SANDBACH UNITED – CLUB HISTORY Sandbach United Football Club was established in 2004 when Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers joined forces in their quest to improve the football facilities in Sandbach. Hence the R & A on the club badge. In January 2004, the membership of Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers voted in favour of amalgamation, with the aim of playing as a single club from the start of the 2004/5 season. Sandbach Albion was formerly known as Hays Junior Football Club and was founded in 1994, playing on the pitches of what was then Albion Chemicals. As health and safety issues became more prevalent in the 90’s, they left that site and for 5 years the senior home ground was at Sandbach Cricket Club. The younger sides played their games at junior schools throughout Sandbach. Sandbach Ramblers Youth Football Club was formed in 1995 to provide access to schoolboy football for the youth of Sandbach. Of course there had been a Ramblers team in the town before, Sandbach Ramblers were initially formed over 100 years ago, playing in the Cheshire County League and winning the Cheshire FA Senior Cup in 1914, before folding in 1975 reforming in 1979 and disbanding in the late 1980s.

SANDBACH UNITED – CLUB HISTORY In 2006 Sandbach United formed the adult team, which initially competed in the Crewe and District League before moving to the Staffordshire Senior League First Division and then being promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008/9 season. In 2011, the club was awarded grants by the Football Foundation and the local council of over £2 million to build a 3G pitch and 9 grass pitches, together with changing rooms and an education facility. The Sandbach Community Football Centre was opened early in the 2011/12 season. United switched to the Cheshire League in 2011 and won promotion to the Premier Division for the 2013/14 season before moving to The Hallmark Security League for the 2016/17 season. The clubs first season in the Hallmark Security League was better than they could have dreamt, winning the Macron Club of the Month in December, finishing in 6th place and the playoffs in Division 1 as well as being Reusch First Division Challenge Cup Runners up. Their goal keeper, Ryan Moss also collected two Reusch Keeper of the Month awards. In another first for the club, the 2017/18 season saw the club enter The FA Vase with a home 2nd Qualifying Round fixture against AFC Emley. The club has over 600 players and 40+ teams that operate from its Hind Heath Road base. United have teams playing in the Mid-Cheshire Youth League, and the Cheshire Girls League among others, and the age range covers adults and veterans teams right down to Soccer School for Reception and Year 1 children.

New Mills – CLUB HISTORY New Mills AFC, based in the High Peak of Derbyshire, have continually been at the forefront of organised football in the area. The Club's home ground is regarded as one of the most picturesque in non-league football. Football has been played in New Mills since 1886. The Club first played in friendlies before joining The North Cheshire League and The Manchester League. The Club moved to their present home of Church Lane in 1922. After moving to The Cheshire League in 1974 the club struggled and by the early 1980's were forced to cease football activity. Local side Birch Vale and Thornsett FC were looking for a ground and soon they adopted the name of New Mills AFC and started progression via The Lancashire and Cheshire League and the Manchester League. New Mills re-joined The North West Counties League in 2004 (they were founding members in 1982). Under Tony Hancock the club enjoyed success, beginning with the NWCFL Second Division Trophy in 2007. The following season they won Division Two by ten points. 2008/09 saw them win the League Challenge Cup, but after a twenty one game winning run, promotion to The Evo-Stik League was denied by a last day defeat at AFC Fylde. 2009/10 saw The Millers finish runners-up to Newcastle Town who gained promotion to the Evo-Stik League after which Hancock resigned, former Mossley boss Ally Pickering taking over as caretaker. Pickering became full-time manager and 2010/11 proved third time lucky as New Mills achieved promotion to The Evo-Stik League. The debut season in The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League was tough after being placed in Division One South, but the eventual position of ninth represented a respectable finish.

New Mills – CLUB HISTORY After a mixed start to the 2012/13 campaign, Pickering was replaced by assistant Roy Soule, who guided them to a play-off position, losing to Trafford in the play-off semi-final. 2013/14 was a difficult season with a wet winter producing the inevitable March/April fixture backlog. The Club eventually ended in a mid-table position in Division One North. 2014/2015 proved tough for New Mills AFC. They finished in a relegation position but gained a reprieve. Soule resigned in the summer and was replaced by Keith Briggs who left the Club three weeks later replaced by his Assistant Andy Fearn. Fearn remained for seven games before resigning, being replaced by Garry Brown and assistant Paul Williams. Despite their previous success at Wythenshawe Town, they were unable to make the step up and the club mustered just three draws in the season gaining national media attention. The club found themselves back in the North West Counties League for the 2016/17 season but despite improvement Brown resigned early in the season, with Williams taking over. Williams was unsuccessful in making the step up from Assistant Manager and he was to leave the club before Christmas in 2016. Calum Sykes was appointed the new Manager and clinched the signings of a number of players that he had worked with at previous clubs giving the club solid foundations to build from moving forwards. Home form was good at the end of 2016/17 but away form remained disappointing and the club were relegated. Callum Sykes resigned in mid-November of the 2017/18 season to be replaced his assistants, Gareth Cross and Nick Dowse and the club finished in 14th position.

