Sandbach United Football Club was established in 2004 when Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers joined forces in their quest to improve the football facilities in Sandbach. Hence the R & A on the club badge. In January 2004, the membership of Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers voted in favour of amalgamation, with the aim of playing as a single club from the start of the 2004/5 season. Sandbach Albion was formerly known as Hays Junior Football Club and was founded in 1994, playing on the pitches of what was then Albion Chemicals. As health and safety issues became more prevalent in the 90’s, they left that site and for 5 years the senior home ground was at Sandbach Cricket Club. The younger sides played their games at junior schools throughout Sandbach. Sandbach Ramblers Youth Football Club was formed in 1995 to provide access to schoolboy football for the youth of Sandbach. Of course there had been a Ramblers team in the town before, Sandbach Ramblers were initially formed in 1920 and played in the Cheshire County League before folding in 1975 reforming in 1979 and disbanding in the late 1980s. In 2006 Sandbach United formed the adult team, which initially competed in the Crewe and District League before moving to the Staffordshire Senior League First Division and then being promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008/9 season. In 2011, the club was awarded grants by the Football Foundation and the local council of over £2 million to build a 3G pitch and 9 grass pitches, together with changing rooms and an education suite. The Sandbach Community Football Centre was opened early in the 2011/12 season. United switched to the Cheshire League in 2011 and won promotion to the Premier Division for the 2013/14 season before moving to The Hallmark Security League for the 2016/17 season. The club has over 600 players and 40+ teams that operate from its Hind Heath Road base, which is just 3 miles from junction 17 of the M6. United have teams playing in the Mid-Cheshire Youth League, and the Cheshire Girls League among others, and the age range covers adults and veterans teams right down to Soccer School for Reception and Year 1 children.

Hockenhull’s new Knight in shining armour helps Sandbach get 2-1 victory over Silsden AFC Sandbach United manager, Andy Hockenhull called new signing, Aaron Knight “unbelievable” as Sandbach found two goals and claimed three points in a league win over Silsden AFC. The visitors were without Thomas Watkin who has picked up a possibly serious injury, with Hockenhull stating that it “was not good” and that “he has to see a specialist”. Goal-grabbing forward Danny Bartle was also out with suspension but luckily new man, Aaron Knight guided the Cheshire side to the win with a moment of brilliance. The two teams could not find the net in the first half and it was a scrappy affair. A few opportunities found its way along Sandbach’s right hand side, however, the hosts were unable to make the most of it as their crosses flew wildly over and wide. Sandbach made the most of set-pieces, Silsden were unable to contain George Riley’s pinpoint balls into the box, creating many chances for Sandbach to score. A corner kick came in on 20 minutes with Josh Lane being the first to miss, his headed effort should have hit the target but it sailed over the crossbar.

Deva 3 v Sandbach 1 Sandbach made the short journey to Chester to face a Deva team that were second in the league, Sandbach were missing Dan Landstrom and Harry Nash through injury, and Harrison Bostock. The pitch was in good condition and the team made a good start to the game passing the ball well and looking well organized when they lost ball, the Deva team did not test Warburton in goal for the first twenty minutes, Sandbach were growing in confidence and Mellor saw his header go just wide. Sandbach then took the lead when Edwards did well down the right and saw his cross go in the goal off a Deva player. Deva now put the pressure on the Sandbach defence and the goal, the back four stayed strong and Warbuton in goal made two good saves, Deva were then awarded a penalty which they missed, Coppenhall and Mellor combined for Coppenhall to see his shot go just wide. Half time the coaches made the point of telling the lads to be strong for the first twenty minutes and to eliminate silly mistakes. Sandbach came under heavy pressure for the first ten minutes and they stood up to it, unfortunately, they then made three individual mistakes which led to the Deva equaliser. Sandbach were now in a battle to gain control again, they kept trying to pass the ball but just lacked the quality around the edge of the box. Deva then scored again with a well taken shot from twenty yards. Sandbach then came back at Deva and should have equalised when Hancock had a great chance at the back post. Deva then scored again with Sandbach pushing players forward for the equaliser, Deva punished them with a quick breakaway and made it 3 – 1. Sandbach had competed well against a team at the top of the league and were disappointed with the result. MoM: Jake Monks.

The genesis of this club goes all the way back to 2008 and can be traced through lots of small meetings, chats, encounters, and talk. The club that has now become City of Liverpool FC had hovered just beneath the surface for six years before an angry “call to arms” email was sent out to 10 likeminded people in October of 2014. A meeting was hastily arranged and a four hour discussion ensued between six people, although it could rightly be called “putting the world to rights” as much as it could be called a meeting. Not much came out of that first meeting other than a general consensus that we would all meet again soon and keep talking. The next meeting got cancelled at very late notice when two people couldn’t attend and by the time we met again in November, our numbers were down to three people only; Paul Manning, Peter Furmedge & Martin Jones but that meeting in November 2014 was a crucial milestone in the history of the club. At that meeting the question was asked “When is this football club going to play football” and the process began that concluded with our successful appeal at Wembley on June 8th 2016. We all agreed that August 2016 was when we should be playing football, giving ourselves a generous 21 months to achieve our dream. Once we agreed the target date, we worked backwards trying to work out the milestones and hurdles we would have to get over to be playing in what is now the Hallmark Security Football League Division One.
