SANDBACH UNITED – CLUB HISTORY Sandbach United Football Club was established in 2004 when Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers joined forces in their quest to improve the football facilities in Sandbach. Hence the R & A on the club badge. In January 2004, the membership of Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers voted in favour of amalgamation, with the aim of playing as a single club from the start of the 2004/5 season. Sandbach Albion was formerly known as Hays Junior Football Club and was founded in 1994, playing on the pitches of what was then Albion Chemicals. As health and safety issues became more prevalent in the 90’s, they left that site and for 5 years the senior home ground was at Sandbach Cricket Club. The younger sides played their games at junior schools throughout Sandbach. Sandbach Ramblers Youth Football Club was formed in 1995 to provide access to schoolboy football for the youth of Sandbach. Of course there had been a Ramblers team in the town before, Sandbach Ramblers were initially formed over 100 years ago, playing in the Cheshire County League and winning the Cheshire FA Senior Cup in 1914, before folding in 1975 reforming in 1979 and disbanding in the late 1980s.

SANDBACH UNITED – CLUB HISTORY In 2006 Sandbach United formed the adult team, which initially competed in the Crewe and District League before moving to the Staffordshire Senior League First Division and then being promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008/9 season. In 2011, the club was awarded grants by the Football Foundation and the local council of over £2 million to build a 3G pitch and 9 grass pitches, together with changing rooms and an education facility. The Sandbach Community Football Centre was opened early in the 2011/12 season. United switched to the Cheshire League in 2011 and won promotion to the Premier Division for the 2013/14 season before moving to The Hallmark Security League for the 2016/17 season. The clubs first season in the Hallmark Security League was better than they could have dreamt, winning the Macron Club of the Month in December, finishing in 6th place and the playoffs in Division 1 as well as being Reusch First Division Challenge Cup Runners up. Their goal keeper, Ryan Moss also collected two Reusch Keeper of the Month awards. In another first for the club, the 2017/18 season saw the club enter The FA Vase with a home 2nd Qualifying Round fixture against AFC Emley. The club has over 600 players and 40+ teams that operate from its Hind Heath Road base. United have teams playing in the Mid-Cheshire Youth League, and the Cheshire Girls League among others, and the age range covers adults and veterans teams right down to Soccer School for Reception and Year 1 children.

Cheadle Town – CLUB HISTORY Cheadle Town was formed in 1961 as Grasmere Rovers playing in the Manchester & District Sunday Football League in their Under 16s Division. As the team developed the Under-21 Championship was won in 1968, followed by the Premier Division title two years later. In 1972 the club made the significant decision to play their football on Saturdays and joined the Manchester Football League. Success on the playing field coincided with the arrival of Albert Pike as manager in 1978. In Albert’s first, full season he led the team to a terrific double of First Division Champions and Manchester Amateur Cup Winners; this was the prelude to even more success as the club won both the Manchester & Derbyshire F.A. Cups. Grasmere Rovers moved into their own ground at Park Road Stadium in 1982 and, a year later, changed their name to Cheadle Town when they also joined the North West Counties Football League. Membership has mainly been in the Second Division but in 1996 the club was promoted to the First Division. Sadly, relegation back to the second tier occurred in 2001, a position they still occupy in the now-named First Division. Park Road Stadium itself has a fine history with, initially, Cheadle Rovers being the owners. On their demise Manchester City used it as their training ground. Portugal, along with Eusebio trained there during the 1966 World Cup and, in 1993, the world-famous Brazilian player, Jairzinho, hosted a Soccer School for Cheadle Town. Floodlights were installed in 1995 and Manchester United provided the opposition for the official ‘switch-on’ when, on a memorable evening, Town beat United’s youngsters, 3-2 in front of almost 2,000 fans. The biggest gate to watch Cheadle Town on domestic soil came ten years later against FC United of Manchester. Due to the huge interest in the game Town officials moved the fixture to Stockport County’s Edgeley Park, and they were rewarded with a bumper 3,227 attendance that witnessed a pulsating 3-3 draw. The club is famous for its legendry foreign tours, having played 96 games in 30 different countries in front of over 312,000 fans and scoring 111 goals. Playing under their tour name, Manchester AFC, they have played against SEVEN national sides and once played in front of 65,000 people in Mexico City’s worldfamous Aztec Stadium. Their epic journeys have taken them just over 210,000 miles all over the world.

Cheadle Town – CLUB HISTORY Alfredo di Stefano, Ronnie Biggs, Brazilian superstar Jairzinho and Rajiv Ghandi have all met the touring side as exotic locations such as Cannes, Acapulco, Rio de Janeiro, the Bahamas and Phuket have mixed with non-exotic places like Dar es Salaam, Haiti and Guangzhou in China. The club celebrated its 50th birthday in 2011 and, if the next 50 years are anything like the first, then there is a lot of excitement to come. It was at this time that Cheadle Town made the decision to change their kit colours to green which commemorated the colours worn by Grasmere Rover 50 years ago. Cheadle Town are an FA Charter Standard Community Club acknowledging the most advanced level of club development and football provision. At the turn of the year in 2018 a new future for the club was heralded when it became part of the Little Sports Group, owned by ex-Cheadle Town player Craig Brennan. In May 2018 we were awarded a £50,000 improvement bursary from Buildbase that will enable us to realise our vision to improve the matchday experience and develop footballing facilities for the surrounding area.

