Maha to shut offices midnight HiIndia Newsdesk

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday ordered closing of offices and shops in Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Pune, Pimpri and Nagpur till March 31 to curb any possibility of the coronavirus infection spreading.

Thackeray also announced that the state government will operate at only 25% of the workforce, down from the 50% that his government had announced last week.

The chief minister didn’t announce suspension of train and bus services as had been anticipated by some.“There have been demands that trains, buses, etc. be shut down. This may be a relevant suggestion but what about people who are part of critical services such as doctors, nurses, BMC employees etc. How will they travel?”

Doctor commits ‘suicide’, depression suspected

A 32-year-old doctor working in a hospital in Hyderabad was found dead at this residence on Friday. Police suspect that the doctor, Dasarapu Subash, who lived with his parents in Quthbullapu of Medchal committed suicide.

According to police, Subash did not respond at around 6 am, when his mother tried to wake him up. She informed his father and they shifted him to a nearby hospital where a doctor examined him and declared him dead.

Confirming the latest positive case, Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar said, “A 67-year-old patient who is a resident of Bengaluru was tested positive on Tuesday. The patient, who

also suffers from chronic kidney disease, had returned from Dubai via Goa on March 9.”

He added that the patient had been in “strict home quarantine” since her return but was admitted to a designated isolation hospital in the city on March 16. “21 high-risk contacts including five family members have been identified and are under strict home quarantine.

Contact tracing of all secondary contacts of the case is underway,” Sudhakar added.

Train compartment gutted in fire, arson suspected

Under the 1977 law, an abortion was considered a crime, except when two doctors certified that continuing a woman’s pregnancy would result in danger to her mental or physical health.

Tech giant IBM, in partnership with four other companies, is developing a prototype suitcase that will use artificial intelligence to help guide visually challenged people. The company is working with Alps Alpine, Mitsubishi, Omron, and Shimizu on the smart suitacase.

The prototype, which is a suitcaseshaped robot for now, was ideated

by IBM fellow Chieko Asakawa, who herself has vision problems.

According to Japanese national newspaper, Asahi Shimbun, the AI suitcase will scan the user’s location and map data to identify the best route for them. It will also guide them through voice and haptic feedback, transmitting vibrations on the suitcase handle.

Illinois [USA], Mar 15 (ANI): Being distracted by technology during mealtimes may reduce the amount of food a person eats, nutrition scientists suggest.

The findings were published in the Journal of Nutrition. When 119 young adults consumed a meal while playing a simple computer game for 15 minutes, they ate significantly less than when they ate the same meal without distractions, said lead author Carli A. Liguori.

Participants’ food consumption was evaluated on two separate occasions - one day when they played the game while eating and on another day when they ate without distractions.

The game, called Rapid Visual Information Processing, tests users’ visual sustained attention and working memory and has been used extensively by researchers in evaluating people for problems such as Alzheimer’s disease and attention-deficit disorder.

The game randomly flashes a series of digits on the computer screen at the rate of one per second. Participants in the study were instructed to hit the space bar on the keyboard whenever they saw three consecutive odd numbers appear.

“It’s fairly simple but distracting enough that you have to really be watching it to make sure that you don’t miss a number and are mentally keeping track. That was a big question for us going into this - how do you ensure that the participant is distracted? And the RVIP was a good solution for that,” Liguori said.

The participants, who had fasted for 10 hours before each visit, were told to consume as much as they wanted of 10 miniature quiches while they were either playing the game or eating quietly without distractions for 15 minutes.

The food was weighed and counted before and after it was given to each person.

After a 30-minute rest period, participants completed an exit survey that asked them to recall how many quiches they had been given and the number they had consumed. They also rated how much they enjoyed the meal as well as their feelings of hunger and fullness.

WE-Equal Hope has Launched Breast Cancer Charity

BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO,IL- Equal Hope is a state-run initiative to improve the breast cancer outcomes in minority women. WE is collaborating with Equal Hope to implement this program in the south-asian women community.

