US NEWS Pentagon confirms killing of Quds Force chief at President Trump’s ‘directions’ HI INDIA NEWS DESK

P

entagon on Thursday (local time) said it has carried out a “defensive action” at the “direction” of President Donald Trump to protect US personnel abroad by killing the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, General Qassem Soleimani. Pentagon has released a statement hours after media around the world reported that Soleimani alongside six others was killed following a US airstrike at Baghdad’s international airport. Pentagon said that the strikes were aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans. Besides Soleimani, Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi alMuhandis was also killed in the US airstrike at Baghdad’s international airport, reported Iraqi officials and state television. “At the direction of the President, the U.S. military has taken decisive defensive action to protect U.S. personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force,” the statement said. Pentagon has accused Soleimani of orchestrating several attacks on coalition bases in Iraq including

Earlier in the day, Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said it’s time for Iran to start “acting like a normal country”. the December 27 attack in which American and Iraqi personnel were killed. “General Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region. General Soleimani and his Quds Force were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition service members and the wounding of thousands more,” the statement said. “He had orchestrated attacks on coalition bases in Iraq over the last several months - including the attack on December 27th - culminating in the death and wounding of additional American and Iraqi personnel. General Soleimani also

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei says the killing of Qassem Soleimani will double the motivation of resistance against the US and Israel approved the attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad that took place this week,” it added. The attack has come days after an Iran-backed militia and other protestors attacked the United States Embassy in Baghdad. The attack on the embassy came as a retaliation to a deadly US airstrike that killed at least 25 people of the PMF. The US has vowed to take action against the breach by protestors.

Earlier in the day, Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said it’s time for Iran to start “acting like a normal country”. “Through the President’s direction, we were able to physically defeat the caliphate that remains physically defeated, if you will,” he added. “And now our aim is to deter further Iranian bad behavior that has been going on now for over 40 years. It’s time that Iran started acting like a normal country.” (ANI)

China, Russia, Syria condemn US strike that killed Soleimani Beijing/Moscow (ANI): China, Russia and Syria on Friday condemned the US strike in Iraq that killed Iran’s elite Quds Force chief, General Qasem Soleimani. The US carried out a strike near Baghdad’s international airport killing Soleimani, a US-designated terrorist, along with six others on the direction of President Donald Trump. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said at a briefing on Friday that Beijing has “consistently opposed the use of military force in international relations”. “We are closely following this incident. China has consistently opposed the use of military force in international relations,” Shuang said at a briefing on Friday. Russia has called the missile strike by the US as an “irresponsible step that will lead to increased tensions throughout the Middle East region”. Moscow also offered condolences to the Iranian people over the death of Soleimani. “We consider the killing of Soleimani as a result of US missile strike in the outskirts of Baghdad as an ad-

venturous step that will lead to increased tensions throughout the region. Soleimani devotedly served the cause of protecting Iran’s national interests,” a Foreign Ministry official told Sputnik. Syria also condemned the “U.S. criminal aggression” which led to the killed of Soleimani. It also slammed Washington for the killing of the Deputy Chairman of Iraqi Popular Mobilization Commission Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and a number of the Mobilization’s cadres. “Syria condemns in strongest terms the U.S. criminal aggression which led to the martyrdom of leader of al-Quds Failaq, Iranian Major General Qasem Suleimani, and Deputy Chairman of Iraqi Popular Mobilization Commission Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and a number of the Mobilization’s cadres as a dangerous escalation of the situation in the region,” the statement said. The strike has escalated the tensions in the region. Iran vowed to take a “vigorous revenge” over the killing of Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite IRGC. Iran Foreign Minister summoned

the Swiss Charge d’affairs to Tehran, the US interest section in Iran, to

convey protest against US’ “terrorist” act. (ANI)

