“This is the first big thing we’ve been able to do,” said Jim Nielsen, a member of the group.

Nielsen said the money goes to the painting of the Pier, and an anonymous donor gave $50,000 to $60,000 worth of labor for the job.

“Now we’re looking at significant things, if we can get them rolling,” Nielsen said.

“We’ve moved on to better cleaning and figuring out how to clean the filth at the end of the Pier.”

WHAT’S NEXT: Nielsen said the organization is looking to put on an event sometime in June to showcase to potential “major sponsors” as well as continue to work with local design business RSM Design.

San Clemente Man Arrested for Providing Drugs to a Minor, Sexual Battery THE LATEST: Christian Reed, 50, of San Clemente pleaded “not guilty” to nine charges that consisted of sexual battery on a child by molestation and providing the child with illegal drugs during his arraignment hearing on Friday, May 5, in Orange County Superior Court.

The complaint alleges Reed, sometime between Oct. 1, 2016 and March 22, touched a minor inappropriately and illegally multiple times and that he also committed annoyance and molestation of a minor, all of which are misdemeanors.

Reed was also charged with two felony counts of selling marijuana and alprazolam to a minor. Alprazolam is used to treat chemical imbalances for people with anxiety. Alprazolam is found in the brands Xanax and Niravam.

causing severe effects on personal judgment and health, according to the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids.

“These drugs slow normal brain function, which may result in slurred speech, shallow breathing, sluggishness, fatigue, disorientation and lack of coordination or dilated pupils,” the organization’s website stated. “Higher doses cause impaired memory, judgment and coordination; irritability; paranoia; and thoughts of suicide.”

Investigators from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Victims Detail (SVD) and the Orange County Child Exploitation Task Force (OCCETF) arrested Reed on Thursday, May 4, on suspicion of sexually abusing a boy under the age of 18 and “furnishing the minor with marijuana and controlled substances,” according to a press release distributed the same day.

In the press release, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department stated investigators have reason to believe that there are more victims of Reed’s alleged behavior.

Reed has been a lifelong resident of San Clemente, residing in the city for almost 50 years, the release stated. Investigators believe he has had inappropriate contact with teenage boys since the 1980s.

“He’s never been arrested and doesn’t have a record,” Lt. Lane Lagaret told the San Clemente Times shortly after the release was distributed. “A report taken in 2007 had similar allegations that couldn’t be proven, so no charges were filed.

Based on that report, there was information that said there were others.”

Lagaret said Reed has been unemployed since the mid-2000s and worked random jobs for a while. Lagaret said Reed did not work in a capacity where he supervised children.

“In late March 2017, an investigator with the OCSD Special Victims Detail assigned to the Orange County Child Exploitation Task Force was contacted regarding a male juvenile victim who was having inappropriate conversations with a male online,” the release stated. “An

investigation was initiated, and on March 24, SVD and OCCETF served a search warrant at the San Clemente residence of 50-year-old Christian Reed.”

Lagaret said officers had enough evidence to make an arrest and are now reaching out to see if there are additional victims.

Reed’s first preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 15 in Orange County Superior Court.

Casa Romantica Impact Report Shows Major Growth in Five Years THE LATEST: Casa Romantica recently published a shining impact report of its last five years operating in San Clemente.

The report stated participation at event attendance, membership and other statistics have gone through the roof.

Membership specifically has risen from 90 members in 2012 to 900 today.

“I think (the successes) start with our programming, which has seen a tremendous jump in frequency and quality, and that was the plan from the beginning for the Casa Captivating and the different categories,” Schmitz said.

Schmitz said attendance to events is tracked through a computer system, and larger events are counted by volunteers.

“There’s something to interest everyone, and all our categories cover what a cultural center should be,” Schmitz said.

St. Mary’s School 2017 Maths Quest Team Wins First Place in Geneva St. Mary’s 2017 Maths Quest Team, consisting of Kendall Memoly (grade six, Aliso Viejo), Calvin Howard (grade five, Laguna Beach), Nora Nickolov (grade five, San Clemente) and Anne Chian (grade five, Orange), won first place in the overall competition at the European Council of Independent Schools (ECIS) International Maths Quest Competition held in Geneva, Switzerland from April 23-May 1. Maths Quest is an international math competition that challenges talented math students under the age of 12 while celebrating and promoting the joy of learning mathematics.

This year’s team was led by head coach Nancy Qushiar and assistant coach Alex Kennedy.

“We could not be more proud of our students for the dedication and perseverance they showed through the competition and everything that led up to it,” Qushiar said.

St. Mary’s School has been participating in the ECIS Maths Quest Competition for the last 11 years. This is the school’s fourth time winning first place in the overall category.

Reality Party for Parents Event Scheduled for May 20 Many adults feel drinking and drug use is a rite of passage. Many adults see teen parties as the same as when they were young. At the Reality Party for Parents, a community prevention event, parents face the current realities of today’s “out of control” teen parties, which include competitive drinking games, fights, random hookups and even sexual assaults, according to officials with the Wellness and Prevention Center at San Clemente High School.

The Reality Party for Parents event, scheduled to take place on May 20, reenacts many of the startling and dangerous events that happen at underage drinking parties. Participants will go on a “house tour,” and each room will represent a different scene. In each room, a group of volunteer teen actors will act out scenarios that cover topics such as alcohol poisoning, driving under the influence and sexual assault. Parents then are debriefed at a community panel compromised of law enforcement, prevention, and substance use professionals, where they discuss the impact of the tour as well as receive valuable tips for talking about the dangers of partying with their teens.

I-5 Freedom Network to Host Free Citizen Workshop

The Outlets at San Clemente is seeking nonprofit organizations to participate in its third annual Shopping Extravaganza charity fundraiser on Oct. 7. San Clemente residents incensed by new toll road proposals

A

young man, maybe in his early 20s, ran across Calle Valle, unaware of the significance of the sign in Shea Weber’s store frontage, but he said he had to know about it.

