Five things San Clemente should know this week TCA Will Fight Lawsuits Filed Against it by City of San Clemente, The Reserve THE LATEST: Following a closed session meeting on Aug. 10, the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) voted to defend its position regarding the two lawsuits filed against the agencies by the city of San Clemente and The Reserve Maintenance Corporation, a homeowners’ association in San Clemente.

San Clemente Mayor Kathy Ward, who is a board member on the Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agencies, recused herself from the closed session portion as she voted at her City Council’s closed session to authorize the city to file a lawsuit against the TCA. The lawsuit filed by the city of San Clemente seeks the court’s action to require the TCA to go through the process of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) before a settlement agreement is made. The settlement was completed between the TCA and various environmental groups in November 2016, which states so long as the TCA doesn’t build a toll road through an avoidance area, covering most of south of San Clemente and Trestles, the groups will be provided with a $28 million conservation fund.

In a statement from the TCA, read by the Joint Board Chairman Ed Sachs during the meeting, the agencies argued that they had the authority to settle agreements related to lawsuits between it and local environmental groups. It also disputed claims against them that they violated California’s open meetings act, the Brown Act, when it settled those agreements in a closed session, which are not open to the public.

The TCA disputed claims that they were violating the California Environmental Quality Act, as it has not taken any steps to approve projects under the act. It also disputed claims regarding lack of CEQA processes related to the Oso Bridge project and converting a road in Rancho Mission Viejo into a toll road.

In order to figure out the traffic needs of South Orange County, the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) approved $649,000 to fund a traffic engineering performance assessment report and mobility in the area as well as some additional spending, if necessary.

Ward said the study should reflect data that will be compiled after the I-5 corridor expansion and Avenida La Pata expansions are complete, as data collected during construction times would not accurately reflect “normal” traffic.

The final vote to approve the expense included those points. Jeff Corless, spokesperson for the TCA, said officials will not commence studies until the major traffic projects have been completed.

San Juan Capistrano’s liaison Brian Maryott concurred that the data should show the most accurate numbers, adding that he is “very anxious” about the possibility of a toll road being built through San Juan or any other neighboring city.

After a slew of complaints from members of the public who attended the third public forum hosted by the TCA on June 5, at Saddleback College, the agencies will look to formalize a disclaimer form for comments and questions made during public forums.

At the forum, TCA officials acknowledged security personnel “misinterpreted” what items were to be allowed and not allowed at the forum, such as signs showing favor or opposition to the toll road process.

Another problem people disputed was when the TCA collected comment cards from the public and intended to publish them online, people were unaware that their contact information was also published with the cards.

WHAT’S NEXT: TCA officials said they took steps to correct the errors at the forum, but people at the public comment portion of the Aug. 10, meeting were unsatisfied, claiming the organization did not do

all that it could to immediately correct the mistake. The next joint board meeting is scheduled to take place in October. —Eric Heinz

City to Host Paratransit Public Hearing Sept. 13 THE LATEST: The city of San Clemente announced on Aug. 15, that it will seek public comments during a hearing “to consider a complementary paratransit service plan associated with the city,” according to its press release.

The hearing will consider public transportation opportunities for its fixed route transit service and its connection to the San Clemente Trolley, which is funded through OCTA and “Project V.” “The complementary paratransit services are for individuals whose disabilities make them unable to use the fixed route,” the release stated. “To allow staff adequate time to confirm software compatibility, individuals wishing to utilize electronic visual aids to supplement their oral presentations at the meeting, must submit the electronic files to the City Clerk by no later than noon on the day of the meeting.”

People who want to comment with visual aids must submit “compatible electronic formats.”

WHAT’S NEXT: The hearing is expected to take place during the City Council meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at City Hall, located at 100 Avenida Presidio.

THE LATEST: After the Outlets at San Clemente were denied the usage of 12 temporary signs placed around the outside of its businesses by the city’s Planning Commission, the owners appealed to the City Council on Aug. 15, but were denied by a vote of 3-2.

Proponents of the signage looked to emphasize the city’s signage code that says temporary signs must be placed on the primary building structure and that they were in compliance with the code, but city officials said because the signs were left up beyond the limited 120 days for the year, they had to be removed.

Brad Malamud, a local attorney who is involved with the Outlets and its owners, Craig Realty Group, said because the definition of the law makes it clear that the temporary signs at the Outlets are emblazoned on the structures, the city should not penalize the businesses for something that other businesses in town already do.

From the beginning of the year to the middle of July, the Outlets businesses were fined at least $16,000 for infractions related to temporary signage, according to documents from the city.

A number of people who live in the Marblehead area argued during the appeal process that their property values have already been affected by the Outlets and that allowing for the signage facing their homes facing west would see further decline. No records were presented to support these claims during the meeting.

Councilman Tim Brown said during the appeal process that he understood the argument the appellants were trying to make, but that the issues related to signage shouldn’t be altered because of the circumstance that the Outlets already have an application for permanent signage.

The Outlets were originally denied permits for 18 temporary signs that they have applied for within the city’s limits. The city’s law allows for temporary signage for 30 days at a time but no more than 120 days within a calendar year. The Outlets signage issue—at least for these applications—has been debated for almost two years and was brought up numerous times when the city amended its sign ordinance in 2016.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Outlets at San Clemente currently have an application that is being considered by the city for 18 permanent signs, but the temporary signs are in place for the time being. The permanent signage is expected to have halo lighting, or back-lit, signage. Padgett told the board she’s made it a priority to ask people who wear military garb if they are eligible to join the VFW, but it hasn’t been easy. She said maintaining and gaining membership is how the post is able to stay “politically charged” to receive benefits for veterans and retirees.

During the last 12 years, Post 7142 has donated more than $53,000 to the VFW National Home for Children.

They also try to arrange trips for members to visit the spinal injury ward of the VA hospital in Long Beach.

