SANDBACH UNITED – CLUB HISTORY Sandbach United Football Club was established in 2004 when Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers joined forces in their quest to improve the football facilities in Sandbach. Hence the R & A on the club badge. In January 2004, the membership of Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers voted in favour of amalgamation, with the aim of playing as a single club from the start of the 2004/5 season. Sandbach Albion was formerly known as Hays Junior Football Club and was founded in 1994, playing on the pitches of what was then Albion Chemicals. As health and safety issues became more prevalent in the 90’s, they left that site and for 5 years the senior home ground was at Sandbach Cricket Club. The younger sides played their games at junior schools throughout Sandbach. Sandbach Ramblers Youth Football Club was formed in 1995 to provide access to schoolboy football for the youth of Sandbach. Of course there had been a Ramblers team in the town before, Sandbach Ramblers were initially formed over 100 years ago, playing in the Cheshire County League and winning the Cheshire FA Senior Cup in 1914, before folding in 1975 reforming in 1979 and disbanding in the late 1980s.

SANDBACH UNITED – CLUB HISTORY In 2006 Sandbach United formed the adult team, which initially competed in the Crewe and District League before moving to the Staffordshire Senior League First Division and then being promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008/9 season. In 2011, the club was awarded grants by the Football Foundation and the local council of over £2 million to build a 3G pitch and 9 grass pitches, together with changing rooms and an education facility. The Sandbach Community Football Centre was opened early in the 2011/12 season. United switched to the Cheshire League in 2011 and won promotion to the Premier Division for the 2013/14 season before moving to The Hallmark Security League for the 2016/17 season. The clubs first season in the Hallmark Security League was better than they could have dreamt, winning the Macron Club of the Month in December, finishing in 6th place and the playoffs in Division 1 as well as being Reusch First Division Challenge Cup Runners up. Their goal keeper, Ryan Moss also collected two Reusch Keeper of the Month awards. In another first for the club, the 2017/18 season saw the club enter The FA Vase with a home 2nd Qualifying Round fixture against AFC Emley. The club has over 600 players and 40+ teams that operate from its Hind Heath Road base. United have teams playing in the Mid-Cheshire Youth League, and the Cheshire Girls League among others, and the age range covers adults and veterans teams right down to Soccer School for Reception and Year 1 children.

Rylands – CLUB HISTORY Rylands Recreation Club were formed as a local works (wire manufacturer) team in 1911. In their early days they played in the Liverpool County Combination before joining the Warrington & District League where they enjoyed considerable success. Establishing themselves throughout the 1950’s they won successive Premier Division Championships from 1955 to 1959. Added to the league in 1958 was Warrington Districts’ prestigious Guardian Cup and to complete a hat-trick of trophies the club also lifted the Liverpool Junior Cup. Steady progress throughout the 60’s prompted the club to look for new mountains to climb and in 1969 the club joined a relatively new league, The Mid-Cheshire League. The step up in standard saw a barren trophy cabinet for a number of years, but in 1979 they won their first trophy by defeating Barnton in the League Cup final, which led to a successful period at the club. Rylands won the Mid-Cheshire League championship in 1981 and were again champions in 1984 when Joe Rudge’s side lost only once all season. 1983/84 was also the season that Rylands thought they were on their way to Wembley when they entered the last 32 of the FA Vase with wins over Blackpool Mechanics, Maghull, Atherton LR and Rainworth MV. But it was against the latter that saw an appeal against the length of the pitch and when it was found to be just over a yard short, a replay was ordered which Rainworth won 1-0. A barren run of years, a time when the club resigned the Reserves from the Mid-Cheshire League, was ended when a newly formed youth team lifted the Warrington & District Youth Cup with an extra time win over local rivals Warrington Town. This provided the springboard for senior honours in 1993. The Reserves were reinstated and went on to win the Division Two League Cup with an extra time win over Knutsford. Prior to the start of the 1996/97 season the club formed a link with a local junior club – Beechfield – and these youth sides continued to bring trophies in to the club. Warrington & District Youth Cup in 1997, Wigan & District League Runners-up in 1998 and in 1999 both the Warrington & District League and Cup. These young players rejuvenated the club and in 1999-00 the first team reached the Mid-Cheshire League Cup Final only to lose out to Knutsford in a penalty shoot-out after being reduced to nine men with twenty minutes of extra time left. Season 2001/02 would see a surprise end to the campaign. An undefeated run of nine games saw the first team snatch runners-up spot on goal difference

