25. La Ghirlandata after Dante Gabriel Rossetti Autotype The Autotype Company, London. c.1895 mounted From The Artist. Inscription beneath title reads: from a chalk Drawing by D.G.Rossetti. by permission of James Worral Esq. William Michael Rossetti, Dante Gabriel’s brother, described the original painting in his 1889 book Dante Gabriel Rossetti as Designer and Writer “The name La Ghirlandata may be translated ‘The Garlanded Lady,’ or ‘The Lady of the Wreath.’ The personage is represented singing, as she plays on a musical instrument; two youthful angels listen. The flowers which are prominent in the picture were intended by my brother for the poisonous monkshood: I believe he made a mistake, and depicted larkspur instead. I never heard him explain the underlying significance of this picture: I suppose he purposed to indicate, more or less, youth, beauty, and the faculty for art worthy of a celestial audience, all shadowed by mortal doom” The model for the main figure in this work was Alexa Wilding with May Morris sitting for the Angel heads. [39173] £90

26. The Golden Stairs after Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones Photogravure London: J. S. Virtue & Co. Limited. c. 1880. Image 280 x 117 mm, Sheet 324 x 248 mm From the Art Journal. The Art Journal originally opposed the emerging Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, with its articles attacking the the movement and its supporter, John Ruskin. When the editor, Samuel Carter Hall, retired in 1880, the Art Journal changed its stance. The meaning of Edward Burne-Jones ‘The Golden Stairs,’ 1880, has been the subject of much academic debate. Some believe that the trope of the golden stair derived from Dante, and alludes to the passage of time. Though the fact that those at the bottom of the stair appear no more elderly than those at the top, may act to dispel this view. Another stance states that the eighteen women are spirits in an enchanted dream. Walter Pater believed that Burne-Jones’ work was representative of the concept that ‘all the arts aspire to the condition of music’ which leant more credence by the fact that the figures hold instruments as they descend. The interest in investigating a mood rather than telling a story could be seen in other works of the time, most famously in Whistler’s ‘Nocturnes.’ This style anticipated the synesthesia of art and music by groups such as the Symbolists in the late nineteenth-century. Condition: Some minor foxing in the upper margin. [39162] £90

27. The Wine of Circe Jules Payrau after Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones Etching 1896 Image 136 x 208 mm, Plate 175 x 245, Sheet 225 x 302 mm mounted Circe is a mythological figure who features in Homer’s Odyssey. According to the epic poem, she resides over the island of Aeaea, and turns six members of Odysseus’ crew into pigs after offering them wine. In Burne-Jones’ work, Circe is bent over a vase of the broth as she measures out drops of the poisonous pharmakon kakon. Two black panthers prowl in the foreground as the three pentecosters of Odysseus and his men can be seen through the window. Dante Gabriel Rossetti, so inspired by the original painting, wrote a sonnet on the subject which appeared in his 1870 collection of poetry. From The Magazine of Art; an illustrated monthly British journal devoted to the visual arts, published from May 1878 to July 1904 in London and New York by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. The publication included reviews of exhibitions, articles about artists of all branches of the visual arts. 30. The Shadow of Death After William Holman Hunt Goupilgravure The Art Journal, London, H. Virtue & Co. Ltd. c.1895 Image 228 x 178 mm, Sheet 318 x 240 mm mounted From The Art Journal. Inscription beneath title reads: By Permission of Messrs T.Agnew & Sons. Holman Hunt worked on The Shadow of Death between the years of 1870-1873, during his second excursion to the Holy Land. A masterpiece of the Pre-Raphaelite canon, Holman Hunt’s depiction of Christ is arguably the greatest example of typological symbolism that any of the Brotherhood would produce. Championed by John Ruskin in the second volume of Modern Painters, typological symbolism was a method that combined heightened verisimilitude with elaborate iconography, and became central to the core of Pre-Raphaelite theory. [39171] £70

