St, Sauveur sous le périsule de la grande Comédie., c. 1798 Image 310 x 490 mm, Plate 422 x 504 mm, Sheet 430 x 618 mm unmounted One of five tableaus prints for St. Sauveur’s Tableaux des Principaux Peuples de l’Europe, de l’Asie, de l’Afrique, de l’Amerique, et les Decouvertes des Captaines Cooke. Other plates included Europe, Asia, Africa and the Pacific. In previous works Sauver’s illustrations were individual full length portraits of people in their national or native dress. In this work he creats a tableaux of peoples with detailed landscape backgrounds and a decorative boarder including native animals. 24 numbered costumes of peoples of the Americas arranged in three sections. including people from the native tribes from: Mexico, Peru, California, Arcadie, United States of America, Canada, Eskimaux, Terra del Feugo, Patagonia, Greenland, Paraquay, Chili, Guyane, Florida, Panaman, Brazil, Louisinna, greater and lesser Antillies, Amazon, New Mexico, and Quito. In the decorative boarder Sauveur includes monkies, aramdillos, snales, frogs, beavers, squirriels, parrots, deer, and bears and plants such as pineapples. Condition: Several small repaired tears in the edges not affect the image. Small repair to seated lady from the Antilles, not noticeable from the front. Centrefold crease as issued. [33275] £3,000

St. Augus de Floride Copper engraving Mallet, Allain Manesson c.1686 Image 147 x 109 mm, Sheet 190 x 145 mm unmounted A view of St. Augustine, Florida from Mallet’s Description de l’Univers (First published in 1683). Alain Manesson Mallet (1630–1706) was a French cartographer and engineer. He started his career as a soldier in the army of Louis XIV, became a Sergeant-Major in the artillery and an Inspector of Fortifications. He also served under the King of Portugal, before returning to France and his appointment to the court of Louis XIV. His military engineering and mathematical background led to his position teaching mathematics at court. Mallet’s major publications were Description de L’Univers (1683) in five volumes, and Les Travaux de Mars ou l’Art de la Guerre (1684) in three volumes. [33088] £70

14. Mexico.& Cusco regni Peru in novo orbe caput Copper engraved with hand colour Braun, George and Franz Hogenberg Antwerp, c. 1600 269 x 471 mm unmounted From part one of Civitates Orbis Terrarum and is the only view of the New World to be illustrated in the series. Tenochtitlan (Mexico City) and Cusco are shown at the time of the their conquest by the Spanish. Native figures are shown in the foreground, possibly including Atahualpha, the Inca king being held aloft on a covered throne in the view of Cusco. Georg Braun (1541-1622) was a topo-geographer. From 1572 to 1617 he edited the Civitates Orbis Terrarum, a work which contained 546 prospects, bird’s-eye views, and maps of cities from all around the world. Copper engraving with original hand colouring Anonymous A Paris chez Basset rue St. Jacques [n.d. c. 1780] Image 266 x 410 mm, Sheet 306 x 430 mm unmounted A vue d’optique showing an idealized landing on the shores of Cayanne or French Guiana. The plate mentions that the drawing for the print was executed by a Spanish Officer in 1762 and was apparently designed to attract new settlers to the colony. Melaer after Abraham van Diepenbeeck Antwerp, c. 1671 Image 278 x 178 mm, Plate >298 x 185 mm, Sheet 305 x 191 mm unmounted An uncommon print from Cornelius Hazart’s Kerckelycke historie vande gheheel wereldt (Universal Church History)...., published in four voloumns in Antwerp from 1667 to 1671. This print depicts the death of two Spanish missionaries. In the foreground is a depiction of the death of Friar Diego Ortiz. Born in Spain, Ortiz was a missionary to the Incas in Cuzco, Peru until his death in 1571. He was accused of poisining the Inca and then tortured to death. In the background, Vincente de Valverdel is being beaten to death by natives in an event that occured some 30 years prior to the death of Friar Diego. Some reports say that he was killed for trying to convert the indians to Christianity and others say he had molten gold poured down his throat as punishment for the greed of the Spanish. Abraham van Diepenbeeck (1596-Sept 1675) was a Dutch painter of the Flemish school. He was classicaly educated and was a pupil and assistant of Peter Paul Rubens. Condition: Text missing from inscription on lower right. It appears that the print was print printed crooked. Ink stain in image. [33091] £200

