A young woman appears surprised when stumbling across a young military officer in full regimentals wearing a gorget and fringed sash, with a toupet-wig, lying on the grass admiring his reflection in a pool. 9. The Pantheon Macaroni. Mezzotint Anonymous 1 February 1835 by Ackermann & Co. Image 137 x 113 mm, Plate 150 x 113 mm, Sheet 205 x 138 mm framed A scene inside the Pantheon in Spa Fields, which opened in 1770, two years before the Pantheon in Oxford Street. It closed in 1774 due to the owner’s bankruptcy. In May 1772, a writer in the St. James’s Chronicle, professed to have been shocked at the request from more than one lady, ‘Pray, Sir, will you treat me with a dish of tea’. In 1773 the Macaroni and Theatrical Magazine referred to the Oxford Road Pantheon as ‘The Nobility’s’, and the Spa Fields Pantheon as ‘The Mobility’s’. Her hair is dressed with pearls; and she is wearing pearl earrings, a ruff, a cross hanging from her neck, and a black veil over her head and shoulders. 15. The Triple Plea. Mezzotint with hand colouring after John Collet London: Publish’d as the Act directs, 15 May 1780, by Carington Bowles, No.69 St. Pauls Ch. Yard. Image 135 x 110 mm, Plate 150 x 112 mm Mounted Inscription beneath image reads: Let Mankind live in peace and love, / The Lawyers tricks they need not prove, / Let them forbear excess and riot, / They need not feed on Doctor’s diet. / Let them attend what God does teach, / They need not care what Parsons preach. / But if Men Fools and Knaves will be - They’ll be Ass ridden by All Three. A smaller version of the mezzotint ‘The Triple Plea’ (B.M. Satires 3761). A satirical print of a cleryman, lawyer and doctor in a room, debating which of them has superiority in causing more harm to mankind. The clergyman stands on the left, facing the others, who sit at a table with their papers and books. Pictures on the wall show harpies feasting on a man, and a ‘Wolf in Sheeps Clothing’. 16. French Man in London. Mezzotint after John Collett [London Printed for R. Sayer Printseller No. 53 Fleet Street, as the Act directs 10 June 1790] Image 139 x 112 mm, Sheet 147 x 116 mm unmounted In the cobbled street, a French man - directed, facing and looking to the right - throws his hands in the air in amazement at the butcher who stands to the right. Directed, facing and looking left, the butcher clenches his fists in a fighting attitude. Behind, a dog steals meat from the butcher’s cart. 17. The Antiquerers Mezzotint after John van Eyck c. 1780 Image and sheet 88 x 119 mm. unmounted A group of nine men, including two clerics, sit around a table whilst examining a damaged ‘piss pot’. This particular copy has been trimmed into the image, with the bottom half missing. In the complete state, however, a dog is seen at the bottom of the image urinating on a pile of books entitled ‘Webb on Cobwebs’ and ‘Ducarell on Dild’. The complete print features an inscription reading: The Connoisseurs will rummage Greece & Rome / Yet wondrous Rarities are found at Home; / A modern Piss pot here delights, you see; / Hail glorious Study of Antiquity! / Done in match & Tinder from a very Curious Drawing of John Van Eyk in the Collection of Dr. Piss Breeches. [29th September, 1794] Image 137 x 113 mm, Plate 149 x 114 mm, Sheet 163 x 119 mm unmounted The companion print to An Aristocrat, also after Dighton (BM Satires 9054). The pair contrast the loyal Englishman and the ‘treacherous’ Frenchman. Within an oval, a fierce and ragged Jacobin, directed left, facing and looking to front; wearing a cap and ragged clothes, a smoking lamp in his left hand, a dagger in his right on which is inscribed ‘FRATERNITY’; a sheaf of papers under the left arm on which ‘Assasination’, ‘Equality’ and ‘Paine’s rights of Man’ are inscribed. 