Sandbach United Football Club was established in 2004 when Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers joined forces in their quest to improve the football facilities in Sandbach. Hence the R & A on the club badge. In January 2004, the membership of Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers voted in favour of amalgamation, with the aim of playing as a single club from the start of the 2004/5 season. Sandbach Albion was formerly known as Hays Junior Football Club and was founded in 1994, playing on the pitches of what was then Albion Chemicals. As health and safety issues became more prevalent in the 90’s, they left that site and for 5 years the senior home ground was at Sandbach Cricket Club. The younger sides played their games at junior schools throughout Sandbach. Sandbach Ramblers Youth Football Club was formed in 1995 to provide access to schoolboy football for the youth of Sandbach. Of course there had been a Ramblers team in the town before, Sandbach Ramblers were initially formed in 1920 and played in the Cheshire County League before folding in 1975 reforming in 1979 and disbanding in the late 1980s. In 2006 Sandbach United formed the adult team, which initially competed in the Crewe and District League before moving to the Staffordshire Senior League First Division and then being promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008/9 season. In 2011, the club was awarded grants by the Football Foundation and the local council of over £2 million to build a 3G pitch and 9 grass pitches, together with changing rooms and an education suite. The Sandbach Community Football Centre was opened early in the 2011/12 season. United switched to the Cheshire League in 2011 and won promotion to the Premier Division for the 2013/14 season before moving to The Hallmark Security League for the 2016/17 season. The club has over 600 players and 40+ teams that operate from its Hind Heath Road base, which is just 3 miles from junction 17 of the M6. United have teams playing in the Mid-Cheshire Youth League, and the Cheshire Girls League among others, and the age range covers adults and veterans teams right down to Soccer School for Reception and Year 1 children.
Carlisle City 0 – Sandbach United 3 Jacque Talbot reports from Gillford Park Stadium as Sandbach made it two successive victories in a convincing 3-0 win over Carlisle City. Sandbach stated their intent in the opening minutes, Connor Sutton played a delightful give and go with Josh Lane whose pass to George Riley led to a chance. Riley’s lashed shot was well blocked by a Carlisle defender. Just after 15 minutes, Jamie Morgan found himself in space after a good piece of possession play by Sandbach. His cross was headed just wide of the mark by striker Daniel Bartle. Ten minutes after, Sandbach won a free kick just outside the box. George Riley laid off the ball to Josh Lane who blazed the ball high over the crossbar. A counter saw Josh Lane expertly bring down a cleared ball into his control. His clever switch to Daniel Bartle allowed the number 9 to have yards of space. The final shot was thumped over the bar. On 38 minutes, attacker Connor Sutton came off the field with a hamstring injury and was replaced by Chris Jackson. Sandbach were keeping the pressure on their northern rivals as Carlisle were clearly struggling against the Cheshire side’s waves of attacks. However, despite the chances, the half ended goalless. After the break on 46 minutes, Sandbach got their goal. Oumar Mballo smashed the ball using his left foot, from inside the box with the assist coming from striker Daniel Bartle, who neatly laid the ball into Oumar's path. After the hour mark Daniel Bartle strode past two Carlisle defenders with ease, his shot was tame and safely caught by the Carlisle keeper. Though Carlisle started to respond, it was Sandbach who were creating the clear chances. Substitute Thomas Watkin took a decent crack at goal from 30 yards outside the box but it was just wide. Sandbach’s second came on 80 minutes when Daniel Bartle napped the bouncing ball in front of the Carlisle keeper, coolly taking around the grounded goalie and taking no chances by dribbling the ball into the open net to make it 2-0 to the visitors. The final goal came when Josh Lane hit a long ball over the top, Bartle took a great touch clearing the first defender and getting in front of the frustrated second defender who brought him down inside the penalty box. On 83 minutes, Bartle made no mistakes with the penalty, burying the ball to the keeper’s left hand side.

Charnock on fire – anyone not terrified? League or cup, home or away, it doesn’t matter to Charnock Richard at the moment. Saturday’s FA Vase win over Premier Division Barnoldswick Town extended their winning run to ten successive wins, and in those games they have only failed to score less than three goals on one occasion – and that was at Evo-Stik League side Bamber Bridge when they won 2-0 in the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy. A Twitter message on the club’s Twitter feed after Saturday’s win said: “Draw for the next round of the FA Vase is Monday at 1pm, anyone fancy playing us?”. Only the brave would say yes at the moment.
Sandbach looking good Another of the newcomers who have adjusted quickly to life in Division One are Sandbach United, whose win at Carlisle City on Saturday and Widnes on Tuesday night with goals from Josh Lane and two from Danny Bartle continued a run of form that has seen them win five of the last six games. It’s now just two defeats in 11 for Andy Hockenhull’s men, Sandbach are looking like a side who will be among the promotion contenders.
Widnes on a roll One team quietly going about their business at the moment are Widnes, who had a blank day on Saturday, but continued their good form in midweek with a fine 2-1 win at promotion chasing City of Liverpool.

Atherton Collieries Football Club was established in 1916 by miners from the six pits which were then operative within the old urban district of Atherton. The football club became the latest part of an ever growing sports group that was organised by the Atherton Collieries Joint Association. Between 1919 and 1965 the club were winners of the Bolton Combination League ten times. Collieries established a noted reputation in Lancashire and by 1964-65 had won the Lancashire Junior Shield six times, a record which is still unsurpassed. They joined the North West Counties League as founder members in 1982, winning the third division in 1986-87. During 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons Anthony Pilkington made 35 appearances for the club scoring 19 goals. Three of these goals came in the away match at FC United which Collieries infamously won 3-0. This caught the attention of many local clubs and it was Stockport County who secured his services. The striker has since played for Huddersfield Town, Norwich City and the Republic of Ireland. Season 2011/12 saw the club finish fourth in the First Division but another trophy was added to the honours board. The Bolton Hospital Cup was won for the first time in 25 years with a penalty shootout triumph over Eagley. The Reebok final had ended 2-2 with Gary Burnett scoring both Collieries goals as he put in a man of the match performance. Seasons 2012/13 and 2013/14 saw the team lead the NWCFL First Division in the early stages but fall away towards the end. Steve Pilling was a committed servant to the club and in his five seasons at the club the team finished in 6th, 5th, 4th, 4th and 5th position respectively. Michael Clegg took over the managerial reins at the commencement of the 2014/15 campaign. He had previously enjoyed stints at near neighbours Pennington and Atherton LR. With the help of strong backroom support and local players he stated that he wanted to gain promotion with a side that would consist of Atherton based players. An opening day win at Cammell Laird, who went on to finish runners up, set high standards for the rest of the campaign. What followed was to be the club’s best season in their history. Promotion back to the NWCFL Premier Division was clinched with a memorable 3-0 victory at Atherton LR on Easter Monday. Five matches after this, Collieries travelled to Cheadle Town for a midweek match knowing that a win would see them mathematically win the league. The score was 1-1 going into the final few minutes when Luke Gibson scored to send a large away following into raptures.