Vs

Last time we met

Last time the two sides was on a cold Wednesday night back in September in Cheadle and it was a game to forget for Cheadle as Sandbach ran out 7-0 winners. The game was dominated by Sandbach from start to finish they took the lead after just 13 minutes when Ryan Allcock bundled the ball into the net following a goalmouth scramble. Sandbach doubled their lead seven minutes later when James Kirby bagged his first of the game after poking the ball home at the near post from a cross from the right. Ten minutes before half time Kirby scored his second of the game when he fired into the bottom right corner from the right side of the box. Two minutes later, Kirby had his hat-trick when he fired home from close range. At 4-0 the home side had a mountain to climb and with 30 minutes left their task got a lot harder when they had Thomas Russell sent off for a second bookable offence. In the 71 minute it was five for Sandbach as Kirby poked the ball past the on-rushing keeper. Harry Cain added a sixth goal with 10 minutes left as he latched onto Kirby’s pass and fired into the empty net. In the 86th minute Kirby rounded off the scoring by sliding the ball past the GK.

Sandbach United 3 Before the game both sets of players, officials and supporters impeccably observed a minute silence for the late Ashton Athletic secretary ‘Taffy’ Roberts who sadly passed away in the week. Sandbach were looking to end the month on a high as they looked to win the team of the month award for September after winning 3 out of 4 games and 23 goals. It only took Sandbach ten minutes to get their 2th goal of the month and their first in this game. A freekick from the left by league debutant Dean Twigg was met at the back post by top scorer James Kirby who beat the keeper to the ball and was able to head the ball into the empty net. It was a great start for Sandbach as they looked to control the game from the first whistle. The first half was very scrappy, the game lacked that bit of quality as both teams struggled to keep possession. With ten minutes left of the first half Kieran Garner-Knapper used his pace to race past the defenders and drive towards goal, as got into the box the keeper came rushing out, GarnerKnapper tried to poke the ball under Williams in the Wythenshawe net, but he managed to get a vital touch on the ball that turned around the wring side of the right post. Neither side had taken control of the game and as the referee blew his whistle for half time the game was still very much in the balance. Five minutes after the restart and Sandbach doubled their lead after a goalmouth scramble the ball fell to the feet of Twigg who was able to shift the ball to Garner-Knapper on the left of box, the winger then placed the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal making the scores 2-0 and giving the away side a comfortable lead with 40 minutes to go.

Last time out: Wythenshawe Town 3

Jack Beresford reports

Sandbach United 2 Three minutes later Garner-Knapper was again able to use his blistering pace .to drive towards goal, as he beared down on goal the defenders applied the pressure, so he squared it to Buckley on the left od the box who fired a low shot towards the bottom left corner of the goal but unfortunately for him it went the wrong side of the post and crashed into side netting. Sandbach had dominated the early stages of the second half and they were in control, with 15 minutes to go they added a third when Kirby applied pressure on the defence and was able to win the ball back in the opposition half, he then raced towards goal before unselfishly squaring the ball to substitute Josh Lane who fell over the ball, but thankfully he and the ball ended up in the back of net. I can safely say that the goal will not be a contender for goal of the season! With 15 minutes left Sandbach were well in control and they looked odds on for the win but with seven minutes left Wythenshawe substitute Michael Taylor curled a freekick from 25 yards out into the top left corner, giving his side a glimmer of hope. With 15 minutes left Sandbach were well in control and they looked odds on for the win but with seven minutes left Wythenshawe substitute . Michael Taylor curled a freekick from 25 yards out into the top left corner, giving his side a glimmer of hope. Sandbach had suddenly found themselves hanging on for the 3 points in a crazy turn of events. The referee indicated 5 added minutes which would have worried manager Andy Hockenhull, however in the 91st minute the home sides just was made a lot harder as Dan Hudson picked up his second booking of the game after a blatant push on Jake Chadwick. Sandbach were bombarded with set pieces but they managed to stay strong and hold on for a massive three points against a very good side.

First Division South Team of the Month Sandbach United have won the award for the First Division South September team of the month after winning 5 out of their 6 games and scoring 26 goals in all competitions. They started the month as they meant to go on after putting 5 past premier division side Athersley Rec in the FA Vase thanks to a brace from both Kieran Garner Knapper and James Kirby. A week later they face New Mills in the first round of the first division cup, two more goals for Kirby helped his side to a 6-0 victory. Four days later they faced Cheadle Town in the league game of the month. After scoring four in the first two games of September, Kirby added five more as Sandbach ran out 7-0 winners, it was a record breaking performance from Sandbach as they recorded their biggest ever competitive win, Kirby also broke the record of most goals scored in a game.

Sandbach were in free scoring form, and they continues this destructive form as they put four past Atherton LR in another resounding cup win for United. It was just in front of goal where Sandbach were clinical, defensively they had been solid too, conceding just the one goal in the first four games on September. Sandbach did however lose to Abbey Hulton in which was a strange game considering their recent performances, but full credit must go to Abbey Hulton who were solid in their 2-1 victory. United ended the month on a high as they beat mid table Wythenshawe Town away from home 3-2, goals from Kirby, Garner-Knapper and Lane helped Sandbach to the victory. So overall it was a good month, winning all but one of their games. Scoring 26 goals, James Kirby grabbing 11 of these. And they only conceded 5 goals. A superb month all round.