City Adjusts Public Restroom Hours THE LATEST: Amid complaints from the public and illegal activity that’s been documented by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, the City Council voted to adjust its open hours for public restrooms.

The restrooms were closed from midnight to 4 a.m. every night, and the adjustment now closes them from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The city also approved to hire a parttime supervisor to monitor the restrooms at a rate of about $15,000 per year and a new locking system that is budgeted for $50,000.

WHAT’S NEXT: According to a staff report from the city, the illicit activities that have taken place during late-night hours have cost the city $70,000. The fiscal impact to taxpayers will likely be documented and presented to the new Public Safety Task Force as soon as the data is available. —EH

VFW Trying to Increase Membership as Funding Sources Dwindle THE LATEST: A group of U.S. military veterans gathered around brown picnic tables and a wall-size American flag in the background on Aug. 9, at the Elks Lodge in San Clemente.

All of them wearing their Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) caps, the consortium of VFW Post 7142 in San Clemente contemplated the best strategy going forward.

“We need everyone to sign up for at least one shift for the Buddy Poppies,” Wayne Greenleaf announced during the meeting. Greenleaf was in the Navy for 30 years. He now serves as the Sr. Vice Commander of the 7142 post.

We would like to raise $15,000 a year, and we were doing well the last five years, but it’s hard work out there eight hours (collecting money), but a lot of people don’t understand the costs.

According to tax forms as well as the VFW Board of Trustees minutes, Post 7142 has been operating at a five-figure deficit for the last 10 years, if not longer.

The post had to sell its headquarters years ago in order to make up the difference.

Investments were made starting in 2006 with the money it had and some of the $250,000 it received from the sale of the headquarters, but those investments haven’t generated much in returns, officials said.

Full Bird Col. Dolores Padgett, commander of Post 7142, said the post was unable to afford the maintenance of the facility and its property taxes.

“We go into deficit of about $35,000 a year, pulling off the investments,” Padgett said. “We would like to raise $15,000 a year, and we were doing well the last five years, but it’s hard work out there eight hours (collecting money), but a lot of people don’t understand the costs.”

Padgett, a Vietnam veteran, said she first tried to join a VFW branch in Northern California, but at the time she wasn’t welcome because she was a woman.

“We put out over $30,000 a year to veterans and community programs,” Padgett said.

Some of those donations go to the Boys & Girls Club of the South Coast Area, Wounded Warriors Foundation, the Paraplegic Wheelchair Game and the traveling Vietnam Wall in Dana Point.

But the revenue stream has been a meager $11,000 on average during the last few years. The Buddy Poppies, which are distributed around Memorial Day Weekend, only bring in about $5,000.

Many of the poppies, which are worn in support of military veterans who were killed in combat, are made by disabled veterans.

If things don’t change, Padgett said Post 7142 may be able to operate and

donate the way it does in about four or five years. Some of the lack of membership is attributed to older veterans dying from age or other ailments, but Padgett said it’s important the post reach out to newer, younger veterans.

Post 7142 has about 100 members who are registered with the post, but not all are or can be as active. Five of the veterans are in their 90s or older. Volunteerism is welcome, but for the most part the VFW focuses on its own.

“Luckily, our retention has been very good,” Padgett said. “Unfortunately, we’ve had a lot of deaths in this post over the last two years, and we need to replace our World War II guys.”

WHAT’S NEXT: Post 7142 is trying to set up a “Stand Down” for homeless veterans in the area, an effort in which they peruse local communities in search of veterans who ended up on the streets.

“We’re going to try to have one where they are; some are on the beach or here or there,” Padgett said. “We’re going to go down and talk to them, but we don’t want to invade (their privacy). The word will get out.”

Padgett said, based on her experiences working in a hospital as a nurse, that San Clemente has at least 70 homeless veterans who live in the area full-time.

“It’s been really difficult not having the hospital here,” she said.

The VFW members said they will host a birthday party for local 100-year-old veteran Robert Hayden on Thursday, Sept.

7. The next meeting of the VFW Board of Trustees is at 7 p.m. (1900 hours) on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the Elks Lodge, located at 1505 N. El Camino Real.

Casa Romantica Turns 90 Historic event venue will host celebration on Sept. 3

H

istory seeps from every nook and cranny of the former home of San Clemente’s founder.

Casa Romantica has changed hands many times, but its original structure has remained mostly the same, with the exception of much-needed renovation in its nearcentury existence.

On Sunday, Sept. 3, in conjunction with the D. Yoder Family Sundays, the property will celebrate turning 90 years old. The landmark anniversary will be honored by the staff at Casa Romantica who will host a gathering with music, cake and a toast to the center. People are encouraged to dress in 1920s attire, a throwback to the era when Ole Hanson, the founder of San Clemente, owned the home.

“The house was lost by the Hanson family and reverted to the Bank of America, and then one of the ladies who lived in town in town lived there,” said Ruth DeNault, the chair of the Casa Romantica board. “Many families has owned it over the years, and then it became a retirement home.”

Eventually, the owners were unable to keep the property maintained, as decades of wear and tear had taken toll. It was eventually sold to the city of San Clemente

in the 1990s, leased as a private event center.

“Fortunately, an anonymous donor gave $1.25 million to the city, if it could become a cultural center,” DeNault said.

“We formed a board and started to raise money. It took quite a while because the place was quite run-down.”

The gardens, some of the patios and some other buildings were either restored or demolished completely, replaced by the amphitheater and other amenities.

“It’s so wonderful to welcome the members and non-members of the community here,” DeNault said.

A refurbished amphitheater is currently being examined by the city’s Planning Services Department, with full seating and a safer design, according to plans submitted

by Casa Romantica.

Berenika Schmitz, the executive director of the Casa, said she and her staff are trying to schedule events and programs at least two years in advance. The Casa has a schedule available on its website.

