City Council unanimously supported a project to rehabilitate lifeguard headquarters as part of the annual budget process. Built in 1968 and well-known for its 40-foot clock tower, the 50-year-old building is the consistent target of relentless marine conditions. Wear and tear is so severe that initial rehabilitation options explored moving lifeguard headquarters away from the tidelines. Possible locations included across the tracks on the inland side of the Pier Bowl, as well as various beach-

side locations much closer to the beach trail, at T-Street or North Beach. Part of the decision process concerned the role of the California Coastal Commission.

Moving headquarters from its existing footprint would add state approvals—and therefore time and money—to the process.

An even more significant consideration concerned potentially bad impacts on safety operations. Marine safety relies on quick response. Proximity to the ocean is essential to quick response. For these reasons, rehabilitation at the current location makes the most sense.

City Council allocated $1.2 million for the lifeguard headquarters repair. Chief merits of the project are strengthened concrete support beams and pilings and a new metal sheet pile wall (with concrete cap) to protect the building and foundation from wave damage and sand erosion. According to San Clemente’s Public Works Director Tom Bonigut, the building hasn’t had significant attention since 1986. He estimates improvements to add at least 10 years to the life of this iconic city-owned building.

Construction is anticipated to kick off in September. Expect no interruption in services, as the Marine Safety Division

is staffed from 8 a.m. to dusk 365 days a year, with the five lifeguard towers staffed as needed during the off-season. Even the popular beach web-camera, which is installed on the clock-tower and streams on www.san-clemente.org will be operational.

Finally, as we enter the summer season, some important reminders on beach safety. Always swim near a lifeguard and always swim with a buddy. Obey posted warnings. If you surf, leash your board, be courteous on the waves, and avoid twilight hours. It’s also a good idea to enroll your kids in San Clemente’s outstanding Junior Lifeguard program. Letters to the Editor TOLL ROAD MONEY GOING DOWN THE DRAIN EVA O’KEEFE, San Clemente

In the last few months, several people in the community have called out the abuses of the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA). Thank you to OC Board of Supervisors member Shawn Nelson, who expressed his utter dissatisfaction with the TCA. While at the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) Board Meeting, he indicated that the TCA has spent $210 million in the last 20 years on “advocacy.” My question is what are they advocating? To me that is “code” for boondoggle—golf, sponsorships, millions spent on public relations firms, and let’s not forget the free honey baked ham for the holidays. The next time you see a TCA advertisement in the Orange County Register or sponsorship at your local city festival,

just remember that they’re using your tax dollars in the form of development fees, bailouts and Caltrans, which maintains the Toll Roads.

Thank you also to Dan Bane for so brilliantly elaborating why the TCA needs to be abolished. And thank you Assemblyman Rocky Chavez for introducing AB 382, which defunds the wasteful and corrupt TCA. The TCA hasn’t built a road in 22 years, which makes them glorified toll-booth operators. And like toll-booth operators, they are just as obsolete.

As for our Supervisor Lisa Bartlett—she continues to be the biggest cheerleader out there for the TCA and its wasteful spending and votes every time against her constituents.

TCA IS GREATLY OVERREACHING ITS AUTHORITY MICHELLE SCHUMACHER, San Clemente

One has to wonder how and why the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) is so far off its course thinking they can become the planners for regional mobility after using Orange County residents for the last 20 years. The TCA was to build

for only local area benefit. The TCA has collected billions of dollars in development fees, or a tax from Orange County residents and businesses. Development fees are collected any time a home or commercial space is constructed or remodeled, collected by the city, then passed along to the TCA. Why, when the TCA has not constructed anything in the past 20 years, is it allowed to still collect these development fees?

Caltrans maintains the toll roads, another way our tax dollars are used by the toll roads. In addition, several areas on the toll roads had problems when initially built and Caltrans and U.S. taxpayers had to pick up the tab. Ironically, the TCA claims often they do not use taxpayer dollars. The TCA is also the recipient of a $1.1 billion bailout when they were going to go bankrupt and had junk bonds not so long ago.

We already pay dearly for transportation in in California, and in Orange County we have the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and CalTrans. Why is the TCA a duplicative failed experiment allowed to continue? The 73 was supposed to be free two years ago; instead, due to failure to pay down its bonds, the TCA extended the period out many more years. www.sanclementetimes.com

It is a rough life for those who have had to worry for over a year about their homes, businesses and children’s schools that are under attack, but since the TCA actively sponsors golf tournaments, galas and award banquets to say what a great job they’re doing, they are deaf to the concerns of poor soil not able to handle such construction and the laws about how close you can have a toll road to a school.

The TCA in 2015 made neighborhoods and residents the last stakeholder on the list with their buddies companies above.

