Five things San Clemente should know this week Boy, 9, Taken to OC Burn Center After Stepping in Fire Ring at T Street THE LATEST: A 9-year-old boy is being treated at Orange County Global Medical Center’s burn center in Santa Ana after he accidentally stepped into a cement fire ring that contained smoldering embers on Friday, Aug. 4, near T Street Beach, according to officials with Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA).

Capt. Steve Concialdi, a spokesperson for OCFA, said the boy and his family were at the beach around 6:30 p.m. when the boy was playing and started jumping on and off the edges of the fire ring. At one point, the boy stepped into the fire ring and received second- and third-degree burns to his right leg and foot.

Concialdi said it’s more than likely that the boy was burned by smoldering embers of a fire left by another person or people, as the family said they had not started their own fire and no hot glow or flames were visible in the bright sunlight. The boy was taken by ambulance by OCFA to a nearby landing spot for Mercy Air Services and flown to the Santa Ana burn center, where he was submitted in moderate condition, but he is expected to survive and did not lose any extremities, Concialdi said.

WHAT’S NEXT: Fire rings that are dotted across the beaches are under the jurisdiction of the city of San Clemente, where San Clemente Marine Safety Division officials will periodically empty them. “The message we want to send out to people is that you should never play around a fire ring,” Concialdi said.

Marine Safety Officer Ian Burton said even if the fires are out, people who bring their own fire-containing devices must dump out hot embers into the fire rings before they leave the beach. Fire containers are legal, but they must be equipped with legs, according to city ordinance.

The fire rings are as much a gathering spot as they are a safety deposit for hot coals or wood, as required by the city.

“People burn wood pallets that still have nails in them,” Burton said. “The wood burns, but the nails remain, so it’s never a good idea to play around them. Glass and other things also get in there, unfortunately. You never know. You could be San Clemente Times August 10-16, 2017

down there at 10 a.m., and someone’s fire from the night before may still be burning under the ashes. You also can’t know how deep it is.”

Concialdi said anyone who has experienced severe burns should call for medical attention and seek treatment at a nearby burn center. —Eric Heinz

City Correcting Homeless Shelter Plan, Seeks to have injunction Lifted THE LATEST: Under a requirement from the state’s Housing and Community Development Department, the city of San Clemente’s 2013-2017 housing element was approved on July 24. The housing element, which is the city’s mandated plan for residential planning, had to be updated after the city was successfully sued for not having adequate space for an emergency or homeless shelter.

The city is working to correct and comply with an Orange County Superior Court injunction that currently prohibits issuing commercial permits in certain portions of the city. The injunction was issued earlier this year after a judge found the city had not adequately complied with an order to provide more space for an emergency or homeless shelter, a lawsuit brought forth by the Emergency Shelter Coalition in 2014.

Under Senate Bill 2, cities are required to provide the adequate space.

The city must also submit its 2017-2021 housing element to the state by Oct. 10. It is scheduled to be heard by City Council in the next month and should reflect the orders set by the court.

The city had established areas for a shelter, but only on city property, which wasn’t satisfactory to the coalition.

At previous meetings, city officials said

there is an estimated need of about 70 beds for homeless people in San Clemente.

The latest order, signed July 20, mandates the city cannot go forward with any plans or permits regarding the Miramar Theater, which was approved by the planning commission about a month ago.

Although no permits or anything else had been solidified, the judge decided the city needs to comply with the order before moving forward. The Miramar Theater is located in the injunction zone.

WHAT’S NEXT: A hearing is scheduled for Sept. 8 in Orange County Superior Court regarding the order to not move forward with permits for the Miramar, but City Attorney Scott Smith said because the first housing element has been approved, the city will try to get the injunction lifted and show the court that it has complied. —EH

Man Struck and Killed Walking on I-5 in San Clemente THE LATEST: A man was struck by two vehicles and died as a result of his injuries on Sunday, Aug. 6, according to a press release from California Highway Patrol of the San Juan Capistrano Area.

The man was reportedly walking in one of the lanes of traffic when he was first struck at 11:50 p.m. by a driver from Lindsay, California, and immediately struck again by a driver from Cleveland, Ohio.

WHAT’S NEXT: The name of the man who was struck and killed has not been released, but Officer Rafael Reynoso, public information officers for CHP’s San Juan Capistrano area, said the man was described as a transient, but officers are still

THE LATEST: Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) has started the public process of changing its bus routes in order to rearrange routes based on ridership.