“When I came on in 2013, we started ‘Casa Captivating’ and started classifying the events, and in the past four years they’ve flourished, and we’ve been able to sell-out many of our events,” Schmitz

said. “The idea is to get farther and farther ahead to provide transformative programming, and now we have the time to do that.”

The Casa has also increased its membership tenfold in the last four years from 90 to 900. Attendance at events has soared and events have increased, according to a report published in May. A recent event, the Rebecca Louise Law flower installment, was described

by Schmitz as being a “really watershed

image.” The installation allowed people to walk through suspended blooms that hung on wires.

“It was phenomenal in getting new people here,” DeNault said.

Schimtz said the team wants to continue exploring fundraising opportunities and to show that it’s a place worth sustaining.

Maintenance is always going to be one of the most expensive costs to the facility.

“We want to get people excited about preserving the Casa,” Schmitz said. SC

Winning Mega Millions Ticket Sold in San Clemente One lucky California Lottery player decided to stop by a 76 gas station in San Clemente, located at 2360 S. El Camino Real, “and it will go down as arguably one of the best decisions of their life,” a lottery press release stated.

That’s because while they were there, they picked up a Mega Millions lottery ticket that matched five of the six winning numbers from the Aug. 7 draw. That lucky ticket is now worth $1,060,689.

The winner has not come forward yet to claim their prize, but the winning numbers were 11-17-50-52-74. Had the ticket matched that number, it would have hit the estimated $350 million jackpot.

The 76 station will receive a $5,303 retailer bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Winners are strongly encouraged to sign the back of their ticket in ink, keep it in a safe place where they’ll remember and familiarize themselves with the lottery’s “Winner’s Handbook,” which can be found on the California Lottery’s website.

CUSD Appoints Anne Delfosse as Executive Director of Special Education Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) Board of Trustees appointed Anne Delfosse as Executive Director of special education, effective Aug. 9.

“I am looking forward to being back home at Capistrano Unified,” Delfosse stated in a press release. “I look forward to being part of the leadership team bringing innovation forward for our students and for the families we serve.”

Delfosse served as Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) Executive Director for the West Orange County Consortium for Special Education since 2009. Prior to that, she served as director and executive director of special education for CUSD, according to a press release.

The subscriptions will be used as part of the nonprofit’s anxiety reduction therapy provided to clients prior to their restraining order hearings.

City Completes Three Street Improvement Projects in Forster Ranch The city of San Clemente announced the completion of the Camino Del Rio Rehabilitation Project, Camino Del Rio intersection improvements Project and the Camino De Los Mares rehabilitation and slurry seal project, according to a press release distributed last week.

“City staff is working with the contractor to complete remaining punch-list items,” the release stated. “This marks the opening of the roundabouts on Camino Del Rio at Camino De Los Mares and Calle Sarmentoso, which are the first modern roundabouts in San Clemente. A modern roundabout is a circular intersection with the following characteristics: Entering vehicles yield to vehicles in the intersection; vehicles travel at slower speeds which increases safe travel through the intersection; and traffic circulates counterclockwise through the intersection which reduces conflicts and the number of decision points.”

City officials said the benefits of roundabouts include improving safety, slower speeds, noise reduction and improved air quality, as well as lower operating and maintenance costs than traffic signals. This also complements community values identified at the public workshops.

“The Federal Highway Administration has reported that roundabouts improve

safety with a 76 percent reduction in injury crashes and 35 percent reduction in all crashes when compared to other types of intersections,” the release stated.

Outlets at San Clemente to Host Mobile Drive In partnership with San Diego Blood Bank, the Outlets at San Clemente, located at 101 W. Avenida Vista Hermosa, will host a mobile blood drive from 1-6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 24.

“One pint of blood, which is the amount volunteers give when they donate blood, can save up to three lives,” according to a press release from the blood bank. “Approximately, 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, but less than 10 percent do annually. Since blood is always needed, volunteers are asked to give blood for patients, such as those going through cancer or trauma.”

Donors must meet the following eligibility requirements: Must be 17 years old and older (Age 16 requires a parental consent), weigh at least 114 pounds and be in “good health,” the release stated.

Donors are advised to drink plenty of fluids prior to donation. Maintain usual eating habits on the day of donation and avoid fatty foods if possible. All donors must show picture identification upon signing up to donate.

Past is Prologue in San Clemente

I

t suddenly occurred to me the other day that over 35,000 people have moved here since the San Clemente Historical Society had a public museum space. The character and quality of this city has a lot to do with its history—which, although commissioned only ninety-some years ago— is one of the county’s oldest.

There are a lot of good new things in San Clemente today. But what is old here is very, very good.

Ole Hanson, our town’s founding father, was a visionary who felt that in order to profit from a community it was necessary to first invest in its citizens. His belief included providing the town with a hospital, waterworks, a community center, a world class public pool facility, a pier and numerous public parks. He envisioned a “Spanish Village By the Sea,” palm lined winding streets dotted with red tile roofs and whitewashed walls with cascading plants—a place that would be the most pleasant in America.

He developed this inspiration from his knowledge of history and a keen eye for the beauty in other countries like Spain.

I wonder as we look at the eclectic architectural styles and random development in town if many new citizens know that San Clemente was Orange County’s first masterplanned community and one of the first in the entire United States. Or that the original plan called for the roadway system to follow the contour of the natural topography,

I live within sight and sound of the end of the Camino del Rio extension where it meets Camino de Los Mares in Forster Ranch.

Since it has been completed, the nice new asphalt has become a magnet for drivers of an assortment of obnoxiously loud cars, trucks and motorcycles. I have been rudely awakened numerous times by various so-called “performance” exhaust systems blasting to and from the intersection of Vera Cruz and Los Mares, and up the hill on Del Rio, very often in the middle of the night, mostly—but hardly limited to—weekends and afternoon drive time. It’s bad enough when one inconsiderate oaf decides to put the pedal to the floor, but there has also been a fair amount of street racing going on, most recently close to midnight on Monday night, Aug. 7, when at least two cars made a couple of passes. It is a common to hear residents raving about the quality of life in San Clemente while almost in the same breath complaining about the restrictions and regulations of our city government. I wonder if they know that most of what they love about their community came from the intense restrictions and regulations set down by the town’s founder.

