White House moves forward with wall funding despite lawsuits Sixteen states file a lawsuit challenging Trump’s authority to divert federal funds to build a border wall by declaring a national emergency IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he White House is moving forward with plans to shift existing federal funds to pay for construction of a wall on the southern border, a senior administration official said. In the face of several lawsuits challenging US President Donald Trump’s authority to declare a national emergency to reallocate billions of dollars toward a border wall, the White House plans to first draw from the Defense Department’s drug interdiction program and the Treasury Department’s asset forfeiture funds before moving to divert military construction funds, the official said. Unlike the first two pots of money, the latter can only be accessed through a national emergency declaration, which is now the focus of several lawsuits, reports CNN. Cohen recently had “a serious surgical procedure” and needs more time for recovery, according to his lawyer Michael Monico, reports Xinhua news agency. Earlier, House Intelligence Committee postponed Cohen’s closeddoor testimony until February 28. The Senate Intelligence Committee has also subpoenaed Cohen for an appearance in a closed door session. Cohen pleaded guilty last year to charges that included campaignfinance violations for paying hush money to women who claimed to

funds. Trump early this week told reporters he believes he is on solid legal footing as he responded to news of the lawsuits being filed. “I think we’ll do very well. We have an absolute right to do that,” Trump said. “We need strong borders. We have to stop drugs and crime and criminals and human trafficking and we have to stop all of those things that a strong wall will stop.” He added that his administration is already “working with the Army Corps of Engineers” as he

moves forward with plans to build additional barriers on the southern border. Funds from the Treasury Department and Defense Department would be moved to the Army Corps of Engineers to pay for the wall construction, a separate source familiar with the process said. White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said on Friday that it planned to access $2.5 billion from the Pentagon’s drug interdiction program (some of which would be reprogrammed from other accounts), $600 million from Treasury’s asset forfeiture fund and another $3.6 billion from military construction projects. That’s in addition to Congress appropriating $1.375 billion for additional barriers on the southern border, which Trump considered insufficient. A senior White House official said White House counsel Pat Cipillone will consult with the Justice Department on how to respond to the lawsuits, but the Justice Department will take the lead in the legal response. The White House anticipated the lawsuits to US President’s emergency declaration and are bracing for more, according to the official.

Alabama woman who joined IS should not return to US: Trump WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that he directed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo not to allow Hoda Muthana, an Alabama woman who left in November 2014 to join IS, to return to the US — despite her recent public plea to come back and stand trial in America. “I have instructed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and he fully agrees, not to allow Hoda Muthana back into the Country!,” Trump tweeted. Hours earlier, Pompeo declared that Muthana, who is detained in a Kurdish refugee camp, is not an American citizen, reports CNN. “Ms. Hoda Muthana is not a US citizen and will not be admitted into the US. She does not have any legal basis, no valid US passport, no right to a passport, nor any visa to travel to the US,” Pompeo said in a statement. Muthana, now 24, was a college student when she travelled to Syria over four years ago to join IS — eventually marrying three fighters and calling for the killing of Americans on Twitter. “When I left to Syria I was a naive, angry, and arrogant young woman,” she said in a handwritten statement provided to CNN by a representative. “To say that I regret my past words, any pain that I caused my family and any concerns I would cause my country would be hard for me to really express properly.” —IANS

Sanders launches 2nd Prez bid IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S Senator Bernie Sanders announced on Tuesday he is again running for President in 2020 and vowed to finish what he started in his last race for the White House. Sanders lost the Democratic primaries in 2016 to Hillary Clinton. The former first lady lost the election to Donald Trump despite winning three million more votes than Trump. The self-styled socialist, who represents Vermont state as an independent, is set to compete in the Democratic Party primaries. Sanders said he would run a grassroots campaign that re-addresses some of the major issues he focused on in his unsuccessful 2016 bid, such as Medicare-ForAll, raising the minimum wage and tackling climate change and wealth inequality. “We began the political revolution in the 2016 campaign and now it’s time to move that revolu-

