2013 was a very busy year with BMW and MINI continuing to support some very strong offers on the range of new cars and I am pleased to say that these strong offers will continue throughout 2014. It is good to hear from the media that the economy is turning around. This is something that we saw in the last six months at Sandal with increased confidence from our customers visiting our Dealerships. To endorse this further we are actively recruiting new talent across a wide breadth of roles at both our Dealerships. Should you know anyone that might be interested, all our vacancies are listed on our websites. Keeping the good news flowing, BMW are launching an unprecedented number of new models this year with the introduction of over 14 new or life cycle enhancement models. Details of some of these new models are in this edition and include the stunning new 2 Series Coupé and BMW 4 Series Convertible. It's going to be a busy year! MINI are also launching the all new MINI Hatch which is completely new from the ground up and promises to be the most connected MINI ever built. Having seen this car first-hand I can understand why the press are all raving about it with Autocar saying that it's "Better to drive in every way - it's now more entertaining than ever". A great accolade especially as the previous model was so good. As a privately owned company, customer satisfaction remains our priority. To enhance the customer experience further, we have introduced a new role in to our business, that of the 'Product Genius'. More details can be found later in this edition.

Shining Star: Andrzej Brodzinski The BMW group recently set a competition to reward individuals within the network who provide outstanding customer service. Only 16 dealer employees amongst the thousands are rewarded with a 'Shining the Light' award in recognition of their commitment to going above and beyond. Andrzej's award was made even more special as he was nominated by a Sandal customer who quoted BMW “The level of customer service received from Andrzej has been exceptional. He was very keen to sit down and listen to the issue I had experienced with my car and his product knowledge and fault diagnosis was second to none. All in all I have had a very slick service from him.” Sandal Huddersfield Service Manager Mark Huggins said “Since Andrzej has been working for Sandal he has continually worked hard to ensure that everyone he deals with receives the best service available. We are really proud of him and very thankful that our customers take the time to provide their valuable feedback to both BMW and Sandal.” Sandal want to ensure that every customer is delighted with the service they receive and would ask that if, for any reason you don’t feel that you have received the very best experience to ask to speak to a Manager. Sandal Launched the stunning new 4 Series Coupé in real style by creating a ‘retro’ feel. Both Huddersfield and Wakefield Dealerships started the reveal with a procession of BMW 3 Series Coupé models starting from the 1975 E21 through to the E92 model introduced in 2006. Each car was driven through the showroom to the accompaniment of music from the vehicle's launch year. Listening to the music and seeing the way BMW has continued to develop the BMW 3 Series provided a real 'visual' time-line. Who would have thought that the classic E30 launched in 1982 was the same year as Michael Jackson's hit Billie Jean and Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing were in the charts? Where does the time go? The six cars on display were kindly provided by the BMW Owners Club along with some of Sandal's own customers. Special thanks go to those individuals who provided these stunning cars, a number of which have won top awards. Looking back at the line-up of the previous BMW 3 Series models it is noticeable that the styling cues still remain a main focus of BMW automotive design, the classic kidney grill, twin headlamps and the

AGNIFICENT LINEUP
During two weekends in August and September 2013 customers experienced what must have been the ultimate BMW line-up ever assembled at the Sandal BMW Motorshow event. Customers were invited down to Sandal Huddersfield showroom or Normanton Golf Course where a line-up of some of the most desirable BMW models were available to drive back to back. Models included the M135i, M3, M5, M6 Coupé and X6 M50d to name but a few. In addition to the stunning BMW range a selection of competitor models were available to drive and allowed customers to compare their driving dynamics directly after experiencing 'The Ultimate Driving Machine'. Even though the line up included top of the range supercars, the most popular model was the M135i. The M135i was extremely well received and has enough power for the enthusiastic driver yet can still drive like a ‘town car’. With prices starting from just £30,570 and with fuel economy of up to 44.1 miles per gallon the M135i was the most affordable high performance BMW available on the day. The event was superbly organised with over 180 customers and 412 test drives completed over the event. The new BMW 4 Series Convertible is the latest entrant to a market segment where BMW has enjoyed widespread acclaim and great success over five generations of premium Convertibles. The design language introduced with the 4 Series Coupé is evident in this, the second model debut in the series. The result is a sporting yet elegant car, roof raised or lowered, that is clearly distinguished from its 3 Series brethren. It’s a lower, wider, longer car than the old 3 Series Convertible, with a visibly greater sporting intent. The BMW 4 Series Convertible has a folding metal roof which can be raised or lowered in just 20 seconds and at speeds of up to 8mph. The optional wind deflector can now be stored behind the seats when not in use, and a new Air Collar system blows warm air around the necks of front seat occupants for open-air driving on cooler days. At launch the 4 Series Convertible range will consist of two petrol engines and one diesel engine choice, available across five different trim levels. The range is characterised by a marked increase in the standard equipment level offered, despite the minimal increase in price. The modern design of the BMW 1 Series Sports Hatch underlines its individuality. At first sight, the BMW 1 Series Sports Hatch is impressive, with its athletic contours and clean lines. Inside, it is both contemporary and practical, with numerous storage options and an undeniable appeal. Exterior design. Compact and agile, with large inviting rear doors that give an indication of the spacious interior the BMW 1 Series Sports Hatch has instant appeal. Despite the completely new design, from the very first glance this car reveals its unmistakeable BMW 1 Series roots. Distinctive lines and threedimensional effects characterise the dynamically shaped bonnet. The kidney grille in the centre, together with the horizontally sectioned headlights, generates a strong presence, which is further reinforced in the xenon version by the innovative Corona rings. But it’s not just about the technology, it’s the little details that count which is why the Control Display is located in the middle above the centre console so it’s directly in the driver’s line of vision.