We enjoy exceptional weather, low crime, good schools, superb surf, wonderful citizens and a bright future.

San Clemente is the finest small town anyone could live in. But it would do us even throughout the day the 35 mph speed limit (45 miles per hour on Los Mares) is largely ignored, in spite of the electronic signs deployed on the hill.

Another problem is people drinking, using drugs and having late-night sex in cars parked at the end of Los Mares where the hiking trail starts. On several of my morning walks, I have seen not only mini liquor bottles tossed in the bushes, but discarded condoms in the gutter.

What is needed here is a consistent and determined presence by our local law enforcement, including: routine patrols throughout the night, checking parked cars and policing vehicles stationed during the day to deter speeding and enforce the noise laws.

well to remember that hiking trails, public schools, playgrounds, clean beaches, community pride and an almost Scandinavian commitment to our quality of life were the hallmarks of this town’s heritage from its first groundbreaking. And that aspiration should continue.

TCA was born of the arrogance of OC Supervisors who were themselves frustrated by Caltrans’ refusal in the 1980s to spend limited public funds on freeways to facilitate land sales of OC’s fat cat developers. All were buddies of those same Supervisors.

Of all the bad government decisions from the 80s, TCA’s existence continues to haunt us. It is an automaton created by the state of California at the behest of local politicos.

And like the broom in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, it will continue to flood the county with bad ideas. Acting alone San Clemente is merely Mickey Mouse; we must find our Sacramento wizards and abolish TCA once and for all.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 19: ADAM LASHER AT BARNOA WINE COMPANY 7:30 p.m. As part of its series of musical performances, Barnoa Wine Company will feature Adam Lasher, a former ‘American Idol’ contestant who is also the nephew of international superstar Carlos Santana.

From the big stage spotlight of American Idol to the cozy settings of small venues around Southern California, Adam Lasher has been performing all over the Golden Coast.

Several of those small venues include locations in San Clemente, which have become semi-frequent performance stops for Lasher over the last few years, including this Saturday’s show at Barnoa Wine Company in Talega.

“The more people attending, the more fun it is to play, but I like doing something different every night,” Lasher said.

“Barnoa is somewhere you can play in different groups, and I do play solo a lot.”

Being kin to international phenomenon Carlos Santana, Lasher said his uncle’s all-star guitar playing and musicianship had a profound impact on his musical upbringing.

“My grandfather was also in a mariachi band, and I think even if (Santana) wasn’t as famous as he is, he still would have had that influence,” Lasher said. “It’s all about

the hard work that goes into the music that has inspired me.”

The only set list Lasher said he refers to is in his head, so Barnoa audience members won’t know just what to expect until the night of the performance.

Attendees might even get a taste of Lasher’s new music that he’s currently working on. Although his new album doesn’t have a title yet, he is already five songs deep into the writing process. “(The album) is going to be somewhere between John Mayer and Kings of Leon,” Lasher said. “It’s going to be a little more rock and a little darker, but still energetic.”

He’s also writing songs for a cartoon movie that will debut in China. Although he performs with the Adam Lasher band, his set at Barnoa will be solo. Lasher said he can frequently be seen performing in Laguna Beach too.

At the Movies: ‘Wind River’ Is a Fine Addition for Director Sheridan

ith another untimely release date, and only a week after Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit, Taylor Sheridan’s Wind River comes to theaters with a political theme a little too close to home. Sheridan is the TV actorturned-screenwriter behind the critical hits Sicario (2015) and Hell or High Water (2016), and makes his directorial debut here. Recruiting Marvel actors Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen and Jon Bernthal as his stars, the drama/thriller is still a

quality input for Sheridan’s resume.

In the middle of snowy Wyoming, local game tracker Cory Lambert (Renner)

discovers the dead body of his friends’ teenage daughter (Kelsey Asbille) right on the edge of the Wind River Indian Reservation.

Las Vegas FBI agent Jane Banner (Olsen) is assigned to the case and convinces Cory to help her learn about the town and the possible murder suspects. Along the way, Jane also finds that Cory himself has some secrets.

Graham Greene co-stars as the town sheriff. Wind River is loosely based on actual events that are still occurring in Native American communities where dozens of

young girls are missing or found dead, and many of the cases aren’t given full investigations. Sheridan’s film might be a bit uncomfortable for some with recent racial tensions brimming throughout the nation, but it is still a fine feature—with a pretty eerie score by Nick Cave—and proves the filmmaker is here to stay and keep his mark in cinema. If there’s one odd complaint, it’s that Olsen didn’t need to be wearing that much makeup while investigating in the middle of the wilderness. SC

Reigning state, CIF champion San Clemente reloads for 2017 season

Jaime Ortiz was standing on the sidelines of a recent USC football practice when the shirt he was wearing sparked the curiosity of a woman standing nearby. The words “Triton Football” emblazoned in red and black caught her eye, and she had to ask the coach a question.

“Wasn’t Jack Sears your quarterback last year?” the woman, whose son plays for the Trojans, asked last year’s CIF-SS Division 2 coach of the year.

Name recognition, it seems, has caught up to the San Clemente High School football program.

It’s no surprise Ortiz continues to field questions like that and receive congratulations from residents and strangers alike.

Players like Sears and Sam Darnold, both now playing football at USC, brought the Tritons into the spotlight in recent years, culminating with the program winning CIF-SS and state titles in 2016. The Tritons reached the top of the California high school football universe, and returned home as the toast of Orange County and the

pride of the beach community they play for.

Ortiz and his players allowed themselves to bask in the victory and the special season, but only for so long. As is the case in any sport, they knew the next season was just on the horizon.

