Sandbach United Football Club was established in 2004 when Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers joined forces in their quest to improve the football facilities in Sandbach. Hence the R & A on the club badge. In January 2004, the membership of Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers voted in favour of amalgamation, with the aim of playing as a single club from the start of the 2004/5 season. Sandbach Albion was formerly known as Hays Junior Football Club and was founded in 1994, playing on the pitches of what was then Albion Chemicals. As health and safety issues became more prevalent in the 90’s, they left that site and for 5 years the senior home ground was at Sandbach Cricket Club. The younger sides played their games at junior schools throughout Sandbach. Sandbach Ramblers Youth Football Club was formed in 1995 to provide access to schoolboy football for the youth of Sandbach. Of course there had been a Ramblers team in the town before, Sandbach Ramblers were initially formed in 1920 and played in the Cheshire County League before folding in 1975 reforming in 1979 and disbanding in the late 1980s. In 2006 Sandbach United formed the adult team, which initially competed in the Crewe and District League before moving to the Staffordshire Senior League First Division and then being promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008/9 season. In 2011, the club was awarded grants by the Football Foundation and the local council of over £2 million to build a 3G pitch and 9 grass pitches, together with changing rooms and an education suite. The Sandbach Community Football Centre was opened early in the 2011/12 season. United switched to the Cheshire League in 2011 and won promotion to the Premier Division for the 2013/14 season before moving to The Hallmark Security League for the 2016/17 season. The club has over 600 players and 40+ teams that operate from its Hind Heath Road base, which is just 3 miles from junction 17 of the M6. United have teams playing in the Mid-Cheshire Youth League, and the Cheshire Girls League among others, and the age range covers adults and veterans teams right down to Soccer School for Reception and Year 1 children.
Good afternoon and a warm welcome to you all and especially to our visitors today from Daisy Hill, I sincerely hope you all have a great day and enjoy not only the football on offer but all of the aspects of our fantastic facility This afternoon we welcome back our manager Andy Hockenhull for his first home game of the season. Andy arrived back from holiday having missed the first two games and quickly got the team back on track with a win on the road at Atherton. At the time of writing the programme we will have missed the midweek result at St Helens due to print deadlines due to the second short turn around in fixtures this time being a Thursday evening into the Saturday. The last of course being the first game against Holker on the Saturday followed by Widnes on the Monday. Certainly a challenge, but thankfully we have a young fit squad and the fixtures nearby certainly a blessing. Sandbach found themselves in good form finishing off the pre-season having won the last three games in the run up to the start of the league fixtures, having dispatched some strong opposition West Didsbury & Chorlton, Stockport County Reserves and AFC Liverpool. This was a great test of fitness and our level of football setting a bench mark to follow. We started our first season at step 6 with a home fixture, which proved challenging in terms of getting to grips with the protocol and administration on match day. Spinning plates springs to mind as an appropriate term! But I am sure we will get used to it in the office. It all looked very promising though on a glorious sunny day on the pitch as we took a very early lead in our game against Holker OB with Danny Bartle opening the scoring and becoming the first Sandbach player to score at step 6. Was this to be the perfect start? With records to be set. Holker looked unorganised in the first half, maybe a result of trying to work out the playing style of Sandbach a relatively unknown side within the league. Holker‚ there defence seemed insistent on trying to help us score rather than themselves, serving up mistake after mistake and it was a poor delivery from the keeper which cost them the first goal. The first half was dominated by the aggressive pacey passing style often seen by Sandbach and we were desperately unlucky to concede an equaliser to Holker minutes before half time when Bradders was alleged to have brought down the Holker player in the box. Disappointingly the referee blew for the penalty despite it looking very clearly like the ball was won from the side and no flag from the linesman. But you make and take your chances as they fall and play to the whistle. A well struck penalty giving the keeper no chance, gave Holker that boost coming in for the break levelling the game, ensuring a tasty second half. Holker continued to pressure early in the second half, and it was only a matter of 10 minutes before they added a second to the tally. The run of play now firmly against the home side, in front of a crowd of 85 and It would be later in the second half when Sandbach would find the opportunity to tie the game and take a deserved point. Penalty!! The crowd lifted in spirit
