CANCER

Quick to respond, usually not being one for long letters. They prefer things to be told or written rather hastily and spontaneously. Furthermore, they often find themselves very often regretting about that sharp and not so discreet comment they wrote to their penpal about them having gained 10 lbs, while their ‘me, me and only ME’ attitude and low boredom threshold do not make them the most lovable people you can ever write to. They do even get easily bored, but if you start talking about vigorous activities you have all their attention! However, their quick wit is unmistakably stunning and dazzling, rather sharp with an overflow of quick ideas exuding from their scripts. If you want to catch their interest, maybe you should decorate your envelopes with any kind of motorcycle riding (well, maybe that James Dean stuff ain’t a bad idea at all)!

A rather steady penpal, unless their planets suggest otherwise (that’s a long story!) They possess quite the common sense and are steady in their way of writing and communicating. They may also decorate their letters with any earthy stuff, such as stamps from leaves or recycled paper, or you can catch their eye with that stuff. You’d rather not get into any kind of debate with them, since they will remain too stubborn to their ideas. The hardest part of dealing with a Mercury in Taurus penpal can be if you decide to break it off with them. For them, things have to be the same and they can be too resistant to change.

Long, long chatty letters and God bless! They love to write, write, write a lot, have a low boredom threshold and are intelligent, with their humour being of the wordplay or ‘double entendre’ variety. However, you may have to tolerate their tendency for gossip and curiosity, which on the bad side can turn into indiscretion. They will also use both sides of arguments, mostly to trick others. Yet they can be the favorite penpals one can have due to their love for communication and expecting from you to talk, since they hate silence especially when it comes from the other person! They can use lots of stuff on their letters, especially if they include stickers with words, initials or quotes.

(Author’s note: born with this position alert!) Those folks talk and write straight from the heart without hesitating to pour out their emotions, even if they feel totally negative (translation: if they are grumpy, they can release their bitching out on you!). They are sentimental and very happy when they talk about their past or their hometown. Their humor is rather subliminal yet they do give a flavor to anything they say. Emotionally they can be really open books, especially if they trust you, and every word of theirs does ooze emotion, while they do absorb your aura and emotions. If you are sad, they are doubly sad. Anything nostalgic of childhood or older eras, watery or cute (for example, a mommy cat that cuddles with her kittens) can color the Mercury in Cancer’s emotions or catch their eye.

They are better at acting than writing. Sunny and bright, they are ardent in their expressions and dramatic. Even their way of writing demonstrates theatricality, as if they talk to you straight away! They will do everything to catch your eye even with the use of stickers, capitals and glittery stuff and you may imagine them using their hands out trying to show before you everything they say. They can even write monologues longer than Hamlet’s part and promise a good time! They usually are very generous with their compliments, too. They may decorate their letters with anything flashy. If you are to get them interested, be rather generous in your decorating and creative! A poem (preferably of the Romantic era) can also work wonders.

Very tactful, tasteful and charming with their words. Even when they get angry, they do their best to keep things civilized. Either by indecisiveness or out of fear of hurting the other part, they prefer dealing with debates by using the perspectives of either side than finally reaching a single approach and stick with it. However, when this trait is used at its best, they do have a really sound and objective judgment and do manage to maintain a middle ground, but at its worst this can be seen as lack of compassion, diplomatic trickery, or ‘going with the wind’ and being too easily influenced by others. They love talking about relationships and anything that concerns people apart from themselves, especially their significant others and they will always ask how you’re doing out of sincere interest. They may love decorating their letters with anything elegant, subtle and beautiful and if you are to catch their interest, use your artistic skills in your letters, although they probably would like to see your own Mercurian characteristics on yours!

Analytical and practical with much humor and wit, precise in their expression and disliking too much sentimentality. However, they can be too critical of themselves and others, while their perfectionism can make them hard to live with. They can be the best pals when their native speakers of the language you want to improve in, since they can not only speak & write very well and clearly, but also they will pinpoint your mistakes (and, man, they will always be right!). You don’t have to use extravaganza to have your Mercury in Virgo penpal’s attention, for them simplicity does work best. Even if you do decorate your stuff, make always sure it won’t be sloppy. Of course, they always believe that less is more, even in penpalling.

Pisces Those who have Mercury in Pisces share with the Mercury in Aquarius folks the eccentricity, but they are more spiritual, emotional, sentimental, and idealistic to the point of escapism. They can be rather naïve or absent-minded and know well how to escape from the mundane reality by seeking spirituality and their poetic imagination. Even though they may not have poetic or artistic abilities, yet they do have a more ethereal sense of life and are prone to seeing spirits, which may be considered outrageous and abstract by less enlightened souls. They communicate on a more subliminal level, they totally hate mundane stuff, figures and data, since they bore them too easily (after all, they don’t exist in the supernatural world, do they?) and if they are close to the sea, wonders can be done to their dreamy psyche. Yoga, meditation and ESP are where they may reign, along with the occult. You don’t have to do much stuff to impress them, just let it be straight from the heart and spirit and they will be very generous to make stuff only for you with their own hands. Yeah, talking about any kind of art and sharing visions together as penpals can help you climb mountains with them.