The 2017 Tritons will begin the new year under a microscope, but are loaded with returning talent. They’ll run through a tough schedule and have been moved up to CIF-SS Division 1.

Expectations, understandably, are high.

Dealing with the hype Whenever a team wins a CIF-SS title, let alone a state championship, they enter the next season as a sort-of “marked man”. Nearly every (Continued)

TRITON FOOTBALL PREVIEW (Continued) team they face next season will have that date circled in red, knowing they’ll be playing the reigning champions.

The Triton players know this all too well.

“I love it,” senior tight end Chris Kane said of the Tritons’ position. “To have people mark our game on their calendars … that’s awesome for us. It adds to our competitiveness.”

Ortiz said the coaching staff has kept the focus on the field, working under the guiding mantra of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” Just because they won several games last season hasn’t drastically affected the way the Tritons are preparing for the new season.

“Sometimes if you try and change too much, you forget everything that you changed,” Ortiz said. “There are little things we’ve done, and we have a couple guys going both ways more than we did last year, but I don’t think a whole lot has changed.

The kids still want to work hard and represent their community and their school.”

Experience on offense The Tritons return a nice mix of impact starters on offense from last year’s squad, which averaged 36.4 points per game.

They return All-CIF-SS and All-South Coast League running back Austin Whitsett, who averaged nearly 70 yards per game and scored three touchdowns.

The Tritons are deep at receiver, and will deliver a one-two punch with all-league wide out Keith Jones and four-year starter Chase Berman.

Keeping up the tradition of top-level tight ends in the program is Chris Kane, a hot recruit who reeled in five touchdown passes in 11 games during an all-league junior campaign. Kane is a versatile weapon who can block as well as be deployed at wide receiver.

The Tritons are inexperienced on the offensive line, but have returning senior left tackle Thomas Wade, who recently picked up a handful of collegiate offers.

The big question mark on offense is at quarterback.

After several years of stability at the position, a quarterback competition is underway to see who will win the starting job. Juniors Jay Baggs, Rob Farney and Brendan Costello, a transfer from Santa Margarita, are getting reps in practice. Ortiz believes the Tritons next signal caller will emerge after a few more weeks of practice in pads at game speed.

Swarm defense Before the start of last season, Ortiz returned to the role of defensive coordinator for the first time in four seasons. He wanted the Tritons to fly to the ball and play what he calls “swarm defense”.

Now with a full season of Ortiz’s defensive philosophy in place, the Tritons are poised to be strong on defense yet again.

The Tritons will have one of the more dynamic groups of defensive backs in Orange County. Seniors Branden Wilson (cornerback), Bryce Wilson (safety) and Jack Shippy (safety) tormented opposing offenses last season, especially when Shippy

jumped into the mix after sitting out the first five games due to transfer requirements.

Once Shippy joined the team, the Tritons had a trio of game-changing players that combined to record nine interceptions.

The Tritons will be one of 20 teams vying for 18 available playoff spots next winter.

In preparation for South Coast League play and for a run at the playoffs, the Tritons will play a difficult schedule.

Ortiz said it was hard to schedule games against Orange County opponents, so the Tritons will play games against quality noncounty programs like Oceanside (Aug. 25), Murrieta Valley (Sept. 15) and Palos Verdes (Sept. 22).

The Tritons will play Murrieta Valley, Palos Verdes and Edison in order, making for a tough three-week stretch. Last year, San Clemente defeated Murrieta Valley and Edison to claim the CIF-SS Division 2 and CIF SoCal Division 1A Regional titles, respectively.

The versatile 6-foot-5-inch, 215-pound Kane can be deployed as a blocking tight end, at wide receiver and in the slot. Kane, who holds six collegiate offers, says he spent the offseason working on being a more physical presence.

SS (No. 27) SR. Shippy is an absolute game-changer on defense, and returns to lead an experienced and talented secondary.

Shippy racked up 53 tackles and a team-high six interceptions in just 10 games as a junior. Shippy, a former linebacker, brings a ball-hawk mentality to his position at strong safety and will no doubt provide some highlightreel plays.

WR (No. 17) SR. Standing at 6-feet-2-inches tall and weighing 195 pounds, Jones will provide the Tritons with a big, speedy target at wide out. Jones was one of the Tritons’ go-to receivers in 2016, where he reeled in 55 catches for 660 yards and seven touchdowns. Jones is primed for a big senior season, and is garnering collegiate interest.

FS (No. 26) SR. Wilson, along with Shippy and his brother, Branden, returns to anchor an experienced and dynamic secondary.

Wilson, an All-CIF-SS selection, made 105 tackles and recorded one interception as a junior, and will be called upon to produce at free safety again in 2017. Wilson will also assist on special teams as a kick and punt returner.

WR (No. 4) SR. Berman is a four-year starter, the most experienced player on the team and one of the Tritons’ unquestioned leaders. Berman caught 21 passes in 11 games and scored five touchdowns at wide out last year, but will see an expanded role throughout his senior campaign.

LB (No. 44) SR. Croft, the team’s leading tackler from last season, returns to anchor the defense at the middle linebacker position. Croft was an integral part of the Tritons’ defense last year, where he recorded 130 tackles and played in all 16 games. Croft felt the team made big strides last year, but “this year we’re trying to perfect the defense and play great football,” he said.

Oceanside returns seven starters from a defense that allowed an average of 23 points per game last year. Leading the way will be safety Armond Fesili, the team’s leading tackler in 2016, and linebacker Mikah Linnan. Oceanside lost a lot of playmakers to graduation, but a veteran offensive line should help with a smooth transition. Three linemen return, anchored by highly recruited Donovan Laie.

Coach: Brett Brown 2016 Record: 4-7 (2-3 Sunset League) 2016 vs SC: Loss, 38-13 Season Outlook: The Oilers treaded water under the guidance of first-year head coach Brett Brown last season. Huntington Beach will look to navigate its way through a tough Sunset League and nonleague schedule in 2017.

