Sandbach United Football Club was established in 2004 when Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers joined forces in their quest to improve the football facilities in Sandbach. Hence the R & A on the club badge. In January 2004, the membership of Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers voted in favour of amalgamation, with the aim of playing as a single club from the start of the 2004/5 season. Sandbach Albion was formerly known as Hays Junior Football Club and was founded in 1994, playing on the pitches of what was then Albion Chemicals. As health and safety issues became more prevalent in the 90’s, they left that site and for 5 years the senior home ground was at Sandbach Cricket Club. The younger sides played their games at junior schools throughout Sandbach. Sandbach Ramblers Youth Football Club was formed in 1995 to provide access to schoolboy football for the youth of Sandbach. Of course there had been a Ramblers team in the town before, Sandbach Ramblers were initially formed in 1920 and played in the Cheshire County League before folding in 1975 reforming in 1979 and disbanding in the late 1980s. In 2006 Sandbach United formed the adult team, which initially competed in the Crewe and District League before moving to the Staffordshire Senior League First Division and then being promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008/9 season. In 2011, the club was awarded grants by the Football Foundation and the local council of over £2 million to build a 3G pitch and 9 grass pitches, together with changing rooms and an education suite. The Sandbach Community Football Centre was opened early in the 2011/12 season. United switched to the Cheshire League in 2011 and won promotion to the Premier Division for the 2013/14 season before moving to The Hallmark Security League for the 2016/17 season. The club has over 600 players and 40+ teams that operate from its Hind Heath Road base, which is just 3 miles from junction 17 of the M6. United have teams playing in the Mid-Cheshire Youth League, and the Cheshire Girls League among others, and the age range covers adults and veterans teams right down to Soccer School for Reception and Year 1 children.

SANDBACH UNITED v CHARNOCK RICHARD Sandbach United moved up into fourth place with a 3-1 home win over fellow promotion rivals Charnock Richard, who now occupy the final play off place. Jamie Morgan ensured they hit the ground running with a goal in the opening minute, and Boris Mellingui and Dereece Gardner struck twice in the space of five second half minutes to secure the points.

SANDBACH UNITED v STOCKPORT TOWN Stockport Town kept up their unbeaten run under manager Dave Wild with a 2-1 over Sandbach United at the Stockport Sports Village. A deflected shot gave the Lions an 11th minute lead they held for only a minute before Boris Melingui equalised for Sandbach. The decisive goal arrived on 27 minutes when Conor Downes slotted home moments after Town had a penalty claim waved away by the referee.

SEMI FINAL Sandbach were on the road again. First Division Cup Semi Final – First Leg, Sandbach United established a healthy advantage for the second leg in a fortnight’s time with a 3-1 win at Holker Old Boys. Two goals in the last eighteen minutes from Boris Melingui made it an enjoyable afternoon for the travelling contingent from Cheshire on their first ever visit to Rakesmoor Lane.

PERFORMANCE OF THE SEASON FROM THE

SANDBACH TEAM City of Liverpool have an awesome record at home often thrashing the opposition but today they met a match and arguably we were the better quality team; no bookings, clean sheet – and 4 points from them over two games. Liverpool learnt how they should play today. It was said by those watching that if a team wants to get promoted they need to play like Sandbach.

DAISY HILL v SANDBACH UNITED Daisy Hill shared a 3-3 draw with Sandbach United at New Sirs, Ashley Stott rescuing a point for Daisy with his second goal of the game from the penalty spot, after two goals from Derrece Gardner and one from Ryan Allcock had given the visitors a three-goal lead before the break. United now occupy the last promotion play off position.

HISTORY The club originally competed in the West Lancashire League. They joined the North West Counties Football League Division Two for the 1991–92 season. In their first two seasons in the league the club finished 15th out of 18 clubs. In the 1993–94 season they finished third and were promoted to Division One, where they spent the next five seasons, but struggled each season, their highest league position coming in the 1995–96 season when they finished 11th out of 22 clubs. They finished bottom in the 1998–99 season and were relegated back to Division Two. In 2008, the divisions of the North West Counties League were renamed, so since 2008–09, Holker Old Boys find themselves back in Division One. The club’s best run in the FA Cup came in the 2004–05 season when they reached the second qualifying round, beating Hall Road Rangers in the pre-qualifying round and Silsden in the first qualifying round, before losing to Harrogate Town. Their game against F.C. United of Manchester in the 2005–06 season was held at Craven Park, the ground of Barrow Raiders Rugby league team to accommodate the fans that FC United brought with them. The match attracted 2,300 fans, breaking the club’s record attendance. The club possess the FA Charter standard, and run a number of junior teams.

GROUND Holker Old Boys’ home ground is at Rakesmoor Lane, just across the road from Barrow Golf Club on the outskirts of the town. There is limited seating in the small stand which is situated behind one goal. Being close to the sea the ground often suffers from strong winds which blow end to end down the ground, which has a small clubhouse which serves food and drink. The largest attendance for a game held there is 1,240, against Barrow in a cup match in 1995.