Equal Hope provides access to many free resources to un-insured and underinsured women like free mammograms, free referral to diagnostic centers, social programs available especially for minority women and many more.

There are two basic parts to Equal Hope - awareness of these existing resources and fundraising for the free mammos. WE has set a goal to fundraise $25,000 this year for 100 free mammos. We are now trying to spread the word about this program to big groups of south-asian women so they can benefit from these free existing resources.

WE is a networking & empowerment platform for South-Asian women in Chicago. Established in Nov 2017, it currently has 1700 members. The mission

of WE is to support entrepreneurship in the South-Asian women community. Our top goals are to showcase women professionals & business owners, recognize successful southasian women and raise awareness for existing womens services & resources.

Equal Hope is an Illinois State Breast Cancer Taskforce program designed to reduce the disparity in breast cancer outcomes between white women and minority women. This program addresses the chronic shortfall in mammogram services

for un- and under-insured women, offering free mammograms to women. In addition to education and mammogram services, the Task Force also provides navigation services to free diagnostic and treatment services.

Our program goes above and beyond by having community navigators work with patients enrolled in our program to.

The WE-Equal Hope collaboration is designed to reduce the disparity in breast cancer outcomes specifically between white women and south-asian women.

Coronavirus has a natural origin, says study

BY A STAFF WRITER WASHINGTON, DC (USA)- A new study suggests that the coronavirus disease 9COVID-19) that emerged from China’s Wuhan city is a product of natural evolution The study was published in the journalNature Medicine.

The analysis of public genome sequence data from SARS-Cov-2 and related viruses found no evidence that the virus was made in laboratory or otherwise engineered.

“By comparing the available genome sequence data for know coronavirus strains, we can firmly determine that SARS-CoV-2 originated through natural processes,” said the lead researcher Kristian Andersen.

In addition to Andersen, authors on the paper, “The proximal origin of SARS-CoV-s”, include Robert F. Garry of Tulane University, Edward Holmes, of the University of Sydney, Andrew Rambaut of University of Edinburg and W. Ian Lipkin of Columbia University.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause illnesses ranging widely in severity.

The first known severe illness caused by a coronaviruses emerged with the 2003 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic in China. A second outbreak of severe illness began in 2012 in Saudi Arabia with the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

On December 31 last year, Chinese authorities alerted the World Health Organization (WHO) of an outbreak of a noval strain of coronavirus causing severe illness, which was subsequerquently named SARS-CoV-2.

As of February 20, 2020 nearly 167,400 COVID-19 cases have beed documented, although many more mild cases have likely gone undiagonsed. The virus has killed over 6,600 people.

Shortly after the epidemic began, Chinese scientists sequenced the genome of SARS-CoV-2 and made the data available to researchers worldwide.

The resulting genomic sequence data has shown that the Chinese authorities rapid detected the epidemic and that the number of COVID-10 cases have been increasing because of human to human transmission after a single introduction into the human population.

Andersen and collaborators at several other research institutions used this sequencing data to explore the origins and evolution of SARS-CoV-2 focusing in on several tell-tale features of the virus.

The scientists analysed the genetic teemplate for spike proteins, srmatures on the outside fo human cells called ACE2, a receptor involved in regulating blood pressure.

The SARS-CoV-2 spike protein was so effective to binding the human cells in the fact, the scientists concluded that it was the result of natural selection and not the product of genetic engineering.

This evidence for natural evolution was supported by data on SARS-CoV-2’s backboneits overall molecular structure. If someone where seeking to engineer a new coronavirus as a pathogen, they would have constructed it from the backbone of a virus known to cause illness.

But the scientists found that the SARSCoV-s backbone differed subsstantially from those of already known coronaviruses and mostly resembled related viruses found in bats and pangolins.