Weber said the man wondered what the need for a “No Toll Roads Through San Clemente” statement prominently displayed.

“That’s why the education is super important,” Weber said. “We need to at least get info to people to make an educated choice.”

After the proposal by the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) to put a toll road through Trestles failed in 2014, the quasi-governmental entity started hosting public forums in 2016 with new proposals.

To date, 18 proposals have been circulating throughout public forums, City Council meetings and the TCA board of directors meetings. The reason for this is because of population growth, development and a freeway, I-5, that frequently becomes stagnant with traffic.

Some proposals look at going straight through San Clemente, some extend roads and some are transportation enhancements.

Many San Clemente residents have mobilized to oppose many or all of the options put forth by TCA. “I grew up in a small town of Hermosa Beach, and back then San Clemente was a very small beach town as well,” Weber, the owner of Dewey Weber Surfboards, said.

“Hermosa is no longer that way. It’s condensed, it’s overbuilt, with too many people and buildings. San Clemente still feels like a beach town, yet we continue to do things that jeopardize that.”

Weber said he’s not against growth and development, but he said the character of San Clemente is rooted in being a “cool beach town.”

“Once you start putting things like a toll road through San Clemente, it will radically change what this place is,” Weber said.

The most prevalent thing to understand at this time is that nothing is set in stone; none of the proposed routes have been approved and no major discovery has been announced. The TCA and a collection of environmental groups settled a 10-year lawsuit last fall. The lawsuit included the TCA funding a near-$30 million trust to be used for environmental mitigation efforts.

The settlement ensures no toll road, by the TCA, goes through certain areas of the San Mateo Watershed to the south of San Clemente and other environmentally sensitive areas. The environmental studies, required by law, have yet to materialize on the new

The proposal most popular with many San Clemente residents is the 18th, which would connect the 73 toll road to the 241, but even that is a hypothetical brainchild, and on the map it sort of peters off into an unidentified terminus. Therefore, changes can be made.

LOCAL BUSINESSES PRODUCE ‘NO TOLL ROAD’ SIGNS Karin Michielsen, owner of Petit Bonhomme, has been selling “No Toll Road Through San Clemente” bumper stickers and lawn signs at her shop on Avenida Del Mar. “I think it’s wrong to put a toll road through the middle of our little town,” Michielsen said. “People don’t think that it’s going to happen, but it is happening.

I think if they really have to have a toll road, then they should put it way past San Clemente where there’s nobody living and maybe through camp Pendleton.”

Sheila Feiner, owner of Versicolor Screen Printing, has been printing and donating bumper stickers and the “No Toll Roads” Signs “We are longtime residents of San Clemente and we’ve had our business here for 25 years and we just saw a need to make other residents more aware and help the cause,” Feiner said.

The South Orange County Mobility Working Group was scheduled to have a meeting with local representatives and TCA

board members on Wednesday, May 10, at the Outlets at San Clemente. But after Curt Pringle & Associates, the business administering the meeting, was made aware of some confusion, the meeting was canceled on Monday. The meeting was never intended to be a public forum, officials with TCA said.

“A few members of the public have mischaracterized the South Orange County Mobility Working Group (SOCMWG) meeting scheduled on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, as a public forum,” an email obtained by the San Clemente Times stated. “This has caused confusion with other members of the public regarding the appropriate forums for participation and feedback.”

To clarify any confusion, the email stated a public forum will be held at 5:30 p.m. on June 5 at Saddleback College.

“The SOCMWG meeting is a working group for South County local elected officials in transportation leadership roles to provide policy direction and oversight that ensures a fair and inclusive process for the public,” the email stated.

Jeff Corliss, a spokesperson for the TCA, said there is a long way to go with the process of constructing the toll road.

“We’re in the very beginning stages of the project initiation document process,” Corliss said. “That (environmental review) process won’t even begin until probably the beginning of next year.”

THE PETITION Eva O’Keefe has made herself known in San Clemente as an activist for various issues, and she has been encouraging people to sign a petition started by Coalition to Save San Clemente.

The organizers of the group want to give the petition to the Orange County Board of Supervisors, Rep. Darrell Issa, state Sen. Patricia Bates, state Assemblyman Bill Brough, the officials at the TCA and Gov. Jerry Brown.

The petition has gained more than 2,100 signatures as of Wednesday, and O’Keefe wants to reach 5,000.

Some of the reasons for opposition the group has stated are related to property values and various economic issues that could come with the construction of a toll road. In theory, it would create more local seasonal jobs, but petitioners fear the longterm effects.

“From my conversations (with local officials), it seems that (the TCA) is pushing for option 14,” O’Keefe said. “The TCA’s goal is to connect the 241 to I-5. The Toll Road would have to go past our high school and impact Marblehead.”

O’Keefe said the organization is open to alternatives that would not potentially affect San Clemente.

“They could connect Crown Valley to the 241, La Pata to Cristianitos Road, and there are other arterials that are not even on maps right now that could potentially be useful,” O’Keefe said, adding the petition will support these alternatives.

The options would not come to fruition for at least seven to 10 years and could cost between less than $100 million or more than $600 million, according to preliminary estimates from the TCA’s meeting last year.

O’Keefe said as technology and transportation evolves, the need for a toll road may become obsolete. She said the concept may be outdated by the time construction could start.

“It’s like the Walkman in 1990-something,” O’Keefe said. “What could be done is reducing the rates of the toll roads and then make it available to more people, make it more affordable.”

Funding sources for the toll road at this time are nebulous. Some have no identified funding, some could be funded by the TCA using development impact feeds or toll revenue bonds. ach year, the San Clemente Garden Club hosts a garden tour of some of the most vivid and lush residential horticultural displays in the city.