The four-cylinder diesel engines in the BMW 1 Series combine low consumption with high performance. In the BMW 116d, 118d, 120d and 125d are the established diesel power engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. This package combines common-rail direct injection and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. This results in the diesel engines offering an unprecedented ratio of performance and fuel consumption. The BMW 120d delivers 135 kW/184 hp at a fuel consumption of 61.4 to 64.2 mpg while accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in 7.2 seconds with CO2 emissions of 116 to 122 g/km. The fully aluminium engine block also reduces the weight and allows the 120d power unit to record the best power-to-weight ratio of its class. Even more economical are the engines in the BMW 116d and 118d, with outstanding consumption figures of 62.8 to 65.7 mpg and an impressively low CO2 value of 114 to 119 g/km (all figures in accordance with EU test cycle, dependent upon the selected tyre format). The BMW 120d xDrive now brings all-wheel-drive to the 1 Series Sports Hatch.

Introducing the all new BMW X5 BMW is taking the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) even further into the realms of luxury cars with the introduction of the new, thirdgeneration X5. BMW invented the concept of the SAV with the original X5 and is the global market leader in the segment, with more than 1.3 million sales of the previous two models. The new X5 delivers major advances in design, luxury, comfort, versatility, efficiency, driving pleasure, safety and connectivity. It will be available with five TwinPower Turbo engines – four diesel and one petrol – a standard eightspeed automatic transmission and the option of two or four-wheel drive (sDrive and xDrive). In the UK it will be offered in SE or M Sport specifications. More driving enjoyment with even greater efficiency BMW coined the phrase ‘Sports Activity Vehicle’ because it perfectly summarises the character of the X5 – a car with the all-roads, allweather capabilities and the space and versatility of an SUV, with the driving enjoyment of a BMW. Those qualities are further advanced with the TwinPower Turbo engines, standard eight-speed automatic transmission and suspension personalisation options of the new model. At the same time these are accompanied by significant reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as a result of a raft of EfficientDynamics technologies. All engines already meet the EU6 emissions standard not due to be introduced until September 2014. In the diesels this is due to a combination of a nitrogen oxide (NOx) absorber catalyst, Selective Catalytic Reduction and a urea (AdBlue) injection which turns the vast majority of NOx in the exhaust stream into harmless nitrogen and water. The range is initially made up of the xDrive30d, M50d and xDrive50i. The 3.0-litre six-cylinder xDrive30d is 19 per cent more fuel efficient, with economy improved by 7.4mpg and CO2 reduced by 33g/km – despite power and torque increases of 13hp and 20Nm. The M50d, powered by a three-stage
single turbo version of the 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, is 12 per cent more efficient. Consumption is reduced by 4.5mpg and CO2 emissions down by 22g/km, while maintaining its high power and torque outputs. The xDrive50i has a new-generation 4.4-litre V8 engine now incorporating VALVETRONIC variable valve timing as well as twin turbochargers. Power is improved by 10 per cent (41hp) and there has been a 50Nm increase in torque, but consumption falls by 20 per cent (4.6mpg) and CO2 emissions have been cut by 50g/km compared with the previous engine. These three engines have recently been joined by a four-cylinder diesel, taking advantage of the new X5’s considerably reduced weight and another six-cylinder diesel. The 2.0-litre fourcylinder turbodiesel engine is new to the X5 and appears in the sole two-wheel drive model, the sDrive25d, and the xDrive25d, which provisionally achieve fuel economy of 50.4mpg and 47.9mpg respectively. The respective provisional CO2 figures are 149g/km and 155g/km. The xDrive40d, with a twin-turbo 3.0litre in-line six-cylinder diesel engine, is expected to have average fuel consumption of 44.1mpg with CO2 emissions of 169g/km. All versions come with an eight-speed automatic transmission which not only adds to driving enjoyment but also makes its own contribution to fuel-saving. The ECO PRO mode adapts the engine management, accelerator response and transmission characteristics to support a particularly fuelefficient driving style, and even programmes the climate control, heated seats and mirrors for the most efficient use of energy. In conjunction with the standard BMW Professional Multimedia navigation system, it can even advise the driver to ease off the accelerator when approaching corners or lower speed limit areas through the Proactive Driving