SANDBACH UNITED – CLUB HISTORY Sandbach United Football Club was established in 2004 when Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers joined forces in their quest to improve the football facilities in Sandbach. Hence the R & A on the club badge. In January 2004, the membership of Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers voted in favour of amalgamation, with the aim of playing as a single club from the start of the 2004/5 season. Sandbach Albion was formerly known as Hays Junior Football Club and was founded in 1994, playing on the pitches of what was then Albion Chemicals. As health and safety issues became more prevalent in the 90’s, they left that site and for 5 years the senior home ground was at Sandbach Cricket Club. The younger sides played their games at junior schools throughout Sandbach. Sandbach Ramblers Youth Football Club was formed in 1995 to provide access to schoolboy football for the youth of Sandbach. Of course there had been a Ramblers team in the town before, Sandbach Ramblers were initially formed over 100 years ago, playing in the Cheshire County League and winning the Cheshire FA Senior Cup in 1914, before folding in 1975 reforming in 1979 and disbanding in the late 1980s.

SANDBACH UNITED – CLUB HISTORY In 2006 Sandbach United formed the adult team, which initially competed in the Crewe and District League before moving to the Staffordshire Senior League First Division and then being promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008/9 season. In 2011, the club was awarded grants by the Football Foundation and the local council of over £2 million to build a 3G pitch and 9 grass pitches, together with changing rooms and an education facility. The Sandbach Community Football Centre was opened early in the 2011/12 season. United switched to the Cheshire League in 2011 and won promotion to the Premier Division for the 2013/14 season before moving to The Hallmark Security League for the 2016/17 season. The clubs first season in the Hallmark Security League was better than they could have dreamt, winning the Macron Club of the Month in December, finishing in 6th place and the playoffs in Division 1 as well as being Reusch First Division Challenge Cup Runners up. Their goal keeper, Ryan Moss also collected two Reusch Keeper of the Month awards. In another first for the club, the 2017/18 season saw the club enter The FA Vase with a home 2nd Qualifying Round fixture against AFC Emley. The club has over 600 players and 40+ teams that operate from its Hind Heath Road base. United have teams playing in the Mid-Cheshire Youth League, and the Cheshire Girls League among others, and the age range covers adults and veterans teams right down to Soccer School for Reception and Year 1 children.

Abbey Hulton United – CLUB HISTORY Abbey Hulton United Football Club was formed 70 years ago in 1947, making it one of the oldest formed clubs still playing Saturday football in North Staffordshire. During its very early days the club played on Council land in the Abbey Hulton area. It continued to use this facility for the first 15 years, despite the fact that the changing facilities were more than a mile away from the actual pitch. In 1962 it was decided that the team should move to the Parks facility at Bucknall Park which was complete with its own changing rooms and showers adjacent to the pitch. What a luxury. The team continued to use Bucknall Park for another 23 years, until 1985. During the period from 1947 to 1985 the team played in many local junior leagues such as: • The Longton League • Fenton and District League • Burslem and Tunstall League • Newcastle and District League They graced all the above leagues with great distinction. Over the years the club became more financially stable and grew in ambition. Finally in 1985 they acquired a piece of land at Birches Head Road on which it was able to obtain a 99 year lease. This is the clubs current address. Immediately, a clubhouse was built containing a bar and changing rooms for both teams and officials. At the same time an outside 5 a-side football facility was built, complete with floodlights. Having moved to this new facility the club opted to join the North Staffs Alliance League. It completed in this league before seeking election to one of the top leagues in the area, The Staffs County League (North), in 1987. The team played in this league and finally had a momentous season in 1997-1998 by winning the league, the cup and also the fair play award all in one season. Having achieved this feat the club applied to join what is the top junior league in North Staffordshire, the Staffordshire County Senior League.