Some of the themes that have dominated at the last two years have been how the gardens conserve water and incorporate drought-tolerant plants, with some going as far as complete xeriscaping.

The tour takes place Saturday, May 20. Tickets are $30 each if you order in advance at www.sanclementegardenclub. com and $35 the day of the tour, cash or check only.

Dittmar Garden 100 Block of W. Avenida de Los Lobos Marinos This mid-century modern home is situated on a coastal arroyo in southwest San Clemente. While viewing this garden, you might feel like you are at a resort in Hawaii.

Wurn-Christensen Garden 300 Block of Calle Descanso This garden rests in the coastal hills that began as a blank canvas in 1996 and has become a country garden with formal elements.

After viewing the colorful front yard garden, complete with an iron gazebo adorned with eden roses, an antique sundial, sitting area and plant propagation bench, wander through the five arches of roses leading to the backyard. A cottagestyle fence surrounds a small vegetable garden. Among the many roses the owner adores, there are citrus and avocado trees and a white fig tree. An antique urn, a family heirloom, is displayed prominently.

Be sure to notice the many statues in and around the garden that were collected during 30 years. The relaxing garden rooms and sitting areas are perfect for a morning coffee or evening glass of wine.

The little cabana and several vintage iron tables provide the perfect spot for family meals, entertaining and just relaxing after a long day tending the garden. Young and old alike enjoy the swing set along the side yard. The garden is complete with 11 small water features, a plethora of scented plants and a hillside of Italian cypresses.

A swing set in the garden reminds adults of their childhood. A little cabana for morning coffee or a glass of wine after a long day of tending the garden.

An antique urn that was the owner’s great-grandfather’s and many vintage iron tables are placed throughout the garden for an impromptu alfresco meal, even a hidden propagation area for starting seedlings and nurturing plants even a secret meditation spot.

It is a country garden with formal elements, amd a cottage garden with more Mediterranean plants than traditional English ones. Many birds and bees bring animation to the garden.

Smith Garden 2500 Block of Via Durazno This garden is a fun, eclectic yard brimming with a variety of interesting settings, including a tiki hut on the hillside surrounded by tropical plants, a rose garden, lounge areas by the pool and a tucked-away bar and herb garden. Some specimens in the yard include a lebombo cycad above the family’s sign, and the large staghorn fern hanging from the Queen Palm below the hut and the queen sago in the planter beside the pool. The front yard was recently re-done with water wise plants like euphorbia flanaganii (on

This Mediterranean garden has been a work in progress for 17 years. When you follow the Mexican pavers, they lead the way through the front yard garden lined with palm trees and succulent-filled clay pots. Found objects collected at the beach like rocks, shells and drift wood add interest to the lush planters. Notice the orchids and ferns that line the walkway as you approach the entrance to the backyard. Pass through a creative mosaic archway which leads to three outdoor living spaces for entertaining and relaxing. The flagstone patio and outdoor fireplace with mosaic opening is surrounded by more palms and succulents. Climb the spiral staircase to the upper deck to take in the garden from above and a view of the ocean. Breathe in the salt air and relax.

Schrader Front Yard Garden 100 Block of W. Avenida de Los Lobos Marinos Take the stairs to the top of this terraced front yard. Stop for a minute at the dining table, then head down the stone steps side planted with succulents, grasses, aloes, mature palms and lavender.

Enjoy the mermaid fountain and sit a while on the bench shaded by a very productive lemon tree. Continue your journey down to the chairs that face the ocean with a view of the arroyo. Notice the unique garden art that completes this peaceful picture and inviting front yard.

Hannan Front Yard Garden 100 Block of W. Avenida de Los Lobos Marinos A picket fence and rose-covered arbor welcome visitors to the front yard. Seasonal colors create curb appeal with iceberg roses and delphiniums that brighten this cottage garden. Here, topiary deer share space with a quaint rabbit hutch condo.

Birds swoop in for a quick dip in the stone birdbath set in the garden along with a giant rabbit dressed for spring. A variety of fragrant roses lead the way to the shady front porch—complete with a bench and colorful hanging baskets.

Police were called to a man described as having long hair, wearing round sunglasses possibly doing drugs because he was “sniffling a lot and acting weird” while sitting on the toilet. The post did not mention how the caller knew the man was on the toilet.

CITIZEN ASSIST Marquita, 100 Block (1:45 a.m.) A woman said she did not believe dispatchers when she was told officers made contact with a man in the area and there were no signs of any shots fired. The woman requested to speak directly to a deputy.

DISTURBANCE El Camino Real, 200 Block (12:42 a.m.) A “large street brawl” was reported in front of the bars. The caller said they saw several people hit and fall to the ground.

Saturday, May 6 BRANDISHING A WEAPON Avenida Montalvo/ Avenida Lobeiro (5:55 p.m.) Police were called to a 50-year-old man who had a weapon in his pocket. The caller was uncooperative and said the man had a dog off its leash and a knife and was going to hurt him.

DISTURBANCE El Camino Real, 2000 Block (3:14 p.m.) A woman who was uncooperative with dispatchers said her “meth-head boyfriend” would not give her money back.

Friday, May 5 DISTURBANCE El Camino Real, 300 Block Police were called to Pizza Port, where a man was screaming and throwing items around. About 10 customers helped remove the man from the location.

ASSIST OUTSIDE AGENCY El Camino Real, 900 Block (3:04 p.m.) The roof of a business caved in, likely due to the heavy rain on Sunday. Orange County Fire Authority responded, but no one appeared to be trapped inside.

SUSPICIOUS PERSON/CIRCUMSTANCES Avenida Victoria/El Camino (7:26 a.m.) A woman said she had been drugged several times in one week.

SUSPICIOUS PERSON/CIRCUMSTANCES Avenida Victoria, 600 Block (2:40 a.m.) At the Fisherman’s Restaurant, police were called to a suspicious man who was “talking about gangs and shootings…” The caller said the man was wearing a blue bandana on his head, and that he had just been kicked out by staff for an unidentified reason.