Enough is enough, it is time to strip the TCA of development fee collection powers and eminent domain powers.

MICROFIBER: NOT A MICRO PROBLEM FOR OUR OCEAN HOIYIN IP, Dana Point

Friday, June 8 is World Oceans Day. Last week, Sacramento considered several bills to reduce plastic pollution in the ocean.

AB 2379 addresses the biggest but leastknown problem. It requires clothing made from fabric that is composed of more than 50 percent synthetic material with a warning in the label, “This garment sheds plastic microfibers when washed, which contributes to marine plastic pollution.”

Unfortunately, the bill became inactive.

According to Ocean Conservancy, “Microfibers have become one of the most commonly detected types of microplastic debris in water samples, found in headwater streams, rivers, soils, lakes, sediments, ocean water, the deep sea, arctic sea ice, seafood, table salt and, most recently, public drinking water. Such widespread exposure raises concerns about potential effects to wildlife and human health.”

From workout clothes to fleece blankets, who doesn’t have some items made of synthetic material? What can individuals do until there’s a bigger and broader solution?

• Try not to buy textile made of synthetic material, use and wash only when Page 11

needed.

• Hand-wash if possible. Machine-wash with a shorter cycle and cold water, run a full load to reduce friction between the clothes, which would release more fibers. or, air-dry.

• Use a Guppyfriend washing bag that captures the microfibers released. (Available at Patagonia for $30).

ext restaurant up—that’s how swiftly Thai Dara 2 came into the old location of Little Thai Hut just a couple of months ago.

Thai Dara has already established itself as a formidable Thai restaurant in Dana Point, and its sequel in San Clemente has not disappointed.

That said, when trying a place that has just opened, sometimes it’s best to go with what you know and venture into something a little more interesting next time (I’ll be back, spicy shrimp and scallops).

This week, a hearty sampling of the orange

peel chicken was in order. No surprises: the outer shells were crispy but easy to penetrate, as the zesty encapsulation gave way to the steamy chicken.

This is a dish that can easily be shared, as the mountain of chicken was consumed only to the base before having to rest for dinner and try for the summit later.

If you’re really hungry, accompany the orange chicken with some of Thai Dara 2’s spring rolls.

At the Movies: ‘On Chesil Beach’ Has Too Much Sap

aoirse Ronan is rightly considered one of the best actresses of her generation—from her impressive skills in mimicking dialects to being able to deliver both comedy and drama.

She received her first Oscar nomination at age 14 for Joe Wright’s period romance Atonement (2007) then two more for Brooklyn (2015) and Lady Bird (2017). Her new movie, On Chesil Beach, is her second adaptation from Atonement author Ian McEwan.

In 1962 England, Florence Ponting (Ronan) is a music student with a love for classical music and the violin. She comes from an uptight, conservative family that doesn’t understand why she’s dating Edward Mayhew (Billy Howle). Edward is from a middle-class family with a mentally disturbed mother (Anne-Marie Duff) and majoring in history at college. The two hit it off right away as a couple, only to discover on their wedding night that they might not be physically ready for each other.

after a career of directing stage plays, and adapted by McEwan himself. Ronan is one of those actors who fortunately can still bring a solid performance to mediocre material, which is unfortunately what we have here. Cooke’s direction is fairly basic and obviously theatre-trained, and the execution of the characters’ issues come off as too melodramatic in a bad way. Howle, while technically fine with his lines, doesn’t have much of a screen presence and is rather forgettable. Unless you’re a huge fan of Ronan or McEwan, there’s no hurry to see this one. Summer Days, Just Sittin’ Around, but When the Sun Goes Down...

J

une is filled with celebrating transitions, whether your children are finishing middle school, high school or college. I fondly remember the joy of encouraging my children as they embarked on the next steps in their lives. In part, some of this happiness came from the shift into summer mode and finding the time to reconnect with family and friends over lazy afternoons at the beach.

Hopefully, summer allows for more sleep and a slower pace for the whole family. While unstructured time with peers is important, so is the need to remain vigilant, as the weeks between Memorial Day and Labor Day can be dangerous for teens in regard to driving and risky behaviors. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) reports traffic fatalities increase by 50 teen deaths per month nationwide during the summer. Youth experimentation with alcohol, tobacco and illegal substances also increases dramatically over the summer.

As a parent of teens, I was also ready to take the summer off, however I encourage parents of adolescents to help their children be prepared for some of the challenging decisions that come up in the

summer months while still having a good time.

The following are some ways to help teens have a safe summer.

Reminding youth about their responsibilities as part of a family may help teens balance their free time and can lower parental frustrations. If they know they must unload the dishwasher and walk the dog before they can go to the beach, the job gets done and you do not have to nag later in the day. Families usually are happier if they try to keep the school year rules in place. Curfews are still important, and teens should be required to check in several times during the day.

