8. The Norns Watering the Tree of Life Etching William Bell Scott 1876 Image 245 x 165 mm, Plate 262 x 203 mm framed William Bell Scott (1811-1890) William Bell Scott, painter and poet, was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement from its beginning through his friendship with Rossetti. He produced oils and watercolours of Biblical and historical scenes, and also landscape paintings in the Pre-Raphaelite style.

Bell Scott was born in Edinburgh where he received his art education. His father was an engineer and his brother was the historical painter David Scott. He exhibited in Edinburgh and published poetry in the 1830's. In 1837 he moved to London where he associated with the genre painters of the Clique, who included Augustus Egg, Richard Dadd, John Phillip, Henry Nelson O'Neil and William Powell Frith. In London, Bell Scott exhibited in the British Institution from 1841 and the Royal Academy from 1842. On his failure to achieve success in the Westminster Hall cartoon competition in 1843 he took up the mastership of the School of Design in Newcastle, where he remained for the next twenty years, later providing an important link between the PreRaphaelites and their patrons in the north east of England. Although he contributed to “The Germ”, Scott was never a member of either Etching Club, since he worked and taught in Newcastle and later lived mainly in Ayrshire. His ideals were similar to those of most members of the Etching Club. He was a close friend of Dante Gabriel Rosetti and a great admirer of William Blake. At the time he was probably the most accomplished British artist working outside London. Ex. Col. Frank Emmanuel [20836] Was £400 Now £320

From History of the Freshwater Fish of Central Europe by Louis Agassiz and Carl Vogt. Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz (1807 – 1873) was a Swiss paleontologist, glaciologist, geologist and the first person to scientifically propose that the earth had been subject to a past ice age. A dedicated scholar of Ichthyology (the study of fish) the History of the Freshwater Fish of Central Europe was his second publication on the subject. Illustrated by his lifelong friend Joseph Dinkel, of which little is known other than his relation to Agassiz, this publication was begun in 1839 and completed in 1842. In 1840 Agassiz published Etudes sur les glaciers ("Study on Glaciers"), which put forward the theory of a past sequence of glacations develpoed alongside Jean de Charpentier and Karl Friedrich Schimper. The theory was met with much contemporary criticism, as most scientists of the day thought that the earth had been gradually cooling down since its birth as a molten globe, and wasn’t internationally accepted until the 1870s. 127. A New Map of the Terraqueous Globe according to the latest Discoveries and most general Divions of it into Contienents and Oceans. Copper engraved with hand colour Wells, Edward Published Oxford 1726-38 framed This decorative and instructional world map was part of a set of 22 maps dedicated to William, Duke of Gloucester, who was then an 11 year old student at Oxford. Wells was a teacher of mathematics and geography at Christ Church College. The 11 year old William, heir to the throne, began his studies at Christ Church in 1700 at the age of 11 and died a few months after the map was issued (1700). Wells designed his maps for instructional use in the geography courses he taught at Christ Church College at Oxford and his clear

and direct cartographic presentation proved popular with the general public as well. Something of a surprise commercial success, the atlas received several printings well into the 1730s.. The wonderfully decorative maps are greatly prized for their charming vignettes including views of Oxford, and provide a fascinating snapshot of British understanding of the world at the outset of the 18th century. Wells maps are known for geographical accuracy and the strength of the engraved images. This map shows California as an Island, an incomplete New Holland attached to N. Guinea, partial New Zealand Coast line and no Southern Continent. Michael Burgers was an engraver and draughtsman from Holland whom move to England and settled in Oxford in 1673. Whilst in Oxford he worked for David Loggan on Oxford Illustrata, published in 1675, and eventually succeeded Loggan as Engraver to the University. Burgers engraved the first Oxford Almanack in 1676 and continued to engrave most of them for the next 43 years.