TRAFFIC STOP El Camino Real, 200 Block (12:48 a.m.) A driver, who was on probation with a suspended driver’s license with a “search/seizure revocation” status, was in possession of three bags of meth and one meth pipe. The driver was cited for at least four violations and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Man from San Juan Capistrano Killed in Single-Car Crash in San Clemente

arly Saturday morning, just after midnight, a 21-year-old man from San Juan Capistrano was killed in a single-vehicle collision and died as a result of his injuries.

The Orange County Coroner’s Office has identified the man as Joseph McCarty of San Juan. McCarty, who was driving in a compact Honda, was traveling on Avenida Vaquero just south of Calle Vallarta when he failed to compensate for the curve and crashed into a utility pole, said Lt. Steve Gil, a spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

McCarty and an unidentified 21-yearold woman, who was riding in the passenger seat, were both ejected from the vehicle. Both were taken to a local hospital, where McCarty was pronounced dead. The woman survived with minor injuries.

The OCSD Major Accident Reconstruction Team (MART) is investigating the cause of the crash and any additional information. Gil said it could take a month to complete the investigation.

Letters to the Editor SONGS’ RADIATION IS DANGEROUS, BUT PERHAPS NOT IN THE WAY YOU THINK ROGER JOHNSON, San Clemente

Two recent writers (Jay Gaskins, April 20-26, and Bill Kindel, April 27-May 3) have made mention of fleeing from “mushroom clouds” if there is an accident at San Onofre. If this is a reference to a Hiroshima-like atomic explosion, Mr. Kindel is correct that there will never be such an explosion. The nuclear waste they plan to store a few miles from us is not the highly-enriched weapons-grade material used in nuclear weapons.

On the other hand, this nuclear waste can become fissile if attacked by missiles.

It is a very attractive target considering that the Hiroshima bomb was a little ball of U-235 about the size of a grapefruit.

Compare that with the nearly 2,000 tons of uranium and plutonium that Edison wants to store near zip code 92672.

What is worrisome about both letters is a complete misunderstanding of the danger of nuclear waste. The threat is massive amounts of radiation, not atomic explosions. Each of the 150 canisters to be stored at San Onofre has more radioactive potential than all of the contamination from Chernobyl, which was exposed to many parts of Europe in 1986. You can’t hide from radiation and you can’t run away from it either. Gamma radiation (similar to X-rays) will penetrate lead and several feet of reinforced concrete.

The human fetus is about 50 times more vulnerable than the average adult male that the nuclear industry likes to use as its standard when measuring radiation danger.

Some people fear only things they can see or hear (like an explosion) or things that have an immediate effect (like a bullet). There is no defense against radiation, and radiation-induced cancer often takes years or even decades to express itself.

Radiation exposure is cumulative over a lifetime, and many radionuclides do not decay to safe levels for hundreds of thousands of years (multiply the half-life of each element times 10).

If you own a hazmat suit, it might protect you from alpha radiation (unless you breathe or swallow potentially lethal alpha particles) but not from neutrons or gamma radiation. Unfortunately, hazmat suits become contaminated and have to be discarded after one use (and they don’t come in children’s sizes). If your house or property becomes contaminated, everything you own becomes worthless San Clemente Times May 11-17, 2017

Fortunately, there are quite a few people in San Clemente very upset about our area becoming a nuclear waste dump for the indefinite future. The sad part is that some are not upset and many are clueless

San Clemente was founded and built

by Ole Hanson, my grandfather, with a very beautiful idea in mind: An authentic “Spanish Revisionist Architecture” town by the sea that blended into the gorgeous landscape and ocean shore. Quality of life was one of the main ideas, with the nice Mediterranean climate complemented by the sunshine. Here, he considered, was just the place for swimming, walking, exercise and health in harmony with nature. The plan was right out of Ole Hanson’s philosophy of life that he shared with his good friend, former President Theodore Roosevelt. Now, those who have no interest in the city of San Clemente, nor the healthy lifestyle it promotes, nor the beauty of the city and its history, plan to sully the beauty of this magical place with a hideous toll road. This is something that my grandfather would oppose intensely— and I share his sentiments of preserving this land. This monstrosity must be stopped. Oppose this with every inch of your political fortitude. I stand with you.

GOVERNMENT’S FAILURE ON REHABILITATION ON FULL DISPLAY AT CITY COUNCIL MEETING

the government, not subcontracted out to for-profit business who make money at the sake of disrupting the quality of life and property values of our citizens.

The speakers who spoke in favor of sober living/drug rehab houses in San Clemente and for the repeal of the city ordinance regulating “transitory lodging” were likely employees of for-profit rehab providers with a vested interest and seemed as if they’d been coached to spin the truth.

The City Council should be applauded for their stance to protect our citizens and sustain the quality of life for the people who permanently live in San Clemente.

Allowing businesses to run in the middle of neighborhoods is plain wrong on so many angles that it doesn’t merit further commentary.

Support City Council members who are committed to protecting our property values, safety and quality of life. Let’s not allow the choice of drug dependency create an even larger problem.

TOLL ROAD PROPOSALS THROUGH SAN CLEMENTE DON’T MAKE SENSE

The sober living house discussion at the May 2 City Council meeting was pitiful in many ways. Pitiful because of the drug and alcohol problems that we have in America and the many people who are suffering from these addictions. Pitiful because state and federal governments have tried to transfer drug rehab treatment to a city issue, creating turmoil in our neighborhoods. Pitiful because the majority of the speakers were all associated with drug rehab businesses with a vested interest to stay gainfully employed to the detriment of our neighborhoods, our safety and our quality of life. And pitiful because there are people who believe that they have the right to operate a rehabilitation-home business in the middle of family neighborhoods.

