Spent Nuclear Waste Legislation Moves to House Floor THE LATEST: The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce on Wednesday, June 28, voted to advance a bill introduced by Rep. John Shimkus, R-Illinois, that would make it easier to move spent nuclear waste from the shores of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

The bill, called the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017, would amend the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982, and would allow the Department of Energy to enter into contracts with temporary storage providers while a permanent repository is found or constructed. Current legislation does now allow for temporary storage of such energy.

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-California, who represents San Clemente, had introduced an initial bill.

Issa had introduced similar bills in 2015 and 2016, but neither made it past House committees.

Some of the amendments to the bill today would provide $50 million or 10 percent of the appropriated amounts from the Nuclear Waste Fund to provide interim storage facilities for fiscal years 2020 through 2025.

The bill would allow the Secretary of Energy to enter into an agreement with companies to provide interim storage of spent nuclear waste, whether the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s decision to reopen Yucca Mountain moves forward or is denied.

These amendments would enforce the Department of Energy to “uphold its responsibility to take ownership of spent fuel and for transportation to a storage facility,” Issa’s press release stated.

The bill prioritizes removing waste from shuttered plants, like SONGS, and “clarifies regulatory and permitting requirements related to the development of a permanent repository at Yucca Mountain,” the release stated.

A date for when the bill will be heard by the House floor has not yet been determined.

Yucca Mountain was supposed to be the permanent storage facility for the spent fuel, but those plans fell through and it appeared SONGS would not have anywhere to store it. The Department of Energy is San Clemente Times July 6–12, 2017

School District Takes Strong Stance against Toll Road Options THE LATEST: The Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees voted 6-1 on Wednesday, June 28, to adopt a resolution that opposes any toll road extension alignment that would adversely affect district school sites and students.

Board President Martha McNicholas, who was not in attendance but participated over the phone, was the sole no vote.

The item, which was brought before the board by Trustee Patricia Holloway, of San Clemente, drew dozens of community members to the meeting. San Clemente Mayor Kathy Ward was one of the public speakers who spoke in support of the board’s resolution.

Trustee Jim Reardon said an important part of the resolution is the request for the county and OCTA to reevaluate the need for toll roads in South Orange County.

Reardon went on to call the Transportation Corridor Agencies a “bully” and a “zombie.”

“They’ve played this game in South County for years and years, and they’re back,” Reardon said. “When TCA signed that agreement with the environmental groups, it put itself out of business.”

WHAT’S NEXT: “Because the toll road is a county approved project, it does not involve any district approvals, easements or agreements,” CUSD officials said in a statement. “Before TCA can construct the ultimate toll expressway extension to Interstate 5, it will be required to identify, and environmentally review, a new alignment for such a project.” —Allison Jarrell

School District, Teachers Union Reach Impasse in Contract Negotiations THE LATEST: Contract negotiations between the Capistrano Unified School District and the Capistrano Unified Education Association have officially stalled, according to a Friday, June 30, press release from the district.

ties were unable to reach an agreement on June 29. The school district’s last offer to the union was a “two-year agreement that includes a 1.5 percent ongoing salary schedule increase effective July 1, 2016, a two-year increase (for plan years 2017 and 2018) to health and welfare benefits, and a retirement incentive for 2017-2018.”

In a notice online regarding the declared impasse, teachers union officials describe the parties as “far apart economically.”

“Their health and welfare offer would only make the Kaiser HMO plan a no copremium to our members for 2017,” union officials said of CUSD’s offer. “Their proposed salary increase would likely be negated by an increase to members’ copremiums to health and welfare in 2018.”

According to countywide school district salary settlement reports listed on CUEA’s website, of the 27 school districts in Orange County, CUSD was the sixth highest-paying school district on average in 2012-13, but declined over the years to the 20th spot in 2016-17.

In the school district’s press release, CUSD’s offer was defended with statements about the “uncertainties of future state funding,” and the “very broken Local Control Funding Formula that was created in Sacramento.”

WHAT’S NEXT: CUSD and CUEA agreed to jointly file for impasse certification with the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB), according to the district’s release. A mediator will likely be assigned to help resolve the negotiations, which could take up to several months.

If the mediator and parties aren’t able to reach an agreement, the process continues to fact-finding, where a panel reviews the proposals and ultimately issues nonbinding recommendations.

result in an agreement, CUSD would be able to impose its last, best and final offer, and CUEA teachers would maintain the right to strike.