FA VASE: Sandbach United 5 Athersley Recreation 1

Jack Beresford reports

Five-star Sandbach performance sees them progress into the next round. Sandbach took on Athersley Recreation from the Northern Counties Eastern League in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase. In the league Athersley hadn’t won all season and their poor form continued as Sandbach beat them 51, a brace from both James Kirby and Kieran Garner-Knapper and a late goal from Ryan Allcock meant that United progress into the next round. Sandbach manager Andy Hockenhull said that his side were due a win after losing both of the last two games 1-0 despite having all the possession and plenty of shots on goal. However, his sides first half performance was much like the previous two games. The home side started brightly and after 15 minutes they had their first real chance of the game when a cross from deep by James Kirby was met by Harry Cain at the back post, but his shot was well saved by the keeper. Goalkeeper Ryan Moss became the first ever Sandbach player to make 100 senior appearances for the first team, and he was called into action in the 28th minute when a free kick from Lee Garside was well saved down low to Moss’ left. Hockenhull said he tweaked the formation from last week as he looked to be more attacking and wanted to take the game to the opposition, but United were struggling to find that final ball that would split the defence, Billy Buckley took matters into his own as he struck a somewhat speculative shot from 30 yards that almost caught the keeper off guard however he did well to claw the ball out for a corner as Buckley’s shot looked destined for the top corner. As far as first halves go it wasn’t the best, Sandbach had been on top but couldn’t put the ball into the back of the net. Hockenhull was again left frustrated at half time at his sides inability to put the ball in the back of the net. The second half looked like a totally different game than the first as both teams came out of the blocks looking to break the

deadlock, Athersley had the first chance of the first half when in the 54th minute a goalmouth scramble saw the ball fall to Garside whose shot was well saved by Moss in the Sandbach goal. Hockenhull had nothing but praise for Kieran Garner-Knapper after the game as he said that his blistering pace caused the away side issues, in the 64th minute Garner-Knapper used his pace to full affect ,as he was played through on goal he raced onto the ball, and drove towards the goal after muscling the Athersley defenders out of his way he then poked the ball under the onrushing keeper and into the back of the net putting Sandbach into the lead and breaking his duck for the season. Sandbach would’ve liked to push on after scoring their first and looked to add more goals to put the game beyond doubt, however five minutes after scoring the away side equalised when the ball was played towards the right by-line by Declan Dawson as he looked to find the run of Jack Briscoe who looked to have fouled Lane, but despite the Sandbach appeals the referee waved play on allowing Briscoe to cross the ball, the cross was cleared as far as Athersley captain Ryan White who thundered the ball off the crossbar and into net. Sandbach were furious that a foul wasn’t given but the referee and his officials took no notice of their appeals and allowed to stand.

The Sandbach manager was disappointed that his side let Athersley back into the game as his side had been in control of the game from the first whistle. Hockenhull was however delighted at the character that his side showed to retake the lead seven minutes later. Garner-Knapper was set free down the right-hand side, he used his blistering pace to get to by-line and send in a low cross that was met by last season’s top scorer James Kirby who does what he does best and slotted the ball home at the near post giving Sandbach the lead once again. Hockenhull described midfielder Ryan Allcock as a quality player in his post-