The Oilers will play three South Coast League squads, including Tesoro and San Juan Hills, before taking on reigning CIF-SS Division 3 champion Edison and Division 3 semifinalist Los Alamitos in league play. Returning to the fold is wide out Jeremiah Flanagan and senior linebacker John Gosney, who averaged just over seven tackles per game last season. Two-way player Caleb Webb returns.

Location: Fullerton HS Time: 7 p.m.

Coach: Gus Martinez and Ed DeAvila 2016 Record: 4-6 (1-4 Freeway League) 2016 vs. SC: DNP Season Outlook: The Indians return depth and experience at key positions. Junior quarterback Gavin Klepper played in every game under center as a sophomore, and will look to improve his 10:10 touchdown-to-interception ratio from one year ago. Klepper will have returning 6-foot-2-inch receiver Jarod Martinez and Adam Gonzalez to throw to. Linebacker Anthony Ayon (six sacks and 70 tackles in 2016) returns on defense. Fullerton has held its own in the competitive Freeway League last season. Four of the five league games the Indians played in were decided by 14 points or less, but all four games resulted in a loss.

Coach: George Wilson 2016 Record: 11-3 (5-0 Southwestern League) 2016 vs. SC: Loss, 45-35 Season Outlook: With the return of junior quarterback Hank Bachmeier, the Nighthawks appear poised for another successful season. Bachmeier threw for 3,862 yards and 46 touchdowns in his spectacular sophomore campaign.

His favorite target, Marquis Spiker, returns. The two linked up for 26 touchdowns last year. The Nighthawks will need to find a running back to replace 2,472-yard rusher Olita Palmer, who graduated. The Nighthawks, who advanced to the CIF-SS Division 2 Championship game in 2016, were content with outscoring their opponents last year, averaging 50 points per game while conceding an average of 33 points per game on defense.

Location: El Camino College Time: 7 p.m.

Coach: Guy Gardner 2016 Record: 7-5 (4-1 Bay League) 2016 vs. SC: Loss, 28-7 Season Outlook: Palos Verdes relied on the run to advance to the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS Division 3 Championships last year. With senior quarterback Jake Nolls and a stable of backs returning, that trend should continue in 2017. The Sea Kings had five players record at least 33 carries last season, including three players who recorded at least 91 carries. Palos Verdes averaged just over 187 yards rushing compared to 91.6 yards passing. Palos Verdes had a strong defense last season as well, one that allowed just 17 points per game. Safety Cole Wilken and linebacker Will Boss return.

Longtime coach Dave White stepped down after 31 years at the helm. Replacing him will be Jeff Grady, an Edison alum.

Grady inherits a talented squad that captured the CIF-SS Division 3 Championship and appeared in the CIF SoCal Division 1-A Regional Bowl game last year. Edison returns a 3,600-yard passer in O’Connor and a 1,000-yard rusher in Jack Carmichael. Returning linebackers Mateo Gallego and Luke Hoggard will help ensure this won’t be a rebuilding year.

Coach: Matt Poston 2016 Record: 5-6 (1-3 South Coast League) 2016 vs. SC: Loss, 41-3 Season Outlook: Tesoro will head into the new season with an impressive 16 returning starters from last year’s campaign. Leading the charge on offense will be senior quarterback Chase Petersen and versatile receiving weapon Seth Gilmore. Gilmore will be deployed at multiple spots on the field. Senior defensive end James Williams, who landed an offer from Cal State San Luis Obispo this offseason, returns to anchor the defense.

Coach Matt Poston lined up a difficult schedule for his team. Of the 10 teams Tesoro will face this year, eight of them reached the playoffs one year ago.

Coach: Aaron Flowers 2016 Record: 7-4 (2-2 South Coast League) 2016 vs. SC: Loss, 35-20 Season Outlook: The Stallions proved to be a resilient squad last year. They played in five, one-score games and came out on top in four of them. But many of those players from last year are gone, which has made for competition in fall camp.

The Stallions employed a twoquarterback platoon last year, and will continue the trend this year.

Seniors Doug Jackson and Matt Rodriguez will be the ones under center. Offensive and defensive lineman Sean Rhyan is one of the county’s hottest recruits. He picked up offers from several Pac12 schools, including USC, Stanford and UCLA this offseason.

Coach: John Abdelnour 2016 Record: 2-8 (0-4 South Coast League) 2016 vs. SC: Loss, 49-14 Season Outlook: Trabuco Hills mustered up just two wins in coach John Abdelnour’s inaugural season at the helm in 2016. With the graduation of a large senior class, the Mustangs, the 2014 CIFSS Southwest Division champions, will look to regain their footing.

Several impact players on offense graduated, but the Mustangs’ returning depth on defense should be a strength. Trabuco Hills returns its leading tackler from last year in senior linebacker Nick Friedman. Trabuco Hills’ defensive line returns several starters from last year, including Garrett Pinvidic, Wyatt Shubin and Ryan Ramer.

Coach: Bob Johnson 2016 Record: 11-1 (4-0 South Coast League) 2016 vs. SC: Win, 41-3 Season Outlook: The Diablos run like a well-oiled Swiss watch, and every season they are able to reload for another deep playoff push.

Mission Viejo, the reigning South Coast League champion, seems to have found its quarterback in St. John Bosco transfer Joey Yellen.

Yellen will be surrounded by standout wide receivers Austin Osborne, a University of Washington commit, and Olaijah Griffin. Griffin also plays cornerback and is committed to play at UCLA. Linebacker and Arizona State commit Christian LaValle returns after leading the Diablos in tackles last season.

Turning Back Time: A Summer Vacation Spent with ‘Friends’

L

ast month, my younger son underwent shoulder surgery, which subsequently left him in a shoulder sling for the remainder of the summer. I’m obviously not happy that my son’s shoulder injury required surgery, but I am grateful for one unexpected outcome.