Pakistan miffed with US over action on Iran, says ‘important to avoid unilateral actions and use of force’ Islamabad [Pakistan], (ANI): Miffed with United States over its airstrike that killed Iran’s elite Quds Force chief General Qassem Soleimani, Pakistan on Friday said it is important for the countries to avoid “unilateral actions” and “use of force” and adhere to the fundamental principles of the UN charter. A statement by Pakistan Foreign Office said that Islamabad has viewed the recent development in the Middle East with “deep concerns”, which, it said, “seriously threaten peace and stability in the region.” “Pakistan has viewed with deep concern the recent developments in the Middle East, which seriously threaten peace and stability in the region,” the statement read. “Respect for sovereignty and

territorial integrity are the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, which should be adhered to. It is also important to avoid unilateral actions and use of force,” it added. The country urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, engage constructively to de-escalate the situation, and resolve issues through diplomatic means, “in accordance with UN Charter and international law.” Soleimani, a US-designated terrorist, along with six others, were killed in the airstrike carried out by the United States near Baghdad’s international airport. The strike has escalated tensions between the US and Iran, with Tehran vowing to take a “vigorous revenge” for the killing. (ANI) MC1152 Final Ads Sizes_Outline.indd 3

US CONGRATULATES GEN BIPIN RAWAT OVER HIS APPOINTMENT AS INDIA’S FIRST CDS “Congrats to Gen. Bipin Rawat @adgpi on his appointment as #India’s first-ever Chief of Defense Staff. The CDS position will help catalyze greater #USIndia “joint” cooperation between our militaries as discussed at recent 2+2, including through joint exercises and info sharing,” tweeted US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary (PDAS) Alice Wells, retweeting US Ambassador Ken Juster’s tweet.

HI INDIA NEWS DESK Washington [US], Dec 31 (ANI): The United States on Tuesday congratulated General Bipin Rawat on his appointment as India’s first-ever Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and said the post will help in “catalyzing greater” joint cooperation between the militaries of the two countries. “Congrats to Gen. Bipin Rawat @adgpi on his appointment as #India’s first-ever Chief of Defense Staff. The CDS position will help catalyze greater #USIndia “joint” cooperation between our militaries as discussed at recent 2+2, including through joint exercises and info sharing,” tweeted

US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary (PDAS) Alice Wells, retweeting US Ambassador Ken Juster’s tweet. This is the first time that this position has been created by the Indian government appointing General Rawat as the topmost defence officer of the country who will be the main point of contact for the government to deal with issues of defence forces. General Rawat will be completing his full threeyear term as the Chief of Army Staff on December 31. He will now continue to serve till March 2022 as the CDS where his main role would be to create synergy in operations and finances of the three services.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the creation of the post of Chief of Defence Staff in his Independence Day speech on August 15 this year. The recommendation for CDS was first made after the Kargil War in 1999. It was argued that this post will create better coordination between the three services -- the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval played a crucial role along with Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar to finalise the roles and responsibilities of the new office of the Chief of Defence Staff. (ANI)

We received so many queries from international ticketing agents who have

been booking AI tickets for many years about the (possible) closure of Air India,” a senior official told ANI He said there has been a huge decline in international ticket bookings.

Air India has reported 27 per cent revenue from Europe, 18-20 per cent revenue from the United States (US) and 12-15 per cent from the middle east countries. “Air India has told all

AI international station managers to deal with passengers confidently and explain the truth about the airline.” the official said. Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had said in an interaction with media that “Air India is making 20-26 crore loss on a daily basis. He had also told the parliament in November that “Air India would have to be closed down if not privatised”. The airline has debt of around 60,000 crore. This fundamental duty and spirituality that generates the feelings of oneness, this is called Hindutva,” he said. Where you won’t get independence to question is not Hindutva, where there is no place for curiosity and where one has no right to ask questions. This is not new but it became more popular in the seventh and eighth century. You would ask why? The reason is that it is for the first time that India was looking at a conqueror that was extremely intolerant. So, diversity in India was in danger,” the senior RSS functionary said. “Guru Nanak Dev differentiated between Hindutva and Turks. He entered India and all Indians came on one platform and over 1,100 years, the

Speaking at an event to mark RSSTelangana’s Vijay Sankalp Shibir on Wednesday, Bhagwat had said that India has traditionally been ‘Hindutvawadi’ and that the Sangh regards the 130 crore population of the country as ‘Hindu society’ irrespective of the diversity of religion and culture here. “When RSS calls someone a Hindu then it means those people who consider India as their motherland and love it...The son of mother India, irrespective of what language he speaks, which religion he practices, whether he follows any form of worship or not, is a Hindu,” Bhagwat said. “So for the Sangh, all 130 crore people of India are a Hindu society. India has traditionally been ‘Hindutvawadi’, RSS regards 130 cr population of India as Hindu society: Mohan Bhagwat