Our state and federal governments have failed us by now classifying drug addiction as disability. This a slap in the face of those who have disabilities not because of their poor choices, but because of how they were born. Government-supported mental health treatment should be provided by

Let us first start by saying we are against all toll roads and/or connectors within the city of San Clemente. The three proposed routes from the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) would destroy everything many homeowners’ have worked for. We need to protect our home equity and values; we want to be surrounded by our beautiful hills and canyons and the great blue Pacific Ocean, without hideous concrete structures dotting the landscape; and we want to protect the peace and tranquility that come from living in a quaint beach town that has not been subjected to over-development by unconcerned corporate giants. All of the proposed routes put forward by the TCA pose a major threat to the precious concerns listed above. Surely there must be a less intrusive solution that will not go “through” our beautiful city by the sea.

Supreme Court Appointment Languishes in Political Arena

T

he newly confirmed Supreme Court Justice, Neil M. Gorsuch, attended his first meeting of the United States Supreme Court Justices on April 18 in Washington, D.C. He was welcomed by the by the other eight Supreme Court judges and the attorneys who were present to argue their case before the highest court in the U.S. Gorsuch acknowledged the kind words of the presiding judges and indicated he was ready for the work that lies before them. By Herman Sillas filed on behalf of the parties and read the notes from the clerk. He had his own notes to refer to for questions he intended to address from the lawyers before him. The attorneys, in turn, were eager to respond to the questions that were to be asked by the court.

The arrival of this day has a long history, and something I hoped we would have been able to address at a much faster

pace. But, it is not known when God will ask a judge to join him, and this left a vacancy on the court to be named by the president of the United States and be confirmed by the majority of the Senate.

Former President Barack Obama won a second term as president and was just starting his final year of the term when Justice Antonin Scalia unexpectedly died.

Obama immediately sought the résumés of responsible and qualified justices and attorneys. Names were submitted to Obama from bar associations, senators and members of congress. He personally interviewed several and came up with a candidate that he felt was the most qualified, Merrick Garland. Obama then instructed Garland to arrange an interview with the senators. The republicans controlled, and still control, the Senate.

They decided the position would remain vacant for the last year of Obama’s term.

They were not about to choose a moderate compromise.

The 2016 election took place, and Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton for president. Trump quickly announced that

he would name a new man to the Supreme Court. Names were forwarded to President Trump by senators and members of the federal and state bars. He reviewed the material and interviewed some of the candidates. The republican senators indicated that they were ready to confirm the president’s choice. He announced Neil Gorsuch as his choice. The Republication senators set up dates to interview Gorsuch on his qualifications for the judgeship.

Gorsuch responded with guarded answers. Specific cases were questioned, and his answers were not transparent.

Democratic senators submitted questions and were not that impressed with his responses. He was not supported by the democrats.

After three days of questioning, the republican senators voted for the new member of the court. And so, Justice Gorsuch took his seat with the rest of the bench.

There are many questions that will be decided by this new body that will have an impact on all of us.

What would have happened if Clinton had won? Then she would have named

TCA’s proposal affects the possible loss or changes to Shorecliffs Golf Course, the Vista Hermosa Sports Park complex and our local high school, not to mention the many homes and buildings in the path of destruction.

How do you measure the negative effects of the massive construction and pollution involved in the construction of this behemoth that is being called the answer to traffic congestion? It is documented that living within 1,000 feet of a freeway (toll road) poses great health risks for all of the residents affected, who are not able to relocate due to economic and or logistical reasons. All this has been proposed with no real studies that prove traffic congestion relief; this project is only a relocation of the traffic bottleneck. We urge all residents of San Clemente who are against the proposed 241 toll road extension to stand up and be counted. If the proposed route through Trestles/SanOnofre was rejected, what on God’s green earth justifies building a toll road extension through the heart of San Clemente? It just makes no sense.

Instead, he argues that the U.S. should commit to a military strategy. I agree that a comprehensive military policy is necessary. I also contend that the U.S. should be a leader in humanitarian efforts. I call on Rep. Issa for leadership by doing the right thing and sponsoring a bill that would increase the number of Syrian refugees that the U.S. accepts to address this urgent need and to save lives. True leadership is strength and compassion and the courage to deviate from the party line.

Why do coaches ascend to the rafters to readjust floodlights that may have been knocked off kilter by lofty volleyball shots?

Why do they arrive on Thursday at 8 p.m. and work late into the night to set up the gym after volleyball and basketball is done, all to let the dance teams run their only dress rehearsals all Friday before the concert that evening?

The time in now for San Clemente High School performing arts students to have an on-campus performing arts center to match their enormous talent, dedication and production. Such a center would also serve as a wonderful venue for presentations and performances for the community at large as well.

One town, one school, one center.

The San Clemente High School Dance Team was all smiles at the recent Spring Concert, titled “Salvation.” They leaped and turned through the intricate choreography of 11 dances, four of which brought home state and national championship trophies. Dancers from other classes and groups, including the rowdy all-male team featuring many athletes, displayed amazing rhythm and poise in styles as varied as hip-hop and salsa. Young dancers from the San Clemente Dance and Performing Arts Center as well as the team’s dance clinic charmed the packed crowd, showing that the future of dance performance in San Clemente is strong.

Last week, The Washington Post published a major expose of the U.S. dairy industry concluding that mega dairies scam consumers into paying extra for “organic” milk that isn’t. the new Supreme Court judge. Would she have submitted the same name Obama had offered? I think not. The nominee still would have needed to get the vote of the republicans.

There may be another death or retirement in the next four years, and republicans may lose some votes in the midterm election. If that happens, Trump will have a great deal with democratic senators.

They may choose to wait until Trump is out of office. I think there must be a better way to select Supreme Court justices than to allow one branch of government to play politics with our future. That’s the view from the pier.