“These two features of the virus, the mutations in the RBD portion of the spike protein and its distinct backbone, rule out laboratory manipulation as a potential orgin for SARS-CoV-2,” said Anderson.

Josie Golding, PhD, epidemics lead at UKbased Wellcome Trust, said that the findings

by Andersen and his colleagues are “crucially important to bring an evidence-based view to the rumours that have been circulating about the origins of the virus (SARS-CoV-2) causing COVID-19.”

‘They conclude that the virud is the product of natural evolution ending any speculation about deliberate genetic engineering,” Goluding added.

Based on their genomic sequencing analysis, Andersen and his collaborators concluded that the most likely origins for SARS-CoV-2 followed one of two possible scenarios.

In one scenario, the virus evolved to its current pathogenic state through natural selection in a non-human host and than jumped to humans.

This is how previous coronavirus outbreaks have emerged, with humans contracting the virus after direct exposure to civets (SARS) and camels

(MERS).

The researchers proposed bats as the most likely resevoir for SARS-CoV-2 as it very similar to a bat coronavirus. There are no documented cases of direct bat-human transmission, howerever, suggesting that an intermediate host ws likely involved between bats and humans.

In this scenario, both of the distinctive feature of SARS-CoV-2’s spike protein-the RBO portion that binds to cells and the cleavage site that opens the virus up would have evolved to their current state prior to entering humans.

In this case, the current epidemic would be probably have emerged rapidly as soon as humans were infected, as the virus would have already evolved the features that make it pathogenic and able to spread between people.

In the other proposed scenario, a nonpathogenic version of the virus jumped from an animal host into humans and then evolved to its current pathogenic state withing the human population.

For instance, some coronovariuses from pangolins, armadillo-like mammals found in Asia nd Africa, have an RBD structure very similar to that of SARS-CoV-2. A coronavirus from a pangolin could possibly have been transmitted to a human, either directly or through an intermediary host such as civets or ferrets.

Then the other distinct spike protein characteristic of SARS-CoV-2 the cleavage site, could have evolved within ahuman host, possibly via limited undetected.

The researchers found that the SARS-CoV-2 cleavage site appears similar to the cleavagae sites of strains of bird flu that have been shown to transmit easily between people.

SARS-CoV-2 could have evolved such a virulent cleavage site in human cells and soon kicked off the current epidemic, as the coronavirus would possibly have become far more capable of spreading between people.

Study co-author ANdrew Rambaut cautioned that it is difficult if not impossible to know at this point which of the scenarios is most likely.

If the SARS-CoV-2 entered humans in its current pathogenic form from an animal source, it raises the probabiliyt of future outbreks, as the illness-causing strain of the virus coule sitll be circulating in the animal population and might once again jump into humans.

The chances are lower of a non-pathogenic coronavirus entering human population and then evolving properties similar to SARS-CoV-2

USCIS Temporarily Closing Offices to the Public March 18-April 1 USCIS NEWS RELEASE WASHINGTON, DC - Effective March 18, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is suspending in-person services at its field offices, asylum offices and Application Support Centers (ASCs) to help slow the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). USCIS field offices will send notices to applicants and petitioners with scheduled appointments and naturalization ceremonies impacted by this closure. USCIS asylum offices will send interview cancellation notices and automatically reschedule asylum interviews.

When the interview is rescheduled, asylum applicants will receive a new interview notice with the new time, date and location of the interview. When USCIS again resumes normal operations, USCIS will automatically reschedule ASC appointments due to the office closure.

You will receive a new appointment letter in the mail. Individuals who had InfoPass or other appointments must reschedule through the USCIS Contact Center once field offices are open to the public again. Students in Fresno Getting Opportunity to Learn Punjabi Language Part of an AfterSchool Program

BY A STAFF WRITER FRESNO, CA- Thanks to a new initiative, students in Fresno, Calif., are getting an opportunity to learn global languages, including Punjabi.