Fire on High Wildland fire burns 760 acres south of San Clemente

F

irefighters are investigating the cause of the blaze south of San Clemente that charred 760 acres of foliage from Wednesday, June 28, through Friday, June 30.

Camp Pendleton officials said on Monday that the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) coordinated with multiple agencies to assist in the effort against the fire.

OCFA spokesperson Larry Kurtz said there was no monetary damage in the fire, including the powerlines that were in the midst of the blaze.

“This is actually the only notable fire we’ve had this month,” Kurtz said. “Everything else has been spot fires.”

OCFA measures relative humidity and temperature and other factors each day.

Kurtz said the seasonal distinction of brushfires has disappeared, and that OCFA now combats fires constantly.

“It used to be there was a fire season, but most agencies don’t recognize seasons anymore because of climate change, and it’s become year-round for us,” Kurtz said.

“Although we had good precipitation (in winter), it’s created a great grass crop.

These look great in the spring, but you get this enormous fuel bed in the summer.

The fires get started easily and they move

very fast.”

At a rapid pace, the wildland fire spread to 400 acres large in a matter of a few hours on June 28, which was adjacent to the southernmost parts of San Clemente. The fire eventually crossed the San Clemente border.

Kurtz told the San Clemente Times the fire was stopped from moving toward homes as it had been earlier that day.

Camp Pendleton firefighters, Cal Fire, the U.S. Forest Service and Orange County Fire Authority sent a fleet of suppression units, engines, areal support and the Forest Service provided an overnight helicopter.

A maximum of 355 firefighters responded to the incident. The powerlines that were in danger of catching on fire were monitored by San Diego Gas and Electric.

Hundreds of people near the canyons on the south end of San Clemente came out to

witness the inferno, as chunks of burned foliage rained from the sky. The foliage blocked out a great deal of sunlight as fire suppression planes dropped retardant on the flames.

Initially, Camp Pendleton officials said the fire was about 10 to 15 acres. That changed in the following two hours when the Marine base reported it had grown to 250.

No home evacuations had been ordered for the San Clemente area, although the fire was seen less than a quarter mile from neighborhoods.

The cause of the fire has not yet been announced.

Winds may have been a factor in the fire’s rapid growth. Forecasts from Windfinder.com showed gusts of 10 miles per hour on June 28, based on the website’s San Clemente State Beach monitor. SC

Summer Days Show San Clemente at its Best

S

ummer is here and that is truly when San Clemente shines. As we come out of our “May Gray” and “June Gloom” into the bright sunny days of summer, San Clemente gets rolling into our summertime happenings.

Speaking of rolling, the new San Clemente Trolley rolled out Memorial Day Weekend and is now in full swing with a tremendous ridership of 50 people per hour. The Trolley makes the free rides getting to and from downtown, the Pier Bowl and along El Camino Real seem like an amusement park ride.

From grabbing a quick coffee at the Outlets at San Clemente to getting a snack at the end of the Pier, you can park the car and hop on to enjoy the ride and window-shop on your way. The free trolley is running Thursday through Sunday all summer long.

I’d like to give a shout out to Kindred & Associates for producing a trolley brochure that includes a map and schedule.

Letters to the Editor TOLL ROAD THROUGH SAN CLEMENTE DOES NOT MAKE SENSE JACK O’KEEFE, San Clemente

The proposed toll road through South Orange County has a plethora of reasons that prove it is a failure. Primarily, this road will bring numerous health concerns to the schools and residents within a short distance of the road with some coming even as close as 500 feet. Additionally, this brings the destruction of wildlife, which could be detrimental to the local ecosystem as well as destroy beautiful scenery for the citizens to enjoy, which includes a large number of hiking trails. As the proposed routes appear to be located within a very short distance of prime, coastal real estate, this will bring the value of homes down and in many cases, as San Clemente has a large retiree population, could potentially destroy some families’ only investment. The health concerns these roads bring come from the large amounts of ozone and particulate matter that vehicles emit; studies have shown that occurring in close ranges. With this in mind, the proposed route could bring about San Clemente Times July 6–12, 2017

the trolley route surrounded by discount coupons for local businesses that was published the week the trolley launched.

While you are enjoying that free ride on the SC Trolley around town, remember to support all of our local businesses. Most of our businesses in town are owned and operated by local residents who employ other local residents, so be neighborly and shop at a San Clemente location as you enjoy the city’s world-class summer weather.