“In 2015, the OCTA Board of Directors launched OC Bus 360, a plan that examines bus service from all angles,” according to a press release from Orange County Supervisor Lisa Bartlett. “During the initial implementation of this comprehensive plan, OC Bus 360 provided better service in high-demand areas by reallocating existing resources, improved passenger experiences through technology, stimulated ridership with pricing changes, and created fresh marketing and branding to attract new riders.”

During the last change of bus service routes, San Clemente saw two of its routes cut, the 191 that went from San Clemente up to Mission Viejo, and the 193 that traveled around the city.

The new systems are planned to be approved by the OCTA board in February 2018, which is expected to enhance evening, weekday and weekend service “on several routes and reduce service on others with low demand.”

“In addition, service on some Stationlink and express routes will be reduced or eliminated due to low ridership,” the releases stated. “Services and resources can be reallocated to high-demand areas to reduce travel times and serve more people.”

ecades have passed since the inaugural San Clemente Fiesta Music Festival, but the party still continues 64 years later.

Sponsored by the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce, Fiesta takes over Avenida Del Mar from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for a full Sunday of rock, reggae and country music as well as other food, fun and games.

Chuck Narey, the chairman of the Fiesta Music Festival, said the event started in the 1950s and was originally called the Fiesta de la Cristianita Pageant. It was primarily a local gathering of people that eventually bloomed into a formalized music-centric event in the 1970s and 1980s.

Once Rita Coolidge performed at the Festival, more and more bands followed, although the focus on being a local’s-only event has persisted through the years.

With thousands of attendees expected to dance through the streets of Del Mar this year, additional parking will be provided at the San Clemente High School, located at 700 Avenida Pico. Concert goers are also encouraged to take the city’s free trolley service for transportation to downtown. Salsa Challenge, Action Sports and Beach Lifestyle Expo and More The Salsa Challenge may be one of the most competitive side-dish events in the city. Restaurants and individuals vie for the chance to be claimed the best salsa connoisseur in San Clemente. There will be awards given by the judges for restaurants and individuals, first through fourth place, as well as the people’s choice. Public tasting starts at 10 a.m. and winners are announced at 4 p.m. at Stage 3.

The Fiesta includes an array of fabulous food. The food is all provided by local nonprofit organizations. Money spent on food at Fiesta goes back to the local community and contributes to many philanthropic programs. The fiesta action sports and beach lifestyle expo is dedicated to the action sports industry, providing a venue for buyers and manufactures to meet, sell, buy, exchange ideas, market and network.

Happenstance Listed under ‘H’ in the Phonebook

I

n 1960, I sat alone in my law office one Saturday afternoon. I had been a solo practitioner almost a year, right out of law school. My one checkbook had a balance of forty bucks after paying all my bills. Although my account receivables totaled $4,000, the folks that owed me didn’t have money. How would I take care of next month’s bills?

That’s when I concluded I must find a job and close up my practice. I dreaded the thought of working for someone else.

But I scanned the ads in the newspaper and circled a couple. I leaned back in my chair and thought, “Sillas, you gave it a good ride but your luck ran out. It’s time to find a job and make money. Babies need new shoes.”

Cora, my wife, and I and our two little daughters, Debbie and Monica, lived in an old run-down house in a barrio near San Fernando Road in Los Angeles. Debbie was 3 and Monica was less than a year old.

Cora allowed me to pursue the dream of having my own practice, but was entitled to have a roof over her head and food on the table. Monday, I’d start calling for job interviews.

That evening as we finished our dinner, the phone rang. It was my phone exchange calling. Would I take a call from a young lady on the phone who needed a lawyer? Sure. The young voice said her boyfriend had been arrested for armed robbery and was in jail. Would I go see him and get him out? she asked. I kissed Cora goodbye as I headed out the door telling her I was on my way to the jail.

The young redheaded boyfriend claimed to be innocent. He signed a $500 retainer agreement and gave me the name and address of his mother who he said would pay me. She did, with $250 cash and a check for the balance. I was whistling as I drove home that evening. Next month had THE VIEW just been taken care of.