Caricatures
21. La Vache a lait, represente le Commerce de la Grande-Bretagne Copper engraving Anonymous n.d. c. 1777 Image 170 x 260 mm, Sheet 207 x 272 mm unmounted A rare French caricature about the American Revolution that depicts the British’s ineffective in control of the situation in the Americas and the people who stand to profit format the situation. A cow represents the commerce of Great Britain and a figure who represents the American Congress is cutting off the horns of the cow thereby removing its strength and defensive abilities. A Dutch man is milking the cow and shows how the Dutch were profiting from the situation. Behind him stand a happy Frenchman and Spanish man who are also stand to benefit format he conflict in the Americas, the Frenchman has a larger bowl than the Spanish. In the background the British warship The Eagle commanded by Admiral Howe is off the shores of Philadelphia. Two men sit at a table in Philadelphia one is sleeping and one is looking at the British flagship. In the foreground the British Lion lays down sleeping and does not feel the mastiff walking on his back. Next to the lion a man representing Britain with a face of despair is pleading for the Lion to get up and protect British property and interests. Condition: Large repaired tear in left hand side of image. Some ink stains upper right and a stain lower right. Horizontal and vertical folds and overall creasing. [33280] £150

Jacques Grasset de Saint Sauveur (1757-1810) was a writer and diplomat. Born in Montreal, Canada he went to Paris in 1764 and studied with the Jesuits at St. Barbara. He eventually became a diplomat. He was vice-consul to Hungary and then Cairo. From 1784 until his death he devoted his time to writing and produced twenty books. [33092] ÂŁ180
25. The Hon..ble Isreal Putnam Esqr. Mezzotint Anonymous n.d.c. Sheet 347 x 254 mm, Image 312 x 248 mm unmounted A very rare portrait of Israel Putnam. Not in Chaloner Smith Israel Putnam (1718 – 1790) was an American army general and Freemason, known as “Old Put,” who fought with distinction at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. His reckless courage and fighting spirit were known far beyond Connecticut’s borders through the circulation of folk legends celebrating his exploits. Ex. Col.: Hon. 28. William Penn’s Treaty with the Indians, when he founded the province of Pensylvania in North America 1681. Copper engraving John Hall after Benjamin West Published, June 12th. 1775 by John Boydell Engraver in Cheapside London. Image 427 x 588 mm, Sheet 483 x 620 mm unmounted Benjamin West’s print depicts William Penn entering into peace treaty with Tamanend, a chief of the Lenape Turtle Clan. The historical moment ocurred in 1683, near the village of Shackamaxon, Pennsylvania, and signalled over a century of peace between the Delaware Indians and Penn’s successors. The figure of Penn stands centre left with his arms open; his entourage beside him. Two further men kneel, and offer gifts to the clan. The Indians are shown with feather headdresses, partly shaved heads, beaded armbands and headbands, and large earrings. They lean forward, eager to see what is being offerred to them. A large elm tree shades the group, and the incomplete buildings of Shackamaxon can be seen in the background. Benjamin West’s oil painting was completed in 1772, three years before Boydell commissioned John Hall to reverse the image in a copper plate engraving. The print was copied in a smaller size by Robert Delaunay and published as ‘Guillaume Penn Traite avec les Indiens’, but it is Hall’s work which is the most collectable. Inscription Content: Lettered with title and dedication to the Proprietaries of the province of Pennsylvania by the publisher, and statement that the painting had belonged to the late Thomas Penn. Also includes production detail: ‘Benj: West pinxit’, ‘John Hall sculpsit.’ [31000] £1,000

London, 1757 272 x 362 mm unmounted An interesting and uncommon map of New England and Canada at the beginning of the French and Indian War. Showing the area from Quebec to Boston. Indian territories are labelled including information about tribal relations such as..... Relations between the French and English are also noted by such remarks as . The identiďŹ cation of Eastern Massachusetts as a separate entity from New Hampshire and Massachusetts is unusual for the period. Comes with accompanying text from the Universal Magazine which describes the map. Richard William Seale (1703-1762) was an English engraver, cartographer and publisher. Image 475 x 571 mm, Plate 487 x 586 mm, Sheet 518 x 605 mm mounted This map shows the area from Arcadia in Canada and the Great Lakes down the eastern seaboard through to Florida, west to New Mexico (naming Taos and Santa Fe) and finally extending south through Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama and Venezuela showing the Caribbean Islands. This map accurately depicts English settlements on the East Coast and confined by the Appalachian Mountains. For the first time, this map accurately depicts the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River. There is a large decorative cartouche on the right depicting explorers with a chest of goods interacting with Native Americans and a gold mine behind. To the left ships are depicted. Homann based this map on De L’Isle’s landmark map of Mexico and Florida, first issued in 1703, the maps also includes information based on the explorations of La Salle, Bienville, d’Iberville, Le Sueur, and Lederer, and the 17th century English explorer.