tion forward,” Sanders told Vermont Public Radio in an interview. Sanders is one of the most outspoken critic of President Trump, whom he has repeatedly called a “pathological liar” and a “racist”, the New York Times reported. “Make no mistake about it, the powerful special interests in this country have unbelievable power and they want to maintain the status quo,” said the 77-year-old senator, credited with revitalizing the

often-neglected left wing of the Democratic Party. “They have unlimited amounts of money to spend on campaigns and lobbying and have huge influence over the media and political parties. The only way we will win this election is with a grassroots movement the likes of which has never been seen in American history. They may have the money and the power; we have the people,” he said.

MODI UNVEILS GANDHI BUST

We can find solutions to two biggest challenges facing humanity, terrorism and climate change, from Mahatma Gandhi’s life, says Prime Minister in S Korea IANS, SEOUL

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday unveiled a bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the Yonsei University here and said we can find solutions to two biggest challenges facing humanity — terrorism and climate change — from Gandhi’s life. “Terrorism and climate change are the two biggest challenges mankind is facing now. If we look at the life of Gandhi, we can find solutions to both these problems. Gandhi used to say that the almighty and the bountiful nature have given everything to fulfil a human being’s need, but not the greed,” Modi, on a two-day state visit to South Korea, told a gathering. Expressing his concerns over the surge in terrorist activities, Modi advised people to look at Gandhi’s message of unity, human values and non-violence to succeed in the

fight against terrorism. “During Mahatma Gandhi’s lifetime there was no discussion about climate change and environment,

but the statesman led such a life that he did not leave any carbon footprint. He showed what living in harmony with nature is. He

showed that it is important to leave a clean and green planet for the future generations,” Modi said. The Prime Minister said that

F BENGALURU: India’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas has received the final operational clearance (FOC) from military aviation regulator Cemilac for induction into the Indian Air Force (IAF) as a weaponized fighter jet, said an official here on Wednesday. The Chief Executive of Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (Cemilac), P. Jayapal, handed over the FOC certificate and release-to-service documents to Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal B.S. Dhanoa at the Aero India air show here. “It is a major milestone for the LCA to get the final operational clearance. The aircraft could fly in many sorties and has demonstrated the precision with which it can deliver weapons,” Dhanoa told the media in the presence of Defense Secretary Ajay Kumar. The aircraft performed air-toground attacks and air-to-air refuelling at IAF’s Vayu Shakti air display at Pokhran in Rajasthan on February 16, the Air Chief said.

Gandhi was perhaps mankind’s biggest gift in the 20th century. “In the last century, through his life and personality, he showed what the future would be. He in fact used to say ‘my life is the message,’” Modi said. “This occasion assumes greater significance since we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the world is finding in Gandhi’s principles a future for mankind’s interests,” Modi said. Addressing the gathering after Modi, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he was honoured to be a part of the celebrations to mark Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary. South Korean President Moon Jae-in and First Lady Kim Jungsook were present on the occasion. Modi is on a two-day state visit to South Korea to accept the Seoul Peace Prize. He also addressed the India-Korea Business Symposium on Thursday.

ormer Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Congress for their silence over attacks on Kashmiri students in parts of the country. Addressing the media here, Abdullah said: “Attacks on Kashmiri students will result in further alienation of Kashmiris. “Kashmiri boys and girls pursuing studies outside the state have nothing to do either with politics or the Kashmir issue. They are simply trying to build their careers. “These students have somehow managed to contact us saying that they have

been harassed and threatened to leave different colleges and universities outside the state,” he said. Since a suicide bomber killed 40 CRPF troopers in the Kashmir Val-

ley on February 14, many Kashmiri students have been attacked by rightwing groups, particularly in Uttarakhand. A large number of them have left the state.