Many years later, I met a young lawyer on a case. We were on the opposite sides, but we were able to settle. He called me later and asked if we could have lunch together. I said, “Sure.” We met for lunch a couple days later. The attorney worked for a large firm but wanted to have his own practice. His wife was concerned about making the change. I suggested that we and our spouses meet for dinner and she could ask all the questions she had. We did meet for dinner. His wife was concerned about her husband’s ability to get the clients needed to support them. I related my story of the phone call I had received years before when I thought of leaving my practice. When I finished the story, Cora said, “You never told me that.”

I was startled. But she was right.

“I didn’t want to tell you before dinner and before we finished dinner, I got the phone call. When I came back from the jail, I was rich.” We all laughed.

The young fellow opened his law office and maintained a very successful practice.

God showed me how he was taking care of me. It was my turn to help others. That’s the view from the pier.

What an interesting revelation to learn from Mayor Pro Tem Tim Brown of the deal struck between Save San Onofre Coalition (SSOC) and the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA), as mentioned in the Aug. 3-9 edition of the San Clemente Times. The settlement agreement reimburses SSOC’s legal expenses, so they will forgo further opposition of any other alignment of the toll road. SSOC will be awarded $28 million for their coalition San Clemente Times August 10-16, 2017

that negatively impact a large swath of the public.

Mike Kraman, the CEO of the TCA, stated on July 19 that, “It’s unfortunate that the city of San Clemente is choosing litigation over collaboration. This isn’t the way the public expects government agencies to solve issues.”

No, Mr. Kraman, that’s exactly how the public expects its government to deal with private agencies, when private agencies have turned a deaf ear to the public’s strong disapproval to your proposed toll road.

Kraman has done everything in his power to attempt to silence us by using suppressive tactics. This is not what we expect of a person supposedly working for the entire public’s best transportation interests.

fund, if/when a toll road is built anywhere outside of their “Avoidance Area.” This “award” for silence is hypocritical for an “environmental” coalition to sell-out to a private agency. SSOC needs to fight for the environmental impacts that affect others in their own city.

And how is it that the TCA, a quasigovernment agency, has gained the powers that it has, with such little oversight? Where are the checks and balances provided by the very basic of the municipal, county and state government when it comes to the TCA? Government officials work for us; we may not agree with their decisions—we have the voting booth to voice our displeasure. The TCA board of directors work for the agencies’ shareholders’ own interests, and there is no public remedy against board decisions

DO SOMETHING ABOUT EMPTY SOUTH EL CAMINO REAL PROPERTIES MIKE ZALKE, San Clemente

I have lived in Southwest San Clemente for the last 13 years and for the last 10 years I have looked at two empty fenced lots that used to house a Mobil station and a Top Tune. In addition to the property being an eyesore, I often wonder what could be done with all the empty lots. As you look down El Camino Real, it looks more like a graveyard of old gas stations than a Spanish Village by the Sea. I think it’s time for our City Council to really think about this issue. If we want our property values in our city to continue to grow, we need to clean up our gateway to our city.

If the city has decided to never let anything be built on these properties, let’s turn them into parks. How beautiful would it be to walk along El Camino Real, stopping along the way to enjoy ocean views, visit with our neighbors and take pride in our city? I realize parks do not bring revenue into a city and cost money to maintain, but I also know that higher property values bring in more tax dollars. The next time you exit El Camino, look around and ask yourself, “does this look like a beautiful Spanish Village Bye the Sea?”

I think there needs to be a reference border for South Orange County. Let’s call everything south of Mission Viejo the “Deep South.” The closer to north San Diego County, the deeper you are.

That said, we in the Deep South of our dear Orange County do not have a commuter-traffic congestion problem.

The weekday commuter congestion starts in Mission Viejo at Crown Valley and continues northbound when thousands of people living east and west of the I-5 enter the freeway. No way do those of us in the Deep South begin to have the impact on the northbound I-5 as those coming from east and west of Crown Valley (and, of course the 74 dumping onto the I-5 at Ortega). The southbound, weekend congestion that we do experience in the Deep South results from the “let’s go to San Diego/ Mexico” weekend drivers. County is not an Orange County problem, and there is no toll road that can alleviate it—especially one that actually dumps more cars onto southbound I-5. God bless the United States Marine Corps. I love being neighbors with Camp Pendleton.

However, if there is an accident between San Clemente and Oceanside, there is no alternative route around Camp Pendleton.