In addition to the great summer weather, our city brings on some fantastic CITY COUNCIL summer events. Food, CORNER music, games, surfing,

Of course, our Farmer’s Market on Del Mar on Sundays and the Market at North Beach on Wednesdays are always a fun time to walk around and leisurely shop.

Be sure to mark your calendars for our city’s big summertime happenings. The Ocean Festival gets things into full swing this month on July 15 and 16. The Fiesta Music Festival on Sunday, Aug. 13 is a must-see event. Stroll up and down Del Mar sampling the goodies being sold as the music plays on. The following weekend is our Annual Arts and Crafts Show with more than 100 Artists participating at the Community Center. Be sure to hop on the SC Trolley, which stops right at the event site.

It looks to be a blissful San Clemente summer with a full bounty of things to do around town. Take advantage of this great place you call home. Stay, play, shop local and enjoy.

Back in 1977, the Happy Days character Fonzie “jumped the shark” on water skis. An over-the-top concept, signaling Happy Days had run out of “good” ideas. Since Fonzie’s leap, now known as “jumping the shark,” has come to represent bad ideas presented as good ideas, it’s a really bad idea.

Enter, the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) threatening to punch a toll road straight down Pico, through the heart of San Clemente? This is an idea so exasperatingly stupid, even Orange County politicians, long aligned with TCA, are calling foul.

For people who have not paid attention, TCA’s threatened Pico alignment is not new. This was first presented over a decade ago in an attempt to scare San Clementeans into approving TCA’s now-dead-and-buried

large amounts of noise pollution, which would disturb people from even greater distances. Additionally, Avenida La Pata, the northern route from San Clemente, is hardly ever crowded. That further proves there is no reason for an even larger road if there is no traffic in the first place. The toll road has proved the negative consequences far outweigh the positive leaving no reason to build an obstructive toll road.

Caltrans does. TCA doesn’t even manage toll collections; that’s outsourced too. TCA has nothing.

When Fonzie jumped the shark, Happy Days limped toward its final cancellation.

Let’s cancel TCA now. Its show is over. In fact, it’s embarrassing to watch. Abolish TCA.

At the Movies: ‘Baby Driver’ Is an Epic Throwback

pon TriStar dropping the trailer for Baby Driver, many found that the new Edgar Wright actioncomedy might be a farce on Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive (2011)—which itself was inspired by Walter Hill’s The Driver (1978), all of which have been influenced by Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver (1976). Wright, who coined the cult classic Cornetto trilogy with Shaun of the Dead (2004), Hot Fuzz (2007) and The World’s End (2013), shows once again how to pay homage while placing a personal touch on a film.

In downtown Atlanta, Georgia, a young getaway driver, named “Baby” (Ansel Elgort), listens to various playlists on his classic iPod while driving criminals around to pay off a debt to his boss,

Doc (Kevin Spacey). Baby constantly listens to music and makes his own remixes on cassette as a way to drown out his mild tinnitus. While on his supposed last gig with Doc, Baby meets a cute waitress named Debora (Lily James) and a villainous thief called Bats (Jamie Foxx) new to the team.

Jon Hamm and Eiza Gonzalez co-star as partners in crime and love on Doc’s crew. Baby Driver is one epic throwback flick to pop culture, music and technology from yesteryear. Very little new tech devices are featured in the film and include iPods, flip phones, cassettes and tape recorders. Along with that, the soundtrack is retro and completely sets the pace for the fast action and clever humor. Like all of Wright’s films, Driver is niche, but also accessible for all audiences. SC

hen asked about a sequence of unexpected setbacks that sent many of her competitors home in frustration during a trip to Antarctica, where she competed in a marathon, Beth Sanden responded with what could be seen as a metaphor for her entire outlook on life.

“I mean, it’s Antarctica. You never know what can you expect.” Sanden said.

Sanden, a San Clemente resident for more than 30 years, will be the featured speaker at the San Onofre Parks Foundation Summer Lecture Series on Wednesday, July 12. Although anecdotes such as these will certainly be prevalent, “What to Do When Your Whole Life Changes in 60 Seconds” will offer more than a retrospective account of Sanden’s achievements.

In fact, Sanden tries to distance herself from the past.