At the Movies: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ Vol. 2 Is a Blast

uardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 is the least Marvel-esque movie Marvel Studios has ever made. Though nothing from the studio has yet to surpass Iron Man (2008) as far as quality, the Guardians sequel to the light-hearted space adventure from 2014 is fresh and different from anything comic book adapted to film in years.

(Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel) are back to save the universe again, but on a more personal level. The high priestess, Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), wants them gone for acts she believes are unethical, and an old man (Kurt Russell) from the planet Ego claims to be Peter’s long lost father.

Guardians 2 is a step up visually—the cinematic cosmos is eye candy to behold on screen with vibrant color schemes and special effects. Gunn’s script is fun and

humorous, but also heavy and deep in sentiment. Russell and Pom Klementieff fit right in with the returning cast, and Karen Gillan is even more badass as Gamora’s sister Nebula.

Peter’s second classic rock mixtape is just as catchy as last time, and most importantly, Gunn and crew don’t feel it necessary to try and shoe-in any Avengers connections while doing their own thing. The one thing that is a bit too juvenile are the jokes, which would mainly be appreciated by middle-schoolers.

But since that is Marvel’s demographic, mission accomplished. SC

As the undergarments with signatures dangle from above, along with other Western hoopla and tradition, the atmosphere is cozy and comforting.

Lisa’s Kitchen and Pedro’s Cocina is nestled in the back of the bar, where breakfast, lunch and dinner is served.

Beef or chicken burritos are served in four small quadrants, and the carne asada was sampled. The meat was more tender than wool and the beans were cooked to a pleasing texture. Salsa rojo or verde are always the options. The red salsa was spicy enough not to deter even sensitive palates.

There’s a certain balance to the Mexican

food staple that demands a serving have just enough of each: tomato, lettuce, peppers (optional) and always salsa. The tangerine slices were also a fun and unique addition.

Gourmet and finer bar food is becoming more popular, and Lisa’s Kitchen and Pedro’s Cocina has found a winning combination.

GUEST OPINION: On Life and Love After 50 by Tom Blake

Portugal: The Algarve Region and 120 Miles of Beaches

W

hen tourists travel, they often try to see too many sites in the limited time they have. Hence, they might overlook interesting items in the area where they are staying. Such is the case in the Algarve, the southernmost region of Portugal, where my partner Greta and I are spending the first two weeks of May. Normally, we like to travel between European cities by train, but in the Algarve, trains are limited. So, we rented a car out of necessity to reach the private home where we are staying, and to visit the beach cities of the Algarve, which has 120 miles of coastline.

The home, called Casa Sams, is remotely located in the hills above the town of Estoi, five miles from Faro, the main city and capital of the Algarve. To reach the home, there are left turns, right turns, hairpin turns, a pack of friendly but wild dogs and a myriad of unmarked singlelane, unpaved roads.

We’ve been here a week and haven’t made it up the hill in 10 attempts without making at least one wrong turn. But, the view is panoramic of the ocean and the property is on five acres of orange trees and olive trees.

There are so many beautiful beach cities within 30 miles to the east and west, and we immediately started exploring them.

On May 1, International Workers’ Day, we drove to Tavira, a fishing village. Its

sidewalk cafes were packed. We thought we’d give Portuguese food a try and ordered sardines. I ate two of the five on my plate and that was enough for me.

Driving to the next port city, Olhao, we saw all kinds of stuffed mannequins along the side of the road, with people ON LIFE AND LOVE AFTER 50 stopping their cars to

By Tom Blake admire them. It was the strangest thing we’ve ever seen. We learned via the Internet later that those stuffed mannequins were to honor International Worker’s Day, and they were unique to, pretty much, only that portion of the road we were on in all of Portugal. We hit it big, just by coincidence—right time, right day and right road.

Our favorite beach city is Vilamoura.

It has a horseshoe-shaped marina with hundreds of fancy yachts in the center.

We estimate there are at least 70 upscale restaurants, including three Irish pubs, facing the yachts.

Even more restaurants are on the beach boardwalk with access from the marina.

We had lunch at Buzios Beach Café.

In the city of Portimao, the beach had more than 200 sand volleyball courts.

We watched women’s and men’s doubles tournaments. We enjoyed the action while having lunch at a beach café there.

Business Beat

A former law enforcement chaplain turned health guru, Borrowe said he tapped into professors at the University of California Los Angeles in order to perfect his product.

“All of our ingredients, we grow most of it, and then it’s engineered after that,” Borrowe said. “You’re taking the nutrition that you want and leaving behind what you don’t want. The calories are low, but the nutrition is high.”

Ingredients to the drinks includes berries, protein supplements, kale, peanut butter—you get the idea. People can also get hot or cold drinks on-site.

Borrowe said he has been concocting protein shakes since the 1970s when he was a high school athlete. He said the drinks back then were good for you but messy, complicated and lacked flavor. The goal is to eliminate “the mad scientist at home,” Borrowe said, adding he has sold 60,000 shakes since opening.

On the way home, we visited another beach city, Albuferia. It is well-known for cakes made with almonds. These are so tasty it’s mind-boggling.

The olive oil, seafood, olives, oranges, pastries, bread, cheese and wine in Portugal are delectable. Great wine is less than five euros per bottle.

On our fifth day, we decided to walk around Estoi, the closest town to us. It appeared to be sleepy, not much there.

We saw a sign describing a palace, hidden away. We tried to get to it, but there were walls all around and gates were padlocked.

On a deserted back street, a couple walked by us, and said in an English accent, “It’s worth going inside, we can show you the way.” Tony and Josephine were from Manchester, England.

The ancient palace had been converted into a hotel. It was beautiful inside. There were murals hand painted by Italian artists on the ceilings throughout the main floor of the hotel.

Also in Estoi, there are Roman ruins dating from the 3rd century A.D. This is a perfect example of trying to see too much elsewhere and missing wonderful things right where you are staying.