It is all common sense. I cannot understand how any traffic engineer could possibly imagine how a toll road that dumps traffic into the Deep South would alleviate the northbound commuter congestion that starts in Mission Viejo or the weekend congestion heading to San Diego County.

After much consideration and thought, I have decided to withdraw my support for district elections. The reasons are simple: it would be too distracting, given all the other issues facing our community, and most importantly, having seen how the Transportation Corridor Agencies board works, where we only have one representative on the board, I am afraid that the way the district initiative is written would create the same issues here. I remain deeply committed to having no toll road through San Clemente and no toll road through South Orange County and the San Onofre State Park. I also remain committed to other issues such as increasing law enforcement throughout our community to deal with the fallout from Props. 47 and 57 and supporting our deputies through SCALE (San Clemente Alliance for Law Enforcement) and the weekly “snack” program for our deputies.

At the Movies: ‘Detroit’ Offers Mixed Emotional Experience’

uly 25 marked the 50th anniversary of the three murders at the Algiers Motel in Detroit. So it was purposely chosen as the premiere date of the new biopic made on the incident. The film, simply titled Detroit, had everything going for it. An Oscar-winning director in Kathryn Bigelow, a Star Wars lead in John Boyega, critical darling Will Poulter, etc. But surprisingly, the feature is a huge mixed bag of emotions.

The movie begins with a history recap on the riots that were building up between oppressed black locals of Detroit and the white citizens, particularly the white policemen. One cop in particular, Phil Krauss (Poulter), is just looking to pick a fight. He gets his moment when a gunshot is heard by a local motel and his squad takes advantage of the situation and harasses seven black men—played by Algee Smith, Jacob Latimore and Anthony Mackie as a few— and two young white women—portrayed

Kevin Nealon has been making people laugh for decades, whether it was on shows like Saturday Night Live or with his various film appearances and stand-up comedy.

Nealon actually began his career as a stand-up comedian, which he said he enjoys because of the creative freedom and immediate gratification live performances entail.

“I like being in a room with a lot of people—the laughter and energy is a lot of fun,” he said.

Audience members at the Coach House will have a chance to enjoy Nealon’s standup—complete with plenty of dry wit— on Saturday, Aug. 26, his first show in San Juan Capistrano.

Boyega appears as the only black policeman at the scene. Detroit’s biggest weakness is ultimately the script. This is a shock, as it’s the same writing-directing team who brought us successes The Hurt Locker (2008) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012): Mark Boal and Bigelow. Some of the dialogue is unpredictably corny and the pacing feels off during the first and third acts. The themes are filmed too on-the-nose, especially in our current political climate. Still, the performances, especially from Poulter and Smith, make it worth a viewing. SC Nealon’s extensive work, he’s well-known for his nine-year stint as a cast member on Saturday Night Live (1986-1995). In addition to creating memorable characters like Mr. Subliminal and Hans and Franz, Nealon’s reoccurring role as an anchor on “Weekend Update” cemented the sketch as a staple of the show.

Later on in his career, Nealon received critical acclaim for his role as Doug Wilson in the Showtime series, Weeds. Beyond his numerous TV and film appearances, Nealon has also created two stand-up specials for Showtime, and in 2008, he released his first book, Yes, You’re Pregnant, But What About Me?—a comical look at the male perspective of pregnancy. Currently, the Los Angeles-based comedian can be seen on the new CBS sitcom, Man with a Plan.

When asked about the comics who have most influenced his career, Nealon said Steve Martin, Andy Kauffman, Albert Brooks and Garry Shandling have all inspired him with their unique sense of humor and the risks they have taken with their comedy.

Nealon added that, for him, finding his voice as a stand-up comedian has come with time and life experience.

“I think it’s about evolving as a person,” he said. “Like a blues musician, you have to live a little bit. When you’re first starting out, you emulate somebody. But then you develop your own style.”

‘Surfbeat’ with Randy Nauert Musical guest to speak at final San Onofre Parks Foundation Summer Lecture Series

andy Nauert and his band, The Challengers, changed the course of music forever when they released their album Surfbeat in the early months of 1963, selling more than 200,000 copies. With Southern California responsible for roughly 10 percent of worldwide record sales at that time, in today’s world, The Challengers would have, theoretically, sold millions. The San Onofre Parks Foundation, in its final Summer Lecture Series event of the 2017 season, presents “Surfbeat” on Wednesday, Aug. 16, featuring guest speaker Nauert, bassist of The Challengers.

