Oxford From the unusual to the iconic.

With the Oxford Book Fair just around the corner we have put together a catalogue of unusual and uncommon prints of Town & Gown alongside fine examples of iconic Oxford prints. The collection of over one hundred and fifty items not only portrays our historic city but many of the artworks were produced and published within the city walls as well.

This collection provides a rare opportunity to view and purchase seldom seen and in some cases previously un-catalogued material depicting the city of dreaming spires.

Highlights include an early working proof of John Pye’s engraving of Turners A View of Oxford from the Abingdon Road (no.14), a fine collection of Edmund Hort New’s decorative views of Oxford colleges, including the two rarest prints in the series; Hertford (no.59) and Keble College (no.63). Two superb and unique photographs on glass of Magdalen College Tower and Quad (no. 74, 75), a group photograph of Oriel College students including Cecil Rhodes (n. 129) as well as a small collection of decorative and architectural engravings of Blenheim Palace (no. 130-9). The catalogue closes with a selection of City and County maps by the leading map makers of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries (no. 140 – 151).

A companion print to Turner’s view of the High Street (no.18) this fine view of the city beyond the village of South Hinksey gives a splendid portrait of tranquility compared with the hustle and bustle of the countryside round Oxford today. A landscape steeped in history is united with scenes of rural productivity by the diffusion of light and shadow caused by the sky. Inspired by the landscape painters of the Dutch Golden Age, Turner’s work seems to adhere to the seventeenth-century concept of houding.

The idea of houding proffered the idea that spatial recession could be achieved through the layering of tone and object. Thus, depth and distance are attained in a painting through the juxtaposition of light and dark. This can be seen in Turner’s work as the light falls in sweeping fragments. Cows are eclipsed in shade but the chain of sheep are illuminated. Trees are dim but pastures beyond shimmer. On the horizon, the cityscape itself is divided into differing shards of tone.

John Pye (1782-1874) was a British printmaker, writer and publisher. Born in Birmingham, Pye relocated to London in 1801 where he took residence in Cirencester Place and worked for many book publishers.

As an illustrator for popular art annuals, he executed plates for landscapes by J. M. W. Turner, Claude Lorrain, and Gaspard Poussin amongst others. Preceding his Oxfordian views, Pye collaborated with Turner on James Hakewill’s Italy as well as the History of Richmondshire. Pye grew more literary in his later years and in addition to his strong advocacy for the inclusion of engravers in the Royal Academy, he published a work entitled the Patronage of British Art. Condition: Rich, clean impression. Trimmed within the plate and laid to archival card.

Large areas of the skyline remain blank, with minimal outline work to the sky and only preliminary hatching to middle and foreground details. The print was engraved by John Pye and the figures by Charles Heath, though his name does not appear on the final print.

J.M.W. Turner’s seminal view of Oxford High Street depicts the cobbled road looking towards Carfax Tower. To the south, a scholar in cap and gown descends some steps towards a group of people gathering up goods on the pavement.

Behind the spilt fruit of the hamper, laborers scale a ladder and dismantle the roof of Deep Hall. All of this occurs under the shadow of University College, deeply cast onto the famous cobblestones. In contrast, the north side of the road is bathed in sunshine. More students in academic dress feature. High above their heads, linear shafts of light fall upon All Saints Church and the University Church of St Mary the Virgin. The straight beams are beautifully counterpoised by the whirling of cloud.

Although unmarked the cup is possibly manufactured by Levi Greatbatch, the glass and china dealer, who lived at No. 15 High Street, Oxford.

From the first edition of 'Oxonia Illustrata' published in 1675.

Condition: Excellent clean impression. Vertical folds as issued. Trimmed close to plate mark along top.

Faint stain to title. Slight discolouration from previous mount.

45. Christ Church, Oxford Emery Walker after Edmund Hort New Photoengraving Published by Edmund Hort New, 17 Worcester Place, Oxford, AD 1916 Image 640 x 410 mm mounted Over a period of years Edmund Hort New did a series of prints of the Oxford Colleges based on the David Loggan's 1675 aerial perspectives. New took Loggan's format and enriched his prints with many fine details of and about the colleges and they are valued today by many collectors because of the high level of detail and the fact that they represent the colleges in their present state.

These prints were made through a relatively new process at the time - photo engraving. Like photogravures the print is made by transferring a photo to a copper plate and then printing it. With the E.H. New prints, a contact print of New's pen and ink drawing was made and the large negative attached to a plate which was then exposed in an acid bath, the acid only biting where the negative was clear; thus, creating an engraved plate of New's drawing. The prints were available separately at shops in Oxford such as Ryman's in the early part of the 20th century.