Abdullah said it appeared that those targeting Kashmiris had the blessings of the establishment, pointing out that one Governor -- of Meghalaya -- had called for a boycott of the Kashmiri community. He criticized Modi for his silence over the attacks on Kashmiri students and traders outside the state. “There was no condemnation from the Prime Minister on Kashmiri students being attacked. If he was busy, the Home Minister could have said something. Even the Congress has not said anything comforting. We need a statesman, not a politician,” he said. He also expressed concern over the withdrawal of security to mainstream politicians in the state.

KASHMIR INSURGENCY:

Need to win hearts and minds AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

O

ne of the most disturbing aspects of the February 14 terror attack in Pulwama was that the suicide bomber was a local, Adil Ahmad Dar, who lived in a village near the Jammu-Srinagar highway where the attack took place. Although indoctrinated as a fidayeen by the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad, Dar’s act as a jehadi underlines the vulnerability of impressionable Kashmiri youths to insidious anti-India propaganda by Pakistani terror groups nurtured by the Deep State comprising the country’s army and an espionage agency. In this particular instance, Dar

was apparently “inspired” to kill himself by Taliban’s “victory” signified by US withdrawal from Afghanistan. If anything, the tragedy emphasizes the interlinked international dimensions

Indian democracy provides a safeguard against a Messianic struggle, which is why an overwhelming majority of Indian Muslims, including Kashmiris, remain committed to the democratic system.

Indoctrinated as a fidayeen by the Pakistanbased Jaish-e-Mohammad, Dar’s act as a jehadi underlines the vulnerability of impressionable Kashmir’s youths to insidious anti-India propaganda by Pakistani terror groups of Islamic terrorism. From Syria to Afghanistan/Pakistan to Kashmir, the jehadi mindset is primed among youth by mythical Islamic Caliphate’s war against Kafirs. Unlike West Asia and even in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region,

However, it is undeniable that a section of Muslims in the valley continue to remain alienated notwithstanding the government’s attempts to reach out to them via negotiations started by Dineshwar Sharma, Centre’s representative.

From Syria to Afghanistan/Pakistan to Kashmir, the jehadi mindset is primed among the youth by the mythical Islamic Caliphate’s war against ‘Kafirs’ However, the government has been reluctant to implement some of the recommendations to improve conditions made by the Dileep Padgaonkar Committee. These included reducing army’s visibility, reviewing Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and lifting the Disturbed Areas Act. In essence, what these initiatives were expected to do was to reach out to the hearts and minds of the ordinary people whose commitment to the Indian state cannot be doubted as the continuing relevance of mainstream parties like National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party show. What is required to defang the terrorists and wean away the misguided youth from their self-

destructive path is a gesture which will have a major impact. Arguably, the ruling BJP may not find it easy to change its longstanding stance favoring dispensing with Article 370. But it has to be remembered that Atal Behari Vajpayee did put Article 370 in cold storage in 1996. Such broadmindedness is the need of the hour to dissuade deluded young men from the path of nihilism. True, the jehadi factor makes it difficult for a government to adopt a sane attitude because of the irrational pseudo-religious fervour of militants. But an overt demonstration of being sensitive can enable the government to enlist the overall support of Kashmiri society

Fake Operations: US Homeland Security & FBI Intelligence operators could try to ‘turn in’ a member of adversary’s set up or ‘plant’ a person of their own trust D.C. PATHAK, NEW DELHI

A

national Intelligence organization -- like that of India — earns the respect of the countrymen because it helps the State in discharging its sovereign function of safeguarding national security, stays completely non-partisan and establishes a method of working that is secretive but never crooked. Since security, by definition, is protection against a scheming adversary resorting to a ‘covert’ attack, the counterintelligence effort relies on tradecraft techniques perfected with professional training - like surveillance, infiltration into the enemy’s camp, communication monitoring, raising human sources and carrying out an

interview under ‘cover’. The adversarial entity has to be identified and then targeted keeping in view the aim that security by definition is preventive - if there is therefore the

danger of an enemy infiltrating its vanguard into the country clandestinely, these ideally have to be picked up right at the point of entry. For this a lot of effort is made