31. Love and Death Sir Frank Short after George Frederick Watts Mezzotint London, Published May 1st 1900 by Robert Dunthorne, 5 Virgo Street, London.W Image 575 x 270 mm, Plate 620 x 300 mm, Sheet 690 x 390 mm unmounted Signed in pencil by artist and engraver Throughout his career, George Frederick Watts produced numerous works upon the theme of Love and Death. This mezzotint was to become one of his most discussed images. The reason for this discussion most likely stemmed from Watts’ rejection of traditional memento mori imagery. In Watts’ allegorical work, the almost cherubic figure of Love on the right attempts to defend the house of Life. Death, on the left, advances calmly with bowed head. The massive crushed wings of Love, and the wild roses that are trampled under the feet of Death, intimate that Love’s stand might be in vain. According to contemporary account, the work was inspired by events in Watts’ life. In 1870, the Eighth Marquis of Lothian, a Christ Church scholar and good friend of Watts, died of a wasting disease at the age of thirty eight. Love’s resistance to Death did in fact prove to be futile. Condition: Printed on mock vellum paper. Printers crease to top left corner of sheet and light creases to sheet. [39176] £700

47. The Traytors Coat of Arms Etching Publish’d September the 16th 1746, According to Act of Parliament. Image 350 x 354 mm, Plate 357 x 363, Sheet 598 x 470 mm mounted An extremely rare, separately published broadside based upon an earlier woodcut featured in a book of the same title; The Traytors Coat of Arms, 1715. The original publication was a satire against James Charles Edward Stuart, the Old Pretender. Central to the image is a previous version of the French coat of arms, with the fleurs-de-lis replaced with frogs, and upturned to denote treason. Supporting the coat of arms are two figures; to the left is a priest, and to the right, a Scottish highlander. Wearing a habit, the priest holds a bloody penknife in his right hand. Upon his right shoulder is an open warming pan, revealing an image of an infant. The highlander, in appropriate attire, wears a bag upon his back filled with treasonable papers. The small figure upon the bag is explained to be the ‘Messenger of Intelligence’, again reflecting treason. In his left hand, the highlander holds a letter addressed to Cardinal Tencin. Resting upon the coat of arms is a crown embellished with five medals; the far left medal has the King of Spain upon it, the middle has Charles III, and the far right has the King of France. French inscription on ribbon towards bottom of image translates to ‘For the widows and orphans’. Three columns of text below image gives a detailed explanation, and features 15 lines of verse. 1746 marked the end of Jacobite rebellion. In April, the Battle of Culloden took place, which saw the defeat of Charles Edward Stuart, and ended any hope of a Stuart restoration. Condition: Laid to board. Repaired to left margin, slightly encroaching into image. Pressed vertical creasing through centre of image. Time toning and foxing to sheet. [39116] £5,000

61. [Piccadilly Circus] Henry Lambert Etching

First published in 1707, Beverell’s Les Delices de la Grande Bretagne et de L’Irlande was an eight volume series depicting a variety of views from across the United Kingdom, including those of royal palaces, stately homes, cathedrals, and naval towns. Two volumes were dedicated solely to Oxford and Cambridge, consisting of plates of the colleges that were copied and reduced directly from David Loggan’s Oxonia Illustrata of 1675. In total, Les Delices de la Grande Bretagne et de L’Irlande comprised of 241 engraved plates and maps after David Loggan, Johannes Kip, John Selzer, and others. Despite the publication ultimately being a collection of reduced copies of other engravers’ work, Les Delices de la Grande Bretagne et de L’Irlande is a fine example of early eighteenth-century printmaking.