His operation and subsequent recovery found us reverting to our long-retired roles of doting mom and dependent kid. With his dominant arm in an air cast, I cared for my son like I did throughout his toddler years: helping him with buttoning his shirt, cutting his food and combing his hair.

I know the natural progression of parenting leads to my boys needing me less and becoming independent adults—which they are—but for a few weeks I savored turning back the hands of time.

This summer, instead of passing by my younger son’s bedroom and hearing him ask, “Mom, can you close my door?” my convalescing son asked, “Mom, can you come in here?” And I welcomed the rare chance to spend one-on-one time with him.

My son’s recovery included weeks of rest at home with restrictions limiting his activity to not much more than reading books or watching television. Searching for a new series on Netflix, my son discovered Friends and started binge-watching; and at first I didn’t understand his newfound fascination with the decades-old comedy.

What did this kid, who is typically consumed with science fiction films, find captivating about Ross and Rachel’s conversations at Central Perk? Sitting next to my son and watching an episode of the series his interest became clear: my independent 20-year-old identifies with the show’s themes and the ensemble cast of six self-sufficient individuals in their mid-20s navigating life amid the obstacles of adulthood.

The sitcom aired on television from 1994 to 2004. My younger son was born a couple years after the series started and that, coupled with our generation gap, explains us watching the same show yet laughing at different dialogue.

I giggled at a mistake Rachel made while recording a message on an answering machine. My son didn’t laugh at the mishap so I explained answering machines and the difference between incoming and outgoing messages, which left me feeling laughable.

He found the fashion trends funny and said, “Why are all the clothes so baggy?

That’s not really how you wore them?”

Defending and describing the fashion statements of the early 90s is much more challenging than I’d imagined.

A particular reference to the 1960s television show The Flying Nun had me summarizing the premise of the comedy. My son said, “How was that a thing? It seems kind of ridiculous.” I hope he remembers that when he tries explaining The Walking Dead and its post-apocalyptic zombies to his kids.

My son is nearing the end of binge watching Friends, his physical therapy is progressing and he’s found a facility close to his college to continue his rehabilitation.

I empathize with the parents of soonto-be freshmen who are feeling an overwhelming weepiness and facing the fear of becoming as obsolete as an antiquated answering machine.

I’m among those struggling with letting go and of being let go. But unlike the parents of incoming freshmen who are wondering if their kids will like their campus, make friends or feel homesick, I’m wondering if this summer is the last that my younger son and I spend more than a few days together.

When the month ends we’ll return to the natural progression of parenting as my son goes back to school. My son will resume his life as independent 20-year-old student, finding his way through adulthood and needing me less—just as it should be.

Parenting may ebb and flow, but it never ends, and no matter how old my boys are it’s nice to know they sometimes still need their mom.

A

fter flourishing into a local and national network of high school clubs, Team Zissou is looking foward to the next school year and enhancing its efforts of environmental protection and awareness.

Club president and founder Jackson Hinkle said some of the new issues the club will try to tackle include environmental impact related to the toll road proposals through San Clemente and the storage of spent nuclear fuel at nearby San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).

The club has about a dozen core members with 100 pledged members. Hinkle said he hopes to have at least 300 members by the end of this year—which is his last at SCHS. The club has also established satellite clubs via social media in schools in Texas, New York, Seattle, Orange County School of the Arts, Ventura and Hawaii. He hopes to reach out to more schools in the Midwest.

The club is also continuing its Plastic Free SC campaign to educate people about the effects plastic water bottles have on the environment.

The Environmental Protection Agency suggests people carry reusable water bottles on them when going to remote locations or events, especially where recycling may not be available. The club also wants to work with the Ocean Institute in Dana Point for field trips and continuing education.

kids out there to learn about how climate change is affecting our coastal regions,” Hinkle said. “We’re going to keep fighting the toll road in a strategic way as to not reopen the San Mateo Watershed. I’m trying to get kids active in really leading some direct action campaigns.”

Around campus, the club helped establish water bottle fill-up stations.

“One of our goals is to get Flow Water, which is a sustainable water company, into restaurants and businesses so those organizations stop carrying plastic bottles,” Hinkle said.

One such business that’s already implemented the change is The Cellar in San Clemente.

Hinkle and his cohorts have also attended some City Council meetings to speak about their goals of making a more sustainable community.

In the future, Hinkle said he would like to see the club establish a sustainable surf contest that emphasizes using less harmful materials for surfboards and other sustainable methods.

Outdoor Offerings: Riding with the Renegades

The San Clemente Renegades cycling club offers a free, weekly out-and-back ride to Oceanside every Sunday.

There is never a shortage of things to do and areas to explore in Southern Orange County, especially during the summer time.

This week, we are highlighting a free outdoor offering by the San Clemente Renegades cycling club.

E

very Sunday, the San Clemente Renegades cycling club gather at San Clemente Cyclery to set off on an open out-and-back ride to Oceanside through Camp Pendleton, which is open to all interested riders. Riders do not have to be Renegade members to join in on the fun.

Departing San Clemente Cyclery at approximately 8:45 a.m., the ride starts off with a few warm-up miles through Trestles and the San Onofre Bluffs. The group then enters Pendleton via Trail 6, and continues the journey at a moderate pace.

Longtime Renegade rider Michael Sherritt said the ride is perfect for people who have never ridden in a group before. Riders will learn practical fundamentals such as drafting and rotation. Questions from newcomers are encouraged.

“It’s not uncommon at all for one of the senior riders to stick near the back and sort of mentor new riders,” Sherritt said.

During an out-and-back ride, there is always the option of turning around for those short on time or energy.

Gary Nicotra is one of the founders of

the Renegades, and emphasized the camaraderie found in the weekly ride.

“It’s really all about socializing and having fun. This is a recreational ride and we are open to anyone who WHAT: San Clemente Renwants to join us,” egades Open Ride Nicotra said.

