Sandbach United Football Club was established in 2004 when Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers joined forces in their quest to improve the football facilities in Sandbach. Hence the R & A on the club badge. In January 2004, the membership of Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers voted in favour of amalgamation, with the aim of playing as a single club from the start of the 2004/5 season. Sandbach Albion was formerly known as Hays Junior Football Club and was founded in 1994, playing on the pitches of what was then Albion Chemicals. As health and safety issues became more prevalent in the 90’s, they left that site and for 5 years the senior home ground was at Sandbach Cricket Club. The younger sides played their games at junior schools throughout Sandbach. Sandbach Ramblers Youth Football Club was formed in 1995 to provide access to schoolboy football for the youth of Sandbach. Of course there had been a Ramblers team in the town before, Sandbach Ramblers were initially formed in 1920 and played in the Cheshire County League before folding in 1975 reforming in 1979 and disbanding in the late 1980s. In 2006 Sandbach United formed the adult team, which initially competed in the Crewe and District League before moving to the Staffordshire Senior League First Division and then being promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008/9 season. In 2011, the club was awarded grants by the Football Foundation and the local council of over £2 million to build a 3G pitch and 9 grass pitches, together with changing rooms and an education suite. The Sandbach Community Football Centre was opened early in the 2011/12 season. United switched to the Cheshire League in 2011 and won promotion to the Premier Division for the 2013/14 season before moving to The Hallmark Security League for the 2016/17 season. The club has over 600 players and 40+ teams that operate from its Hind Heath Road base, which is just 3 miles from junction 17 of the M6. United have teams playing in the Mid-Cheshire Youth League, and the Cheshire Girls League among others, and the age range covers adults and veterans teams right down to Soccer School for Reception and Year 1 children.
Jacque Talbot reports as Sandbach secure 3 points in 1-0 victory over battling Bacup Borough. Sanchbach gained yet another win in the Hallmark Security League, in a convincing win against Bacup Borough. Bacup pressed well early in the game, however it was the home team with the first real chance; Josh Lane's glancing header was just over from Thomas Watkin’s pinpoint free kick. Bacup kept up the heat, looking disciplined and organised, but it was the astounding defensive displays from Bradley Cooper and Nathan Jones that thwarted any real threat from the Lancashire side. At the other end of the pitch, on 19 minutes, Sandbach grabbed the first and only goal of the game. Well worked from a throw-in, Sandbach played a clever passing game which landed into the feet of Dereece Gardener, who expertly layed off Connor Sutton to crack the ball high and to the keepers right, from just inside the box. Sandbach grew confident, taking the game to Bacup. Alfred Hammond’s audacious overhead effort was safely caught by the Bacup keeper. The second half had both teams opening up. Josh Lane and Dereece Gardner linked up well out wide, but Lane just couldn’t find the target from inside the area. Substitute, Carlos Correia seemed increasingly dangerous for Sandbach, his clever dink into the box set up Dereece Gardner who fractionally headed over the bar from close range. Bacup persisted and in the final few minutes had their best chance of the game, but it was a rush of blood to the head and the ball went agonisingly wide of the post. Cheers rang around Sandbachs Community Football Centre at full time, as Sandbach go on to claim yet another important win. Man of the match: Mathew Pearson – vocal, persistent and didn’t let the opposition get through him. Over half the league’s clubs were in cup action in the FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round at the weekend, alongside some interesting games in both divisions. There were four FA Vase ties that paired clubs from our league together on Saturday, and in three of the four games the home sides emerged victorious. Two goals from Steve Jones helped Bootle to a 4-1 win over Maine Road at the Delta Taxis Stadium, while Runcorn Town beat Winsford United by the same score at the Pavilions. An 80th minute winner from Taylor Attrell saw Alsager Town through to a 2-1 win against Squires Gate, and after being two goals down after 12 minutes at St Helens Town, Chadderton staged an impressive comeback to eventually win 5-3. Elsewhere, a second half hat trick from Joseph Gaughan was the highlight of Barnoldswick Town’s 4-0 win at Darlington Railway Athletic, and three other clubs also won away ties at clubs from outside our league. Two goals from James Kirby proved to be decisive in earning Congleton Town a 3-2 win at Armthorpe Welfare, first half goals from Ross Wilson and player-manager James Gill saw Silsden through to a 2-1 win at Knaresborough Town, and goals in the last 13 minutes from Jason McShane and Kevin Towey earned Widnes a 2-0 win at Maltby Main. Five clubs won home ties against clubs from other leagues, Daisy Hill catching the eye with a 4-1 win over Garforth Town in which Ashley Stott scored twice. A single goal from Christian Lawlor settled Irlam's 1-0 win over Selby Town, and Ashtonin-Makerfield hosted two Vase ties a mile apart, with Athletic winning 2-0 against Athersley Recreation, and two penalties from Jordan Holmes helping Town to a 4-2 win over Parkgate. Barnton needed extra time to eventually get the better of Harworth Colliery, with Lee Vaughan and Chris Smith both scoring twice in a game that ended 5-2 after the sides were tied at 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes. However, both of our Shropshire clubs saw their Vase ties end with home defeats after extra time, FC Oswestry Town going down 3-1 to Walsall Wood, and Whitchurch Alport lost 2-1 at home to Wellington. Carlisle City’s first ever Vase game ended with a 2-1 home defeat to Team Northumbria and AFC Darwen suffered the same result at home to Pickering Town, as did Nelson at home to Heaton Stannington Cheadle Town failed to repeat their early season FA Cup in the Vase, losing 1-0 at Staveley Miners Welfare, and Eccleshall had a day to forget at Brocton, losing 6-0.

The original Ashton Town joined Division Two of the Lancashire Combination in 1903, and were promoted to Division One in their first season. However, they were relegated back to Division Two after finishing sixteenth in their first season in Division One. Towards the end of the 1910–11 season the club withdrew from the league and their fixtures were taken over by Tyldesley Albion. The current club was established in 1953 as Makerfield Mill. They initially played in the Wigan Sunday School League, before moving to the St Helens Combination, in which they played for three years, winning Division Two in 1957–58. In 1958 they joined the Warrington and District Amateur League, winning Division One in 1959–60 and 1950–61. In 1962 the club were renamed Ashton Town after being forced out of their Windsor Road ground and moving home matches to a public park pitch at Whithill Street Recreation Ground in Bryn. However, they won the league again in 1962–63 and 1963–64. In 1964 the club purchased their Edge Green Street ground, which had currently hosted Stubshaw Cross Rovers. They finished as Division One champions for a fifth time in 1964–65, before winning a sixth title in 1969–70. They joined the Lancashire Combination in 1971, moved to Division Two of the Cheshire County League in 1978 and became a founder member of Division Three the North West Counties League in 1982. In 1985 the club dropped into the Manchester League, but returned to Division Three of the North West Counties League the following season. After Division Three was merged into Division Two in 1987, the club have remained at the same level since.