Assistant function. Sandal Living.... Marathon Man... and then some. a world of quality, innovation and value! In the Sandal Living Summer 2012 edition we introduced Mathew Crowhurst (Sandal BMW Wakefield Sales Manager) epic challenge to enter the “hardest footrace in the world” the Marathon Des Sables. Mathew has, as you would expect been training incredibly hard for this event. In addition to his normal six days of intense training, he came up with the idea of trying to break the world record for how many miles run on a treadmill in 12 hours. His latest challenge was held at Xscape in Castleford. This was the perfect venue for Mathew and his support team of family and friends to raise funds for Yorkshire Cancer Research. Starting off at 7am and after 12 hours of non-stop running Mathew beat the current world record of 63 miles by an impressive 1.2 miles, all within the 12 hour period. Not only is he a world record holder but he raised over £1,300. Mathew told Sandal Living “Everything was set and I felt confident that all my training gave me a good chance to achieve the record. I have done a couple of six hour runs and built that up to one ten hour run but never 12 hours in one go. On the day, when I got to ten hours on the treadmill I knew that I would beat the record and was able to pace myself”. Now that the ‘little’ challenge has been completed it’s back to ‘normal’ training in preparation for the Marathon Des Sables, a 155 mile race across the Moroccan Sahara desert with barren desert plains, mountains and huge sand dunes.

THE NEW MINI HATCH REVEALED Even though the new MINI is instantly recognisable, something which comes from having such a globally identifiable design, the car is completely new from the ground up. Every component has been back to the drawing board in an effort to optimise its function, performance and style. The result is ‘The New Original’, a MINI which is distinctly familiar but enhanced in every single way. It features significant improvements in technology, engine efficiency and power delivery, driving dynamics, quality and of course personalisation. Inside, the new MINI Hatch is quieter than the outgoing model, with improvements to acoustic refinement inside the cabin. The new MINI Hatch is more spacious than before, safer, finished to an even higher standard and provides the driver with a more dynamic and performance-oriented experience behind the wheel. Inside the cabin, new technology ensures that the new MINI is the most connected car in its segment. A new LED display concept, the first of its kind, provides the driver with visual feedback whilst operating the car and creates a premium ambience. It reflects a maturity and confidence in the brand’s design and engineering, a car which pays tribute to its unique British heritage yet stands ready to lead MINI into the second half of the decade and beyond. NEW MINI IN DETAIL The body of the new MINI is 3,821mm long, 1,727mm wide and 1,414mm tall. This makes it 98mm longer, 44mm wider and 7mm taller than its predecessor. The wheelbase has been extended by 28mm, while the track width has been enlarged at the front by 42mm and at the rear by 34mm. Behind the changes, the new car has classic MINI proportions and an instantly familiar design that’s packed with character. Traditional cues such as the hexagonal contour of the radiator grille, circular headlights, ‘side scuttle’ indicator surrounds, upright rear light clusters and black lower body edging have all been subtly reinterpreted. In profile, the tapering line of the glass creates a dynamic wedge shape. Below, a visual link between the front and rear wheel arches comes via a striking lower sill line and upper character line, which feature downward curves at both ends. The new MINI is the first car in its segment to offer the option of LED headlamps for both dipped and main beam. They are surrounded by an LED daylight driving ring, the lower section of which reaches down to the white turn indicators. The rear light clusters also feature an all-LED design. Five new exterior colours have been added to MINI’s already extensive palette, while the roof and exterior mirror caps can be finished in black or white as a no cost option. Roof rails are available for the new MINI for the first time. Interior: Hallmark MINI style, new display and operating concept The new MINI’s exterior dimensions mean greater room for up to