SS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Wednesday said that India has traditionally been “Hindutvawadi” and that the Sangh regards the 130 crore population of the country as “Hindu society” irrespective of the diversity of religion and culture here. “When RSS calls someone a Hindu then it means those people who consider India as their motherland and love it...The son of mother India, irrespective of what language he speaks, which religion he practices, whether he follows any form of worship or not, is a Hindu,” Bhagwat said while addressing people at a three-day programme of RSS here. “So for the Sangh, all 130 crore people of India are a Hindu society. RSS considers everyone as their own and wants the development of everyone. Sangh wants to take everyone together,” he said. “...The traditional thought of India is to move ahead together... People say we are ‘Hindutvawadi’. Our country has traditionally been ‘Hindutvawadi’...,” the RSS chief said. Bhagwat said that the Sangh works for the country and they always want Dharma to win. Quoting Rabindranath Tagore, he said that politics alone cannot bring change in the country, change can only be brought about by people. “There is a famous saying that there is unity in diversity. But our country goes a step ahead. Here we have not just unity in diversity, but also diversity of unity. We are not searching for unity in diversity. We are searching for the unity from which the diversity comes and there are different ways to achieve unity.”

Facebook blocks Radio Pakistan’s live streaming of news bulletins over Kashmir coverage

I

slamabad [Pakistan], Dec 30 (ANI): Radio Pakistan, the country’s state broadcaster on Monday said that Facebook has blocked live streaming of news bulletins over the alleged human rights situation in Kashmir. However, temporary arrangements have been made to continue live streaming of the news bulletins on YouTube, Radio Pakistan reported. In its report, the broadcaster also included screenshots of earlier warning messages received from the social-media giant, dating back to May, warning it of violating “community standards on dangerous individuals and organisations”. Specifically, these posts were related to news stories about the death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahideen leader Burhan Wani in July and the curfew imposed after the death of Zakir Musa, also a Hizbul Mujahideen commander, in May. Addressing a news conference in Islamabad on Monday, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan stated that Pakistan has to move away from international [social media] platforms in order to become more self-reliant. Talking about Kashmir, she said, “As we have seen, every time we try to highlight human rights violations on social media platforms, such as Facebook, the accounts are suspended”. “We have raised our voices against this before and will do so again in the future and will have those accounts restored,” she added. According to media reports, Facebook, in 2016, came under fire for censoring dozens of posts related to the death of Wani. Photos, videos and entire accounts of academics and journalists as well as entire pages of local newspapers were removed for posting about the Valley. Of the 17,807 content restrictions made by Facebook globally, the highest number -over 31 per cent -- of the requests originated from Pakistan between January and July 2019, according to the platform’s latest transparency report released in November. Facebook restricted 5,690 items within Pakistan during the first half of 2019, as compared to 4,174 pieces from the second half

General Bajwa’s extension case: PTI lobbies with opposition parties for amendments in Army Act

I

HI INDIA NEWS DESK

slamabad [Pakistan], Jan 2 (ANI): The Pakistan Tehreeke-Insaf (PTI) led government on Thursday reached out to members of opposition parties to garner support for making amendments to the Army Act and the Constitution in order to give a three-year extension to the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa. The move comes a day after the proposed amendments were rushed through the Cabinet, which unanimously granted its approval for the changes, both to the Constitution and the Army Act, reported Dawn. Pakistan’s Supreme Court in November last year had directed the government to remove ambiguity in rules on the issue of extension in the army chief ’s tenure. A delegation of PTI lawmakers including Defence Minister Pervez Khattak, Ali Muhammad Khan and Qasim Suri, met PPP leaders, including the party chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari earlier in today evening. According to sources, the PPP assured its support for the amendments but raised concern over the fact that details of the amendments had not been shared with the opposition lawmakers. Bilawal during the meeting pushed for the government to follow the parliamentary rules and regulations regarding amendments in the Army Act, party sources added. Earlier in the day, a delegation of PTI lawmakers including Defence Minister Khattak, Leader of the House for the Senate Shibli

The government is likely to introduce the amendment bill in parliament on Friday (tomorrow) after building a consensus with the opposition on the matter.