Edmund Hort New, known as E.H. New, was born in Evesham in 1871. He was the son of an important lawyer. He attended the Birmingham Municipal School of Art. He began painting landscape and later he devoted himself to illustration. Early in his career he worked with Ruskin and other associated Arts and Crafts artists. He latter went on to work for William Morris's Kelmscott Press. The influence of these experiences is evident in his prints - the decorative borders, armorials, etc.

Emery Walker (1851 - 1933) was a British master-printer, typographer and engraver. He was one of the leading figures in the Arts and Crafts Movement, and the revival of engraving. Walker helped to found the Kelmscott Press and was later a partner of Cobden-Sanderson in the Doves Press, where he was responsible for much of the successful work produced.

A fine aquatint view from Jean Claude Nattes’ A Graphic and Descriptive Tour of the University of Oxford. The series was a commercial failure after the publication of only the first two parts of the intended twenty-five, making these prints some of the scarcest early nineteenth century views of the City and University.

Condition: Staining to margins within the plate, not affecting image. Binding holes to top margin.

The series was a commercial failure after the publication of only the first two parts of the intended twenty-five, making these prints some of the scarcest early nineteenth century views of the City and University.

Engraved by J.Merigot or C.Rosenberg after a drawing by J.C.Nattes or C.A.Pugin, this plate had been prepared in expectation of the continued publication of the Tour of Oxford.

Despite the lack of title and imprint a few impressions were taken and sold as loose prints.

The process for the permanent photograph on glass was patented by William Robert Ake in April 1871.

The photograph would have been taken in the usual way by photosensitizing a glass plate with a bromide collodion. The plate was then put into a silver bath and exposed to light. The plate would then be put into a bath of pyrogallic acid or proto-sulphate, fixed by cyanide of potassium or hyposulphate of soda, wash and dried. To stain the picture permanently on glass the print was then placed in an airtight kiln until every part of the photo became dark brown. It was then cooled and washed. From Patents for Inventions Abridgments or Specifications relating to Photography, London, 1880.

W.H. Wheeler worked with Henry Taunt at 106 High Street from at least 1861 when it was Wheeler James. By 1866, the firm was known as Wheeler & Day and became W.H. Wheeler in 1872.

Image 288 x 467 mm, Frame framed The Star was a fifteenth-century coaching inn situated at 52 Cornmarket, Oxford. The front was replaced with a symmetrical façade in 1783.

Recorded innkeepers include Mrs Dupois (1823), Richard Staning (1830-1835), and Samuel Young Griffith (1839-1861). In 1863 the Star was acquired by the Oxford Hotel Company and renamed the Clarendon. The site is presently occupied by the Clarendon Centre.

An interesting example of the early use of photographs in a scrap album. This album belonged to one of the two children of Charles Crespingy Vivian, 2nd Baronet Vivian and his second wife Mary Elizabeth Panton: Charles Hamilton Viviann (18 March 1849- May 1902) or Charles Hussey Panton Vivian (26 June 1847 12 May 1892). Some of the photographs show the boy and his school friends at Rugby School, including a group photo of the students in their football strip.

Image 230 x 76, Plate 258 x 198 mm, Sheet 370 x 280 mm mounted To face the French threat at the end of the eighteenth century, the Volunteer Act was passed in 1794 which raised volunteer corps and companies fro the general defense of the country incase of invasion. A particular attraction for members of these volunteer companies was that it gave them exemption from the more onerous militia service and the system was extended by a further Act in 1797.

Local support was provided by the Oxford University Volunteers and the Oxford City Volunteers and they were amongst 8000 enthusiastic part-time soldiers who marched past George III in a birthday parade in Hyde park on 4th June, 1799. Whilst the militia was for the lower class, the Volunteers was full of the upper and middle classes.

Cecil Rhodes first attended Oriel College in 1873 but left in 1874 after falling ill and returning to Africa. He returned in 1876 to finish his degree.

Condition: Some chipping to outer edge of card and foxing on card not affecting the image. Old tape and some woodburn on verso of paper, not affecting the image.

[A Plan of the University and City of Oxford] Davis, Richard Copper engraved on four sheets Published by R.Davis, Lewknor, August 1, 1797 930 x 662 mm framed A scarce town plan from Richard Davis' large scale map of Oxfordshire engraved by John Cary on sixteen sheets and published, with a key map, in 1797. Though the city plan owes much to Isaac Taylor's map of 1751, it is, however, a delicately engraved work by one of the most competent engravers of the time. It was also the only large-scale contemporary plan of the city.

Condition: Professionally restored small tears to top margin and top right sheet. Small manuscript repair to centre.