round the clock by operational teams to garner intelligence about the identity and location of ‘enemy’ agents. Intelligence operators could try to ‘turn in’ a member of the adversary’s set up or ‘plant’ a person of their own trust there. The results are never easy to get but the intelligence agency is prepared to ceaselessly slog for getting access to the plans and activities of a ‘real’ enemy. If this is done by fabricating a ‘trap’ by way of creating a fake university for getting unsuspecting individuals — who could not, by any stretch of imagination, be described as ‘enemy agents’ — to land in the country for joining that educational institution and then hauling them up as unlawful people precisely on

the ground of being in a fake institution, this is a rogue operation and not an intelligence effort. The criminality here would be on the shoulders of the phoney entity and its creators alone and not on the victims of the ‘fraud’ committed by the former. Imagine the shock that the people across the democratic world would feel over the recent media reports to the effect that the Homeland Security agents in the US apparently in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) — both are a part of the US Task Force against Terrorism — have rounded up hundreds of Indian students precisely in this way and tried to claim it as a great operation designed to detect infiltration into US.

I

ndian Americans across the US have expressed solidarity to the families of the 40 CRPF troopers who lost their lives in the February 14 Pulwama terror attack, by holding candlelight vigils, peaceful protests and fundraisers. In Atlanta, Georgia, members of the Gujarat Samaj gathered at the Sardar Patel Bhavan in Tucker, where they held a candlelight vigil over the weekend. The event was organized as a mark of protest and to pay tributes to the victims, The American Bazaar reported on Monday. Vigils are planned to take place this week also in Sacramento, the capital of California. The Indian Association of Sacramento (IAS) will hold one on Tuesday at the Lakshmi Narayan Temple. for Thursday outside the Pakistan Consulate in the city. J.D. Diganvker, a community activist and organizers of the protest, said: “We are grieving for our slain soldiers... We want Pak-

istan to take strict action against the terrorists... The protest will be an absolutely peaceful one and we will be giving a memorandum to the Pakistani Consulate.” A candlelight vigil was held at

the city's Dan Shanower early this week, while on Wednesday, protesters will gather at the Indian Consulate General office. Samir Kalra, MD of Hindu American Foundation (HAF), a non-profit advocacy organization, said: “While it's heartening to see that a wide swath of the international community is unequivocally condemning the attack, such statements of solidarity must be backed up by actions to eliminate terrorist groups who kill with impunity and destabilize the region.” The National Federation of Indian American Associations strongly condemned the attack, saying that “such an act of terrorism cannot and should not go without heavy punishments”. Various fundraisers have been floated to help the victims' families across the US by Indian American individuals and groups.

An arrest warrant for Gupta, issued in Feb 2018 on corruption charges, was canceled on Thursday, the BBC reported. The authorities had sought to question Ajay Gupta on allegations that he attempted to bribe former Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas and offered him the post of Finance Minister if Jonas helped the Gupta family with its business ventures in South Africa. Bolton to visit S Korea ahead of Trump-Kim meet Bolton’s trip comes as top US officials continue to hammer out the details of the US President’s second summit with Kim IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S National Security Advisor John Bolton will travel to South Korea later this week for a round of consultations ahead of President Donald Trump’s second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Vietnam. Bolton’s trip comes as top US officials continue to hammer out the details of the US President’s second summit with Kim, CNN reported on Wednesday. The two first met in June last year in Singa-

pore where they agreed to work towards denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in exchange for security guarantees for the Kim regime. But no real progress was made. Now, the February 27-28 Hanoi summit is expected to help the stagnating talks move forward. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has been the diplomatic lead on the North Korea negotiations in Trump’s cabinet, even though Bolton has remained closely involved in policy discussions on North Korea. Bolton attended the Singapore

summit and was at the table for Trump’s discussions with Kim and other North Korean officials. The NSA has long been a sceptic of a diplomatic resolution to North Korea’s nuclear threat and made clear that Kim was yet to take concrete steps towards denuclearization. In December, he said the second summit was necessary because Kim had not lived up to commitments he made during the first summit. “They have not lived up to the commitments so far,” Bolton told The Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council conference.