Faraz and Senator Azam Swati, met PML-N leaders, where the latter assured their support for the proposed amendments. The PML-N delegation comprised Khawaja Asif, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and Rana Tanvir, among others. PML-N Senator Mushahidullah Khan told reporters that the party leadership in London has given the nod to support the amendments through consensus. The government is likely to introduce the amendment bill in parliament on Friday (tomorrow) after building a consensus with the opposition on the matter.

The government needs the support of opposition parties to make the amendments as any amendment to the Constitution needs to be approved by at least two-thirds of the membership of each House - the National Assembly and Senate. Millions of dollars raised for re-election campaign despite impeachment process: Trump’s campaign manager Washington [USA], Jan 3 (Sputnik/ANI): US President Donald Trump has raised USD 46 million from political donors in the fourth quarter of last year for his re-election campaign which shows he is getting stronger despite the impeachment process, said Brad Parscale, Trump’s campaign manager.

In a tweet on Thursday Parscale wrote, “Biggest number in Trump fundraising haul is USD 102.7 million cash-on-hand. The President’s campaign will be flush with cash to execute the game plan and expand the map.” Trump’s collection in the fourth quarter coincided with his impeachment in Congress by rival Democrats, a move that appeared to have energized his base of supporters. Parscale picked up on that fact, adding to his tweet: “Dems impeach & Trump gets stronger!” US media reports said Trump’s strong fundraising was a direct result of his decision to keep his campaign apparatus alive after taking office in January 2017.

Ranjit came to Mumbai to meet Thackeray over Congress Seva Dal booklet which claimed that Savarkar had a ‘physical relationship’ with Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse. As Thackeray did not meet him, Ranjit after submitting the letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office, said; “I came to meet the Chief Minister. I had sent several requests for an appointment but I could not meet him. He didn’t have a minute to talk to me even when it’s about Savarkar ji’s respect. I am highly disappointed. It is an insult to Savarkar ji.” He said that he came to Mumbai to request Thackeray that state government should also file a case against those who have insulted Savarkar. He questioned that the “importance of Savarkar has reduced that Chief Minister cannot give his two minutes” over the issue related to him.

Not just for aesthetics: Common resistance exercises can reverse strength loss from prolonged inactivity Common gym staple strength exercises like the leg press can alleviate the ill-effects of prolonged muscle inactivity. Situations such as hospitalisation for many years leads to a rapid loss of muscular strength, which can adversely affect balance, make joints more injury-prone and impede performance in sports activities. These findings emerged in a study from the University of Roehampton that was published in the journal Experimental Physiology. Thus, rehabilitation programmes should work to build the strength involved in these types of activities, using typical resistance exercises, but with the attention of lifting the resistance as rapidly as possible.

because, according to its findings, consumption of caffeine can potentially control weight gain and cholesterol levels by blunting the effects of a diet that’s high in sugars and fats. Fox News reported that the study was carried out on rats who were fed a relatively unhealthy diet for four weeks in a row, which consisted of 40-45 percent carbohydrates and just 15 percent protein. In conjugation to this, the rats were administered a tea containing phytochemicals, flavonoids, and amino acids. Caffeine dosages ranged from 65 to 135 milligrams per serving. The rats were also fed additional sources of caffeine. The final result of this experiment showed that the rats have proven difficult to study in a laboratory environment, as there are ethical issues with enforcing prolonged physical inactivity. Previous research has shown that the thigh muscles of individuals with an amputation below the knee are used less during movement and therefore become weak. Amy Sibley, Neale Tillin and colleagues at the University of Roehampton, therefore, used belowknee amputees as a model to understand muscular changes that happen with long-term inactivity. Similar changes might happen in the muscles of someone who is hospitalised, sedentary, or travelling in space. Scientific studies have previously defined two main types of strength: maximum and explosive. Maximum strength is what it sounds like, the maximum capacity of your muscles for producing force. People rarely need to utilise