If their plans change, require a check-in so you know in detail the next activity on their agenda.

Consider forming a partnership with other families. This is especially valuable for taking groups of kids on outings WELLNESS AND away from San Clemente.

PREVENTION Encourage the buddy

Try to keep communication open. Use the slower summer months to bring up the trickier topics like substance abuse, dating, sexual activities, suicide and friendships. Try to listen and not to lecture. Your views are very important to your teen and a major influence on their behavior, even when you think they are not hearing you.

Consider limiting screen time—including social media. Video gaming and hours of YouTube can easily take over a teen’s life in the summer months. Plan screenuse limits before school lets out so that expectations are clear. Face-to-face social engagement and outdoor exercise is key to mental health and wellness. Music to the Pier San Clemente High, Shorecliffs Middle school jazz ensemble performs at the Pier

A

rite of passage for jazz students at San Clemente High School and Shorecliffs Middle School was preserved due to the efforts of those pupils and their parents.

Before the ensemble performed on May 31 at the San Clemente Pier, which drew dozens of attendees, the city of San Clemente had suggested moving the jazz performances and breaking them up into small quartets at the Market at North Beach on a Wednesday.

It sounds like a pretty hip idea, but there’s something about performing at the Pier that the students and their parents didn’t want to let go.

About two weeks before the scheduled performance, parents organized meetings and even circulated a petition for the performance, eventually succeeding in convincing city officials to return the venue.

Saxophone riffs and the big-band swing music caromed off the bluffs and carried across the beach as the students and band director closed their school year with the sunset. SC

Stier Sets Record at State

San Clemente resident and Saddleback Valley Christian junior Kendall Stier broke her own state record and won the girls shot put wheelchair title at the CIF State Track and Field Championships on Friday, June 1 at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

On her fifth attempt, Stier posted a mark of 12 feet, 6.25 inches to win the state title and clobber her previous state record.

Stier, who has cerebral palsy, set the record in 2016 with a throw of 11 feet, three inches, which is a full one foot, three inches shorter than her latest mark.

Surf Soccer Wins Liverpool Cup

The San Clemente Surf B2004 team won the Liverpool Cup tournament championships last weekend in San Diego.

On Saturday, June 2, the Surf opened with a scoreless draw and posted a shutout win over Scripps Ranch United, 3-0. On

Weber Named State Player of the Year San Clemente senior Tristan Weber was announced as the Gatorade California Boys Soccer Player of the Year on Wednesday, June 6.

Weber scored 15 goals and 22 assists and was named the South Coast League MVP this season. San Clemente went 19-66 this season and advanced to the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals and the CIF Southern California Division 1 Regional final.

The Gatorade award recognizes athletic excellence as well as academic and character marks. Weber maintained a 3.33 GPA and has volunteered in community-beautification projects and as a youth soccer

Sunday, June 3, the Surf closed group play with another shutout win, 2-0, over Sporting SD. In the championship match on Sunday afternoon, the Surf allowed their first goal of the tournament but battled into double overtime against Matrix La Mesa. The Surf found the goal they needed to take the title.

Upcoming Pole Vault Camp

San Clemente High School pole vault coaches Brad Skovbo and Brian Rother are hosting the Summer Pole Vault Fun camp on Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16. Both days’ camps begin at 3 p.m.

Male and female youths in the Capistrano Unified School District are eligible to come out for an afternoon of healthy,

exciting and rewarding motor challenges from Skovbo and Rother’s combined 70 years of coaching experience.

Each session is approximately two hours and will highlight sprint training, high bar gymnastics, weight training and pole vaulting progressions.

Pak Finishes Fourth at State Golf

Junior golfer Alex Pak shot an even-par 71 to tie for fourth place at the CIF State Boys Golf Championship on Wednesday, June 30 at San Gabriel Country Club.

Pak shot four birdies in the round, including three of four on holes one, two and four. He finished three shots behind the leader, Tyler Guo of Crean Lutheran, after being unable to overcome an early double bogey.

Pak finished tied with six other golfers in fourth place.

Shippy Competes at State Track

Senior sprinter and jumper Jack Shippy advanced to the CIF State Track and Field Championships but did not advance out of the preliminaries on Friday, June 1 at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

Shippy finished 13th in the 100-meter dash and 26th in the long jump.

New exhibit, Ohana Gala at the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center honors contributions of four women who made the sport of surfing

I

n 1905, a surfboard belonging to Hawaiian Princess Kananmuna was found in a burial cave in Ho’okena on the Big Island. Believed to be carved in the 1600s, to date, it’s the oldest papa he’e nalu (surfboard) ever found. The artifact confirms that women were sliding waves alongside their male counterparts back when William Shakespeare was scribbling sonnets and Galileo was setting his sights on the stars.