TEHRAN: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday said that the sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic by the US constitute an act of terrorism. Rouhani spoke following a Cabinet meeting in Tehran, underscoring the need for Iranians to continue to stand united against US sanctions, reports Efe. “The actions of the US in pressurizing banks and companies to not cooperate with Iran are absolute terrorist acts against international regulations,” Rouhani said. “The US is using all that it has against the nation of Iran, and the nation of Iran responds against this with all of its might, hope, and confidence,” the Iranian president said.

70 people dead in massive Dhaka fire DHAKA: Seventy people, including four children and five women were confirmed dead on Thursday while 56 were reported injured in a massive blaze in the Bangladesh capital that engulfed several multi-storey buildings in the Chawkbazar area of the old city. The fire began in one building from a reported transformer blast, before spreading to at least seveneight other buildings. Police said Bangladesh Air Force helicopters had to be used to douse the flames, Dhaka Tribune said. On May 8, 2018, US President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 international nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which saw the Hassan Rouhani Iranian regime agree to limits on its nuclear energy program in exchange for a lifting of sanctions. The remaining signatories — Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom, Germany and the EU — criticized the Trump administration for this move as international inspectors have consistently found that Tehran is abiding by the pact.

R

ussian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday said he would deploy missiles capable of striking the US if Washington decides to station missiles in European nations within striking distance of Russia. Giving his annual address to the Parliament, Putin said he was not looking for a confrontation with the US and nor would his country be the first to deploy missiles once Donald Trump’s administration completes the process of withdrawing from the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. But he warned of tit-for-tat measures in the case of an escalation by Washington, Efe news reported. “Russia would be obliged to manufacture and station weaponry

that could not only be used against territories where the direct threat comes from but also decision-making centres,” Putin told lawmakers. “We know how to do it and we would put these plans into effect as soon as such a threat became a reality,” he added. Russia announced it would

withdraw from the INF at the beginning of February following Washington’s unilateral decision to break away from the pact, a process that is set to be completed in six months’ time. Either country can backtrack during that period. Washington and Moscow both accuse each other of breaching the agreement. The INF Treaty was signed in 1987 between the then Soviet Union and the US on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles. Putin previously said that Russia’s response to the US withdrawal would be “symmetrical” but that nevertheless, Moscow would still refrain from deploying weapons with a range between 500 km and 5,500 km in European Russia and other global regions, so long Washington also agreed not to.

3 lawmakers quit Theresa May’s party over Brexit IANS, LONDON

T

hree lawmakers from the UK’s ruling Conservative Party have resigned to join an independent group founded by former Labour MPs, according to a statement made public on Wednesday. Anna Soubry, Heidi Allen and Sarah Wollaston wrote a joint letter to Prime Minister Theresa May confirming their departure and wrote that they tried to keep the party close to the center ground of politics but it had instead drifted to the right, the BBC reported. sensus. They said the Conservative Party stopped reflecting the values and beliefs that they and millions throughout the UK shared.

The pro-Remain trio will join the new Independent Group made up of eight Labour MPs who resigned from the opposition party

over its handling of Brexit and anti-Semitism - saying it represented “the center ground of British politics”. “There has been a dismal failure to stand up to the hard line ERG (pro-Brexit European Research Group) which operates openly as a party within a party, publicly and privately funded, with its own leader, whip and policy,” said the letter, which was published by Soubry. May said she was “saddened” but her party would “always offer... decent, moderate and patriotic politics”. As the final date for Brexit approaches, disquiet has broken out both in the government and in the Labour Party.

he Indian Army this week said that all the top leadership of the Jaish-eMuhammad (JeM) outfit have been eliminated by security forces in the Kashmir Valley within 100 hours of the terror attack in which 40 CRPF troopers were killed. India, Saudi Arabia condemn Pulwama, call to end terror