20. A Guinea-Pig. Mezzotint with original hand colouring after Robert Dighton Printed for & Sold by Bowles & Carver, No.69 St Paul’s Church Yard, London. [Published as the Act Directs, 25 July, 1795] Image 137 x 111 mm, Sheet 150 x 114 mm. unmounted Portrait of a man, believed to be W. Gillman (fl. 1795), Officer in the Stamp Office, in an oval, directed, facing and looking left in profile. He is fashionably dressed in a wig, hat and high collar, with a cane tucked beneath his left arm. His right arm is raised to reveal a certificate held in the right hand, inscribed with ‘STAMP OFFICE CERTIFICATE. J Whitehead Queer St Lodger [...]’. The certificate references a tax that was introduced in June 1795 for a licence to wear hair powder which cost a guinea. The young man has his hat tilted to show his expensive coiffure. Portraits British Nobility 21. Maria Countess of Coventry. Mezzotint after Jean Liotard [c.1750] Image 137 x 113 mm, Sheet 147 x 113 mm unmounted Maria, Countess of Coventry (1733 - 1760), was one of the two Gunning sisters; both famous beauties who made splendid marriages. They were the daughters of John Gunning of Ireland. Maria became first wife of George William Coventry, 6th Earl of Coventry. Her sister became Elizabeth Campbell, Duchess of Hamilton and Argyll. Artists 25. [Giuseppe Filippo Liberati (Joseph) Marchi] Mezzotint A. Wilson after Sir Joshua Reynolds c.1780 Image 133 x 113 mm, Plate 152 x 115 mm, Sheet 164 x 129 mm unmounted Giuseppe Filippo Liberati (Joseph) Marchi (c.17351808) was a painter, engraver and assistant to Sir Joshua Reynolds. In 1752 he was brought by Reynolds from Rome, and was his chief studio assistant until 1792, apart from 1768-9 when he worked independently. Reynolds paid him a salary of £100 a year. 27. Miss Hoare. Mezzotint Charles Spooner after William Hoare Printed for Robt. Sayer in Fleet Street. [c.1750] Image 136 x 113 mm, Plate 152 x 115 mm, Sheet 215 x 140 mm unmounted Portrait of Mary Hoare (c.1725-1820), William Hoare’s daughter. Mary was a painter who married Henry Hoare of Stourhead in 1765. She imitated her father and painted history scenes in crayons. [c.1775] Image 127 x 114 mm, Plate 152 x 115 mm, Sheet 239 x 146 mm unmounted Full title reads: Henry Jenkins, (who lived to the Surprizing Age of 169 Years.) / Departed this Life Decr. 1670 at Ellerton upon Swale in Yorkshire, was 12 Yrs. old when ye Battle / of Flowden Field was fought in Septr. 1513. he lived 16 Yrs. longer than Old Parr, & was the oldest / Man born since the deluge in the last Century of his Life he was a Fisherman & frequent- / ly Swam in the Rivers after the Age of 100 years. He hath sworn in Chancery / & other Courts to above 140 Yrs. memory, was often at the Assizes at York where generally went on foot. Henry Jenkins was a supercentenarian. He claimed to have been born in 1500, although parish registers were not required to be maintained until 1538. He lived in Ellerton upon Swale, Scorton, North Yorkshire, and claimed to have been butler to Lord Coniers, of Hornby Castle. He later became a fisherman and ended his life begging for alms. Chancery Court records show that in 1667 he stated on oath that he was aged “one hundreth fifty and seaven or theirabouts”. When asked by the judge which notable battle he remembered, he named Flodden Field, of 1513 and claimed to have carried arrows to the English archers. Born in Hartlepool, he was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, and was ordained as a deacon in 1736, and a priest in 1738. In 1741 he was appointed chaplain to the Lord Mayor of London, Daniel Lambert. In 1750 he was appointed assistant morning preacher at the fashionable church of St George, Hanover Square.