That night, we met Tony and Josephine for dinner at a local restaurant that Greta and I had driven past several times, thinking it was just for villagers. It was Tony’s 58th birthday. The dinner was delicious

and reasonable.

As we concluded our first week in the Algarve, Greta suggested we explore Faro, the nearby city where we had only shopped for groceries.

We did not realize that it also had a wonderful marina and historic district. Why had we overlooked a city so close to us?

Faro has its unique characteristics: within the large Carmo Church, there is a chapel constructed out of the bones of 1,245 deceased monks. A little morbid, but that’s what makes travel so interesting.

Also in Faro, storks from the nearby Ria Formosa nature preserve build their nests on top of churches and buildings for protection. There were four nests built out of sizeable tree branches atop the Town Arch leading into the old city. The preserve is one of the most important areas for aquatic birds in Portugal.

Volleyball Earns Tough Victory in Playoff Opener After drawing a tough opponent in Redondo Union to open their bid into the CIF-SS Division 1 Championships, the San Clemente boys volleyball team responded with a balanced and convincing win in front of their home crowd on May 9.

San Clemente beat the Seahawks, who tied for first overall in the Bay League but were seeded second, in four sets 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19. The Tritons will host Corona Del Mar, the third-ranked team in Division 1, in the second round on May 11.

San Clemente (22-6) went on a 5-0 run late in the first set to take a commanding 22-14 lead, but as was the case throughout the night, Redondo Union proved it would not go away that easy. The Seahawks responded with a 7-2 run of their own and got within three points, but Bryce Curtis recorded the final kill for San Clemente to end the set.

Redondo Union’s momentum carried into the second set and, fueled by a 9-1 run, they took it 25-21. The Seahawks’ senior opposite Logan Glave tallied five kills and a block in the second.

After dropping the second, Kyler Presho, Kyle Merrill and Curtis provided the firepower for San Clemente down the stretch.

Presho tallied four of his 10 kills in the third, while Curtis chipped in three kills, an ace and a block in a set that went backand-forth until the end.

With Presho drawing attention in the middle, Merrill and Curtis began to take over hitting from the outside in the fourth. Curtis had five of his team-high 15 kills in the final set, and Merrill had an ace and four kills. Merrill recorded the final point after hammering a ball past two Seahawks blockers on the left side. “(Redondo Union) is a good team.

They are a league championship team so that’s a pretty good opponent for our first round,” Triton coach, Ken Goldstone, said. “We’re going to have to play a little bit better against Corona Del Mar, but hopefully we’ll be able to do that.”

San Clemente lost in three sets to Corona Del Mar in their only meeting of the season at the Best of the West Tournament on March 11.

Foothill’s Second-Half Surge Downs Tritons Lacrosse in Semifinals The San Clemente boys lacrosse team could not find an answer to Foothill’s momentum-changing attack during the second half of the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division semifinals on May 6.

The third-ranked Knights erased a three-goal deficit just before halftime and rattled off a large scoring run in the third quarter to upset the second-ranked Tritons and win, 14-9. Foothill was set to play top-seeded Corona Del Mar in the Orange County Championship game on May 10.

Results were not available at press time.

Foothill’s Ellis Geis was the catalyst behind the Knights’ goal-scoring surge.

The attack man scored his third goal of the game to cut San Clemente’s lead to 6-3 with six minutes to go before halftime, and scored the game-tying goal to knot the match at 6-6 with seconds to go before the break. Geis’ final goal of the first half came with San Clemente playing two men down due to penalties.

San Clemente took an 8-7 lead early in the third quarter when Matthew Keany scored on a feed from Nick Lemus, but that was the last time the Tritons would hold an advantage. Geis scored less than one minute later to tie it, which ignited a 4-0 Foothill run that gave the Knights an 11-9 lead.

San Clemente held all of the momentum early. The Tritons forced several Foothill turnovers in the first quarter, which turned into fast-break points. Back-to-back Keany goals stretched San Clemente’s lead to 5-2 early in the second quarter Keany scored a team-high three goals and Liam Nelson scored two. Omeed Farhadi, David Howren, Josh Sanchez and Lemus all notched one goal. Goalie Harrison Webb made four saves.

San Clemente (14-7) defeated Los Alamitos and El Toro, respectively, to reach the semifinals.

Girls Lacrosse Falls to Tartans in Second Round The St. Margaret’s girls lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead against San Clemente in the second round of the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs and did not let up.

The Tartans methodically broke down the Tritons’ zone defense and got production from up and down the lineup to secure a 15-9 victory. The Tartans fell to Mater Dei in the semifinals on May 6.

St. Margaret’s was able to build up a 5-1 lead early before the Tritons started chipping away. A Delainey Iles goal was followed by a goal by Madison Buckley to make it 5-3, but St. Margaret’s goalie Bella Ghanbari stood tall and made several key saves to halt the Tritons’ attack in the final minutes and stake her team to a 7-3 lead at San Clemente Times May 11–17, 2017

The Tritons’ doubles teams of Chris Torcaso and Corey Angeli and Caden Spencer and Michael Tilly ended up playing against each other in the South Coast League doubles championship on May 2. Torcaso and Angeli came away with the win. Both doubles teams will advance to the CIF-SS Individual Championship tournament on May 25.

The loss ended a historic season for the Tritons. San Clemente finished with a program-best record of 15-4, and captured the South Coast League title for the first time in school history.

Tennis Faces CDM in Playoff Opener, Doubles Teams Advance The South Coast League champion San

Eight San Clemente girls track and field athletes qualified for the CIF-SS Track and Field Prelims on May 13 at Trabuco Hills High School. The Triton athletes qualified for postseason competition as a result of strong finishes at the South Coast League finals last week. As a team, the Tritons placed fourth in league.