“I’m really focused on paying it forward,” Sanden said when asked to summarize her driving motivation. “What a gift to be able to give mobility, to enable people physically as well as mentally.”

in San Clemente that left Sanden with shattered vertebrae and paraplegia, her focus and motivation have defied medical expectations.

Sanden says that she’s “…done more since the accident than before it.” She has completed more than 69 marathons and 72 triathlons on all seven continents.

For most people it would seem difficult to follow in her tracks, but that is exactly what she plans on enabling people to do.

“I want to show people ethat there is a life to live after (suffering from) a disability,” Sanden said. “People with disabilities can live a life full of wonderful experiences.”

Bringing equipment to outposts across the world and providing physical and educational assistance, Sanden has focused on empowering people who want to continue prospering after suffering from a traumatic accident or illness.

Having traveled the world, spreading her message of hope and resilience, Sanden is quick to credit the invaluable support of her family, friends and community.

“The community and the willingness are there; we just need to capitalize on the opportunities,” Sanden said in reference to supporting our disabled local community.

Sanden will speak at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12, at the Historic Cottage within the San Clemente State Beach Campground. The lecture series is put on by the San Onofre Parks Foundation and sponsored by Artifex Brewing Co. and BK Cellars. ven with “June Gloom,” great white sharks and raging wildfires, summer is a glorious time for parents, young people and those of us who work in schools. We all get time to sleep in, refresh, and prepare to return to school energized.

So, what is it that makes both youth and adults so joyful in the summer months?

For teens, sleeping late seems to be a favorite summer activity, with laying on the beach a close second. Research shows that teens’ body clocks are not set for the school schedules they must adhere to, so it is important to let them have the summer to follow their natural bio-rhythms, trying not to worry too much when they sleep the morning away. Just be aware of the need to start shifting the clock back to school hours a week or two before Aug. 22.

Many parents tell me they feel very liberated by not having to wake their children up and get them going in the morning and being able to take a break from nagging about homework and other school-related activities. I encourage parents to extend this freedom into the school year and turn more of the school work responsibilities back to their teen. Try not to check school loop daily and let your child learn to manage deadlines and tests. This is a skill they must learn on their own, and a few bad grades is enough of a natural consequence for most teens to motivate themselves to do better.

All of us seem to luxuriate in the extra hours of daylight, when we can sit at the beach and enjoy the sunsets, take a long walk after dinner, and savor time with our family and friends. There is no better time than summer to take breaks from our cellphones and computers, reconnect when there are fewer responsibilities, and remember how lucky we are to live in

Southern California. Once again, an important reminder to carve out little moments during the hectic school year to unplug and kick back even for a few hours.

Wellness takes both intention and gratitude. The summer provides more opportunities to live with these intentions and to be thankful for our Southern California lifestyle. Enjoy the extra fresh summer produce at our two farmer’s markets, attend a yoga class overlooking the ocean, have a staycation that honors family time and slow down. Before summer ends, pledge to take this intention and gratitude into the school year, which will benefit the entire family.

Rock and Roll Social media hunt for stones draws interest

STEVEN NEIL YATES Unforgettable to anyone who crossed his path, Steven Neil Yates of San Clemente, CA died of sudden but natural causes on May 19th, 2017 at the age of 61.

Steve was born to Alan and Marilyn Yates in Simsbury, CT, growing up with a strong commitment to family and an intimate love of nature. For over a decade Steve served as the Director of Sales and Marketing at the skiing-snow publication Powder Magazine, notably joining a mischievous and distinguished crew of talented skiiers and friends as they travelled across the world documenting their skilled (and outrageously costumed) exploits.

Steve fell in love and started a family, moving to San Clemente in 1991 and forming his own marketing agency along the way. He went on to create and run a series of successful small businesses, including Innovative Earth Products, Senior Life Health, and Zen Cases, which continue to thrive to this day.

Steve brought deep amounts of playfulness, commitment, and generosity to all of his relationships. He strived to have it all, to continue the legacy of his own father and be the best dad, partner, family member and friend he could be. After raising two beloved children, forming lifelong friendships, establishing successful companies, and finding true love multiple times, Steve so clearly accomplished this goal. He even got himself the MG and Austin Healey cars his teenage self only dreamed of owning (a joy

San Clemente locals probably got to witness as Steve zoomed on by, rain or shine.)