four occupants and their luggage, including enhanced shoulder space and larger footwells. The front seats have been given a wider adjustment range, and the base has been lengthened by 23mm for additional comfort and support. A choice of fabric or leather finishes, or a combination of both is available. It’s also easier than ever for rear seat passengers to gain access to the back. The rear bench seat back can be split 60:40. For even greater practicality, the optional storage package includes a luggage compartment floor which can be locked into place at various points and the rear seat backrest features tilt-angle adjustment. Boot volume has been increased by more than 30 per cent to 211 litres. Numerous cup holders and storage facilities make life easier for occupants. With an instantly recognisable design, state-of-the-art functionality and premium colour/material combinations, there’s no mistaking the dashboard of the new MINI Hatch. The horizontal structure of the cockpit, linked to circular and elliptical details, remains, but has evolved to take on a more sophisticated form. At the heart of the design changes is a new display and operating concept, illustrated by the instrument cluster on the steering column. Speed, revs and fuel level are displayed on vertically arranged circular dials. The speedometer scale includes a colour panel for messages and vehicle status displays. The iconic central instrument now has extended functionality. Depending on the optional equipment chosen, it can serve as a four-line TFT display as standard or optional colour screen up to 8.8-inches showing vehicle functions, infotainment, navigation and MINI Connected services. Selection of these functions is performed via a choice of two new controllers, the MINI Controller or MINI Touch Controller, fitted in the centre console which come in conjunction with MINI Visual Boost Radio or the MINI Navigation System. Groundbreaking LED lighting around the new MINI Hatch’s central instrument provides visual feedback to the current situation on the road and to specific operational steps, according to the driver’s preference. For example, when Park Distance Control is activated, the remaining distance to obstacles is shown by means of a ring of light which is illuminated in green, yellow or red - supplementing the graphic display. A change in the car’s driving mode confirmed by LED units which light up in blue, orange or red. Route guidance information provided by the MINI Navigation System is also visually supported by the illuminated ring: the closer the car gets to the turn-off point, the smaller the litup area around the edge of the central instrument. Keyless-go is now standard across the MINI Hatch range. The start/stop toggle switch located in the middle of the centre console features a heartbeat illumination which pulses before the engine is started. A number of switches have been relocated for improved usability, including those for the electric windows, which are now integrated into the door trim.

The new BMW i3 was launched in true Sandal style on Friday 15 November 2013 at Sandal Huddersfield. Customers were invited to join Sandal at 7pm for an evening that not only provided them with the first chance to view this revolutionary new car but also to experience a feast of entertainment that could only be described as ‘electric’. International Violinist Alexandra Parker serenaded customers with a selection of classical music with her electric violin. Alexandra started to learn violin from the tender age of 11 and took to the instrument as though it was a natural extension to her body which certainly showed within the evening's wonderful performances. Guests were provided with a selection of mouth-watering canapés from The Woodman Inn along with refreshing drinks mixed and served by Cellar 88 all courtesy of Sandal. When the time came to reveal the BMW i3 which was hidden away behind an elaborate curtained box, Richard Avery, Sandal Huddersfield’s Dealer Principal spoke briefly about the car before introducing Sales Manager, James Whitefield. James’s recent trip to the BMW i3 factory provided a great insight to some of the technology that makes this car truly revolutionary. James then handed over to Britains Got Talent star 'FiSH on Percussion' who had created an original score of drum beats created from noises made from the BMW i3 (for example sampling the sound of indicators and car doors opening and closing). Each hit of FiSH’s electric drum kit not only created the beat but also created a light show from the drum kit he had invented and built himself. A truly electrifying way to build the tension within the room before the curtain dropped at the height of the crescendo.... The new BMW i3 was revealed. This is not the first time that BMW has treated the compact segment to its customary brand of driving pleasure. The BMW 1 Series, for example, has fulfilled this role for almost 10 years now, its standout position among its rivals rooted most prominently in its rear-wheel-drive concept (still a unique proposition in this class), powerful engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a compelling premium character. Now the BMW 2 Series Coupé takes the levels of driving pleasure on offer in a compact model to even greater heights. The new two door cuts a particularly impressive figure with its distinctive body design, a range of extremely powerful engines and specially configured chassis technology.