that were administered caffeine dropped a significant amount of body fat. The fat absorption went down by 22 per cent and weight gain slowed down by 16 per cent. “The consumption of caffeine from (tea) or from other sources alleviated the negative impact of a high-fat, high-sucrose diet on body composition due to the modulation of certain lipogenic enzymes in both adipose tissue and the liver,” said Elvira Gonzalez de Mejia, who co-authored this study. These findings can be scaled according to the human model to further explore the efficacy of caffeine-containing beverages, like coffee and tea, in aiding weight loss and cholesterol control. (ANI) this maximum capacity in daily activities. Explosive strength is the ability to quickly produce force and is relevant during many daily activities such as recovering from a loss of balance, avoiding joint injuries, and when playing sports. The researchers showed that when they compared maximum and explosive strength, amputees lost comparatively more explosive strength. They also found that the muscular changes that accompanied this reduction in strength could not have been anticipated from the typical short-term bedrest studies, and were specific to the type of strength examined. Therefore, rehabilitation regimens (for amputees or other populations who have experienced inactivity) should be tailored to help them recover explosive strength specifically.

A chance to dress up like Prince: Music legend’s own designers release ‘1999’ inspired clothing line Toronto [Canada], (ANI): The very designers, who worked with the rock legend Prince from 2011 till his demise in 2016, have come up with an assorted collection of clothing inspired by his album ‘1999.’ The two designers -- Lori Marcuz and Cathy Robinson -- who are behind the Call & Response clothing line from Toronto, have collaborated with the Prince estate in creating made-to-order jackets, tunics and vests, reported the New York Post. The designers said in an interview to Vogue that they never came face to face with the star in real life and had to figure out the correct fit by scanning through YouTube videos of his performances. Other artists such as Sly, Family

Stone, and Jimi Hendrix were used as inspiration for Prince’s clothing. The newly launched wardrobe range draws its style from the album ‘1999’ that was released back in 1982. The clothes are priced between 175 dollars for a handdyed shirt to 2,600 dollars for a studded trench coat. Marcuz said: “We watched a lot of footage. We listened to the album, again and again, trying to remember what it was like to hear ‘1999’ for the first time back in the day.” Creating new renditions of Prince’s iconic clothes reminded the designers of the time when they worked with him. That phase according to Marcuz and Robinson had a profound impact on their careers. (ANI)

The president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige while giving a talk at the New York Film Academy was asked whether Marvel’s films would have more LGBTQ representation, to which he replied ‘Absolutely yes’, cited Fox News. Kevin further said that

the transgender character would appear in a Marvel film “very soon, in a movie we’re shooting right now.” Feige reportedly did not provide any additional details. The news comes months after Marvel released Avengers: Endgame which features its first openly gay character, played by Joe Russo.

merican singer and actor Jennifer Lopez seemed all set for her Super Bowl performance 2020 on February 2 in Miami for the season’s biggest football game. According to Fox News, Lopez is ready to perform with Shakira on Sunday, February 2 in Miami for the season’s biggest football game and has high hopes for her performance. The singer was lately vocal about her upcoming show at the Super Bowl. JLo told to Entertainment Tonight that, “I cannot tease or reveal, but we are rehearsing. I started in December, now it’s crunch time. We’re all coming back, we’re all excited. It’s going to be a great show, what can I tell you? We’re going to try to give the best Super Bowl ever,” reported Fox News. On Thursday night, the singer and outlet were at the 31st Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Film Awards Gala, where she accepted an award for her work in the movie ‘Hustlers.’ She got the Spotlight award which is often a precursor of an Oscar nomination. about Faiz and the recent controversy, the writer told ANI, “Calling Faiz Ahmed Faiz ‘anti-Hindu’ is so absurd and funny that it’s difficult to seriously talk about it.” The writer further said that Faiz wrote the poem ‘Hum Dekhenge’ against the then Pakistan government run by the former President of the country Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. “He lived half his life outside Pakistan, he was called anti-Pakistan there. ‘Hum Dekhenge’ he wrote against Zia ul Haq’s government which was a communal regressive and fundamentalist government,” Akhtar told ANI. Further rejecting the claim of the poem being ‘anti-Hindu’, Akhtar explained a phrase from the poem and said, “He has mentioned a

phrase - ‘Goonjega an-al-haq ka naara’ which means ‘aham brahma’, which means that the creator and creation is one, it is not an Islamic thought.” Earlier on Thursday, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has set up a committee to look into the issue. The move came after some faculty member complaint that the students who took out a peaceful march in the campus on December 17 against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and in solidarity with Jamia Millia Islamia students, sung it as a mark of protest, which hurt the sentiments of other communities. The CAA grants citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and came to India on or before December 31, 2014. community news Indian-Americans Stranded at JFK Airport for Not Carrying Old Cancelled Passports