The Fresno Unified School District launched the new after-school program in response to the Global California 2030 Initiative. It gives students the chance to learn Arabic, Punjabi, Spanish, French or Mixteco.

The California department of education’s mission through the initiatives, according to Building Futures, a publication of the FUSD, is to equip students with world language skills and cross-cultural competencies to better appreciate and more fully engage with the rich and diverse mixture of cultures, heritages and languages in California and the world, while also preparing them to succeed in the global economy.

Currently, the languages are taught at five elementary schools, with one of the languages taught at each school.

For the initial phase in Fresno Unified, Arabic is offered at Vinland Elementary School, Punjabi at Storey Elementary School, Spanish at Addams Elementary School, French at Heaton Elementary School and Mixteco at Hidalgo Elementary School.

“We’re trying to develop programs that are enjoyable for kids and where they develop a sense of the idea that it’s really great to know languages other than English,” Thea Fabian with the Fresno Unified School District told ABC30.

The statewide 2030 goals for the initiative, as per the school publication, are to triple the number of students who earn the seal of biliteracy, quadruple the number of bilingual programs, establish 100 state-approved bilingual teacher preparation programs and double the number of teachers authorized to teach in two languages.

RNP Foundation Helping the Planet, One Day at a Time

The foundation was established in order to increase the happiness, health and satisfaction of all beings, from humans to the animals and plants we share this planet with, it said.

The Indian American husband and wife had the firm conviction backed by their own experience as long-time meditators that ultimate lasting happiness comes from spiritual depth; however, they also were practical enough to know that in order for people to pursue spirituality they must have at least basic education, proper nutrition, secure housing and infrastructure, and a healthy planet, it said.

“With all of this in mind, we built the foundation upon five interconnected pillars: Environmentalism, Nutrition, Housing, Education, and Spirituality,” Ravi Patel said in a statement.

In India, the foundation implemented innovative solutions for housing, nutrition, infrastructure and education. It built a school for underprivileged children who otherwise would not have access to regular education.

Additionally, the school provides many afterschool programs for the students as well as free nutritious food. The foundation provided clean toilets and sanitation to three villages as well cancer prevention education and early detection to over six hundred villages, according to the news release.

In the U.S., the members of the foundation have worked tirelessly to build communities and programs based on all five of its pillars, it said.

BY A STAFF WRITER CHESTER SPRINGS, PA- Grieving from the loss of her husband Feb. 29, Manu Batchali launched a GoFundMe page seeking financial help.

Her husband, Anjanee Kumar Batchali, passed away from sudden heart failure in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, and the widow’s plea was heard.

In the week-plus since the campaign opened, Batchali and her family has received more than $200,000 in support.

“He collapsed the night before and I took him to the hospital immediately. After 3 hours of trying, doctors declared he could not be revived,” Manu Batchali explained of the dire situation.

“He was a loving father to our two children, daughter Dhrithi 7 years and son Daivansh 18 months. None of us saw this coming. Anji was highly health conscious and loved fitness. He was also a valuable employee in his company’s IT Department. He lived a vibrant, healthy, and impactful life. He was only 38 years old, gone far too soon,” she added.

Manu explained how Anjanee was on an H-1B visa and was the sole financial supporter of not only their immediate family, but for much of their extended family as well.

“I am on a dependent Visa, which is in danger of being revoked. With Anji’s passing, we have no income and could use some support to help us get back on our feet,” the post continued.

The donations, which at time of press had reached $203,450, will be used for medical bills, end of life expenses and relocation costs.

The donation capability on the page has since been disabled.

After taxes, bills and other expenses, part of whatever left will be saved for the education of kids. The remaining funds, she said, will be used to help her father-in-law, who depended on his son for financial support. He lives by himself in Bangalore and has medical conditions that need continuous care.

“It’s my responsibility to be his Son now on and provide assistance as much as I can,” she wrote.

She thanked everyone from bottom of her heart.