Freshman distance runner Hana Catsimanes was crowned the 1,600-meter league champion after posting a time of 4:54.99 at league finals. Catsimanes’ time is currently the fifth-fastest mark in the event in the state, and was recorded as the second-fastest 1,600-meter time in school history.

Junior Chandler Horton claimed the league’s 3,200-meter title.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Emilie Bennett, Jasmine Custer, Sienna Keck and Rylee Kerr qualified for prelims. Bennett will also compete in the 100- and 200-meter dash, and 4x400-meter relay. Kerr will also compete in the 400-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay. Marina McDonough and Anezka DeGree will round out the 4x400-meter relay team at prelims.

he Noble Path Foundation will host its third annual High 5ive 4Fitness athletic competition from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on May 13 at San Clemente High School.

The event incorporates competition among all ages in the spirit of health and wellness.

“We started it with the thought of bringing together the whole fitness community under one umbrella,” said Cindi Juncal, the executive director of The Noble Path Foundation in San Clemente. “We came up with this idea of the battle of the gyms, and it’s all for fun. But you can’t get those athletes and not expect it to be super competitive.”

There are no cash prizes in the gym battle, just bragging rights.

Juncal said the event started as a 5K poker run and has evolved into a full decathlon of athletic events. There will also be informational booths regarding health and fitness at the event, located at Thalassa Stadium.

“It’s a fitness carnival atmosphere with events such as trying to score against a soccer player, how fast is your fastball, how hard is your tennis serve and a 50-yard dash,” Juncal said. “There will be regulation-size and kiddie basketball hoops so everyone can participate.”

General registration is $10 in advance and $15 the day of the event.

Boys Swim Team Qualifies Swimmers for CIF The San Clemente boys swim team capped off a strong regular season with several standout performances at the Sea View League finals at Capistrano Valley High School on May 4.

The Tritons had five individual swimmers qualify for the CIF-SS Prelims in Riverside on May 11. The group includes: Boston Williams (50-, 100-yard freestyle), Weston Rowan (200 IM, 100 backstroke), Dorian Johnson (500 freestyle), Spencer Burress (500 freestyle), Brad Prolo (100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke).

Violating decorum of the lineup can cause bad vibes

ast week at Salt Creek there was an incident in which a kid popped off to an older guy after being called out for “snaking” or “burning” him repeatedly.

The kid was subsequently “dunked” for his apparent lack of respect. His mother, who was on the beach at the time, reported the incident to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, which responded in mass with a boat, a helicopter and numerous patrol cars. In previous generations, an altercation like this would have reverberated like passing gas in the wind. When it came to localized lineups, there was a clear pecking order in place; and for those who disregarded it, they were quickly educated. Those days are dead and gone.

Today there are more surfers in the water than ever. With the growth in surf schools, scholastic surf teams and the overall rise in popularity of the sport, spots like Salt Creek and Trestles are more impacted than ever. In the case of the incident at Salt Creek, which we won’t delve into much further, all involved parties share a portion of the blame. When the guiding rules of surfing are not respected and adhered to, things like this are bound to happen.

It actually happens quite frequently—just without the absurd police response. Bad vibes in the water are easily mitigated by embracing better etiquette.

“There will always be another wave,” writes Shaun Tomson in his book The Surfer’s Code.

If there was ever one concept that could halt the ugliness of localism it is this.

waves. Besides taking a break from the workaday world and maybe some spiritual satisfaction, it’s a completely unproductive pursuit. We shouldn’t need to escape from our escape. Wind blows across the ocean, swells are created, and if we’re lucky we’re be able to catch and ride one of them for a few seconds. And if we’re not, no stress.

Just sit out the back and wait for another.

Waves are free. It’s that simple. Don’t make it an ego trip.

“I think we have to teach a lot of these kids to first be gentlemen,” prophetically stated the great Duke Kahanamoku. “Try to help one another and not hog the doggone waves.”

That brings us to the next concept: respect. At its core surfing is about developing a respect for the ocean, as well as fellow watermen and women. Whether it’s surviving a huge wave or dodging a huge shark, the ocean commands respect and when we paddle out we’re all in the brine together.

Treat your fellow surfer the way you would want to be treated. Do you want people dropping in on you? Probably not. So don’t do it to other people. Just don’t.

When an angry surfer yell, “That was my wave!” they’re full of it. Nobody owns

“That moment when I started thinking ‘I might be able to win this thing’ was awesome,” said an elated Matson. “You always go in to an event with the mindset you can win it, but being so young, I didn’t have too many expectations. I’m so stoked right now! This is definitely the biggest accomplishment in my career so far.”

the waves or the beaches. Share a wave and you’re apt to get an even better one in return. And the reverse, if you’re surfing somewhere new, have respect for the people that surf there every day. Understand that breaks like Lowers and Salt Creek are under extreme pressure due to unrelenting, increasing crowds. For the guys and girls who call it home, a little room to breathe goes a long way.

rules to consider. Always respect a surfer’s right of way. Whoever is closest to the peak gets the wave, plain and simple. Don’t snake them and say something stupid like, “Oh, I didn’t see you.” That’s how fights start. Be smart, be aware and look before taking off.

When paddling out, don’t stroke straight through the lineup. Instead take the long way out so you don’t get in anybody’s way.

It’ll be safer for everyone this away. And similarly, don’t ditch your board when a wave’s coming. Letting go of your board can be incredibly dangerous for the other surfers in the area. You may get sent through the rinse cycle, but it’s better than the fin of your board scalping the poor guy that’s paddling behind you.

And just like respecting your fellow surfers, respect the environment. Make it a habit to pick up five pieces of trash every time you hit the beach. Get involved in local beach clean-ups. Take a stand against toll roads and nuclear waste. Do your part to ensure that future generations of waveriders will be able to enjoy the spot as much as you have. In other words, leave the world a better place than you found it.

Summer’s only a month away. We only have one Pacific Ocean. Let’s all learn to play nice. SC