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY- At least 16 Indian Americans with valid OCI cards headed to New Delhi from the United States experienced some anxious moments at the John F Kennedy airport on Dec. 22 as the national carrier Air India was unable to process their boarding passes since they were not carrying their old cancelled passports, officials said. As per the new temporary rules, which they were unaware of, these passengers were required to carry their old cancelled passport whose number is mentioned in their Overseas Citizens of India card. Under the provisions of the OCI card, which gives the cardholder lifelong visa to India, those below 20 years and above 50 years need to renew their OCI card every time they have their passport renewed. Early this month, the provision has been relaxed till June 30, 2020, but the OCI cardholders concerned have been asked to carry their old passports with them to fly to India, noted PTI. However, not many OCI cardholders are aware of these new rules, officials said.

N

While all of these Indian American passengers were carrying a valid OCI card, they did not have along with them their old passports. With less than 30 minutes for the Air India counter at the JFK airport to close down, these 16 passengers through Milliendrid Thivalapali, an Air India employee, reached out to Prem Bhandari, an Indian American community activist and also the head of Jaipur Foot USA since he has been active in the area. “All these 16 Indian Americans would have been stranded at the airport and would have been forced to go back home or rebook their tickets at an additional expense, but for the high-level interventions by Indian Ambassador to the U.S. Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Consul General in New York Sandeep Chakravorty and Air India (North America) head Kamal Roul,” said Bhandari. The passengers were allowed to board Air India only after Chakravorty wrote an email to Air India at JFK Airport, minutes before it was scheduled to take off, as per report. Bhandari said that following the email all 16 passengers were allowed to board the flight.

Where Business is Pleasure

BY A STAFF WRITER OAKLAND, CA -- A man died Tuesday afternoon after he chased down a suspect or suspects who stole his laptop at a Starbucks in Oakland. The New Year’s Eve tragedy marked the city’s 75th murder this year. Witnesses describe the man as young, in his 20s or 30s. He died of severe head injuries after being taken to a hospital. Witnesses say he was working on his laptop at the Starbucks near a window when his computer was snatched. He chased the suspects outside to their getaway car. “When the suspect approached and took the laptop the victim chased the suspects right around the corner here to Antioch,” said Oakland police officer John Watson.

Police will not confirm what happened next but witnesses claim the man approached the getaway car and may have grabbed a door handle in an effort to get his laptop back. They say the car accelerated, causing the man to slam his head into a parked car. Police say Oakland Fire Department personnel witnessed some of the crime and immediately rendered first aid. The suspect or suspects got away. Police are analyzing video from many of the surveillance cameras mounted throughout the business district and have not yet released a vehicle description. Oakland police are asking for the public’s help. If anyone took a photo or video of the incident they want them to contact investigators.

USCIS NEWS RELEASE WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is updating the USCIS Policy Manual to clarify the effect of travel outside the United States by Temporary Protected Status (TPS) beneficiaries who are subject to removal proceedings. In particular, this update (PDF, 317 KB) covers beneficiaries who have final removal orders, and who depart the United States and return with an advance parole travel document. TPS beneficiaries in removal proceedings who travel abroad temporarily with the authorization of DHS remain subject to those removal proceedings. If

they are under a final order of removal, the travel does not execute or fulfill the order. The alien in question remains subject to the removal order. The Executive Office for Immigration Review of the Department of Justice will generally have jurisdiction over an adjustment of status application filed by a TPS beneficiary subject to removal proceedings. USCIS continues to have jurisdiction over requests from aliens initially paroled into the United States. By statute, upon return to the United States with TPS travel authorization, TPS beneficiaries retain the same immigration status they held before departing the United States.