“San Onofre is a great place to surf,” Nauert said. “I first met John Severson when I was a 10th-grader and John showed his movie Surf Safari at our high school.

Afterwards, I showed John a cartoon story that my friend and I were working on, Murphy and the Surf Contest. About a year later, John started his magazine, Surfer, and Rick Griffin redrew the story in Surfer’s first issues. More than a decade later, John came

to me to provide music for his last surf movie called Pacific Vibrations. During the scoring of the film, John, Rick Griffin and I surfed in front of Severson’s house next door to Richard Nixon’s on Cottons Point.

Musically, Nauert is credited with being one of the first to incorporate the electric bass guitar and its driving rhythm to the

“dance” music of the era. This new-found pulse, found throughout Surfbeat’s tracks, took coastal California and the world by storm.

The son of an Olympic springboard diver, Nauert grew up in the South Bay of Los Angeles. As a surfer in the Palos Verdes and Manhattan Beach communities of the 1950s, Nauert quickly joined the ranks of iconic figures such as Noll, Griffin, Severson, and Duke Kahanamoku.

Able to quickly transition between incredible stories of wave-chasing, art-creation and record selling, Nauert’s lecture promises to entertain.

Seniors Should Reveal Their True Age on Dating Profiles

n my previous column, I wrote about Dave, 81, a widower, who said he had a quandary. He looks 15 years younger than his age. Dave commented, “Several online dating sites advised me to adjust my age downward on my profile, then communicate my true age upfront when there is a connection.”

I wrote that I thought it was okay that he lower his age by a few years on his profile.

Dave felt justified to do so. Later, he wrote, “In the last year, on a top dating ON LIFE AND site, I have encountered LOVE AFTER 50 women who have posted

These same women posted pictures taken from three to 15 years ago.

“One woman confided, ‘If I had posted my current picture, you would not have wanted to meet for lunch.’”

Five women responded to my quasi-approval of him lying about his age. Four were adamant about revealing one’s true age on dating profiles.

Sarah said: “I would suggest that somewhere in his script on the dating site, Dave indicate that he is a young 81-year-old and full of vitality in lieu of telling an untruth. He needs to be as he expects, and I doubt he expects or wants a woman to lie about her age, or anything else for that matter.”

lying about their age or anything on the dating site is always a red flag for me, and as soon as I find out the truth, which may be in the first email back and forth, I drop the person.

“I am 68 and look not more than 50, I am told. I am proud of that and feel lucky and, also work at maintaining that. I would rather have a man tell me how good I look for my age than have him deal with how easily a lie can roll off my tongue and wonder what else I will lie about later.

“I am probably getting off the sites forever after my free six months with Match.com is over. Even though I know people who met on Match.com and got married, I think it’s such a needle in a haystack that it’s not worth the trouble. If I ever meet someone, it will be very random, like when looking at vegetables at Trader Joe’s.”

Karen, 63, wrote, “Please advise Dave to be truthful about his age on dating sites.

When my girlfriends and I find out a man has lied on his profile, we eliminate him from possibility. If he’s lied about one thing, everything else he’s said is suspect, too. Truth is always the best. He will attract a great, honest woman if he keeps his faith!”

Christine Baumgartner, an Orange County dating and relationship coach, said, “When I coach my clients, I tell them to always tell the truth about themselves including their age.

It’s very important not to lie.

“When you write in your profile and include all the facets of yourself, who you are will show through. If you are 70 and look,

feel and act 60, then your photographs and what you write should reflect this.

“If you don’t include your activities, hobbies, and interests, how will anyone reading your profile know the age you feel? Don’t just say you feel young or your friends say you look young, prove it with your words that describe your life.”

One woman, Dana, however, thought lying about age is no big deal. She commented, “If you look young, I see nothing wrong with saying maybe you are five to eight-years younger. Catch the fish, then in person, you can disclose your real age if you like the person. There are worse things to lie about like health issues.”

My position has changed. I was wrong and I think the four women were right.

Senior daters, when writing your dating profile or stating your age, make it your true age. That’s what honest senior daters want to know.