Rylands – CLUB HISTORY In 2003, Rylands again reached a Mid-Cheshire Cup final – The Presidents Cup – but lost out to Styal. The club then fell on hard times and in 2008 amalgamated with Crosfields to form a new club, Crosfields / Rylands FC. Under the new name both the first and reserve teams reached Mid-Cheshire League Cup Finals, unfortunately losing in both and their anguish would continue when the firsts lost out to Woodley in 2010 and the reserves to Pilkington the season after. Prior to the start of the 2012/13 season, the club resumed the name of Rylands FC with the backing of a new sponsor, Triple S Sports & Entertainment Group – led by former Rylands player Paul Stretford. The first team went on to win the Warrington Guardian Cup in 2015, whilst also coming Mid-Cheshire League Cup runners up in 2013, 2014 and 2018. Competent performance on-the-pitch was supported with year-on-year investment off-the-pitch, that saw a complete revamp of the football pitch at Rylands Recreation Club, leading to promotion to the new North West Counties Division One South for the 2018/19 season – the first season in its 107-year history that the club will compete at Step 6 of the football pyramid.

Jack Beresford Sandbach United 2 reports Wythenshawe Amateurs 2 How they lined up: SUFC Moss, Pearson, Ledwards, Cooper, O’Riordan, Rowntree, Allcock, Buckley, Erdmann, Davies, Garner-Knapper. WAFC Blain, Worth, Deman, Howard, Gresty, Lillie, Fallon, Aikenhead, Burton, Egan, Brady Sandbach’s first game of 2019 saw them play host to league leaders Wythenshawe Amateurs in would be a very tough game for Andy Hockenhull’s men. Sandbach knew that they were in for a tough test and they didn’t exactly get off to the best starts when after seven minutes the away side broke the deadlock as a Jordan Burton freekick taken from the middle of the half was headed home by an unmarked Joel Aikenhead who had plenty of time to direct his shot past Moss and into the back of the net. Sandbach now had a mountain to climb if they were to make it back to back wins. Two minutes later they came close to equalising as Ryan Allcock found Jordan Davies on the left flank, he looked to cut inside and bend a shot towards the far right corner, but his shot was straight at the keeper from the left side of the box. Despite being a goal down Sandbach had dominated the game so far and they came close once more as Jordan Davies ran onto a through ball from Kieran Garner-Knapper, Davies was in on goal and as he got into the box shot with his right foot, but it was again, straight at the keeper.

After dominating the game, Sandbach were finally rewarded on the mark. Jordan Erdmann found himself with the ball at his feet and his back to goal, he laid the ball off to Buckley on the edge of the area who showed fast feet as he got past his man before placing the ball into the bottom right corner from just outside the box. It was a superb finish who bagged his second goal in as many games for United. After taking the lead so early on Wythenshawe would have been disappointed that they couldn’t built on their early lead, however they came inches away from regaining the lead in the 35th minute as Carl Brady’s cross from the left was met by Dan Egan who looked to head the ball back across goal and into the top left corner but his header hit the top of the bar and went behind for a goal kick. As the game approached half time Sandbach had one more opportunity to take the lead. In the 44th minute Jordan Davies was pulled down by a Wythenshawe defender and the referee showed no hesitation when pointing to the spot. Jordan Davies dusted himself down and stepped to take the penalty, but both the ball and the keeper went towards the bottom right corner and Martin Blain easily saved the Welshman’s weak penalty to keep the scores level. At the break Sandbach were rueing their missed chances, especially the penalty.

However, they were dominating the game against a top of the league side so there are plenty of positives to take. The second half took a while to get going but on the hour mark Davies was again bought down In the box and the referee pointed to the spot for the second time in the game. This time it was Ryan Allcock who stepped up for Sandbach. However, his penalty was poor as he dragged it wide of the left post. After the game Allcock said “I was going to blast it down the middle, but as I ran up to the ball the keeper didn’t move, so I changed my mind.

Hockenhull would have been fuming that his side has squandered two brilliant chances to take the lead. Sandbach had dominated the game and the away side were struggling to deal with the fast feet and skill of winger Jordan Davies who again caused havoc with 15 minutes to go as he got to the right by-line and sent in a low cross for substitute Aidan Haughton who fired the ball over from just three yards out with all the goal to aim at.

Jordan Davies was looking to make up for an earlier penalty miss and he produced bit of magic in the 77th minute when he cut in from right and fired a volley from around 30 yards out that was spectacularly tipped onto the bar by the keeper and the somehow cleared away! It would have for sure won goal of the season, but the save was incredible.