162. Excavations, Nimroud Robert H. Clive Lithograph with hand colouring [London: Dickinson Bros, 1852] Image 240 x 338 mm, Sheet 315 x 415 mm unmounted One of a rare series of 24 illustrative lithographic plates after sketches by R.H. Clive, published as ‘Sketches between the Persian Gulf and Black Sea’ (1852). The view depicts the excavation of a pair of colossal lamassu sculptures in the Assyrian city of Nimrud. A group of workers sit and stand in the shadow of one of the sculptures, one man kneeling over a sieve or bucket. Excavations at Nimrud uncovered more than half a dozen pairs of such sculptures, and many are now represented in the collections of the world’s museums, including the British Museum, the Louvre, and the Met. The pair featured in Clive’s sketch are identified as those that once flanked the doorway of the shrine of Ninurta, a Sumerian god of warfare and hunting. The space to the left of the left-hand statue is panelled with a pair of distinctive ‘Mosul marble’ reliefs depicting winged genii. The city of Nimrud was established by the Assyrian

king, Shalmaneser I, during the 13th century BC. It came to prominence during the 9th century BC when the capital was moved from Assur by Ashurnasirpal II. Although it lost its role as imperial capital to Nineveh some 200 years later, it remained an important royal and ceremonial centre until the collapse of the Assyrian empire. This view of the excavations was taken by Clive in 1850, during the second archaeological project undertaken by Austen Henry Layard in the ancient city, and coincided with the arrival of two other colossi at the British Museum, after a difficult 18-month journey from Nimrud. Condition: Trimmed to image and laid to original publisher’s sheet with manuscript title and border. Light water staining to bottom edge of sheet, not affecting image. [38922] £220

163. Julamerk, Country of the Hekkari Robert H. Clive Lithograph with hand colouring [London: Dickinson Bros, 1852] Image 255 x 358 mm, Sheet 315 x 415 mm unmounted The view depicts the fortress and small hilltop settlement of Julamerk, in the mountainous Hakkari, a historic region encompassing parts of modern day Van Province, Turkey and Dohuk province, Iraq. The fort of Julamerk is depicted high on a rocky outcrop in the middle of a valley in the Cilo-Sat, a sub-range of the Taurus mountains. A group of travellers with their horse rest in the shade of a sparse copse of trees, while another traveller with a rucksack and walking stick approaches them along the mountain track. Because of the difficult terrain, little was known

of the region until the 18th century, and the arrival of European travellers. Although nominally under the control of the Ottoman Empire, the region was in effect controlled by local Kurdish and Assyrian tribal groups. During the 19th century, the region saw a number of bloody conflicts as various Kurdish leaders fought against Assyrian, Ottoman, and other Kurdish groups in an attempt to gain control. Following a notorious massacre of Tiyari Assyrians by the Kurdish Emir, Bedr Khan Beg, in 1848, the Western powers exerted pressure on the Ottomans. The Kurdish Emirate was dissolved and the region came under official Ottoman control just 2 years before this sketch of Julamerk was made by Clive. Clive Lithograph with hand colouring [London: Dickinson Bros, 1852] Image 240 x 338 mm, Sheet 315 x 415 mm unmounted The view depicts the Masajid of Husayn ibn Ali, whose shrine in the city of Karbala, Iraq, is one of the oldest and most important sites of pilgrimage for the followers of Shia Islam. The view depicts the ‘alQibla’ gate of the central mosque and mausoleum of Husayn, with numerous worshippers moving about the open courtyards. Karbala was the site of a battle in AD 680, in which Husayn, grandson of the Prophet, and his followers, were killed by the numerically superior army led by

the Umayyad caliph, Yazid I. Husayn’s body was buried in a small tomb close to where he was martyred. The present day mosque is built directly over this early shrine, with the burial place located in the central ‘Rawda,’ a courtyard garden. Clive’s 1850 view shows the Masajid after improvements made by Fat’h ‘Alī Shāh Qājār, after the precinct was damaged by Wahhabi looters during the early 1800s. The most significant of these improvements included the re-plating of the central dome with gold and the addition of silver-plated screens to the central shrine and courtyard. Condition: Trimmed to image and laid to original publisher’s sheet with manuscript title and border. Light water staining to bottom edge of sheet, not affecting image. [38929] £200