but it was soon dashed as the spot kick from Tommy Watkin soared over the Holker Bar and the moment lost. (Sandbach United 1 Holker OB 2 the final score on the opening day). A quick turnaround for the Monday evening game against Widnes was next up. The lads excited at the prospect of playing in such a great venue and a first for them to see their name in lights on the magnificent scoreboard. The evening kick off and traffic scuppered an early arrival and curbed some of the training/warm up time but spirit and morale was high. It looked promising from the kick off to be an exciting game with both sides playing decent football and at a fast pace on a large pitch. Again though it was Sandbach with the early chances and midway through the first half a chance which looked certain to go in after a great cross from Laney, Sandbach fans standing ready to cheer, sure that Alfred was not going to miss. Surely it was a goal! Alas he headed wide from yards out, certainly would have been easier to score, a real let off for Widnes. The game was very much evenly balanced. When Sandbach were caught out late on in the first half, for a second game running, when Widnes were granted a golden opportunity left unmarked with an easy chance which looped agonisingly slowly into the goal by the post as time appeared to stand still. The second half was simply beautiful to watch and Sandbach took the game to Widnes with panache and great passing but it was to be fruitless as the Widnes back four stood strong and resolute denying chance after chance before they countered and bagged a second, finishing the game off. With two games back to back ending in narrow defeat against two fancied sides all was not lost and Sandbach looked to the following Saturday away to Atherton LR and welcomed their manager back from holiday. The team spirit on the back of the away loss to Widnes, was strong and surely at some point a team would fall victim to the wrath of the attacking prowess of United hungry for a success. Atherton LR were that team to feel the full force, leaking an early goad to a very much on form Sandbach, who tore the Atherton defence apart time and time again. Meaning business, Josh Lane opened the scoring early on reeling Atherton LR and stunning the onlookers. Chance after chance would come and some glorious opportunities missed, but the relentless pressure and opportunities could only mean one thing. A second goal from Danny Bartle and a minute later another and third for Sandbach from Josh Lane. It could easily have been six or seven for the visiting side but it was Atherton who got a consolation goal minutes from the end making it a 3-1 victory for Sandbach away from home. Probably a bit of a let off for Atherton who will reflect and be licking wounds from a game they no doubt expected to win. From September we hope to have some new stewards on hand to help out on match days as some of our junior sides will return for their start of their season and have offered to assist. Situated one and a half miles south of Westhoughton town centre, four miles from Bolton and five miles from the the Macron Stadium, home of Bolton Wanderers, the village of Daisy Hill first saw football in season 1894-95 although it is possible that football was being played in the area for some years prior to that date. The first known honours for the club came in 1896-97 when the Wigan and District League Championship and the Westhoughton Cup were won without losing a match. The location of the clubs ground in those days is unknown but the present ground was used during the first world war period when the club played in the Leigh and District Senior Sunday School League. The club then joined the Westhoughton League and during the 1920’s and 1930’s won many honours in what was one of the strongest local leagues at the time. Little is known of the period leading up to the second world war but the club re-formed in 1951 playing in the Westhoughton League on the St. James Street Recreation Ground/Cricket Ground until the landowner made an offer to the club to return to New Sirs in 1957. The acquisition of the lease was a major step forward and gave aspiration to move into the Bolton Combination and develop into one of the most formidable clubs in the area. Dressing rooms were erected at the ground for the start of the 1968/69 season whilst on the field the club won the Bolton Combination Premier Division on four occasions, the Bolton Combination Cup on four occasions and the Lancashire Amateur Shield twice during the 60’s and 70’s. In 1978 the Club was accepted into the Lancashire Football Combination and with the advent of the Non-League football pyramid and the subsequent amalgamation of the Lancashire Football Combination and the Cheshire County League the Club became a founder member of the North West Counties League giving them the opportunity to play in and bring national competition to the village. With the National League System requiring clubs to meet new standards for facilities, new dressing rooms and a clubhouse for social activities were erected at New Sirs in 1982. Since then improvement of the clubs facilities has been ongoing and for the 2005-2006 season a floodlighting system has been installed which has allowed the club to remain in the National League System and return to National and County competitions. The club also comprises an U/18’s Youth Team playing in the North West Youth Alliance and a thriving junior section playing in the Bolton, Bury and District Junior Football League. Notable players include: Dick Pollard and Billy Farrimond, both of whom went on to play cricket for Lancashire and England, Alf Watkinson, grandfather of the former Lancashire Cricket Club Captain Mike Watkinson went on to sign for Blackpool. (Mike himself had the odd game for the club). Sam Marsh (Bolton Wanderers and Bury), Alf Gray (Torquay United and Lincoln City), Greg Strong (Motherwell) and Danny Williams (Inverness Caledonian Thistle) began their careers in senior or junior football at Daisy Hill Football Club.