With seven minutes to go the game was still well in the balance and the next goal would be vital. Sandbach would a freekick down the right and substitute Josh Lane curled it into the box and Matty Pearson got up highest and headed into the ball into the bottom left corner, past the keeper.

It was a superb header from the fullback who doesn’t score many, but when he does, they mean a lot. As the clock struck 90 minutes the referee added on 5 additional minutes and then in the 97th minute we were for some reason still playing and the away side won a corner and sent everyone up. Sandbach have looked vulnerable from set plays recently, so it was hearts in mouths time for everyone. As the corner was floated in towards the back post it was met by a Wythenshawe player but blocked by a defender. The ball eventually fell to substitute Alan Dolman whose shot squeezed its way past the defence and found its way into the bottom left corner, sparking scenes of jubilation from the Wythenshawe players, supporters and management staff whilst Sandbach were made to wonder why the referee played so many more additional minutes. However, Sandbach were superb all game and they will know that they should have won, 2 missed penalties cost them at the ned of the day but there were plenty more positives than negatives to take away from the performance.

Last time out: Congleton Town 6 Sandbach United 1

Jack Beresford reports

How they lined up: CTFC Ellison, Stephens, Peters, Ryder, Morris, Griffith, Hasler-Cregg, Warburton, Henderson, Cope, Burey. SUFC Moss, Pearson, Ledwards, Cooper, O’Riordan, Rowntree, Allcock, Buckley, Kirby, Davies, Garner-Knapper Sandbach were bolstered by the return of top scorer James who was put back into the side in order to get some game time as he has found this hard to find since he signed for Atherton Collieries. His return to the side got off to the worst possible start as his side conceded after just three minutes. A long ball down the right caused as a lapse in communication between both Elliot Ledwards and Ryan Moss, as neither of them went for the ball it allowed Congleton winger Bevan Burey to get to the ball first and shoot from outside the box but Moss was able to get a hand on it and unfortunately for him parry it into the path of Saul Henderson who placed the ball into them empty net from just inside the box. Manager Andy Hockenhull would have been furious at the manor of the goal conceded, the only saving grace for Sandbach was that there was still 87 minutes of the game left for his side to get back into the game. Billy Buckley almost pulled a goal back for United as he picked up the ball on the edge of the box and the shifted the ball onto his left foot before shooting just wide of the top left corner. Congleton had looked good after getting the first goal of the game and the came close to doubling their lead when the dangerous Henderson picked up the ball on the left of the box, he looked to find space for by racing the right side of the box before shooting with his right foot from the angle, unluckily for him it went the wrong side of the post and crashed into the side netting

On the stroke of half time Sandbach were still very much in the game, however as Danny Cope drove into the box his heels were clipped by Matty Pearson and the referee showed no hesitation when it came to pointing to the spot. Dean Warbuton stepped up for the Bears and he confidently rolled the ball into the bottom left corner, sending Moss the wrong way. At half time the score was 2-0 to Congleton, the penalty on the stroke of half time was a massive blow for Sandbach who had it all to do in the second half. Hockenhull would have been hoping that his side could grab an early goal to put pressure on the home side, however the polar opposite of this happened as Congleton extended their lead in the 57th minute as a deep cross found Burey at the back post and his header back across set up Danny Cope who acrobatically bicycle kicked the ball over Moss ad into the net, putting the game beyond doubt for his side. Eight minutes later it was 4-0 Burey’s scuffed shot from the left found its way to the feet of centre half Thomas Morris who was unmarked and six yards out, meaning that he easily fired the ball past a helpless Ryan Moss in the Sandbach goal. Bevan Burey was running the show for the home side and he grabbed a deserved goal in the 67th minute as Will Hasler-Cregg drove towards goal before laying the ball off for Burey who fired home from five yards out. The game was over but Sandbach had to ensure that they didn’t lose their heads, signs of frustration were being to show as late tackles and misplaced passes were starting to creep into Sandbach’s game. With 15 minutes to go veteran Steve Foster rounded off the scoring for the home side as he rocketed the ball into the top right corner from 35 yards out, leaving Moss helpless and completing a rout for his side. In fairness to Sandbach, despite being six goals down they kept going and managed to grab a consolation goal in the 82nd minute when substitute Harry Cain whipped a cross from the left that was met at the back post by Jordan Davies who fired the ball into the top right corner, giving Sandbach fans hope of a famous comeback. However, this didn’t happen, and the game ended 6-1 to Congleton. The early goal seemed to set the tone for the home side and then the penalty on the stroke of half time killed Sandbach off. A two goal margin against a side of Congleton’s quality is always hard to come back from, and ultimately that showed.