Ambitious and pragmatic, they hate any bouts of sentimentalism or sensationalism. Their cynicism abounds, but they can make fun of themselves so easily that they break their seemingly boring veil of seriousness. They hate superficial chatter, since they do try too hard to lighten up. However, you can give them a good time if you can see they are in the mood to do so. You don’t have to do much to impress them, just show them you mean business, you have quite the plans behind you, find the common ground you both share and use it on your letters. They will be happy to reciprocate it. (Notice how short this passage is and you get my point!)

Aquarius Oh the eccentrics! They talk about the future, they think of the future and they even wake up with the words ‘future’ and ‘revolution’ in mind. Since they are much fonder of modern technology, they will probably prefer email to the postal service anytime. Even if they choose traditional mail, they will do it out of eccentricity since they think they are being revolutionary at the time when even my grandma uses email! If they are too involved with technology, they will write in a nerdy style, even with excessive use of netspeak. However, they can reform the words and use them with new meanings to communicate their thoughts and depict their idealism. Of course they love demonstrations and talking about politics and you’ll read or hear from the most outrageous to the most extraordinary thoughts coming out of them. They hate sentimentality, are rather aloof, orthologists and detached in their way of thinking, yet they do stand up for their friends and that includes their penpals. For them teamwork and friendship are their basic drives, since they believe that only jointly can people change the world. They are also very open to new friends and can be the most indiscriminate folks one can ever run into. They will also get busy with the strangest things, such as the occult and anything that would be considered marginal. To catch their attention, just be creative in your letters, make anything unusual, use images of Che Guevara and any revolutionary stuff, mix it with hippies and maybe the zodiac, technology, whatever unusual they like. The end result is yours to imagine. I’m sure that then they will show you back their individuality in their own eccentric way, too, and if you ask them to collaborate on a project, you will have their undying interest!

Capricorn

it ?

SCORPIO You cannot hide from them. They are natural detectives and if you lie they will usually ‘detect’ it right away. They probably love dabbling with the occult, talking about supernatural stuff, conspiracy theories, anything deep (and not superficial, since they mostly hate gossip) that makes their radar remain alert. As penpals, you will have to go a long way before they let you in their thoughts and motives, as they do have trust issues. Even though they won’t tell you much about themselves, they manage to unveil information just by your talking without you even knowing it. However, if you have Mercury in Scorpio yourself, you will either make a very good detective duo or you will eternally trick each other into revealing yourselves and that’s a tough pill to take. If you want to attract the interest of your Mercury in Scorpio penpal, just confide yourselves in them and decorate your letters with any symbols that contain dark meanings, or just use your own creative style and they will know more about you than you will ever imagine!

Very philosophical and abstract that love talking to all kinds of people. However, they do get bored of too much talking or having to think of too mundane things. They are mentally active, but want to go beyond the everyday facts and broaden their perspective! They do get too easily bored, are honest and blatant enough to fearlessly tell you so. Changeable and rather impulsive, don’t you ever fear what happened what happened to them if they suddenly haven’t sent you a letter for a while! It will be either because they ‘just needed a break’ or they just started a journey for that Buddhist monastery! They are the best people to talk about religion or Platonism with and are energetic idealists who may get too absent-minded if you become too nitpicky and serious (for them, that is!), since they are blunt and brutally straightforward. In rare cases, they can be too stuck to the doctrine they believe in, but usually they are much more flexible and welcoming. They do lift your spirits, since they are totally enthusiastic and optimistic. You can attract their interest by using a mini size that famous Aristotle & Plato painting in your letter or depicting sports, especially if they concern running and they will reward you with their undivided attention!

A short note: As you see in these tables, the “13th sign”, Ophiuchus, is not included. That happens because it’s the heliocentric zodiac, which is based on the seasons, being used, rather than the sidereal one, which depicts the Sun’s movement through the constellations.

li k e

This table indicates the beginning and ending dates of each Mercury position each year. I used the European day-month format, instead of the US month-day one, just to make things a bit easier. Mercury stays in each position for approximately 15 days. However, Mercury can spend a shorter or much longer time to each sign due to its retrograde motion and can even return to the former sign for a while. For those born in the beginning and ending date of each position, the exact birth time is recommended to sort their position out. For the fellow penpals born earlier than 1970, I am preparing a new table soon, don’t worry!
