Sandbach United Football Club was established in 2004 when Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers joined forces in their quest to improve the football facilities in Sandbach. Hence the R & A on the club badge. In January 2004, the membership of Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers voted in favour of amalgamation, with the aim of playing as a single club from the start of the 2004/5 season. Sandbach Albion was formerly known as Hays Junior Football Club and was founded in 1994, playing on the pitches of what was then Albion Chemicals. As health and safety issues became more prevalent in the 90’s, they left that site and for 5 years the senior home ground was at Sandbach Cricket Club. The younger sides played their games at junior schools throughout Sandbach. Sandbach Ramblers Youth Football Club was formed in 1995 to provide access to schoolboy football for the youth of Sandbach. Of course there had been a Ramblers team in the town before, Sandbach Ramblers were initially formed in 1920 and played in the Cheshire County League before folding in 1975 reforming in 1979 and disbanding in the late 1980s. In 2006 Sandbach United formed the adult team, which initially competed in the Crewe and District League before moving to the Staffordshire Senior League First Division and then being promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008/9 season. In 2011, the club was awarded grants by the Football Foundation and the local council of over £2 million to build a 3G pitch and 9 grass pitches, together with changing rooms and an education suite. The Sandbach Community Football Centre was opened early in the 2011/12 season. United switched to the Cheshire League in 2011 and won promotion to the Premier Division for the 2013/14 season before moving to The Hallmark Security League for the 2016/17 season. The club has over 600 players and 40+ teams that operate from its Hind Heath Road base, which is just 3 miles from junction 17 of the M6. United have teams playing in the Mid-Cheshire Youth League, and the Cheshire Girls League among others, and the age range covers adults and veterans teams right down to Soccer School for Reception and Year 1 children.

LEAGUE UPDATE The keenly competitive promotion chase in the First Division took another twist with Litherland REMYCA moving to the top of the table thanks to a 5-1 win at home to bottom club Ashton Town. Former Town skipper Sam Wilkie came back to haunt his old side with two late goals. Remy’s move to the top of the table was at the expense of Whitchurch Alport, who lost 3-1 at home to Prestwich Heys, their second successive defeat. Lee Bruce scored twice for the visitors, whose win moves them up to eighth place. After two weeks of inactivity City of Liverpool returned with a bang, winning 6-0 at Carlisle City. Daley Woods and David Forbes both scored twice for the Purples, who are in third place, five points behind Merseyside neighbours REMYCA. Alsager Town remain in fifth place despite going down 2-1 at Silsden, for whom Nicholas McNally scored both goals. The final play off place is occupied by Sandbach United, who struggled to break down stubborn resistance from AFC Blackpool, but a Josh Lane penalty 13 minutes from time clinched a 1-0 home win. Widnes are just outside the play off positions and found themselves two goals down after 25 minutes at home to Stockport Town, but second half goals from Kevin Pollard and Kevin Towey earned them a point from a 2-2 draw. Elsewhere, Chadderton were two goals down after 17 minutes at home to FC Oswestry Town, but recovered to eventually win 4-2, and there was the same score over in Prescot where St Helens Town triumphed over Daisy Hill. Cheadle Town were three goals up in 28 minutes against Holker Old Boys at Park Road, eventually winning 3-1, and there was an important win for Atherton LR in the relegation clash at Eccleshall, where Theo Kidd scored the only goal of the game in the 54th minute.

In 1933 the Chorley Sunday League became the Chorley Alliance League and a Charnock Richard village team was entered, but on the outbreak of the Second World War the league and team were temporarily suspended. At the end of the War, in 1945, the Chorley Alliance League was reformed along with Charnock Richard F.C. The team proved to be a tremendous success, eventually winning the league title in the 1947-48 season, losing only two games, and scoring 107 goals. This success prompted them to try and run two teams, but they ran into difficulties and the club closed at the end of the 1948-49 season. In 1955, under the leadership of Ron Wilcox, the present club was reformed, and once again played in the Chorley Alliance League. In 1957 they moved to the Preston & District League, where they have spent most of their time, apart from a brief flirtation with the Bolton Combination. In the Preston & District League they were soon amongst the honours, beating English Electric in 1957-58 to take the Guildhall Cup. Success also came in this competition in seasons 1963-64, 1968-69, and more recently in 1992-93. A number of league championships have also come their way, including winning the Premier Division in 1988-89. The 1967-68 season saw the village team take the Lancashire Amateur Shield, beating Vickers Sports Club from Barrow after a replay. Further success came in the Shield in seasons 2001-2, 2006-07, 2010-11 and 2011-12. In 1993 the club moved to the West Lancashire League, and since then both the First and Second teams have gained promotion to the top division of their respective sections. They have also been successful in the West Lancashire League, winning the Premier Division Championship on seven occasions, in seasons 1997-98, 2003-04, 2008-09, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15. They also won the Richardson Cup in 2001-02, 2003-04, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16. Numerous other honours have also come their way over the years including two recent Goldline Trophy victories at Bolton Wanderers Reebok Stadium ,the Wilf Carr Memorial Trophy in 2009, and the Northern Counties Senior Cup in 2012-13. The Reserve team have also been amongst the honours in the West Lancashire League. Following winning the Reserve Division championship in seasons 1996-97 and 1997-98, they completed a league and Houston Cup double in 2013-14, losing only one game in the entire season. The 2013-14 season was therefore one of the best ever seasons for the club in the

West Lancashire League with both the 1st Team and Reserves completing league and cup doubles. The club has however kept its links with the Preston & District League (now renamed The Mid Lancashire League), they have an Academy team and Veterans team playing in that league. The Academy team caters for younger players making the step up into adult football. The three senior teams are now referred to as the First team, Reserve team, and Academy team. A large number of junior teams also play in the Mid Lancs Colts Junior Football League and the Central Lancashire Junior Football League, with a youth team also playing in the Lancashire Sunday Football League. The club moved to Mossie Close in Charter Lane in 1968, after playing elsewhere in the village, and the adjoining club house was opened in 1988. A new ground has recently been developed on the opposite side of Charter Lane, known as Mossie Park, which now stages West Lancashire League games, with the new changing rooms having been opened in July 2011. The club progressed to the North West Counties League in 2016-17 after finishing as runners-up in the West Lancashire League in the previous season.

Sandbach United manager Andy Hockenhull, says he is confident his side can build on the good start they have made to their first season in Division One. The club moved up from the Cheshire League in the summer, with the move for the first team continuing the development of a club that had previously focussed on their junior set up, and now with the team sitting in a play-off position (6th), the signs are they are more than adapting to life at the higher level. It’s been a promising start for a club that, as Andy pointed out, has only in recent years turned attention to adult senior football. We had 44 kids’ teams, for both boys and girls, before we had a first team, and that is now starting to bear fruit. We’ve gone from starting out years ago in a local league, and now we’re into the North West Counties and in a play-off position. The hard work from the lads and all involved in the club is now paying off.