BY A STAFF WRITER SAN FRANCISCO, CA- A short story “Grace & Mercy” written by Indian American author Anoop Judge and originally published in the annual issue of Green Hills Literary Lantern, a publication of Truman University, has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. “Grace & Mercy,” a story excerpted from a novel that Judge has been working on for the past three years, is about a childhood romance and an affair between two Dalit orphans. Judge, an attorney and former TV presenter and blogger, was born and raised in New Delhi, and now settled in California. She is the author of “Law: What’s It All About & How To Get In,” a “for dummies”style guide to breaking into law, put out

by a publishing house in New Delhi. Her previous novel, “The Rummy Club,” was her first attempt to fictionalize the experiences

of Indians abroad. The novel won the 2015 Beverly Hills Book Award and received three other awards. Her essays and short stories have appeared in Down in the Dirt magazine, in Ornament anthology, in Scarlet Leaf Review, and in Moon magazine. A 10,000-word excerpt from Judge’s unpublished novel, “The Awakening of Meena Rawat,” was published in July 2019 in Litbreak magazine. The Pushcart Prize is an American literary prize published by Pushcart Press that honors any combination of poetry, short stories, essays, memoirs or stand-alone excerpts from novels published in small presses over the previous year. Magazine and small book press editors throughout the world are invited to submit up to six works they have featured.

“Indu Empowers Now” PA based NGO Working to Combat Domestic Violence BY A STAFF WRITER PITTSBURG, PA -Indu Empowers Now, a Pittsburg, Pennsylvania-based nonprofit initiative founded to combat domestic violence in Indian American and South Asian communities across the U.S., is making efforts geared towards providing culture specific resources to survivors across the country. South Asian populations are under served when it comes to domestic violence, especially considering the high percentage of South Asian survivors of intimate partner violence in developed countries, the organization stated, adding that Indu’s services attempt to serve first-generation South Asian immigrants, who face various obstacles when trying to leave their abusers. “Factors like financial dependence, immigration status, lack of support groups, language and cultural barriers prevent survivors from seeking help,” the NGO explained. Thus, Indu connects lawyers, translators and immigration services to South Asian domestic violence shelters across the country, while instituting

support groups in the Greater Pittsburgh Area. Additionally, Indu, which has been recognized by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf, is developing a portal that allows users to sign up to volunteer and donate to South Asian domestic violence shelters across the U.S. To combat the pattern of violence that pervades South Asian communities, Indu

is collaborating with Promundo to hold community trainings for men of South Asian descent across Pittsburgh. These trainings, said the organization, will help develop positive attitudes towards family-life by educating men about their role as engaged parents and partners. Promundo is a nonprofit that engages men and boys in promoting gender equality and preventing violence.

U.S. CBP NEWS RELEASE RICHMOND, CA- An Indian American taxi driver was attacked outside his Richmond, California, home early morning Dec. 15, allegedly by a man wielding a barbecue pit pan. Baljeet Singh Sidhu, 57, told Richmond police that he was finishing up his shift early that morning around 4 a.m. and looking for a place to park at the Hilltop Mall. A person knocked on his car window and asked for a lighter from Sidhu, who wears a religiously mandated turban and beard. Sidhu told the man he didn’t have one. He then drove away but came back to the same spot in his search for a parking spot. This time, the assailant came up to him, said he had $5 and asked him for a ride. Sidhu told him his shift was over. The victim then found a place to park. As he got out of his car, the alleged assailant came back and repeatedly hit him on the head with a barbecue pit lid, adding that he suffered multiple bruises and other injuries. The man then allegedly put Sidhu in a chokehold. He fell down but tried to free himself. As he yelled for help, a mall security guard came over to help. Sidhu was hospitalized and treated for multiple wounds, he believes he was attacked for how he looks. The suspect, however, who was still at large as of Dec. 24, did not use any racially charged comments, nor did he rob Sidhu. Surveillance camera footage from a neighbor caught the entire incident. United Sikhs has asked for the incident to be investigated as a hate crime. The organization has called upon the FBI and the Justice Department for a federal investigation because of the possibility of a hate crime. Richmond police said they are not investigating the incident as a bias-motivated crime, but simply an altercation between two males. Sidhu also works as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service.