Steve is survived by his children Zack and Alli, their mother and his former wife Kathy, his siblings Linda, Sandra and Douglas, his girlfriend Paula, and many important loved ones. It’s hard to list all of the people who Steve leaves behind, both because there are so many of us, and because we know he is still with us in countless ways - in the cool breezes, stones and birdsongs we find at dusk, the wild costumes and communities we keep close, and of course, in the endless love we hold. We are forever changed by you Steve, and we love you so much.

Briana Denney, a San Clemente resident and interior designer by trade, started the group San Clemente Rocks, where people can decorate rocks with social media information attached to them.

“My son, Desmond, and I were walking the beach trail and he found a rock from another rock club in Washington,” Briana said. “I thought it would be fun to start something like this in San Clemente.”

People can participate by painting the rocks with the club’s message on the back.

“If you find me, please post a picture of me on our Facebook page, San Clemente Rocks” is the message.

“You can keep the rock, share it with someone else or re-hide it,” Briana said.

“Through social media and the Facebook page, we’ve had a lot of responses.”

The rock search has been likened to geocaching, but it’s not quite the same. There is no GPS or land coordinates involved in the process. Some of the rocks will have riddles or esoteric messages written on them for participants to find the next rock.

Briana said she would like to organize larger community events based around finding different rocks in various locations.

“I think the most exciting thing that’s happening right now is that we’re collaborating with other community organizations to provide workshops for local teens and we’re going to be fundraising with local charities,” Briana said.

Briana said she doesn’t hide her own rocks in difficult-to-find spots, but some of the group members have become very crafty with their hiding.

As of Wednesday, July 5, the Facebook group had 365 members. It is a closed group for safety purposes. Denney said they’ve had 100 new members join in the last week.

In addition to the group enjoying the collector’s aspect, Briana said a few parents have approached her about getting their child away from the television and video games for a bit.

The organization from Washington state Briana is following is called Fidalgo Island Rocks, a group with more than 2,700 members that has hosted similar silent auctions and other events.

“There’s so many people who are excited about this club that I figured we could put it to good use,” Briana said. “I get to sit down with my family and paint for a bit. It really does brighten people’s day. And it’s bringing together the community, and it touches my heart a little bit to see that.”

WEST COAST FC TEAM QUALIFIES FOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS The West Coast Futbol Club’s U18 squad continued its excellent club soccer season by winning its division at the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional tournament last week.

The Far West Regional tournament, which was held in Washington, draws teams from as far away as Idaho and Hawaii, and includes the entire state of California.

The local team, which draws players from San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, went 2-1 in pool play. West Coast FC shined in the knockout rounds, winning their final three games in the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship match by a combined margin of 7-1. West Coast FC defeated WPFC 99 Black out of Washington 4-0 in the tournament final.

West Coast FC U18 will head to the 2017 U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Frisco, Texas on July 24.

n just his second competition in the California Amateur Skateboarding League, San Clemente’s Conan Craig picked up his first victory and is shining bright on the big stage.

Craig, a 12-year-old who attends Shorecliffs Middle School, finished first overall in the street division at the Streetlab CASL event in Simi Valley on June 25.

Craig, who has been skateboarding since he was two-years-old, also finished second at the Vans Huntington Beach CASL spot on May 20.

During his second run at the Streetlab event, Craig took a nasty spill and banged his knee against the ground. After taking a few seconds to collect himself, he rallied to land the trick he first attempted and picked up crucial points that helped propel him to the win.

“I took a big slam to my knee,” Craig said. “On my first trick back in I did a tre flip off of an A-frame and landed it. It felt great.”

Craig has been honing his skills at the Element Skate Camp in Visalia. In the camp’s Advanced Division competition on June 22, Craig took second place.

skating, which features riders jumping over, grinding and doing aerial tricks on natural or man-made parks. The freedom to flow through a run is what keeps Craig interested in the sport.

“Street skating is fun and you can create any spot or trick that you want,” he said.

Craig plans on competing in five more CASL events this summer, and is looking forward to competing in the SC Open skate competition in September. SC

Peru Not Polynesia?

Rethinking the heritage of surfing and its culture

ood for thought, as we celebrate Independence Day and all of the nostalgia and heritage it invokes, South Orange County is considered by surf historians to be the birthplace of the surf industry. Grubby Clark, Hobie Alter, Dale Velzy, Bruce Brown, the list of luminaries from the 1950s and 1960s runs long.