The BMW 2 Series Coupé is an even more eye catching creation than its predecessor, the resoundingly successful BMW 1 Series Coupé (of which more than 150,000 units have been sold worldwide). As well as a standalone appearance and increased dimensions, there is also greater depth to its product substance in terms of both technology and standard equipment. The result is a new dimension in driving dynamics, aesthetic appeal and premium allure in the compact segment, highlighted by the “2” in the new car’s model designation. The number 2 has denoted the presence of a supremely sporting driving experience in a compact two-door car for over 45 years, ever since the introduction of the BMW 02 range.
There is clear water between the BMW 2 Series Coupé and the BMW 1 Series, the new model assuming a character all of its own. This differentiation is immediately recognisable in the design of the new car, but it also makes i t s p re s e n c e fe l t i n te r m s o f performance.
Characteristic features of a BMW Coupé. The specific vehicle concept behind the BMW 2 Series Coupé, unique in its segment, is faithfully reflected in its body design. The two door model is first and foremost a Coupé from the
BMW brand, and the design features that identify a member of this special breed, a three box body with clearly defined boot and low slung silhouette, a long bonnet, doors with frameless windows and a dynamically stretched roofline flowing smoothly into the rear end are carried over into a compact model with greater enthusiasm and intent than ever. The ultra sporty driving characteristics of the BMW 2 Series Coupé generated by selection of engines and chassis technology tuned to make the perfect pairing are thus unambiguously expressed in the design of the exterior. The 135 kW/184 hp fourcylinder engine in the BMW 220i Coupé is making its debut in a compact BMW model, and the 240 kW/326 hp sixcylinder in-line engine under the bonnet of the BMW M235i Coupe earns it top billing as the most powerful petrol-driven member of the BMW M Performance Automobile line-up. The specific proportions of the BMW 2 Series Coupé are contained within a body measuring 4,432 millimetres in length. The two-door model is therefore 108 millimetres longer than the BMW 1 Series and 72 millimetres longer than the
outgoing BMW 1 Series Coupé. The new compact Coupé is also 26 millimetres wider than its predecessor (at 1,774 millimetres), and has a 30-millimetre longer wheelbase (2,690 millimetres) and wider tracks (front: 1,521 millimetres, +41 millimetres; rear: 1,556 millimetres, +43 millimetres). At the same time the vehicle height has been lowered by 5 millimetres to 1,418 millimetres. The result is an increase in interior space and 20 litres of extra boot capacity (now 390 litres). Added to which, the 2 Series Coupé also boasts more efficient aerodynamics than both the BMW 1 Series and its predecessor, as reflected in a Cd of 0.29 for the BMW 220i Coupé.

This new feature to Sandal Living provides our customers the opportunity to talk about their BMW, the service they receive from Sandal, and a little about themselves and their businesses. Here we meet Wendy March a talented interior designer who owns and runs New Image Interiors based in Wakefield. Wendy started her business 20 years ago and has been driving BMWs for over 30 years. She moved to Wakefield 15 years ago and started using Sandal for her servicing work. Wendy told Sandal Living “the service I receive from Sandal really is second to none. Also, I was delighted to take part in their annual golf day last year for the first time. I have a number of friends who have played in the tournament and after reading an article in Sandal Living I registered and had the most enjoyable day.” Speaking with Wendy it's clear that she has a lot of passion for her profession. She enjoys working alongside clients helping them with their interior designs. “Most of my work comes from existing customers and recommendations. I will work on any project no matter what size. I have designed three different homes for one client.”

New Image Interior work with private and corporate customers and Wendy has completed a number of new build show homes around the country. “Show homes are a challenge, not with the interior design but by maximising the budget.” Wendy will source all the furniture and even assemble it herself to ensure that budgets are not exceeded. Her beloved BMW is her “workhorse”. Wendy said “everything about my BMW works so well. I wanted a Saloon and the option to drop the rear seats which allows me to carry everything I need with ease. Every BMW I have owned has been so reliable and I couldn't be without it. I do honestly love it and think this is the best one I have owned. The colour is just stunning!” Wendy feels very fortunate to have such a wonderful job with clients that are more like friends and she shares a real passion for design and mentioned “I drive to see clients all over the country, the comfort and ride quality of the BMW make the journeys enjoyable and relaxing. I do get a lot of compliments about the car and I tell people how proud I am of it.” When asking what her dream car would be she said “definitely a BMW and definitely a convertible, the 6 Series may be a little big for me but I could see myself in a 4 Series Convertible.”