165. Ruined Fortress of Hoschab, Kurdistan Robert H. Clive Lithograph with hand colouring [London: Dickinson Bros, 1852] Image 245 x 365 mm, Sheet 315 x 435 mm unmounted The view depicts the ruin of Hoşap Castle, near Van in modern day Turkey. The castle’s distinctive silhouette on top of a rocky outcrop dominates the view, with the village of Hoşap at its foot. A triple arched bridge crosses the Büyük Deresi river at centre. In the foreground, a family gather water from the river, one woman with carrying a large urn on her head. To the right of the scene, a large group of travellers walk along a road on the opposite bank of the river, approaching the village. The road is flanked by serrated walls. In the distance, the river continues its path through a valley in the Taurus mountains. Hoşap Castle, also known as Güzelsu Castle, was built in 1643 by the local governor, the Ottoman

Kurdish Sari Süleyman Bey, on the site of an earlier Armenian settlement. Although the castle features a number of defensive architectural elements, including redoubts, machicolations, crenellated turrets and walls, and rifle and arrow slits, it is unlikely that it was intended as a strategic military structure. However, following the expulsion of the last emir, the castle served as a barracks for an Ottoman military detachment, which was still resident at the time Clive took this view. Condition: Trimmed to image and laid to original publisher’s sheet with manuscript title and border. Light water staining to bottom and left edges of sheet, not affecting image. [38935] £200

239. Design for Improving the Harbour of Bristol Faden, William Copper engraved Charring Cross 1803 450 x 1080 mm unmounted A finely engraved large scale plan of Bristol Harbour and it’s environs from Hotwells through central Bristol to Hanham Lock on the River Avon. The designs for the improvements were made by William Jessop, Civil Engineer and William White, Surveyor. Decorative engraved title, compass rose and scale of Chains. In the second half of the 18th century, the Avon’s notorious tidal rise and fall (the second greatest in the world) made the port unusable for much of the year and posed a serious threat to Bristol’s position as the country’s second port. Ships were increasing in size and the harbour’s steep mud banks at low tide meant that vessels leaned outward from the quays, risking serious damage. Something had to be done to keep them upright at all times. Various schemes were proposed and William Jessop’s plan for a Floating Harbour was accepted in 1802; it was completed in 1809, providing a tide-free enclosure for the city docks. The Bristol Dock Company was established to oversee the new harbour. (Bristol Records Office AC/PL/64) Condition: Printed on two sheets and joined, light vertical creases from being rolled. Repaired loss to top right of sheet and printed boarder. [37858] £400

240. A Map of Oxfordshire With the Roads Lea, Philip Copper engraved with hand colour Sold by Philip Lea at the Atlas & Hercules in Cheapside. London. [c. 1690] 366 x 482 mm framed A very scarce decorative map of the county of Oxfordshire, divided into Hundreds and with the roads marked. A boxed list provides the names of principle market towns and the Hundreds. Below is a large radiate compass with fleur-de-lis pointer. The title is boxed and topped with a simple four barred entablature, and a key in the bottom left corner is framed by a pair of cherubs carrying symbols of agricultural abundance. A pair of elaborate ribbons supported by more cherubs to the top left and right of the map show the arms of the colleges, as well as those of the University and King Alfred, the apocryphal founder of the University. This edition shows evidence of removal of another publication line left of the centre title, likely that of John Sellers (1632-1697) at the West Side of the Royal Exchange. During the 1680s, Sellers worked on a number of county maps for an Atlas Anglicanus, though after his publication of Lea’s revised Saxton in 1689, Sellers abandoned the Atlas Anglicanus and sold the plates to Lea, who reworked and reissued them. Condition: Framed in an antique gilt frame. Central vertical fold as issued. Two small oil-stains below compass. [38907] £2,000