Trump urges India, Pakistan to ‘get along’ WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has urged India and Pakistan to “get along” in the wake of Jammu and Kashmir suicide bombing and said that his country will respond on the issue at an “appropriate time”. “I have watched. I have got a lot of reports on it. We will have comment (on it) at an appropriate time. It would be wonderful if they (India and Pakistan) get along,” he said in response to a question during an Oval Office signing ceremony on Tuesday. The US President called the attack that killed 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers last week “a horrible situation”. “That (the terrorist attack) was a horrible situation. We are getting reports. We will have a statement to put out,” he said. Earlier on Tuesday, US State Department deputy spokesperson Robert Palladino, during a press briefing, said that Washington was in touch with both New Delhi and Islamabad regarding the bombing claimed by the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). “We have been in close communi-

“In yesterday’s (Monday) operation in Pulwama, we have killed Kamran, who was the operational commander of the JeM in Kashmir together with another Pakistani and a local terrorist of the outfit.” On Monday’s operation, the

Corps Commander said it was the result of complete synergy between the Army, state police and the CRPF. The senior-most army officer in the Valley did not accept that there was any security lapse that led to the Pulwama terror strike. “What the terrorists have succeeded in doing is only one or two per cent of what was denied to them because of the alertness of the security forces. “There was no restriction on movement of civilian traffic when the lone terrorist managed to get on to the highway and hit the CRPF bus. Restrictions on civilian traffic during movement of convoys of security forces are in place now,” he said. Answering a question on the number of security force personnel killed and injuries in SundayMonday’s operation, the Corps Commander said that the security forces took casualties because their first priority was to ensure that no civilian life was lost”. The top army officer made a request to parents especially mothers in the Valley to ensure that their children who have picked up guns come back to the mainstream by surrendering their weapons.

We urge Pakistan to fully cooperate with the investigation into the attack and to punish anyone responsible,” he added. The remarks on the UN sanctions regime during discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman came two days after the joint statement issued during the visit of the Saudi Arabian leader to Pakistan which had “underlined the need for avoiding politicization of the UN listing regime”. called upon all states to reject the use of terrorism against other countries, dismantle terrorism infrastructures where they happen to exist and to cut off any kind of support and financing to the terrorists perpetrating terrorism from territories against other states, and bring perpetrators of acts of terrorism to justice. I’ve been staying in a shelter for over a year, but I do not always feel safe in a shelter.” “My story, and the stories of many other immigrant and refugees show we face many barriers preventing us from living healthy and dignified lives,” continued Dantran. “We’re asking for the city of Chicago to support our struggle.” During the forum, members of the PAVE Coalition also laid out their vision for racial equity and the role Asian Americans play in the city. “We know our struggles are shared and felt deeply by others,” said Chhun Singha, a leader with Cambodian Association of Illinois. “We know that the root cause of our concerns are the same, whether it is our concern for the safety of our children, fear of deportation, or lead contamination in our water. We know that

many in Chicago have suffered from the long legacy of racism in this nation, some of which we do not experience in the same way, like police brutality.” “On this journey for justice, the Asian American community will not be used against others who face oppression. We stand together,” continued Singha. “Our PAVE Coalition partners proudly serve, live, and work alongside other communities of color every day.” Election Day is on Tuesday, February 26. Early voting is now open at locations across the city at locations that can be found on the Chicago Board of Elections website. If a voter hasn’t registered, they can do so at any early voting location before Election Day or with two forms of identification such as a driver’s license or utility bill. Voters who have not yet registered can also do so on Election Day at their precinct polling place. ID is not required for voters who are already registered.