match interview and last seasons player of year showed the 104 people in attendance just why he is so highly regarded by his manager. In the 77th minute he won the ball back in midfield and played a beautifully weighted pass in behind the defence to Garner-Knapper who again used his pace to full effect as he beat the keeper to the ball, before taking it around him and slotting into the empty net making the scores 3-1 to Sandbach and putting his side in a good position as they looked to progress into the next round. United were running riot and they added a fourth with four minutes of the game to go when yet again the pace of Kieran Garner-Knapper worked a treat for the home side when a long ball down the right looked easy for the keeper to clear, but Garner-Knapper beat the keeper to the ball leaving him in no-mans land. Knapper was then able to cross the ball, it fell to Cain at the back post who just had the defender on the line to beat, Cain took his time before firing the ball straight at the defender on the line, but luckily for him Kirby was on hand to fire the ball into the net, sparing Cain’s blushes and make the scores 4-1 to the home side. Hockenhull was again left frustrated at half time at his sides inability toAthersley heads had dropped and Sandbach were looking to use the last five minutes of the game to gain some confidence after finding goals hard to come by in recent weeks, they had time to add a fifth goal when Kirby latched onto a long ball from midfield, Kirby who had space and time down the right was able to pick out Cain on the edge of the box, who then flicked the ball past the defender and round the corner to Ryan Allcock who placed the ball into the bottom corner topping off a superb second half display for his side. Sandbach were excellent in the second half, every attack they had seemed to lead to a goal. Scoring five will be a massive confidence booster for the forwards who manager Andy Hockenhull described as being frustrating in recent weeks. The win for Sandbach sets up a second qualifying round tie against Atherton LR.

SANDBACH UNITED 1ST TEAM WOULD LIKE TO THANK

MATCH REPORT: Sandbach United 1 Chester 5

Jack Beresford Reports

As the first team qualified for the FA Cup for the first time in 44 years, it allowed the under 17s to feature in the FA Youth Cup. It was the first ever time that the town of Sandbach had been represented in the competition. Sandbach were drawn to play Chester City, the tie was supposed to take place at the Deva Stadium, Chester’s home ground, however due to flooding and maintenance issues the ground was deemed unfit for use, meaning that the tie was to be played at Hind Heath Road. The Chester side featured a handful of players who had featured in their first team, so United were in for a real test. After just 5 minutes Sandbach were up against it when Chester forward Lloyd Marsh-Hughes latched onto a long ball from defence and then drove into the box before slicing his shot high and wide from the right side of the box The first real attempt fell to the away side, as Dan Atton pulled down MarshHughes in the box the referee pointed to the spot to give a penalty to Chester. It as a stonewall penalty and the referee was in no doubt but to point to the spot. Chester number 11 Leighton Kendrik stepped up from 12 yards and fired the ball towards the bottom left corner, however Matt Ellson got down to palm the ball away from the goal. It was a superb save from the Sandbach keeper who had to be at his best to prevent the ball from finding the bottom corner.

MATCH REPORT: Sandbach United 1 Chester 5

Jack Beresford Reports

Sandbach had been superb in the first half, they had matched their opposition, however with 10 minutes of the half-left Chester took the lead when Lois Hayes headed the ball into the goal from a corner from the right. The ball looked to just creep over the line and despite the Sandbach protests the officials agreed that the goal would stand. It was a cruel way to go a goal down, the home side had been superb in the first half, but they were let down by poor marking from a set play. Sandbach pushed for a goal before half time, despite having no clear-cut chances they still looked on par with Chester. With five minutes to go before half time Henry Southern danced his way into the box before playing the ball to Lucas Baker who was on the left side of the box, Baker then shifted the ball onto his left foot before firing the ball across the keeper and into the back of the net,

putting his team back on level terms. It was a superb strike from the winger who had looked a threat all game. Sandbach just had to hold on for a further five minutes to go into the break all square, however in the third minute of stoppage time Chester regained the lead when Cian Noble played a defence splitting pass that found MarshHughes who ran towards goal before placing his shot past the keeper who will be disappointed that he didn’t prevent the ball from going in.

MATCH REPORT: Sandbach United 1 Chester 5

Jack Beresford Reports

At half time the score was 2-1 to the away side, however Sandbach had looked very good and the score line didn’t reflect the game. Chester began the second half very brightly, after 3 minutes a cross from the right by Marsh-Hughes was headed in to his own goal by Garen Hughes who didn’t really know much about it. That third goal for Chester put the game beyond doubt, Sandbach battled to get back into the game but fitness showed, the full time Chester scholars began to dominate the game as the Sandbach school boys started to tire. 10 minutes after the restart Leighton Kendrik beat the offside tap and found Nolan who shot from around 10 yards but the keeper saved well at his near right post. With half an hour to go Chester added another when another dangerous corner from the right seemed to hit a defender and then nestle into the back of the net. It was another own goal conceded by the home side who had been very unfortunate. Harry Molenyeux’s deliveries had been a real threat to Sandbach and he rounded off the scoring as his in swinging corner from the right missed everyone and went all the way in. Sandbach heads had dropped, at 5-1 down the game was out of sight however they can take pride in the way they played against a very good Chester side. The game finally ended, as the home side trudged off to a superb reception from the spectators who had stayed until the end, knowing that they have played in the FA Youth Cup, a competition that only the best young side in the country take part in.