After returning to San Clemente Cyclery, the out-and-back riders will usually hang at the shop for a bit and debrief before heading home or heading to Big Helyn’s Saloon for a drink.

The event honors the life and legacy of standout SCHS student-athlete and UCLA football player Nick Pasquale, who died in an accident in 2013. The event raises funds for the Nick Pasquale Foundation, which provides scholarships for San Clemente

OBITUARY

John Hakon Anderson John Hakon Anderson was born November 20, 1940 in Safford Arizona, the fourth child of Guy and Elizabeth Layton Anderson. To celebrate his birth, his father bought out both of the local flower shops.

In 1959 he served as freshman class president at BYU. As a young man, he served two missions for the LDS church. The first in Germany from 1960-1963 then after he graduated from the University of Arizona, he served for six months in Guatemala.

After his missionary service, he graduated from the University of Arizona Law School. He married his wife of 51 years, Glenna Van Atta, in 1966. After working as a Deputy District Attorney in Los Angeles County and then as an in-house corporate lawyer, he hung out his own shingle in San Clemente and practiced law

there for 39 years.

He is survived by his wife, Glenna, his four children, Peter, Todd, Stacey and Margaret, and his 19 grandchildren. As a lawyer, he derived great satisfaction from championing the rights of the underdog, whether the client could pay or not. Paradoxical to his profession, he found success in honesty and candor.

He was a faithful member of his church his entire life. He served as Bishop of the San Clemente Ward (back when there was just one ward) from 1983-1987. During that time, in addition to ministering, he founded a surf club for the youth and held weekly potluck beach parties all summer long.

He passed away peacefully in his home after a year long battle with pancreatic cancer.

John’s son, attorney Todd C. Anderson, will continue to manage the law practice going forward.

The Little Rascal That Could

Kolohe Andino earns career-best third place finish at the Billabong Pro Tahiti

Dino Andino’s exuberance in watching his son, Kolohe, pull off a last-second heat win at the Billabong Pro Tahiti reverberated around the crowded Teahupoo channel. Fists raised to the blue South Pacific sky, he’d just watched his son graduate from benign T Street to contending at one of the world’s premier reef breaks.

Last Friday, Aug. 11, the 14-day waiting period for the Billabong Pro Tahiti, a WSL Championship Tour contest, kicked off.

Rather than traveling with an entourage of coaches, trainers and board caddies, Kolohe (whose name translates to “Little Rascal”) kept it simple. It was just him and his old man.

Facing an adverse surf outlook filled with lots of wind and rain, contest organizers made the decision to run on the first day of the waiting period and jam through the entire contest in three days. In the history of the world tour, that’s never been done, and for those competing in the iconic contest, it required an extra dose of focus. Luckily, as he’s aged, matured and his goatee has grown longer, Kolohe seems to have focus in abundance.

After putting his head down and battling through the first two days of the contest,

the proverbial “morning of the final” broke under a nasty, gray sky.

“It’s pretty ugly out there,” remarked WSL Commissioner Kieren Perrow after his dawn patrol surf session on the shallow reef. “But we’re expecting things to clear up and for a new swell to start to pulse in.”

Undaunted by the weather, Kolohe battled forward. In the quarterfinals, he stayed busy against hard-charging Brazilian Wiggolly Dantes. While Kolohe hunted down smaller, inside waves and slowly built on his score line, Dantes held on to priority for most of the heat (meaning that he had the pick of any wave he wanted when it hit the lineup). With three minutes left on the clock, Wiggolly made a critical mistake. Taking off on a sub-par wave, he handed priority over to Kolohe, who spent the rest of the heat playing defense and keeping his rival off any potentially highscoring rides.

“That was a hard heat. Luckily, Wiggolly made that mistake at the end and I got an 8…I’ve still got more to give,” added Kolohe.

This is where the whole “like father, like son” cliché comes into play. In his heyday, Dino was one of the fiercest competitors on the burgeoning pro scene and a former national champion. As they say, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

In the semifinals, Kolohe was matched up against Brazilian world champion Gabriel Medina. Kolohe is way too professional to say so, but they don’t really enjoy each other’s company.

“I’m sneaky confident,” he joked afterward. “I’ve done well in all the conditions, both when it’s small and when it’s big.”

The first 10 minutes of their semifinal heat was spent banging rails, jockeying for position, trying to out-paddle each other— neither was going to give an inch to the other. Medina ended up getting the better of Kolohe, who finished the contest with a very respectable third place.

inner of the Boys 12 and under division at the recent Western Surfing Association (WSA) contest at San Onofre’s Trail 6, Makai Bray is enjoying every bit of the summer surf season.

The first event of the WSA season, the 10-year-old regular-footer got on a roll early and never looked back.

A regular at the surf spots around San Clemente, he’s spent his summer logging all-day sessions at Uppers, camping and fishing with his family, and of course, winning a contest or two.

Already rocking a Quiksilver sticker on the nose of his board, Bray’s been working closely with Quik’s team manager and talent scout Chad Wells.

He’s also been spending a lot of time working with his coach, Neco Padaratz.

gone a little further, but I’m happy with my result,” said Kolohe afterward. “This is my best result here at Teahupoo, so I’m stoked and I can hopefully carry some momentum back home with me.”

For the effort Kolohe now sits just outside the WSL’s Top 10. Ranked 11th in the world after the Billabong Pro Tahiti, the next contest on the schedule is the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles. With a head full of confidence, a heart full of drive and the comfort of surf in front of a hometown crowd, Kolohe could get on a roll at Lowers. He’s long overdue to win the contest.

A former world tour competitor, Padaratz has relocated from his native Brazil to San Clemente where he’s helping kids like Bray achieve their dreams.

“I’m so proud to coach a future champ,” said Padaratz of his relationship with Bray.

The feeling appears to be mutual as the two are starting to see some great results from their efforts.

The WSA season is officially underway, and the NSSA season isn’t far off. Good luck to Bray and all the groms. SC