Aneeth kaur Hundle Named the Dhan Kaur Sahota Presidential Chair in Sikh Studies BY A STAFF WRITER IRVINE, CA – Anneeth Kaur Hundle has been named the Dhan Kaur Sahota Presidential Chair in Sikh Studies at the University of California, Irvine School of Social Sciences (UCI). The $2 million endowed chair – housed in the Department of Anthropology – was created in 2017 with a $1.5 million gift from Drs. Harvinder and Asha Sahota and $500,000 from the UC Presidential Match for Endowed Chairs program. “With the establishment of this endowed chair, we hope members of the UCI community will deepen their understanding of Sikh religion and culture by learning the vibrant traditions, many contributions in world history and American society,” said cardiologist Harvinder Sahota. “We are particularly keen to ensure UCI students are aware of the religion’s commitment to equality and social justice.” “As UCI’s Dhan Kaur Sahota Presidential Chair in Sikh Studies, Anneeth Kaur Hundle will teach courses and develop research programs using anthropological theory and methods to investigate critical themes of diaspora communities, citizenship, migration, nativism, political violence, and gender and feminist issues,” stated School of Social Sciences / UCI. As chair and UCI assistant professor of anthropology, Hundle will contribute to the study of the Sikh religion and culture in global, comparative, cross-racial and religious community frameworks. She will teach courses

Aneeth Kaur

and develop research programs to increase understanding of immigrant incorporation and civil rights issues affecting Sikhs in the U.S. Hundle joined UCI in January from UC Merced, where she was an assistant professor of anthropology and associated faculty with the critical race & ethnic studies program. Her current research explores the politics of race, gender, citizenship and decolonization in Uganda after the expulsion of the racialized Asian community in 1972. Her research and writing have been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Wenner-Gren Foundation and multiple UC

awards, including the UC President’s Faculty Research Fellowship. “I am honored to be the first person named to this chair and appreciate the support of the Sahotas, Dean Maurer and my colleagues here at UCI in anthropology and other departments,” Hundle said. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to build on my existing expertise and advance Sikh studies scholarly research in local, transnational and global contexts, and I look forward to promoting cross-religious, -ethnic and -racial community outreach and engagement via Sikh studies and anthropology with this position.”

State Sen. Villivalam Encouraged by Additional Education Funding

BY A STAFF WRITER SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Senator Ram Villivalam (D-Chicago) released a statement following Gov. JB Pritzker’s budget address this afternoon. “It is a relief to serve with a governor who shares our values,” Villivalam said. “We have difficult choices ahead of us. This budget won’t be a solution to all of the problems we face in Illinois, but it’s a start.” The budget proposed by Pritzker, which covers July 1, 2019, through June 30, 2020, calls for increased funding for education paid for by revenues that will be primarily created with the legalization of recreational marijuana and sports gambling. “Investing in education is one of the most important things we can do as legislators. To keep our young people in Illinois we need to provide quality higher education opportunities in our state so they go to school here, get jobs here and choose to raise their families here,” Villivalam said. “By no means will these new revenue sources solve every problem we face, but ensuring that all students in Illinois in K-12 and beyond have the tools to succeed is a good start.”

Ramesh Pulavarthi, along with his wife, children and his father-in-law, Feb. 17 went for a drive up to Lake Tahoe, making several stops along the way to catch some of the scenery, the family wrote on a GoFundMe page. One of the stops was at a viewpoint near Bridal Veil Falls so they could get a good view of the waterfalls and capture it for their memories, the post continued. “Who knew that this family snap would be his last snap of his life?” the family wrote in the post. After ensuring everyone was in the car, Pulavarthi was walking from the back of his SUV to the driver’s seat when a car struck him from behind, propelling the man several yards away. Police said a disconnected 911 call led them to the couple’s home around 6 a.m., where they found 46-year-old Shanti Nakirekanti dead in the driveway with a gunshot wound. Police then found 51-year-old Sreenivas Nakirekanti’s body in the bedroom, with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the chest and a small gun nearby. The deaths of Sreenivas and Shanti are being investigated as a murder-suicide. The couple’s 16-year-old daughter who was in the house when the shooting took place, was found unharmed. She is in the custody of friends. An aunt was expected to be arriving in Houston from out of state. According to some media reports, Sreenivas sent an email to several of his friends at about the same time he called 911. The details of the email are not known at this time. People close to the couple said Sreenivas was a director at an energy company in Houston. Shanti was a computer programmer. They were not aware of any problems between the two.