Women have forever been intertwined in the cultural fabric and evolution of the sport of surfing—they just haven’t always been as celebrated like as men they rode alongside. To set the record straight, the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center (SHACC) has just launched its new exhibit, “Women Making Waves.” Celebrating four very pivotal female surfers—Joyce Hoffman, Rell Sunn, Lisa Andersen and Stephanie Gilmore—the exhibit is a deep dive into the life and times of a quartet of women who advanced the sport of surfing in their own unique ways.

Throughout the 1960s, Hoffman, who grew up on Beach Road in Capistrano Beach, dominated women’s surfing. Winning three U.S. surfing championships in a row and a fourth title in 1971, it wasn’t just the competitive accolades that cemented her legacy. Hoffman tackled notorious bigwave breaks such as Banzai Pipeline and Sunset Beach on Oahu’s North Shore.

Hoffman also famously enjoyed a sponsorship deal with sports-car company Triumph. They went so far as to make sure that whatever country Hoffman was in there was a Spitfire convertible with her Hobie Surfboard sticking out the back. They had them shipped all over the globe for her.

No other surfer, male or female, past or present, has enjoyed that kind of perk.

Meanwhile, Sunn was known as the Queen of Makaha, and over the course of her lifetime, became one of the most influential and instrumental Hawaiian surfers San Clemente Times June 7–13, 2018

of the modern era. In addition to carving out a name for herself via competitive successes in the late 1960s and 1970s, in 1976, Sunn hosted her first menehune contest, collecting prizes and trophies for island youth with few opportunities. She took it upon herself to help guide and mentor upand-coming youth from the hard-scrabble west side, including future world champion Sunny Garcia and Pipeline specialist Johnny-Boy Gomes. In 1983, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and lost her fight against the disease in 1998.

In the 1990s, Andersen smashed the gender barrier on the ASP World Tour (now the WSL Championship Tour). Born in New York and raised in Florida, after enduring a challenging childhood she ran away from home when she was 16 years old, landing in Huntington Beach with nothing more than some personal items and a surfboard. Her early days on the West Coast were challenging, but she persevered and in 1987 won the National Scholastic Surfing Association national title. She was named ASP Rookie of the Year the same year.

Starting in 1994, Andersen claimed four consecutive world titles. She also became the cornerstone of women’s surf-wear brand, Roxy. She was named as one of the 100 Greatest Sportswomen of the Century

by Sports Illustrated for Women and was also named the 1998 Female Athlete of the Year by Conde Nast Sports for Women magazine. Andersen stepped away from full-time competition in 2001 due to nagging back issues and to raise her family.

Today, she lives in San Clemente and continues to be involved with Roxy, and she just got a new puppy.

Claiming her first world title as a rookie on the WSL Championship Tour in 2007, for over a decade Gilmore has been a driving force in the evolution of women’s

surfing. To date, she has amassed 29 world tour victories (two of them coming in 2018) and six world titles. She was inducted into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame in 2010 and received the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year award the same year. She’s also won ESPN’s ESPY award in 2011 and 2013 for Best Female Action Sports Athlete. Gilmore is currently ranked number one on the WSL Championship Tour. She has her sights set on a record-tying seventh world title in 2018.

Without question, this list could go on thanks to the contributions that so many women have made to surfing over the past century, and SHACC has future plans to honor more of them. For now, Hoffman, Sunn, Andersen and Gilmore are leading the charge.

Later this month, SHACC will host its annual Ohana Gala honoring Women Making Waves. The gala is a fundraiser to help preserve and share the history and culture of surfing; it will take place at The Ranch at Laguna Beach, located at 31106 Coast Hwy., Laguna Beach, on Friday, June 22. t’s pretty impressive to already have five years of surfing under your belt at the ripe old age of 8, but Finn McCarty was born into this life. Pushed into his first waves by his old man, Rob, when he was three, McCarty’s keeping the family vibes alive.

A second-grader at Concordia Elementary School, McCarty lists his favorite spots as San Onofre and Lowers, although you may catch him owning the inside at Cottons in front of the family home.

“What inspires me is surfing with my friends and learning new things about the ocean,” he said. “The waves are always different, and you have a chance to catch the best wave of your life.”

As serious as McCarty is about surfing, it’s pretty clear the kid has a heck of a sense of humor. When asked who he most looks up to in the sport he says, “My dad because he’s taller than me.”

He’s got a point there. To be fair, he also appreciates his father’s acumen in the water because he “always teachers me to surf and never gives up.”

And as for his future in the sport, McCarty’s playing the long game. When we asked him where he sees surfing taking him in the next 10 years, he says, “Surfing will help me to get a scholarship to college on my way to the Olympics.” SC