FA VASE: Atherton LR 0

Jack Beresford reports

Sandbach United 5 Sandbach continued their good run of form as they beat Atherton LR 4-0 in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase thanks to goals from Ryan Allcock, Kieran Garner-Knapper, Billy Buckley and James Kirby. After putting six past Cheadle in the league on Wednesday night Sandbach returned to cup action as they faced first division North outfit Atherton LR. Sandbach came into the game in good form after scoring 18 goals in their last 3 games. United’s opponents on the other hand were looking to pick up their first win of the season. Sandbach started the game brightly as Ryan Allcock played the ball in behind the defence allowing Kirby have a free run on goal, as he got in on goal the keeper seemed to slip and lose his footing, Kirby tried to take advantage of this so he shot early from outside the box but the keeper managed to recover well and he was able to make the save. The game had a scrappy start and conditions weren’t great, players seemed to be losing their footing as they tried to get used to the state of the pitch. 25 minutes in the home side should have taken the lead when a defence splitting pass from Nathan Randall found Gary Burnett who beat the offside trap and raced towards goal, as he got into the box he took a shot at goal that was well saved by Moss at his near right post. Ten minutes later Sandbach finally took the lead when Harry Cain did well to find Adam Clayton on the by-line who pulled the ball back to Ryan Allcock who then opened up his body and curled the in his shot off the far right post from the left side of the box, it was a superb way to open scoring from a man who has been so influential for United all season.

Sandbach United 5 At 1-0 up Sandbach pushed for more goals as they looked to have a comfortable lead going into the half time break and with three minutes of the half to go they almost doubled their lead when a throw in from the left by Clayton found its way to Garner-Knapper whose shot from the left of the box was weak and easy for the keeper to save. With half time approaching Sandbach doubled their lead as Ryan Allcock received the ball on the edge of the box and with his back to goal, Allcock then acrobatically flicked the ball over his head to Garner-Knapper who ran onto Allcock’s flick and poked the ball past the keeper from the left side of the box, it was another superb Sandbach goal and it gave them a solid lead as they went into the break. At half time Sandbach had a well deserved 2-0 lead, however the next goal would be vital in the context of the game. One minute into the second half Atherton almost halved the deficit as a corner from the right was met by Daniel Ashburner whose header went just wide of the far-left post. Four minutes into the second half Sandbach added a third goal when clearance from the defence looked as though it was going to roll into the keeper arms, however the ball seemed to hold up in the pitch allowing Billy Buckley to beat the keeper to the ball and then take it around him before slotting the ball home from well outside the box. It was a poor decision from the Atherton keeper, whose error has allowed Sandbach to put the game beyond them so early into the second half. Four minutes later Kirby’s frustrating day in front of goal continued as he was played through by Matty Pearson but his shot from outside the box was easy for the keeper.

Jack Beresford reports

Sandbach United 5 In the 55th minute Sandbach came agonisingly close to adding a fourth when a good 1-2 on the edge of the box between Allcock and Buckley saw Allcock go through on goal but his shot from the right of the box struck the far-left post before bouncing clear of danger. Five minutes later Clayton was in the thick of things again when he won a penalty after being bought down in the box. Kirby stepped up and after scoring five in the previous game, he was favourite to score but his penalty was well saved by the keeper who guessed the same way as Kirby as he dove his right side. Despite being in control of the game Sandbach were dealt a real blow as ever reliable goalkeeper Ryan Moss who had been nursing a groin injury for the majority of the second half decided that he couldn’t carry on. Manager Andy Hockenhull hadn’t named any goalkeepers on the bench so that meant that Jake Chadwick had to play the last 10 minutes of the game between the sticks. In the 85th minute Kirby finally found the back of the net as a deep cross from the left by Buckley was met by Kirby at the back post who superbly volleyed back across the keeper and into the far-left corner. It was a goal that well worth the wait, an excellent finish from Sandbach’s top scorer. The game ended 4-0 to Sandbach who have now scored 22 goals in their last 4 outings, an outstanding stat that they can be very proud of, defensively they have been solid too conceding just once in that time. Sandbach will travel to Hallmark Security League Premier Division opposition in the next round as they have been drawn to play Squires Gate.