Pickleball Sweeping San Clemente Professional coach offers weekly instruction on fast-growing game

T

he fact that anyone can play pickleball is what drew Capistrano Beach resident Buzz Buster to the similarto-tennis sport. Buster, who is 81 years old, wanted to maintain his active lifestyle.

“I’ve played sports my whole life. I’m 81 now, and it’s hard for people in my age bracket to continue to play sports like basketball and tennis. Pickleball has been wonderful. I play all over the area,” Buster said.

Pickleball resembles life-size ping pong, or tennis in slow motion. Pickleball’s smaller court, which is roughly one-third the size of a regulation tennis court, requires less ground to be covered during gameplay. The game is also easy to understand, which allows newcomers to play immediately. The size of the court, along with the subtle mix of technique, strategy and athleticism, allows Pickleball to be competitive and fun for a wide range of players, including its rapid growth and appeal to the baby boomer generation.

professional tennis player, president of the United States Professional Pickleball Association and San Clemente resident Raudel Barba. Barba believes the sport has major potential to take flight in town.

“With Pickleball, it’s so easy to have fun and remain competitive. I think it’s why it is so appealing to the baby boomer generation,” Barba said. “The very nature of the game allows for multiple skill levels to play together. You can’t say that for a lot of other sports.”

Due to its growing popularity and ease of play, Barba offers instructional Pickleball classes through the City of San Clemente Beaches, Parks and Recreation Department every Wednesday at San Gorgonio Park.

attending Barba’s instructional classes.

“I’m not a gym person. I’ve always just gotten my exercise from being active outside,” Masters said. “I love Pickleball because I forget I am getting such a good workout. It’s so easy to have a good time.”

Masters, along with many others, have taken lessons with Barba through the City of San Clemente Parks and Recreation.

Barba believes around 200 people have attended the weekly sessions in San Clemente since the class began.

Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo and Laguna Woods are some of the surrounding cities with devoted Pickleball followings. Some cities even have official Pickleball courts, which is something Barba would like to see happen in San Clemente. Currently, Raudel and his players have to outline Pickleball courts in chalk on the San Gorgonio Park tennis court surfaces.

Aside from offering a fun physical outlet for participants, Barba said a social aspect of Pickleball is an added bonus to the class.

“We come and we play and then we get together afterwards, maybe grab dinner or a beer and talk,” Barba said. “We’ll have 15 to 20 people all go out together after a practice session or tournament.”

Starting Wednesday, Sept. 6, Barba will offer two, distinctly different four-week Pickleball classes. Cost for the beginner class is $60. The strategy and round robin class, designed for more intermediate players, is $82. Cost includes four weekly classes. Classes will meet on Wednesdays at San Gorgonio Park. Beginner classes are from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., and intermediate classes are from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sign up is available only through the City of San Clemente Parks and Recreation website.

Currently, Barba is offering Pickleball drop-in classes every Wednesday at San Gorgonio from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Cost is $15 and can be paid on-site. For more information contact Barba at 954.647.6305.

SC’s Sanden Completes Seven African Marathons in Eight Days

G

iraffes, elephants, hyenas and zebras served as the backdrop to San Clemente resident Beth Sanden’s latest physical endurance accomplishment.

Sanden, who suffered a cycling accident several years ago and was left partially paralyzed from the waist down, completed seven marathons in seven different African countries in eight days.

Last year, Sanden accomplished her longtime goal of completing a marathon on her custom hand-cycle on every continent on Earth. This year, she wanted to continue to set the bar high and focused on training for her African journey.

Sanden completed the Southern African Challenge, which features marathons in South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Zambia.

She began the trek on July 29 and finished on August 5, which happened to be her birthday.

Sanden said a group of 20 marathoners attempted the journey, but only 11 finished.

Sanden said road conditions, as well as

altitude, made the experience difficult at times.

There were also a lot of logistical hurdles to overcome. Each marathoner had to have the proper travel visa, and punctuality was crucial. Several countries had strict border closure times, which forced some marathoners to begin as early as 2:30 a.m.

In Lesotho, the group’s marathon was confined to the immediate area surrounding several international embassies and they were monitored by armed guards.

Sanden saw an abundance of wildlife, including giraffes in Swaziland. Elephant sightings in Botswana forced the race director to alter the route several times out of fear of the animals charging.

