nited States President Donald Trump on Thursday said the proposed new Indian tariffs have complicated negotiations, but he will “talk business” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he visits Ahmedabad and New Delhi on February 24 and 25.

“I’m going to India next week and we’re talking trade,” Trump said at a rally in Colorado. “They’ve been hitting us very hard for many, many years but I really like Prime Minister Modi. We’ve got to talk a little...We’ve got to talk a little business. It’s been hitting us hard.

They give us tariffs, one the highest in the world is India.”

Both India and the United States have repeatedly resolved to strengthen trade ties but attempts at working out an agreement failed even during Modi’s visit to Houston in September.

Trump also said the United States “may make a tremendous deal” with India, but also simultaneously indicated that the talks on this might slow down if he did not

get a good deal. Earlier, on Tuesday, the president said they were “not treated very well” by India and that he was saving the trade deal for later on.

In New Delhi, an Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said on Thursday that India will not “rush into” a trade deal with the United States, saying there needed to be a balanced outcome.

The US President also referred to reports that a turnout of nearly 10 million is expected at Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad. “I hear around six to 10 million people are going to show along the road to one of the largest cricket stadiums in the world, which is brand new and beautiful,” he added. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi said we will have 10 million people greet you – that is my problem. We have a packed house.

We have thousands of people who will not be able to get in. It’s going to look like peanuts from now on.

How can we be satisfied if we fill a stadium of only 60,000 people,” he asked.

INDIA-US TRADE DEAL A report by United States Congress’ think tank Congressional Research Service, released on February 14, noted that the trading relationship between the two countries is “more consequential for India”. It said that in 2018, the US was India’s second-largest goods export market with a 16.0% share with the European Union in first place (17.8%). The US was also the third largest goods import supplier (6.3%) after China (14.6%) and the European Union 28 (10.2%) in the same year.

Negotiations between India and the US have centred around preferential access to the Indian market for American makers of stents and other medical devices as well as dairy farmers. India has offered the United States partial access to its poultry and dairy markets in an effort to sign a limited trade deal, a report said on February 14.India is the world’s largest milkproducing country. However, it has hesitated to open its dairy market in order to protect the livelihoods of eight crore rural households engaged in the industry.

As a presidential election year gets underway in the US, there are growing concerns about the influence of foreign media organizations on public opinion.

China said on Wednesday that it would expel three Wall Street Journal reporters working in mainland China, a significant escalation of Beijing’s pressure on the foreign news media.

At a daily news briefing, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the reporters’ credentials would be revoked in retaliation for a headline on an essay that ran in The Journal’s editorial pages this month. The headline read “China Is the Real Sick Man of Asia.”

Chinese officials have “demanded that The Wall Street Journal recognize the seriousness of the error, openly and formally apologize, and investigate and punish those responsible, while retaining the need to take further measures against the newspaper,” Geng Shuang, the ministry spokesman, said in a transcript provided by the Chinese government.

“The Chinese people do not welcome media that publish racist statements and smear China with malicious attacks,” he added.

Attorney General Barr considering quitting over Trump tweets – source

Popular Indian-American standup comedian Hasan Minhaj, who has been critical of both US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, would perform at the annual dinner of the White House Correspondents Association.

U.S. Attorney General William Barr is considering resigning over President Donald Trump‘s tweets about Justice Department investigations, a source familiar with the situation told Reuters on Tuesday. Barr has told people close to Trump about his concerns, but it was not immediately clear if Barr had told Trump directly, the Washington Post added in a report.

“He has his limits,” the newspaper quoted one person familiar with Barr’s thinking as saying.

Barr may be sharing his position with people close to Trump in hopes the president gets the message and stops tweeting about the Justice Department’s criminal investigations, the Post said.

The White House and the Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Post report.

The delegation will also include officials from the president’s National Security Council. The state department will be represented by the US ambassador to India Ken Juster, as all other officials, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, are staying back in Washington DC for a conference of heads of US missions from all over the world, according to people familiar these developments.

Secretary of defense Mark Esper will also not be on the president’s delegation because he is scheduled to make a separate, and his first, visit to India later, perhaps in March.

The president, who will be accompanied

by First Lady Melania Trump, will begin his two-day India tour in Ahmedabad with a visit to Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram and a public rally at a stadium that the president has spoke about enthusiastically, specially the “millions” of people he is expecting to see.

The presence of the president’s son-inlaw Kushner in the visiting delegation is being seen as significant, given how close he is to Trump and how many of the administration’s key initiatives he has spearheaded including the recently announced West Asia peace plan. It could not be ascertained if the president’s daughter Ivanka Trump will also be on the delegation.