SANDBACH UNITED 1ST TEAM WOULD LIKE TO THANK

MATCH REPORT: Cheadle Town 0 Sandbach United 7

Jack Beresford Reports

Seventh heaven for United

United travelled to Park Road looking to make it three wins out of three after beating New Mills 6-1 on Saturday and then Athersley Rec 5-1 the week before. The game was brief break from the heavy cup schedule that Sandbach have, they already have 4 games in hand on some other teams in their league which could prove pivotal in the long run. The game had started at a very high tempo and if the first five minutes of the game were anything to go by then the spectators were in for a real treat on a bitterly cold Wednesday night. In the 13th minute Sandbach took the lead as a low cross from the right from Jordan Davies was met by Ryan Allcock who saw his shot saved from close range, but the keeper couldn’t hold the ball, as the Cheadle players tried to clear the ball away, Sandbach were battling to get that elusive touch that would see the ball hit the net, the ball eventually fell to Ryan Allcock who was on hand to poke the ball into the empty net and give Sandbach the early lead. The early goal for Sandbach helped to put them in control as they looked to double their lead. 7 minutes later they did just that as Matty Pearson won the ball in the opposition half before getting to the by-line and then sending in a in a low cross which was met by James Kirby at the near post who managed to knee the ball past the keeper, doubling United’s lead. Sandbach had started the game excellently, every time they went forward they looked like they were going to score, the front three of Davies, Cain and Kirby looked ruthless, as they did on Saturday. With 15 minutes to go in the half, Sandbach added a third as a Buckley corner from the right was headed away as far as Cain who turned and then curled in a cross from outside the box, the ball fell kindly for Kirby who exquisitely curled the ball from the left

Cheadle Town 0 Sandbach United 7 of the box and into bottom right corner of the goal, grabbing his second of the game. Everything Kirby touched was turning to gold and after a poor start to the season he will be delighted to be back doing what he does best and that’s finding the back of the net.

With 13 minutes of the first half remaining there was still time for Kirby to complete his 17 minute hat-trick as a low cross from Jordan Davies fell to Kirby on the penalty spot, his initial shot was well blocked by the defender but the ball fell back to Kirby who was on hand to lash the ball home and complete what was an outstanding first half display from Sandbach. Manager Andy Hockenhull would have been delighted at half time as the game was all but over and his team could relax in the second half. It was the home side who started the second half the brighter of the two sides as Rhys Clooney was played through on goal but his shot from just outside the box curled the wrong side of the far-left post. It was a wake-up call for United who couldn’t switch off just yet as any lapse in concentration could lead to a Cheadle goal. Five minutes after half time Clooney came close again as he drove down the right before cutting in towards goal, as he got into the box he took aim at the Sandbach goal, but his shot was well saved by Sandbach keeper Ryan Moss who was looking to make it back-to-back clean sheets for the first time this season.

Cheadle Town 0 Sandbach United 7 The home side were starting to control the game and they looked the stronger of the two sides at the start of this second half, however in the 59th minute their momentum was halted when they had a man sent off. Thomas Russell was alleged to stamp on Sandbach winger Harry Cain whilst he was down injured this earned him a booking, this stamp lead a small brawl which saw both Cheadle’s Liam Delaney and Sandbach’s Jake Chadwick pick up bookings.

In the aftermath of the brawl Russell continued to argue with the referee which then saw him pick up another booking which then lead to the referee producing the red card. It was a shame for Cheadle as they looked good in this second period as they looked to get back into the game. But the 10-men Cheadle side continued to fight and with 25 minutes left they came close once more, Rhys Webb did brilliantly well to work his way into the box and make space for a shot, but his shot from the left of the box flashed across the face of the goal before going out for a goal kick. Although the result was pretty much in the bag Sandbach were looking to add more goals to bolster their goal difference and they thought they had added a fifth goal when a Buckley corner from the right was met by Kris Stockton who saw his initial header saved, the ball then ballooned into the air, Stockton used his height to beat the defender to the rebound and head towards goal, the keeper seemed to claw they ball from behind the goal line, however the Sandbach appeals for a goal quickly waved away by the officials.

Cheadle Town 0 Sandbach United 7

With just under 20 minutes to go Sandbach were still looking to add more goals and in the 71st minute they added a fifth goal when Kirby’s high pressure allowed him to steal the ball off the right back before racing towards goal, as he made his way into the box the keeper game charging off his line but before he could get anywhere near the striker, Kirby poked the ball past the keeper and into the empty net, getting his fourth of the game and Sandbach’s fifth. It really was just one of those days for Kirby, everything he touched seemed to lead to a goal. After missing Saturdays game Kieran Garner-Knapper was brought on in the second half and after a good 1-2 with Kirby in the middle of the park, the winger was then allowed to use his blistering pace to race in on goal, however unfortunately his close range shot was well saved by the keeper.