Reason enough to celebrate, but those gents wouldn’t be the legends that they are without their Hawaiian forefathers, who conceivably “invented” surfing.

But maybe they didn’t. Maybe surfing is more South American than Polynesian?

Last year, I had the opportunity to edit a new book on the history of surfing. Not your typical yarn about the islands, the Duke and all the Polynesian flattery, the book, titled 5,000 Years of Waves: A History of Surfing in Peru, details the 5,000-year history of wave riding dating to pre-Inca cultures. The contention is that surfing in Peru predates surfing in Polynesia by hundreds, if not thousands of years. Based on archeological records, Peruvian fishermen began riding reed crafts called “tups” or “caballito de totora” around 800-600 B.C. Some of the earliest records of “he`e nalu,” or wave sliding, in Hawaii is traced back to

the 15th century A.D. “Traditionally, the origin of surfing is attributed to former members of Hawaiian royalty, who surfed on wooden boards they built themselves with native materials they found on the islands. Therefore, the art of surfing is recognized as the “sport of kings,” and most of its modern history, often based on studies done at the Bishop Museum in Hawaii, tends to establish its origins in the blue waters of Oahu and the surrounding islands,” writes author Roberto Meza. “However, for several decades, developments in the field of pre-Columbian archeology have revolutionized the traditional theory of the origin of the art of surfing. By studying the cultures of the coast of Peru, as highly developed as the ancient Egyptian civilizations, evidence proves that these men developed surfing thousands of years ago. Such is the case of the recent discovery of the ruins of Caral, which dates back five thousand years ago.”

Meza details how two ancient Peruvian cultures, the Mochica and Chimu, could be where surfing actually began. Iconography in archeological remains found in the Huaca Cao Viejo in the El Brujo complex show endless sequences of waves. Archeologists believe the waves represented the movement, strength and power of the sea as a source of life. The economic and social development of the Mochica and Chimu cultures was linked to fishing: they turned the Pacific Ocean into one of the largest fisheries in the world. They devised their own styles of art, social organization and construction of large cities and pyramidal complexes. During that time, fish was the main source of protein in the diet of an estimated one hundred thousand inhabitants

of the city of Chan Chan.

“The Mochica and Chimu cultures faced the challenge of living alongside a powerful coastline, exposing them most of the year to larger swells. Just imagine the endless sets of waves at a place like Chicama—a fishing and surf town in Northern Peru,” writes Meza. “One of the best waves in the surfing world, it is located south of the excavations of Lambayeque, where one of the most lavish and rich tombs of the Americas and the Lord of Sipán, was discovered a few years ago. The first men who experienced the pleasure of surfing were fishermen who had to face the power of waves in order to get their food. The necessary courage resulted in a rite of passage, similar to other warrior rituals or traditions found throughout history.”

Over time, Peruvian sailors found their way to the islands of Rapa Nui (also known as Easter Island). From there the early settlers of Rapa Nui were able to make forays into Polynesia and, allegedly, spread the concept of riding waves.

“Once the fisherman had experienced the delights of surfing, he’d dip into the sea from time to time for the pure and simple pleasure of catching a few good waves,” contends Meza. “It is undeniable that the most skilled fishermen felt proud of their abilities and strength to face the sea. Culturally, their skills immediately placed them in the select social group of expert fishermen. It should not surprise us to learn that contests and competitions were held to see who the best fishermen challenging the sea were. Paddling and crossing over foam, they rode waves in ritual and competitive events, similar to the ancient Greek Olympics.” SC

There aren’t a lot of 13-year-old kids that go around quoting former NFL coach Dick Vermeil, but then Aidan Pearce isn’t most kids.

The Shorecliffs Middle School student is charging to the beat of his own drum— and it’s epic. Recently highlighted by the Gudauskas brothers’ Positive Vibe Warriors for his abundant stoke level, at a very early age Pearce has learned a valuable lesson about the power of positive thinking. Of course, you can find him frothing at T Street and working on his hacks and rail game, but when asked where he sees himself in a few years, his answer is nothing short of inspiring.

“In 2020, my goal is to be volunteering to help spread the stoke to every human being,” Pierce said.

Forget contest results, big waves or small waves, longboards or shortboards, with his heart in the right place, surfing is going to take Pierce wherever he dreams, which, if you ask him, is Cloudbreak in Fiji. www.sanclementetimes.com