The White House on Wednesday denied an allegation that President Donald Trump had offered to pardon Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder who is fighting extradition to the United States, if he absolved Russia of hacking Democratic emails during the 2016 campaign.

Assange’s legal team told a court in London on Wednesday that Trump had made the offer in 2017 through Dana Rohrabacher, who at the time was a Republican congressman from California.

Local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Gujarat have been preparing for US president Donald Trump’s visit for around 10 days now. From Mehsana to Vadodara, they have mobilised supporters and members; hired buses to ferry tens of thousands of people to Ahmedabad on February 24 for the big ‘Namaste Trump’ roadshow and event.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is set to revamp 35 traffic junctions in the city at an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore with Basaveshwara circle in Central Business District being revamped first at a cost of Rs 3 crore. Speaking to indianexpress. com BBMP Mayor Goutham Kumar said, “the proposal will be part of the upcoming budget. The plan to beautify 35 junctions is to give international standards to the city junctions which will improve the look of the city.”

According to the BBMP’s design plan for the Basaveshwara circle (Chalukya Circle), footpaths will be developed using cobblestones. There will be railings around the junction, street lights, and other amenities.

More than 2,000 women, men, and children continued to protest in Old Washermanpet’s Lala Gunda area for the fourth consecutive day.

The sit-in protest against the citizenship law entered the fourth day in Chennai’s Old Washermanpet’s Lala Gunda area after city police resorted to lathicharge at an anti-CAA demonstration last week.

More than 2,000 people, most of them women, are refusing to disperse unless the Tamil Nadu government passes a resolution in the assembly against CAA, NRC and NPR, and initiate action against the police officials involved in Friday’s lathicharge. The protest intensified a day after several demonstrators were injured in Friday’s lathicharge. During the scuffle, four police personnel including joint commissioner P Vijayakumari, two women constables and a sub-inspector were injured. On Saturday, close to 3,000 people including women and children occupied Saja Munusamy and Aziz Mohamed streets in Lala Gunda area began a sit-in protest against the police action.

Walking 10,000 steps each day not enough to prevent weight gain: Study

o amount of walking can prevent weight gain by itself, according to a study which suggests that the widely practised standard of pacing 10,000 steps a day to lose weight may not be solely effective.

Researchers, including those from Brigham Young University in the US, studied 120 college freshmen over their first six months of college as they participated in a step-counting experiment. According to the study, published in the Journal of Obesity, the participants walked either 10,000, 12,500 or 15,000 steps a day, six days a week for 24 weeks, while the scientists tracked the amount of calories the freshmen consumed and their weight.

The scientists examined if exceeding the recommended count of 10,000 steps per day would minimise weight and fat gain in the college students, the study noted.

Many study participants reported they had smelled an absent partner’s clothing because it made them feel relaxed or secure.

Smelling the shirt of your partner can improve the quality of sleep, suggests new research.

The research was conducted by researchers of the University of British Columbia. The researchers found that study participants who were exposed to their partner’s scent overnight experienced better sleep quality, even though their partner was not physically present. “Our findings provide new evidence that merely sleeping with a partner’s scent improves sleep efficiency. Our participants had an average sleep efficiency improvement of more than two per cent,” said the lead researcher, Marlise Hofer.

“We saw an effect similar in size to what has been reported from taking oral melatonin supplements -- often used as a sleep aid,” added Hofer.

For the study, the researchers analyzed sleep data from 155 participants who were given two identical-looking t-shirts to use as pillowcases -- one had been previously worn by their romantic partner, and the other had either been previously worn by a stranger or was clean.

To capture body odour on the t-shirts, the participants’ partners were given a clean t-shirt to wear for 24 hours, and were asked to refrain from using deodorant and scented body products, smoking, exercising and eating certain foods that could affect their body odour. The t-shirts were then frozen to preserve their scent.

BY A STAFF WRITER SPRINGFIELD,IL – Smaller businesses will once again be able to benefit from a tax credit for creating new full-time jobs under a plan announced by Senator Ram Villivalam and Representative Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz (D-Glenview) today.

“Small businesses make a community vibrant and unique, and this encourages them to seek out more employees,” said Villivalam, a Chicago Democrat. “This tax credit was introduced during the recession, and it should not have been allowed to lapse under the previous governor.”

The proposed legislation would provide small businesses with a tax credit worth $5,000 per new employee making at least $15 an hour and working 35 hours per week. A total of $75 million in tax credits will be awarded, with the credit set to sunset after six years.

“This legislation will spur economic development and help create jobs,” said

Elliot Richardson, president of the Small Business Advocacy Council. “Small businesses drive our economy and support local communities. Passing this important bill will send the right message to Illinois entrepreneurs, empower the small business community and foster economic growth.”

The legislation will be Senate Bill 3498.