“You had to dig down deep and pray a lot to get this done,” Sanden said. “I believe (marathons) on Antarctica and the North Pole were extremely hard, and this African challenge was right up there with those two races.”

For her next feat, Sanden is contemplating a Caribbean marathon challenge or a seven-marathon journey through the Southeastern United States. SC

an Clemente swimmer Brad Prolo started his week at the Speedo Junior National Championships off with a bang.

Prolo, who is competing for San Clemente Aquatics at the prestigious event in Long Island, posted a time of 2:02.19 in the 200-meter butterfly to place 10th overall.

The 10th-place finish jumpstarted what will be a busy week of competition for Prolo. He will compete in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke and the 200-meter individual medley later this week.

Local surfers shine at U.S. Open of Surfing

W

ith a pulsing tropical swell, a hungry field of international talent and a lot of motivation for South Orange County surfers to make their presence felt, it was a wild ride at the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach this year.

In the men’s main event, Pat Gudauskas of San Clemente blasted through heat after heat. Making the most of the pristine, summertime conditions in Surf City, he found himself still standing on the final day of the contest with a very real chance of winning it. Unfortunately, in a hard-fought quarterfinal against Brazilian Tomas Hermes, Gudauskas found himself 0.07 of a point away from advancing. For a lot of people, such a skin-of-the-teeth loss would be a heartbreaker, but Gudauskas’s charity organization is called the Positive Vibe Warriors for a reason.

“I came close to the finish I was searching for, but have to stand proud with my result and performance through the event,” said Gudauskas afterward. “I feel ready for a return to the world tour, and when I’m surfing with the backing of everyone out there, it feels like I can do anything I put my mind to…equal fifth and a fire storm brewing for the back half of the season.”

For his effort, Gudauskas climbs 17 spots on the WSL’s Qualifying Series and now sits at 10th on the rankings. San Clemente’s Griffin Colapinto finished equal ninth in the Open and jumped from seventh to fifth in the rankings. As the QS season turns the corner and every contest starts to count a lot more, both surfers are well positioned to make a serious run at qualifying for the 2018 WSL Championship Tour.

While Gudauskas and Colapinto were hammering away in the main event, in the junior ranks a number of local surfers were also doing some serious work. Cole Houshmand and Crosby Colapinto, who’ve both enjoyed perhaps the best summer of their young, competitive careers, made the semifinals of the Men’s Pro Junior, while Kade Matson did them one better, making the final and finishing third. As far as rankings on the WSL’s North American junior circuit, Houshmand and Colapinto are tied for fourth, and Made’s just a stone’s throw away at 11th.

On the girls side, Dana Point’s Bella Kenworthy was knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Pro Junior, while San Clemente’s Samantha Sibley earned herself a spot in the semis but was unable to fight her way out of the stacked heat.

Sibley’s now ranked second on the North American junior circuit, with San Clemente’s Kirra Pinkerton sitting in third.

Later this month, Gudauskas and the QS warriors have opportunities to earn some more valuable qualification points at the Vans Pro in Virginia Beach and the Galicia Pro in Galicia, Spain. The next top-rated WSL QS contest is Cascais Pro in Portugal at the end of September. SC

He’s also an accomplished artist, surf-tripping and working alongside his friend and famed creator Julian Schnabel.

“It’s been a really great ride,” said Fletcher during his acceptance speech.

grom is a young person who is always stoked,” 12-year-old Taylor Stacy said.

With an answer like that, of course Taylor has to be the Grom of the Week. A student at Shorecliffs Middle School and a regular at Lowers, she’s as stoked as they come. She runs with a tight pack of talented, up-and-coming girls in San Clemente, and while she spends as much time in the water as she can, she rips on both snow and skateboards as well.

As far as her surf game goes, Taylor’s all about pushing herself. “I am working on getting more consistent with my blow

tails,” she said.

And when it comes to a dream surf trip, “Australia or Bali,” Taylor said. “I would want to go to either of these places because the waves are good and the water is warm.

I would go with my friends and family.”

Family’s big for Taylor. She lists her folks among her biggest inspirations. She’s also proud of where she comes from. When asked where she sees herself in a few years, she notes, “I want to be living in San Clemente surfing and skateboarding with my friends.”

With stoke like that, there’s no doubt Taylor’s going to go far, whatever dream she ends up chasing. Her favorite quote is telling: “Never give up because that’s what winners do.”
